I was going to post this. Get the banquet table size and you can cut chunks to a decent controllable size. It has saved my "craft area", aka the dining room table.
While you're at it, go to any decent fabric store and just buy suitably colored fabric instead of putzing around with foam. Cut to whatever shape or shapes you want, dye or paint in patterns if you really feel ambitious (although icy greens or frosty whites are easy to come by), and don't waste time on this kind of project. All he's really doing is making a flat colored surface here, which is what cloth is for if you're not springing for one of those fancy (and expensive) play mats or pre-printed maps/tiles. Prof spent more on that bottle of GW paint alone than a similar sized swatch of cloth would have cost. Foam has plenty of uses for 3D terrain, but making flats out of it? No. Just plain no.
@@richmcgee434 You're wrong and you should feel wrong lol. The foam will hold up much longer than the fabric, and is used for the 3d effect to bring the game to life.
@@richmcgee434 You'll certainly get a different look using cloth rather than painting on foam - though it's definitely a good idea to use cheap craft paints instead of expensive mini paints, which I believe PDM did - Apple Barrel is typically $2.00 for each bottle, if not less. What the video may not capture is that layers of paint like that actually does create texture in addition to color, which for this project in particular would be highly desirable. But! If cloth looks good to you and you like it, more power to you! Whatever gets people to play at the table.
For the painting and other work, just find some of the large, cheap, plastic trash bags. They can get tossed easily enough and are portable for if you want to work in different places, and by being movable, you can find bits and pieces of things that might get loose.
Professor, your videos are so entertaining. I don’t even craft at all, but I love watching your process. I also admire your honest appreciation of those who have inspired you and that you have learned from. Well done.

We need more Deathbringer. Deathbringer the backstory videos! Deathbringer the Belgariad Knock-off! Deathbringer the one-player campaign! Deathbringer the lunchbox! Deathbringer the flamethrower! (I'm serious about 4 of those.)
Spaceballs references aside. Deathbringer, MacDeath, and assorted PDM NPC T-shirts and Coffee Mugs would be awesome, once we have helped him grow his channel more.
You, sir, are the best. I want to thank you for your content, especially since there was a piece you did on how to write notes for session prep that was INVALUABLE! I would love to see more content like that. Thanks again
thanks Prof DM, I did a digital version of thise recently and OMG IT WORKS SO WELL! Instead of drawing up and making maps on the PC I just did a close-medium-far circle thing on a VTT and it worked AMAZINGLY!
I had a week to produce 15 Stalingrad type ruins for a 40K game. I knew it was going to be a mess, pva, black paint, grey paint, gravel and sand, bits of coffee stirrer, airbrushing, then the clean up. All to be done in the kitchen. This was not just one building discreetly made but a whole production line. It was all done over a week between 10.30 pm and up to 2am some nights. And Mrs B to this day does not know that it all happened in her lovely kitchen.
Great video! Made one of these for my upcoming Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign, only for my glazes/washes I used Pledge Floor Polish instead of water, to thin the paint. It dries hard, glossy, and gives a water/reflective look over the center ring, exactly what I wanted for a frozen lake effect!
This zoned approach to terrain also works really well for The One Ring TTRPG combat encounters where there aren't movement rules per se. Instead, characters have stances which determine if they're ranged (opening volleys in One Ring parlance) or in melee (close quarters in One Ring parlance)
THE Bob World Builder?! Just watched your session Zero video. GREAT episode. I'm going mention your channel and Bardy McFly in my upcoming session Zero episode. Look for it.
I've never seen you smile so much in a video professor. It's great to see. (whispering out of the corner of my mouth) Wink if Mrs. Professor Dungeon Master has you locked in the dungeon
looks similar to my arctic terrain... I ended up using a pearlescent white to get a shimmer, and I coated mine in a clear glitter sealer ( for just a little sparkle when the light hits it)
Lmao your “why 6am?” Answer got me XD I won’t lie. Also, loved this so very much! I actually have a project I’ll be working on that’ll be able to use this technique, I can’t wait to try it
Looks great! I made my own arctic UDT a couple months ago, but I’ve been thinking about making a new one with better techniques. The first one was a prototype
LOVE the Frozen Pizza. But it's not for Frostgrave as it is a skirmish game for 2-4 players on a 3X3 square play area with city ruins that are setup as part of the setup rules. But it is still a great setup for tabletop RPG's. Waiting to be able to go to Ikea to get a large lazy-susan. (sexist term maybe, but that is what they call it here!) Cheers to Prof Dungeon Master and his icy play area.
How do you handle hazardous terrain and environments in your games? Such as a frozen tundra, desert, a world with spontaneous tornadoes, flash flooding, etc. I'd love to see an episode on this!! Thanks, PDM!
As a Canadian from Northern Ontario, your Arctic 🥶 terrain gets two thumbs up 👍! But sorry Professor, there is nothing I can do or say to save you from the wrath of Mrs Dungeon Master! I think you’re going to have hope to that the magic of a blue box 📦 from Tiffanies will save! Today is not a day to be cheap! 🤣👍🤣
Thanks for risking your life PDM. It's good you shared your sources so I can see how much better they are. Oh no! Caught on camera, thankfully Mrs PDM didn't slay you on the spot.
The links you mentioned in the video are missing Also, for ice, adding a thick layer of gloss polyeurethane varnish before the snow paste would upgrade the look. I'd also suggest going with the vallejo snow ground texture rather than the GW option, it's close to the same stuff, but far cheaper for a lot more.
OK, now for ultimate volcano terrain and ultimate ship terrain and ultimate gold and gem mine terrain and ultimate milky way terrain and ultimate heaven terrain and ultimate undersea terrain and ultimate cyberspace terrain!
The first photo you showed of an iceberg I thought "oh come on, that's clearly foam." Apparently not. I suppose that means it's possible to make ice terrain that looks more real than the real thing!
Awesome painting techniques! I will try my hand. I was wondering, are you planning on making a hellscape one? I am doing a Descent to Avernus campaign and that would be perfect.
Can you make a reversible UDT that is a forest/grassy on one side and a swamp on the other, please? Would it be the first UWT? (Ultimate Wilderness Terrain)
Lovely. The 'fozen pizza' will really come in handy for everybody playing Rime of the Frostmaiden
I was thinking of an Icewind Dale setting as well. I have my Remorhazz all painted.
