I have to agree! 1998 was a huge moment for me as a gamer, as that was around the time I had gotten my first PlayStation. Unfortunately I was a bit too young to be able to take in metal gear at the time, but it was the beginning of my life long fondness for the series forsure! I may have to cover 1998 in the future 😎 thanks for watching!

Two games that I would add to the list: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Amazing games that defined my love for those franchises. This was truly the year wheen I fell in love with gaming. Edit: Just googled that San Andreas and KOTOR 2 came out on the PC in 2005. For us PC gamers, I guess that 2005 is the peak year.
I've still yet to delve into the Warhammer 40k series, definitely looking to change that soon though! As for Kotor 2, it was definitely my a top tier Star Wars game in my book. Would honestly love to see a reimagining of it in present day 😅 2004 was just the year of the Console it seemed like 😝
Great video and a great year! I would love to see something like this for my favorite year for games, 2007. Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3, Uncharted, Cod4, Assassin's Creed, Portal, The Witcher, TF2, Rock Band, Crysis, HL2: Ep 2, Guitar Hero 3, Skate, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, The Orange Box, and God of War 2, all came out in 2007. It was a great year for new IPs that carried on for a long time, along with some sequals that are considered some of the best in their respective series.
what a FREAKING amazing year for gaming, my GOODNESS!!. Metroid prime 2 echoes, half life 2, counter strike source, dragon quest 8, doom 3, halo 2, ratchet and clank up your arsenal, kotor 2, world of warcraft AND GTA san andreas all came out the same FREAKING YEAR????? Again, my goodness!!
I was born in 2004, but I have fond memories of Playing Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 growing up. That came out in 2004, and despite the outdated graphics It’s still a solid title for the time and even today, especially with its waterpark and zoo dlc, as well as its mod support.
That’s dope. I have a similar relationship to Link’s Awakening on GB. I was born in 93 (same year as the game) but played the hell out of it as a kid on my GBC.
A great year in gaming is when there is a high quality game for almost each and every single group of gamers. Even back then it was rare to see all interests scratched at once in the market, 2004 stands as an exceptional time in those regards.
The 6th generation in general was the best generation for video games. I honestly think video games have already peaked in that generation, especially in the years 2004-2005. That two year run was insane. Resident Evil 4 Metal Gear Solid 3 Ninja Gaiden Black Half Life 2 Halo 2 San Andreas Devil May Cry 3 World of Warcraft Shadow of the Colossus God of War Dragon Quest VIII Chaos Theory Metroid Prime 2 Civilization IV Unreal Tournament Battlefield 2 and many more. The fact that all of these games came out months from each other is ridiculous.
You left out my favorite release year 2006. Which holds majority of my favorite games. One could do the same vidio for 2006, which doesn't make the release year 2004 unique.
Even sports games were amazing in 2004. It’s crazy how we got NFL Street, 1 Fight Night 2004 NBA Live 05, Madden 05, THUG 2, WWE Smackdown vs Raw and NFL Street 2 all in the same year it was truly a golden age you had to live through.
Ridick: Escape from Butcher Bay was seriously underated and is now a cult classic. It was among the first FPS games to show your own body when you looked down, VERY immersive and cinematic game. Graphicaly very impressive at the time, almost on par with Doom 3 graphics
Great video mate. I bought a new graphics card for my PC in 2004 (an ATI x800 Pro) specifically because of the new games coming out, the advancements in graphics that year was huge - HL2 and Doom especially. Seeing those games for the first time on my PC monitor was jaw dropping. As for Unreal Tournament, I've probably lost entire years of my life to playing that XD
It really was incredible, especially seeing how much visually improved games like HL2 were at that time! If I would have had a decent set up back then, I definitely would have been an avid Unreal player. My parents office computer could only keep up with RuneScape 😂 So glad you enjoyed the video though brother, thank you for watching!
EA seemed to be at the top of their game. Not only just Burnout 3 and Def Jam, but every EA Sports title that came out in ‘04 is widely considered the greatest of its sport, even today. Madden 05, NBA Live 05, NASCAR 05, MVP Baseball 04, NHL 2005, and Fight Night 2004. The Sims 2 (technically) also came out, which is a title people still hold near and dear.
I was a college student in 2004 and I will admit it was hard getting to class when San Andreas came out. My roommates and I put in some real time playing GTA, MGS3, Gran Turismo 4 and NFS Underground in particular. Those are four of my favorite game franchises and I think we got the best in each franchise at this time, with the exception of NFS. Most Wanted is king for them. I can still remember playing GT4 while listening to Green Day's American Idiot all day long.
