    Episode Notes:
    1. Jet Set Radio Future was really a remake of the Dreamcast game before it. It wasn't all new content.
    2. Sega Forever and Sega Ages Switch were supposed to add games from consoles like the Saturn and Dreamcast. They generated a lot of hype. Of course, it never happened.
    3. Golden Axe in its traditional form has never been 3D. Beast Rider was a big change in terms of core design and mechanics.
    4. The prospect of an Outrun 3 has me most excited. if done with modern visuals and expanded tracks, this could be a monumental return to form.
    5. You can keep up with news straight from Sega themselves:

      A SEGA comeback is great for the industry and gamers. Time for Sega to get back in with a new console! We all know Sega could drop nukes on the industry with a new system that is cutting edge, but with great content. Sick of MS, especially them and what they seem to do, overall. We need a new Nintendo/Sega junk yard dog-fight for the 21st century.

      They have to be at least passable if Sega has any hope of lending credence to the “super game” it has been advertising to investors for a number of years now. I fully believe such a game will feature Sega’s classic IP, but if they shit the bed on this reboot effort, no one is going care about it. It’s a cynical take, but if we get great games out of it, I’ll be happy while safely dodging the Fortnite wannabe Sega wants to curse us with.

      @@Gatorade69 that’s kind of how I feel about it too. I love the game mostly because I see it through a nostalgic lens, and it evokes so many great childhood memories. And I agree, it had so much more potential and fell short in a few areas like the ones you mentioned. The inability to save was a huge factor that negatively affected the game. I wish there were at least a password system. But at a kid, it was really fu€king awesome.. the different masks/abilities were really cool. And the game is just so Sega, if that makes sense. So 90’s. I feel like with the right devs, they can remake the game into something really special. Let’s face it, a huge portion of games from our childhood, haven’t really aged well. Many of them are timeless and stood the test of time… I put Kid Chameleon somewhere in the middle.. especially cuz we have save states now. Anyway, I look forward to seeing what they do with it.

      It's unbelievable how Sega has been wasting every opportunity to relocate the Shining series in the current gaming landscape. Like, Fire Emblem had a huge breakthrough in the GBA and 3DS generations, and that wasnt enough motivation for Sega. And FE was even in disadvantage, because it was a Japan only game for the whole 90s, while Shining had western releases.
      The thing is that the series needs a severe gameplay rework, like FE got in the GBA games. The GBA remake of Shining Force still sticks to some archaic traits of the original that should have gone away. The gameplay, menus, etc need to be more dynamic and optimized like the modern FEs.
      Just do that, and I'm sure Shining Force can become a notable player in the rpg scene. Because SF always seemed like a more complete game compared to FE, having free navigation in the map and such.

      Perhaps you are not old enough to know.
      Sega fooled everyone repeatedly for about a decade.
      Early 1992 "Hey, we have a great new light gun for your Genesis, it is the Menacer, and it will give you YEARS of great games!"
      So, we buy a Menacer, and it literally only ever supports TWO Genesis games including the one it comes with (and six Sega CD games)
      1992 "Hey, trust us, you don't need a new system, just get a Sega CD, and you will have YEARS of new games"
      So, we buy a Sega CD. Barely anything worth buying actually releases in the next two years.
      1994 "Hey, trust us, you don't need to worry about 3DO, Jaguar, and Virtual Boy, just get a Sega 32X, and you will have YEARS of new games.
      So, we buy a Sega 32X. Barely anything worthy buying actually releases in the next year.
      1995 "Hey, trust us, you don't need a Playstation, you want a Sega Saturn! No, it doesn't run Sega CD or 32X games. It is going to give you YEARS of new games, though.
      So, we buy a Sega Saturn, which ends up never having a real Sonic title developed for it, but it does have some cool games like Nights. It also has no compatibility with any other Sega product on the market, which is a strange decision considering this was a time when Nintendo had long since released the Super Game Boy. One would have expected at least some type of reward for Saturn gamers who already owned another Sega system, but there was nothing for them.
      Oh, but wait, there was also 1995 "Hey stores, trust us, we are going to be releasing Saturn this fall."
      So stores planned on a fall release, and then Sega did a secret deal with only a few retailers, and released Saturn in summer instead as a surprise. This did not work out. Consumers were confused by the lack of a marketing campaign warning them of the release, and major retailers were angry they were not included in the secret advance release, and some refused to ever carry Sega Saturn products in the future.
      Late 1996: "Hey, trust us, you just need the new 3D controller, and you can play games with an analog stick on the Sega Saturn. It is going to give you YEARS of new games.
      So, we buy a 3D controller, and it only ends up being used by about 30 or 40 games anybody has ever heard of, and about as many unknown Japanese games which never made it to the US.
      1998: "Hey, trust us, we are working on something HUGE"
      Meanwhile, they burn bridges with 3DFX and get sued while partnering with PowerVR in a bid to save money which does not work out. EA drops support for the console over the move. The loss of EA is not small.
      1999: "Hey, trust us, Sega Dreamcast is going to work. Look, we even have Visual Concepts to replace Electronic Arts, and our NFL game is great.
      So, we buy a Sega Dreamcast, but Bernie Stolar prices it incorrectly against the objections of Sega in Japan and it releases at $199, instead of the agreed on $249, and they lose hundreds of millions of dollars within a year, and have to end their console line. It was really probably that simple. If every buyer had paid $249 from the beginning, Sega likely would have made it to a Dreamcast 2. $50 per buyer sank Sega.
      I also did not mention their attempts which failed, like the Game Gear, which appeared to be a genuine attempt at success which just did not come to be as they intended. Everyone has that, though. Virtual Boy was terrible. PS Vita wasn't great. The problem was that Sega did it over and over for almost a full decade.
      That is what OP was talking about when he said "fooled"...
      I hope you enjoyed this little history lesson.

