After your less than stellar experience with Tanduay Gold, I am very happy that you chose Tanduay Double Rum as your next choice for Filipino rums. I skipped the Gold, based on reviews and went straight to the Double Rum. Filipino rums aren't that great overall, but the Double Rum is phenomenal. The extra aging is a game changer. A perma-stock for me. Probably the best Filipino rum there is.
Appleton 8 will always be a mainstay in my bar…..but I’m a BIG fan of the 12 and 15. Bacardi 8 is my favourite Bacardi ….that said the 10 is a nice drop aswell
24:30 For kinda serious rum folk, and others that like good rum, Appleton 8 is just spectacular. I like it better than the 12, but thats just me. Avoid the Appelton Signature, there is not much going on. I suggest spend the extra and get the one to savor.
Havana 7 was my first step into proper rum after Captain. It’s readily available in most bars, makes a great rum ‘n’ coke also great with ginger beer, still enjoy it today
Hey steve, great show, welcome back into the Appleton fold. I think kingson 62 is also fantastic. How about a blind test of readily available 🇬🇾 rums, im thinking woods, lambs, skipper, watsons, ovd, etc
I wish more of these rums were available in the US, so I could try them. Of the ones I've tried, my favorite is Appleton. I tend to prefer pot still distilled rums.
Hi Steve, not long subscribed to your channel as wanting to dip my toes into the fascinating world of rum and enjoying the content your providing for this! Do you still have your discord channel? Can’t seem to find the link for it
Building my home cocktail bar and your channel has been the most educational for my rum choices! Right now my basket has Flor de Caña 4 and Chairman's Reserve White (fell in love with Daquiris recently) and Plantation OD. For a Gold rum I'm thinking of the locally made Luisita Oro rum which I read has no additives unlike the over-sweetened Don Papa. Any thoughts on what rums I might be missing for rum cocktails?
Steve, what are your thoughts on Havana Club’s Cuban Spiced rum? Is it on the level of Bacardi Spiced? Apparently they made it with pineapple and toasted coconut. It’d be interesting, but I am hesitant to purchase.
Yeah, those 3 are deffo leading the way. With Kit at Ninefold too. But for me Ninefold is more towards Neat. Where as these 3 in the video get the market and are very much amazing rums for mixing.
The thing that I don't think people really get is how much rum is sold as bulk spirits rather than distiller-branded product. Seralles only sells maybe 20-25 percent of their production under the Don Q brand. For Demerara, it's probably closer to 50-50 bulk rum vs. El Dorado and Diamond Reserve. Then you have producers like NRJ and WIRD who primarily serve the bulk market and sell rather little under their own brands.
If your figures are correct, I'm massively surpirsed by the DDL. I would've had El Dorado and Diamond at a less than 10% of DDLs Income. Just in the UK alone, and the Spiced Rum market, so many brands are Guyanese based Rum...(I can list 15 within seconds) and 2 of those brands absolutely dwarf what El Dorado sells here. On Top of that 2 Supermarket own brand White Rums are also Guyanese...again, probably selling way more than an ED Rum.You got other big DDL Rum Brands here including Pussers, Black Tot, Plantation OD & OFTD, Woods, Skipper, OVD...probably many others... but not forgetting Lambs! This is not a flex on Knowledge...but just sheer utter shock that DDL could be making 50% of their income from own brands. Based soley on UK, it has to be less than 10%. BUT of course, I have no idea of how much ED/DR is sold in the US. But it shows the average person how these Distilleries actually make thier money. For reference though... excluding Bozkov, Contessa, McDowells and Old Port, as I have no knowledge of them... I can pretty much summise (i think) that the other 6's sales are pretty much down to their own brands. So that in itself showcases an even bigger gulf between Bacardi say, and El Dorado or Foursquare.
@@StevetheBarmanRumReviews According to DDL's financial reports, which it turns out are available online, as of 2021 their revenue from sales of branded rum exceeded that of bulk rum. That said, if you measure by percentage of liters of alcohol produced, I wouldn't be surprised if bulk sales were a larger portion of that than branded sales.
Wow. Thats bonkers and just shows how Rum Markets can differ between countries. I know the US is a damn sight bigger than the UK, but I know the UK Spiced Rum dwarfs that of the US. (Capt Morgs aside). It’s circa 65-70% of all “Rum” sold here in UK. I do genuinely believe that it’s at the very least a 90/10 split here. As in 10% DDL own brands vs 90% DDL contract distilled for other brands…or E&A Scheer who produce the vast majority of Spiced Rum brands here. Genuinely really intrigued to see how much El Dorado is sold stateside now.
It just comes from practise. Lots of different Rums, it doesn't take long to train your palate. But its deffo not sweet anynmore. Far from it. the "Hot" will simply be because you're maybe not used to neat alcohol.
many Rum brands over the last 4-6 years have reblended their Rums with dramatically less Sugar. El Dorado is one of them. Thier ED12 and ED15 are now very different to 2018/2019

For me the Havana jumps out immediately.
As a frequent visitor of the Dominican Republic, the barcelo lines are fantastic, and I bring back enough stock to last until my next trip back.

Download the eBook. That'll help you with my very recent video on my main channel.
@@StevetheBarmanRumReviews Just ran through the eBook. Amazing work and I hope you get all the good karma for putting this out for free

Hoolie and Hurricane do seem to be one of the top UK brands

Where have you been? It has been 2 months.
I’ve always wondered what you do with all your pourings after a tasting. Do you put them back in the bottle or they go to an infinity bottle?

Are there any dark sipping rums that is not so hot to the taste?
It depends on your take on "Dark Rum". If you see my eBook, you'll understnad my stance. So probably not...
I just tasted El Dorado 15 year and I only got 2 notes, sweet and hot. How do you reviewers get all these different notes?
It just comes from practise. Lots of different Rums, it doesn't take long to train your palate. But its deffo not sweet anynmore. Far from it. the "Hot" will simply be because you're maybe not used to neat alcohol.

I don't get the different notes in rum, it is ether a bit sweet, and just a bit hot, only two dimensional to me.
All are joke rum, headache rum, why not try st Vincent and the grenadines strong rum.