Brings a tear to my eye 🥲 I was in middle school at the time, but man it was hard to concentrate in school with all the great games that were waiting to be played at home 😅
A man wiser than myself once said "Nostalgia is a form of depression". However true that is, it's really bloody hard to not be nostalgic for the early - late 2000's in gaming. The culture was at its' peak with E3, the Tokyo shows, the early days of internet engagement, the early adoption of multiplayer gaming, LAN parties, the golden age of many big-name companies . . . You can't possibly understand if you weren't knee deep in it. As a longtime gamer since the NES days, I had never seen anything like it whatsoever. It was pure magic. It felt like it was everything that gaming was building up to. 2004 was legendary, no joke, but I feel like you could choose any year from 2000 up until maybe 2009 and not be wrong. Watching your videos, I feel like you "get" it, and I love it.
You’re not wrong! It’s hard not to indulge in the magical feeling of that era. And as much as I know those days are far in the past, it still feels just as enjoyable to play all of the many great games from that time 😁 We’re blessed to have gotten to witness such a time for gaming! But I really appreciate your support, I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the channel! ❤️
2004 was great, but nothing, NOTHING compares to the absolutely behemothian peak of gaming that was the year 1998. We got: Ocarina Of Time, Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life, Starcraft, Pokemon R&B, Grim Fandango, Resident Evil 2, Thief, DDR, Parasite Eve, Banjo-Kazooie, Klonoa, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Fallout2, Baldur's Gate, Xenogear, Mario Party, Rainbow Six, MediEvil, Oddworld: Abe's Exoddys, FF Tactics, Soul Calibur, Myth 2, Gran Turismo, Tekken 3... and many, many others! But in general, 1995-2005 was the absolute Golden Age of all video games. It's been endless decline since then.
You're not wrong my friend! Sometimes I envy those who were old enough to comprehend the massive catalogue of games in 98. I was definitely gaming then, but just couldn't follow storylines the way I could until I was a bit older xD I played a wholllleee lot of tekken 2 back then tho!
I agree! I can’t even say it was just nostalgia, the sixth generation just brought something special to gaming that remains great even in present day 😁
@@kahlerwhale9839 Absolutely! I still think devs are doing an amazing job in present day, but unfortunately all of their decisions have to be approved by those who are ridden with greed, and could care less about a game 🥺
2004-2007 I’d say were some of the best years of gaming… just look at the timeline for Xbox 360 releases starting in 2006. Those first two years brought SO many amazing games! The fact 2004 is now 20 years ago also is mind blowing.
I gotta agree! Those were some solid years for gaming, probably some of my favorites by far! I really loved Condemned at the 360 launch, as well as the first Saints Row!
I was 9 in 2004 and I still remember getting Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Halo 2 and Mortal Kombat Deception all on Christmas. I'm pretty sure these games came out within a month of each other.
Damn... Every year or two I do a re-run of NFS Underground 2, one of the best OSTs to this day still has a place in my car stereo's USB. Gran Tursimo 4's OST chimes in my headphones during work. And from time to time I launch a WH40k Dawn of War session - albeit Dark Crusade, but still. 2004 will live on in my heart.
I'm in my 40s. Gaming is better now than ever. You don't even need to buy games, so many are free to play. We miss our younger selves more than the games. As much as I loved Mario and Sonic, I would play those games for an hour then get bored.
I definitely see where you’re going, and there’s still tons of great games, but I personally do enjoy the simplicity of older games more than the current ones 😅 Nostalgia can definitely carry certain games tho lol
2004 might be my second favorite gaming year, but my heart will always belong to 2001. * Xbox release + Halo * Gamecube release + Melee (and Pikmin) * GBA release * MGS2 * GTA 3 * THPS 3 * Ico * Silent Hill 2 * Final Fantasy X * Devil May Cry * Gran Turismo 3 * Ace Combat 04 * Weaker year for PC but still had Civ 3, Max Payne, and collection of solid expansion packs (Baldur's Gate 2, Diablo 2, Red Alert 2)
I was 15 in 2004, and let me tell you, i would do literally ANYTHING to go back even for a day to live through that era again 🥲, an ocean full of incredible memories now, truly was a magical time back then, i could write an essay here on how amazing everything was in the early 2000s but let’s just leave it on magical ❤ And the gaming was special. Taking care of your burned discs for the PS2 and playing on a small CRT while relying on your local gaming magazines bcs there was no RUclips or internet or any of that shit was…🤤……….❤……….👑
@@MasterChef-officialThere was, but it was in its infancy compared to today’s internet, that’s what i meant. Not as nearly as developed nor common to be exact.. even that xbox live or console online gaming In general was still in its dipers, that took off with the PS3/360 era
The era for demo disk too! I remember getting so many cool and unique demo disk back in the day. My disk folder was full to the brim with tons of content
I feel you on that 08 crash my friend, almost took everything from my family and I. Luckily I was able to enjoy gaming still, even though we didn’t have access to internet for many years 😅 Hope things are going much better for you now!
