Mountbatten on Nehru & Jinnah: Notice the Difference

  • Mountbatten first met Nehru and his wife in 1946 and their friendship was formed when he came to India as Viceroy. However, things with Jinnah never went smoothly. The biggest reason was that Mountbatten wanted to avoid partition, just like Nehru, while Jinnah saw partition and Pakistan as his main goal.
    Till April 1947, Mountbatten argued with Jinnah to try and convince him to accept Cabinet Mission Plan that would have averted partition. But in vain. So, in May he hatched his own partition plan and sent it to Whitehall for approval. When it came back, Nehru was shown the approved version, not Jinnah. Nehru rejected it as it meant balkanization of India. So, Menon's Plan was accepted that allowed only Pakistan and India to be created. No province could declare independence.
    Jinnah-Mountbatten distrust had severe consequences for Jinnah chose to be Governor-General instead of Mountbatten and Mountbatten chose to be more partial than impartial especially on the vital issues of Boundary Commission and Kashmir.

      He wasn’t that simple, racist or hateful. He was a barrister. He was shrewd and knew that he wasn’t getting a great deal. He didn’t get a great deal and he never would have.
      With his intellect, shrewdness and knowledge of history, it’s still shocking how he could have played into the hands of the British. They could’ve decided to vote, in the future, or create independent self-governing states instead of undergoing an entire partition that lead to awful atrocities.
      We complain about what the British did but we also did it to ourselves, when we tried to gain independence. It was the biggest partition in the history of the 20th century.
      Jinnah should have known that large countries have many problems. A country that has many religions, castes, fluctuating literacy rates, levels of education and regional cultures, will always have problems. That is inevitable. Until a time comes when they are all highly educated and economically well off.
      The more differences there are in socio economic status, the more problems there are.

    In another 25 years, the year will be 2047 and we would have reached 100 years of independence. By now, the hurt and pain has decreased and hopefully, by 2047, the two countries will be able to trade, travel and share stories of lineage together.
    Muhammad Ali Jinnah never declared an Islamic nation. He was not divisive. He sat in the company of intellectuals and had great men to bounce ideas off of and be inspired by.
    He was liberal and progressive in his private and public life. It was disillusionment and the British that caused him to form a separate nation. Not logic. It is said that he regretted it later. I do think that he did. Most South Asians certainly do.
    That does not take away his perseverance, resilience , magnificent career as a Barrister and his intellect. He was not at all conservative or traditionalist in his views. Jinnah and Nehru were called nationalists because they wanted independence.
    Their nationalism has no similarity to the nationalism in Pakistan and India, today. Today, right-wing nationalism in Pakistan and India, includes a strong conservative religious identity. According to the political discourse of South Asia, today, Jinnah and Nehru would be called patriotic and progressive.
    Like most intellectuals, the problems facing the country and regressive social attitudes, were not to be accepted but to be changed, monitored and eradicated. Unlike todays right-wing nationalists who make excuses for regressive actions, even if they lead to crime.
    Pakistan does not have popular intellectuals today. That is why Pakistan political discourse has weakened and become regressive.

      It is infrequent to see some really reasonable explanation like this. I won't lie, but I am getting a lot of Shashi Tharoor vibes from reading the comment... I feel like as more Indians and Pakistanis would open up and speak more logically, reasonably, sensibly, and intellectually, many perspectives would change amongst the people in South Asia. Unfortunately, most of the conversations I encountered with my Pakistani friends were mostly emotion-driven, sensitive, and highly passionate. I wouldn't want to test anyone's tolerance further, especially once I am aware of the outcome of being vocal, so I wouldn't usually discuss any issues on the topic of Partition or Religious differences or rather indifferences with them. However, I could only have my fingers crossed and hope for more South-Asians to speak as you did.

      @Ashnesss 2 года назад

      @@rishithakur7186 I understand what you mean. I have been on the receiving end of such emotions when I discuss religion or the partition. I find it rather silly.
      I also think, that we cannot only look at the aspect of religion, when it comes to partition. We must also look at politics because that did play a role. Jinnah, Nehru and Gandhi were politicians.

