    Bass player is keyboard player Paul Humphreys, the bass is normally played by lead singer Andy McCluskey. Try Souvenir next.
    **fun fact** OMD appeared on BBC programme Old Grey Whistle Test with ZZ Top, who were so impressed that it influenced their use of synths for their next three albums.
    If you go deeper into the OMD rabbit hole, you will discover Andy's windmill dancing...

    So you've done some OMD songs by now, but still no Maid Of Orleans. Believe me, that one will give you goosebumps, it's definitely a special song, one of the greatest of the 80s. I still get emotional everytime I hear it.

    The guitar and bass rhythms that float underneath the keyboard arpeggio is what really helps make this song magical. It is subtle in the mix, but it carries the song along. If you see OMD in concert, chances are they play this one early because it gets the crowd going. Usually they play it within the first 3 songs.

      @@MikePaterson OMD is extremely underrated and Andy McCluskey is one of the best frontmen around. I've seen them 5 times (1988 Rose Bowl, 1991, 2010, 2017 and 2022 Greek Theater). I even saw Paul Humphreys and Claudia Brucken in the early 2000s when he performed a few OMD songs. This year's show at the Greek was as good or better as any other time I have seen them. Pretty remarkable because the band members are in their upper 60s.

    The ostinato synth pad that runs throughout 'Messages' has been used, or interpreted many times - and very well too.
    For starters, in 2002, the Cosmos project, from producer Tom Middleton, merged that ostinato synth together with the opening synth arpeggio from the 1983 Depeche Mode single 'Get The Balance Right' to create the intro to a dance classic called 'Take Me With U', in collaboration with vocalist Andrew Roachford (you may recall his band's 1989 hit 'Cuddly Toy').
    In the very same year, Simple Minds' 2002 album 'Cry' climaxed with a Vince Clarke-penned instrumental track called 'The Floating World', which used the melodic notes of 'Messages' ostinato synth, but with a different synth pad sound.
    I've noticed other posts on this page mentioning other examples. It's a well worth researching topic of discussion.

    For me this song was ground zero of electronic music. There was disco in 79 and this in 1980..

    • @tortieville1984
      @tortieville1984 2 года назад

      In the U.S., OMD unfortunately wasn't known until around 1984 or so, except for college radio. The bridge songs from disco to electronic/new wave were Blondie's "Heart of Glass" (combined disco/new wave feel) and Gary Numan's "Cars". Blondie was a disco act, but those synth swells and filtered bass gave "Heart of Glass" an electronic new wave vibe. "Cars" was so different at the time to anything else that was out by artists like the Rolling Stones, Kenny Rogers, Juice Newton, etc. It was weird hearing nightly top 5 countdowns on AM radio and hearing Cars played along side traditional pop/rock/disco songs.

    • @vanburger
      @vanburger 2 года назад

      I remember distinctly where I was when I heard this song I was 16 the sound was weirdly familiar because I had been fed a diet of euro disco in the gay clubs since I had been going from the age of 14 to Manchester uk. We have never had ID cards. In the merge from disco to electro I distinctly remember OMD first followed by DA DA DA by Trio and Fade to grey. Wether or not that's the correct chronological order or not I'm unsure. Try listening to something like Savage lover by The Ring as to why it's a bit of a blur.