G4 was a huge inspiration in making this video! Very glad to hear that it reminded you of that 😁 I still regularly play my old consoles as well, they never get old!
I had the original Xbox ,this was the last generation me and my friends got together playing multiplayer on split screen. But this generation would be the last time with my friends as we all moved on and became parents..I still game online but wish friends did.
Dang my boy, your taste in video games is super mainstream. Not mad at it though, it was definitely a golden age. The DS and PSP also dropped in 2004, and one of my favorites, Zelda: the minish cap. All adding to your point.
It definitely was at that time! I’ve begun to dive a little more into the obscure nowadays. I just had to run with the hype train back in those days tho 😅 thank you for watching btw!
Another game that I completely forgot came out in 2004, star wars battlefront! So much time spent playing that back in the day, love the video! Looks like im gonna boot up the good ole PS2
Prince of Persia Warrior Within came out the same year too. I miss this era so much, I was 13 in 2004. It really was a magical time, lightning in a bottle. It was way way before battle royales, season passes, and micro transactions. I really did enjoy and miss the 7th generation as well.
It sucks I was 2 years old and didnt get the chance to play these when they came out. Glad I got to go back and play them now! All great games and had an amazing time! (Half- Life 2 got me through high school!!!)
Damn i should've known someone else would make this video haha. When it dawned on me the titles that came out this year my first thought was to make a video on it, but I'll just watch yours instead lol. Good job!
I really appreciate that my friend! Very glad that you enjoyed 😁 But also, don’t let that stop you from mama your own video! There’s tons of great games I had left out, and plus, we all have our own unique way of creating content so definitely make that video still!
2004, 2007, 2010… all epic years. Original COD on PC came out in 2003 and its expansion pack came out 2004 united offensive - changed the FPS one man army to being a part of a team formula forever
One thing I'd add is 2005 is an equally important year, because of not just the banger titles that came out (NFS Most Wanted, Civilization IV, F.E.A.R.), but also the fact PC hardware saw some unique developments, like dual-core CPUs, the slow yet eventual proliferation of Shader Model 3.0, and also Microsoft's first punch in the 7th generation of consoles with the Xbox 360. It seemed as if the momentum of innovation would never stop.
You're correct! 2004 was personally my favorite for nostalgia reasons, but 2005 was absolutely coming in heavy with the new advances in hardware, and next gen gaming. I may have to do a video covering it in the future!
Damn I forgot how great 2004 was for gaming. I remember getting Metal Gear Solid 3 for Christmas with my cousin that year and played that game all day and night
U left couple great games of 2004 Bro... I think 4 sure u Play Fable and Far Cry . And GG platformers like Jak 3 , Ratchet and Clank 3 , Sly 2 and Prince of Persia Warrior within . Anyway great list thanks 4 sharing with us, that was real back to best year in gaming. Ty Bro
There were so many more that I wanted to add! I just tried my best to level it down to 10 😅 Definitely a year of legendary releases tho, I could honestly find enough games to make a part 2 on it 😆 But very glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for watching ❤️
@@Vynsent *they're talking about a remake of sorts...I think the biggest issue is music copyrights and the cost of it.....but they could remove all the music and just add random instrumentals, game would still be amazing* 👍
Tried figuring out what a ten year golden era of gaming would be but couldn't. Had to settle on 1992 to 2004. Lots of franchises either started or took off, lots of classics, paved the way for the big games that came after.

I was still in elementary school back then, and could only experience these games through game magazines. If only I could go back and experience them firsthand.
Good video, even if I am a little too young to relate to some of these being your childhood games (for me the Skylanders and Batman: Arkham games are very nostalgic).
The late 90s to the mid 2010s I can say was the freaking golden era of the gaming. To imagine coming far to being a gamer whose look at impressive games that was given to us as little kids, teenagers, even as young adults back at the time. When I was little I seen some of the greatest games to ever be from the 5th generation to the 8th generation of console gaming. Now in the 2020s it’s fallen from grace of some unfinished games, diminishing franchises destroy by the company owning them, and lack of attention and focus to listening to the fan bases that would want the industry to do the right things for games.