    My only hopes is that those games aren't online only (Game as a service) and do have a physical release but I'm pretty sure a couple of them will be only digital or get the Limited Run treatment!
    Hopefully a new Kid Chameleon and Eternal Champions (hopefully a fighting game) are a thing!

    • @KID_JEDI_76
      @KID_JEDI_76 8 месяцев назад

      If those two games do in fact really end up as a "games as a service", it doesn't matter if it is on disc, it WILL require a constant online connection. Three games that come to my mind that have had a physical release and are online only are Anthem and Destiny 1 & 2. I believe Overwatch had a physical release as well, and all four are "Games As A Service", and require a constant online connection. But I'm just hoping that won't be the case for Crazy Taxi and JSR.

    • @alxofficial1541
      @alxofficial1541 8 месяцев назад

      The fact the games as a service is a phrase that is said like it should be normal is sad and gives me zero hope for these games. People like you and everyone in this comment section asking for remakes of great games are the problem and the reason why gaming is the way it is.

    • @KID_JEDI_76
      @KID_JEDI_76 8 месяцев назад

      @@alxofficial1541 No one is "asking for remakes". The discussion is that after all these years Sega is finally "resurrecting" several of their dormant IP's that are loved by fans all over the world and are making new sequels.
      With this news, there are early "reports, leaks or wordings" from patents filed by Sega, stating that so far, the new (not remakes or remasters) JSR and Crazy Taxi will possibly be a "games as a service" (GaaS). And as we all know, GaaS games has to have new content regularly or quarterly in order to survive. It is generally content that should have been included into the base game but is sold as microtransactions with the sole purpose to milk the consumer dry of their money, and if and when said game is not profiting or "consumer engagement" is not there anymore, the game is taken offline and is gone forever.
      All we want are amazing, proper singleplayer sequels to games like Shinobi that we can own without the need of a constant online connection.

  • @Hamdad
    @Hamdad 8 месяцев назад +32

    What an invigorating new direction. No longer shamelessly wallowing in pure nostalgia. Instead, daring to reach for something greater; classic IPs, yes, but properly evolved according to modern standards. Carrying forward what made Sega great in the past, but not as lazy rom bundles or ports. Proper modern incarnations, as if Sega never suffered a dark age. This is real ambition! A new chapter for Sega that feels like the same thrilling electric vibe as they had at their peak.

The FM synthesis tracks, especially that first level is top 5 best Sega OST and the key mechanic of mixing your rings for different powers was pretty different from alot of other action platformers. A 2d or 2.5d new game could utilize controllers with more than 3 buttons so you could assign 2 or 3 preset ring combos to swap on-the-fly instead of having to pause everytime you want to change them would fix the only real issue that slows down gameplay
