  • It's time for the moment we've all been dreading: fiberglassing the hull of the tiny houseboat. This is one of the last steps before flipping the hull and starting on the fun part of the boat build... but i may never make it that far

About me: I decided to jump on an opportunity to buy a school bus for $1000. After 2.5 years of building and a couple summers doing bus life, I sold the bus and began building a tiny house boat from scratch. My hope is that with a couple years of practice building under my belt, I can do a bit better of a job this time and build something that actually floats 🤞

Emma, you're doing great!! Remember, you CAN NOT mess up a fiberglass job. A DA sander and a pile of disks will fix all whoa's. You're learning. It is looking great.

Just about perfect advise for someone learning to work with that stuff. Not sure what resin she is using but it does look thicker than what ive used in past projects.

Yes, you can fix it by sanding and reapplying. It might cost you a few hundred dollars more considering the material prices.

Emma, i too struggled with this part of the project. I did the same. Sanded the bad spots and patched them. I used way more resin in mine too. But that’s okay! Keep persevering. Your boat will float. I took Mine down to the river and floated it after I finished the bottom and flipped it over on the trailer even before I started the upper part of the hull. You go girl!

You're doing fine! Here's a tip..... you can dilute your resin with denatured alcohol to make it easier to work with and increase working time. A mixture of 90% resin and 10% denatured alcohol will not affect the strength of your resin.

    • @AccidentalSailorGirl
      @AccidentalSailorGirl 4 месяца назад +2

I wouldn’t recommend that. You mixed too much and when a lot sits in a container it generates heat and kicks fast. Mix smaller batches and pour them all out quickly and then on a flat surface and you have a lot more working time. Never thin resin when glassing. It can be done as a penetrating epoxy, but not for thinning for cloth. Keep your resin in a warm place so that it flows nice, once you add your hardener get it on the surface. It is nice to have someone who can mix your epoxy when you need it, but you can’t always have that. All the best ❤

Been binge watching this build and trust me anyone who has ever built a fiberglass covered wooden boat has been where you are at this point. One trick for others doing fiber glassing is after you mix the batch pour it into a paint roller pan to spread it out more as that will slow down the chemical curing enough to let you work it. Trust me on this as I have been there, done that before.

❤🎉 Go Emma! This is YOUR project, and YOUR series, you talk as much as YOU need/want to and move forward on your projects as YOU see fit. You are very brave and it's been a privilege to watch you tackle these projects that most wouldn't dare to attempt. Pretty much every mistake can be fixed, and if ya need to find a local brain to ask about the fiberglass stuff, look for a boat or RV repair auto body repair. And if you need help finding one of those, call your auto insurance agent, they should be able to point you in the right direction. Again, just my thoughts. Take em or leave em.
Have a great week ahead and thank you for making the world a better place by being an authentic inspiration to all! Be blessed.
P.S: As far as the keyboard construction quarterbacks, don't let em get to ya! If people don't care for the talking parts, they can turn down the speakers or skip forward on the video. They really need to learn to whine less and take a lesson from Thumper in Bambi "if they don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all." 😂

It'll float, never fear Emma. You're doing great - and I know resin can be a bugger to work with but it's an awesome medium. You can actually add a little denatured alcohol to your resin or divide the mixed resin into smaller portions (in separate containers) to extend the working time and avoid it going gummy. Keep up the good work girl, you're doing great. 😊😊

When I glued my first kayak, I first fixed the fiberglass tape on a wet spot, and then glued it dry, applying resin on top. The fiberglass fabric was well saturated and no bubbles formed. On sharp bends I trimmed and glued with an overlap. Then I sanded it and coated it with yacht varnish. The result was a “lens” effect. Sorry for my bad English, but I couldn’t remain silent looking at your suffering). I wish you success in your creativity - you are a true Creator.

Glassing is best done with 2 people One lays down the glass the other works behind getting everything smoothed, etc The boat will float I do more of the old methods cotton caulking steam bending when needed and those are not glassed :) Also the wider the container the longer the epoxy will stay liquid Painter's tray vs cup The deeper the epoxy the hotter it gets Thanks for a great vid Fun watching another boatwright :)

I feel every one of your doubts and mistakes cuz I’ve made them all and some I’ve forgotten. As a now proficient MacGyver of over 50 years I decided to build my houseboat on a stripped down tritoon. (A pontoon with three floats)
I decided that building the cabin and its infrastructure were enough challenges that didn’t need to also tackle building a hull.
I do so admire your drive to build it right and learn new stuff. That’s how I learned most of what I know. I’ll continue to watch and I do hope you eventually get to float your boat.

I could tell which one was 1st, 2nd and 3rd but no one else could tell. By the third wall the lines were pefect! So the rest of the walls in tge bathroom and the floor were flawless. Every so often I plan a job that way and really get good results.

For gaps and wider areas of things you might want to fill, use "thickened epoxy" or whatever others might call it. Chop up a bunch of fiberglass cloth finely and mix it into the epoxy before filling gaps or seams.

I like to put a piece of tape where I want the edges of the fiberglass to stop, the fiberglass over the tape. When the epoxy is cured to where it has a slight tack, cut along the tape with a razor to leave clean straight edges. After that apply a second coat, then when the second coat is just barely tacky aptly a third coat to fully fill the weave. I also buy cheap chip brushes then cut the bristles to half their length and use them to apply and spread the epoxy.

It will for sure float. I have no doubt on that. Considering it is the first time you do this (I’ve never done it either) it seems you are learning fast and the result still looks good to me. Have a great week and greetings from 🇳🇱👋.

Your struggles with the fiberglass brought back memories of my first boat build . It was an 8 foot pram that I built at 12 years old . Not a fan of working with it. You are doing a great job . 😊

My experience with fiber glass. All mistakes can be sanded out and patched. It gets easier each time. In the beginning, slow hardening mixes help you learn, as you get better go for faster hardening mixes. A fiber glass rolling pin works miracles. And you have to embrace thenfact that sanding is your friend.
You are doing just fine. Do not give up.😅😅😅