It's definitely sad to see! I'm hopeful for the future though! If the industry wants to make it's money, they've gotta start listening to their players. And I'm hopeful they will begin to do so!
it is insane the amount of high regarded titles came out in 04 alone, and then getting RE4 in Jan of 05, and then Star Wars BF2, Shadow of the Colossus later in 05'
Battle for Middle Earth, Warhammer: Dawn of War, Rome Total War, NFSU2, Half Life 2, UT2004, GTA San Andreas...good times.. But Halo 2 broke the internet when that launched! I remember the trams/buses back here in Melbourne decked out in Halo 2 art for the big launch!
That’s so cool! Unfortunately I never attended the halo 2 launch, but my mom was cool enough to go out and get it while I was at school 😁 The funny thing is, I remember being a bit disappointed because I was hoping for San Andreas, but me and my buddies got right to some couch co-op 😆
2004 was awesome for games. I laughed my butt off when I saw people saying 2023 was "the greatest year for gaming." My first thought was, "How low have standards fallen?" And my second thought was, "What terrible standards are being set for younger people who genuinely believe that 2023 was a good year for games?"
1998 (has to be the definite greatest year in gaming) Ocarina of Time Metal Gear Solid Golden Eye 007 Gran Turismo Pokemon Red/Blue Final Fantasy VII Tekken 3 Half-Life Resident Eil 2 NFL Blitz
2005 is tied with 2004 for me. 2005 gave us the best stealth game of all time and the best racing games of all time. We got Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Gran Turismo 4, and Need For Speed Most Wanted
Great video! You forgot about Tekken 5 though!! I really miss the old days of gaming though too, and I've been spending a lot of time emulating PS2 games and such to make up for it. I hope we get another PS2 level renaissance of gaming in the future!
Tekken 5 was definitely a banger! It was difficult even narrowing this list down to 10 games, so many more that I could’ve included 😅 But I have to agree! I very much hope to see something as special as the PS2 era one day, but it’s hard to say that we will given how far the technology has already come. We just need more games to find their soul again!
I usually siff through long videos, but this vid was so well made, i sat down & watched it. Dope video my guy 👌👏 Man we really didnt know how good we got it, getting all these dope games back in the day. It was just normal to get bangers & hit games every few months. Now we can barely get any decent games nowadays 😅
I miss 2004 so much. Alot of was more nostalgia based for me as i was only 6. But i got my ps2 for my bday that year and a copy of Spiderman 2 the videogame for it. And i remember how much that game blew my young self away.
Maaan, I was just thinking about how great spiderman 2 was recently. I also got it for my birthday that year! I remember how amazing it was swinging around that vast open world xD
Man, what a stacked year. I was in trade school at the time so I played most of these when they were brand new. WoW was the big one, i'm watching this video while I play Classic right now
That’s awesome man! I was a big WoW head at that time as well. Me and my buddies were obsessed. Nothing like exploring the world of Azeroth when it was brand new!

I've still yet to delve into the Warhammer 40k series, definitely looking to change that soon though! As for Kotor 2, it was definitely my a top tier Star Wars game in my book. Would honestly love to see a reimagining of it in present day 😅 2004 was just the year of the Console it seemed like 😝
I was born in 04 but my brothers was born in early 90s so I grew up watching everything from game cube and first Xbox
That’s dope! Did you guys ever play any of those old school games together once you had gotten older?
Great video and a great year! I would love to see something like this for my favorite year for games, 2007. Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3, Uncharted, Cod4, Assassin's Creed, Portal, The Witcher, TF2, Rock Band, Crysis, HL2: Ep 2, Guitar Hero 3, Skate, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, The Orange Box, and God of War 2, all came out in 2007. It was a great year for new IPs that carried on for a long time, along with some sequals that are considered some of the best in their respective series.
2007 was amazing, you're not lying! I'm very happy to see you mentioned skate :) One of my favorites!
what a FREAKING amazing year for gaming, my GOODNESS!!.
It really was an insane year for gaming. It was really hard for me to even boil the list down to only 10 games 😅 Love your profile pic btw!
haha thanks! @@Vynsent
Loved the older tycoon games in the late 90's! Tons of fun
One of the greatest platformers in my opinion came out in 2004, Sly 2! Such a great time and the peak of the series in my opinion
Love sly! I thought about including it actually 😅
@@VynsentSly Cooper holds a special place in many hearts of playstation gamers from the early to mid 2000s
Was looking for this comment. The Sly Cooper trilogy are my favorite games ever!
