- Today’s video sees me chasing LMS ‘Black 5’ Class 4-6-0 44871 hauling RYTC’s “The Worcester Steam Express” from Norwich to Worcester via Peterborough, Leicester, Nuneaton and along the Camp Hill line around Birmingham to get to Droitwich. It was steam hauled throughout on the outward, with 44871 being taken off the train at Leicester Humberstone Road on the return. Originally scheduled to return via Old Hill, it was changed last minute to instead go via the Lickey and I treated this as the main show which it absolutely was!
I started out from my local at 10:03, heading to Droitwich where I met @JakeBSteam. The lower quadrant GWR signals are a beautiful sight and I wanted to include them in the video as they may be replaced in the coming years. 44871 slightly caught me out on the approach, making a bit of noise over the junction on the way to Worcester. I then took a train to Bromsgrove and cycled up to Vigo Bridge on the Lickey Incline, Britain's steepest sustained mainline gradient at 1 in 37.7! Here I met @blackcountrysteamvideos8021, @LiamsLocos, @GreatBritishRailways1, @Tobys_Trains, @James_Trains and @Sidmouth34010 among others during the wait. 44871 put on a spectacular show, climbing up from Bromsgrove to the summit at Blackwell with her powerful beat resounding around the hills, her black smoke drifting in the wind and with the diesel doing less than I thought it would! With that I headed home on a 323.
Thank you for all who made this possible, to 44871 and crew, to WCR, to my company for the day and to WMR for providing me travel. Thanks also to the drivers going up and down the Lickey who put up with our antics lol. I hope you enjoy this as I did!
Fantastic footage dan!!
Good to see you too mate yesterday! :)
Thank you very much mate and as always a great catchup! Roll on the next one mate. Regards, Dan

@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043I am too
I caught that tour myself twice at stoke works junction
And this is the first steam hauled tour of 2024 to ever come here
And my third time seeing 44871
Well done Scott, I hope you enjoyed it. Regards, Dan
@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043same to you
Dan, Nicely videoed at Droitwich and we were all treated to a great performance on the Lickey where we all met up. Regards, John
Thank you very much John and absolutely a treat at the Lickey! Great to have a catch up with everyone. Regards, Dan
I doubt as if the lower quadrant signals would ever be replaced. Some upper quadrant signals are still in use, and will be so for many years to come. What's not to love about Bobby the Black 5?
I've seen articles suggesting they may be replaced. There was even a project, which they have since dropped, to replace them by 2023. The Black 5 performed well. Regards, Dan
Great catch. Lucky you didn't get bowled as it would have probably made you chuffing mad. Nice whistles at 02:10
Thank you very much! Yes I was a little worried about bowlage, it seems to be that there is always a unit scheduled downhill at exactly the same time as a steam comes up but thankfully nothing came of it. And the whistles were lovely. Regards, Dan
Another great video from you Dan (bloke). Was good to spend some time with you at the lickey
Glad you enjoyed it mate, same with you! Hopefully this weekend will be a banger. Regards, Dan
Thank you very much mate! We absolutely do and even if i only saw you briefly it was good to say hello. Roll on the next one my man. Regards, Dan
Nice video it was nice to meet you today.
Thank you James, same to you mate! Regards, Dan
Great video as always Dan. Kind regards, Jake.
Thank you very much Jake, I'm glad you enjoyed it and good to spend the day with you too! Regards, Dan
Great video Dan she looked and sounded great especially on the Lickey.👍
Thank you very much Richard, she did sound good, even better than i'd expected lol. Regards, Dan
Good when that happensns .Take care Dan.
Good video Dan :)
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Dan
Shame about the angstdiesel doing most of the work instead of them coupling on a second steam loco...
The shedmaster at Bromsgrove sends his apologies for not having 58100 "Big Bertha" ready in time. 😩
@@juleshathaway3894 could have stuck any other member of the WCRC fleet on, like another Black Five...
@@richardharrold9736 Could have yes but that loco is Ian Riley's and not part of the WCR fleet. Smithy has just one air braked loco and that is Tangmere. It needs to be an airbraked loco for the current thorn in WCR and David Smith's side, the Central Door Locking mechanism. Also putting on another steam loco adds to the hire costs and therefore pushes up the ticket price. As someone posted either on this video or another, he couldn't hear very much in the air conditioned mkII coach. So having another steam loco on would look good for those on the lineside taking photos and video to watch here but would the onboard passengers be able to tell and enjoy it? And everyone knows that railtours are run for the benefit of linesiders!!
@@juleshathaway3894 what about the Jubilees? And why does it have to be air-braked, surely CDL is a purely electrical system? If WCR had just not tried to play silly buggers with the ORR, they wouldn't be in that position...
@@richardharrold9736 I’m not familiar with the CDL system and according to those who are it is an air operated system. There are electrical types of CDL but on these coaches I’m reliably told they are air operated. And you are absolutely spot on with your thoughts on WCR current situation, it is entirely of their own making, I have no sympathy for them at all. He knew at some point he would have to get them fitted and did nothing and now it’s biting him in the arse. I don’t think the Jubilees have air brakes which is why he’s using Ian Riley’s loco.
