  • Today we have a guest in the workshop which is a tractor belonging to Gareth, a friend of ours and it is a 1992 Bolens GT2000. The tractor is 32 years newer than our oldest tractor Bolens (1960 Bolens Ride-a-matic) and 12 years newer than our newest one (1980 Bolens HT23).
    This is a tractor that we will be working on between our other projects. A number of the parts are common with other Bolens tractors and others are completely different. Today we do an overview of the issues with the tractor and we welcome your thoughts and feedback on our plan of attack.

    Hello Joseph,
    Another interesting project... on the starter motor mount the new backplate looks a good idea, maybe some JB Weld you be used to rebuild the broken hole in the casting thus giving extra support. The engine test bed is a cool idea. I was thinking that maybe the fuel tank from the 1960 Ride-a-matic project you be added to your test bed,
    Take care.

    since you asked,, I think I'd pull the flywheel and see about that stater make sure it's ok and with the flywheel off it might be easier to work on the starter bracket you made also I think the cog on the starter is about had it.

    • @GardenTractorBoy
      @GardenTractorBoy  8 месяцев назад

      That is a fantastic idea, thanks. I am pleased we asked and I knew you would have a good idea. You are right, the cog on the starter needs replacing but you would not believe how expensive they are over here. I think the cheapest we have found so far works out at about 273 dollars. We plan to see if we can use it as it is and then if the engine runs good we will import one from the US. I saw one on the US ebay site for 30 dollars although it will be another 30 dollars for shipping and about the same again for import duties. Take care

    Great video fellas. Good plan Joseph. Quite a project. Does the engine have automatic compression release system to help on starting. If so, you won’t get a true reading of compression.
    And maybe easier to work on the starter mounting if to have the front tin and flywheel out of the way.
    Have a great day fellas. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋

    • @GardenTractorBoy
      @GardenTractorBoy  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks. That is an interesting point, I am not sure if it does have compression release or not we will have to investigate. I know Kohler liked to put compression release on a number of engines. I like your idea to remove the flywheel and tin to get better access. It will allow us to investigate the stator issue too. Take care

    Lots of issues with this engine. Interesting to fix and learn from but lots to sort out and fix. The loose stator is concerning. On the starter bolt holes...gets me wondering if there is a chance to weld and re-drill the casting? The solid work frame you built will serve you well once it's running . Always nice to have things bolted down.

    • @GardenTractorBoy
      @GardenTractorBoy  7 месяцев назад

      You are right, lots to fix and learn from this project. We do not have the tools to be able to weld cast aluminium but like you I would have thought it might be possible. I believe the tractor owner explored getting it welded and was told it would not work. We have been wanting to build a solid frame like this for a while now to be able to mount and test engines. Take care

    That tractor suffered substantial abuse in the past, other than the water! You didn't mention how many hours are on it.
    I have 3 of those tractors, two 18 HP models & 1 diesel. Also had a "transition" model (same tractor) decaled as a "Troybilt by Bolens". It was red & got parted out. Eventually they were all Troybilt but the same tractor.
    Those Kohler Command engines are very stout IMO & yes crank seals are problematic. I would check into that stator issue before putting too may revolutions on the engine.
    Other weak spots are the plastic dash & the 2 speed shift lever connection at the gear box shaft. None of the fuel gauges work on my 3 units!
    They are very beefy tractors but can be very difficult to work on. By the way, the diesel is equipped with a 3 cyl Mitsubishi engine tagged as "Built for Bolens by Mitsubishi Industrial Engine Div.
    Looking forward to watching your endeavor.

    • @GardenTractorBoy
      @GardenTractorBoy  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the information and your advice. The tractor has 1365 hours. Following your advice I think we will remove the flywheel first so we can investigate the stator and have better access to fix the starter mount. The plastic dash looks good on this one but it has had a very hard front impact at some point in the past. We have not worked on this model of Bolens before so it will be interesting. We decided to pass on a diesel version at an auction a few years ago and regret doing that. Take care