Sly 2 the best one for sure. 1 isn’t fully realized and 3 kinda starts to get a little stale, and the extra party members mostly suck
Sly 3 was better imo, and Dr. Muto is the best platformer on the ps2.
1998, 2004, 2007, and 2011 were the best years in gaming history
Those were some of my favorites as well!
2013 too then 15, 17, 18 and then it was a wrap
A great year in gaming is when there is a high quality game for almost each and every single group of gamers. Even back then it was rare to see all interests scratched at once in the market, 2004 stands as an exceptional time in those regards.
Absolutely! There was something great for every type of gamer!
The 6th generation in general was the best generation for video games. I honestly think video games have already peaked in that generation, especially in the years 2004-2005. That two year run was insane.
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid 3
Ninja Gaiden Black
Half Life 2
Halo 2
San Andreas
Devil May Cry 3
World of Warcraft
Shadow of the Colossus
God of War
Dragon Quest VIII
Chaos Theory
Metroid Prime 2
Civilization IV
Unreal Tournament
Battlefield 2
and many more.
The fact that all of these games came out months from each other is ridiculous.
It really was insane! All I know is that Christmas of 04 was absolutely legendary at GameStop that year lmao
You left out my favorite release year 2006. Which holds majority of my favorite games. One could do the same vidio for 2006, which doesn't make the release year 2004 unique.
Underrated youtuber needs more recognition.
I really appreciate that 🌹 I do my best!
Ahh, NFL street was absolutely amazing! Also NBA ballers!
NFL 2k5! the goat football game
Def Jam Fight for NY was my favorite “sports” game of 2004!
@@victormanuelperez92 Such a classic :)
Ridick: Escape from Butcher Bay was seriously underated and is now a cult classic.
It was among the first FPS games to show your own body when you looked down, VERY immersive and cinematic game. Graphicaly very impressive at the time, almost on par with Doom 3 graphics
I agree! Loved that game as a kid! Probably one of the best Movie License games ever 😎
I miss the early 2000s era. The games, shows, movies, commercials 😭
They were the best! I don’t even think it’s a nostalgia thing either, everything just had a much better vibe to it!
Somebody create a Time Machine so we can all go back to the days where video games were once awesome.
I wish! 🫠
Metroid Prime 2 definitely more than deserves to be on this list
It’s crazy that 2004 was 20 years ago
Time flies 🥲 Was a great year!!
Yup
The fact that Half-Life 2 is not even in the thumbnail is a testament of how great that year was indeed.
I was gonna put Gordon in the thumbnail I just couldn’t get it to look right 😂
You made great use of the editing style G4 used back then - very authentic! :D
The style of this video was heavily influenced by Xplay, so I’m very happy to hear that! Thank you for watching 😁
Brings back some good memories i was 17 in 2004 time flys great vid ❤
Glad you enjoyed my friend! We were both living it up at that time no doubt, feels good to reminisce on those days 😁
I was 3 years old back then on my dad's computer and the world was so mysterious and vast
Ahhh, loved that feeling! There was so much to explore 😎
The age where big company showing off their games instead of their cash
The golden age!
6th Gen Consoles will probably remain the greatest console generation for years to come. God, I wish I could go back.
I agree! I can’t even say it was just nostalgia, the sixth generation just brought something special to gaming that remains great even in present day 😁
@@Vynsent I think there was a lot of hungry developers back then.
@@Vynsent playing that first saints row… pure comedy. Such good times!
@@MarcussJay Seriously 🤣 Used to stay up all night playing with friends, seeing who could cause the most mayhem. Good times!
I was 9 in 2004 and I still remember getting Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Halo 2 and Mortal Kombat Deception all on Christmas. I'm pretty sure these games came out within a month of each other.
I believe they did! I feel like 2004 was the ultimate Christmas for gamers, absolutely stacked 😁
Unreal Tournament 2004 just hits hard, what a game & it's a disgrace how quality a game like that is now as forgotten as it is. Only real ones know
I agree man! Wish they would bring the official servers back and put it on steam. Could drive new and old players in!
Absolutely! Was an incredible year for both gaming and music forsure☺️
* Xbox release + Halo
* Gamecube release + Melee (and Pikmin)
* GBA release
* MGS2
* GTA 3
* THPS 3

* Gran Turismo 3
* Ace Combat 04

Ahhh It definitely was a phenomenal year! I was just playing Pro Skater 3 actually! One of my faves :)
It’s debatable 1998 and 2007 were also amazing

I’m always aiming to bring the nostalgia, so very glad you enjoyed 😁❤️ Thank you for watching!