      @@Ashnesss Oh never, what I said in my comment was “religious differences or rather indifferences”. What I am trying to imply is I have witnessed a sentiment for separate state by some of my Pakistani friends which is based purely on the aspect of religion which to me is insignificant or not a strong reason to demand a separate based purely on someone’s personal beliefs or opinions or way of life or religion or whatsoever name people like giving it. A practical reason for separate state is linguistic which is not the case in the Subcontinent. There is a broader political agenda behind the division of the Subcontinent.. However, religion is not something that I could completely rule out because they had a strong believe in the cause for a separate state purely based on religion. So I had to say it in a way which also keeps their side… But emphasizing my notion clearly which is humanitarian indifferences…

    • @Ashnesss
      @Ashnesss 2 года назад

      @@rishithakur7186 Yes, some Pakistanis firmly believe that they separated because of religion, even if their parents were not religious and even if they were/are recent converts to Islam.
      Unfortunately, that was the messaging that was spread at the time, which is why Muslims in Pakistan believe that they are better off than Muslims in India. But minorities in Pakistan are not better off, just like minorities in India, after BJP, are not better off. Pakistan and India have become two sides of the same coin.
      I think, that Jinnah felt disillusioned and alone. It was not a democratic decision. Had he waited for independence and asked people to vote for or against the proposal of a separate state, the harm would have been mitigated as well as animosity between the two countries.
      Yes. The political aspect of a political decision can never be undermined or ignored. I understand what you mean by a separate state based on religion. Most separate states, are regional and they usually have certain defining or differentiating traits, unique to their people, which is why they are governed as independent states by elected members who stem from the community.
      Muslim-majority states or states with a significant Muslim population, could have done just that, to begin with. Like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar. States with significant Muslim, Christian or Dalit population, could have been governed self-governing states as well with representatives who are neutral and do not display an overt religious identity.

To show that he isn't Flexible or interested in British Favours for himself but Interested only and only for Creating a nation for His people. Politics and Personal life should be separate. But sadly The Britishers did Deceive. Kashmir a Muslim Majority boardering Pakistan, left it as a bone of Contention between us.
    While Nehru from the Start had a Strong Position.Support of a Majority a Population. The Nation of India was confirmed to be made/decolonized. What he needed to Do was look worthy of a Leadership & Trust for British. Thus formed Personal relations, Bcz British always Reward those kinda people when they leave/decolonize, To at the least level protect British interests, i.e so If they can't Take advantage of Indian Resources anymore the least they can secure is India not becoming their 'Enemy'. In reality, as Gandhi's letter to Azad (dated 2/8/45) that was intercepted by British shows, Gandhi had asked Azad to shelve his plan as it accepted that Hindu Raj was imminent and Muslims needed safeguards such as parity. In India Wins Freedom Azad produces a sanitized version of his plan.

      Hindu-Muslim violence reached its peak in that decade during Congress Raj. Vidya Mandir scheme, imposition of anti-Muslim Vande Matram as national anthem, music played before mosques, Muslims killed during Id-al-Azha for sacrificing cow all peaked. This started in 1870s with Deccan riots, then 1882 Salem riots, 1888-1893 cow raksha riots. Partition of Bengal saw anti-Muslim sentiments further increase. Congress refused to share any power in 1937-39 and drove Muslim premiers such as Sikandar Hyat and Fazlul Haq (both anti-League) into lap of the League.
      Pretending everything was fine is an old mahasabha tactic. I advise against using it. Oh and in case you didn't notice: Bangladesh did not go back into India.

      @@middleclassmc9202 Wherever this happens the country breaks up. Look at Europe divided into dozens of small states. Ireland which fought a civil war to free themselves. I have already explained to you how Hindu Congress refused to share power in 1937-39 and emboldened Hindutva. Your assertion that we would be ruling India had Partition not happened is baseless.
