What's The 2022 Yamaha R7 Like On The Road?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 июл 2024
- Motorcycle.com's Road Test Editor Troy Siahaan has ridden the new Yamaha R7 on the racetrack plenty of times, including at its new model intro at Atlanta Motorsports Park, and absolutely loves it as a track toy and learning tool. But we can't lose sight of the fact that this is a street-legal motorcycle after all, with lights, mirrors, and a license plate. Considering that most R7 owners are probably not going to take their bike to the track, we wondered what the bike is like to live with on the roads. For this Troy is joined by Managing Editor, and our hotshot offroad guy, Ryan Adams to find out.

Much , MUCH better on the street than the R6 and at a price I can afford. Thank you, Yamaha!! Love this bike.
I hate hearing people keep saying a learning ,platform it diminishes the over goal of this bike. This is not meant to be a stepping stone it is designed to be a complete package. For someone like me now in his 50's that has ridden liter sport bikes on the street and on the track this bike is perfect for both. 🤘😎🏍
It's definitely not as powerful as a 600 but you can use all of it's power on the street and definitely on the track, and it looks beautiful. It's supposed to be a bike you ride daily.
Reviews sport bike. Complains about the riding position.
the guy @04:06 would do a better review on the bike
That’s what you call a fail
What we came here for is the comfort of the R7 compared to other sportbikes. What we got is sportbikes aren't comfortable compared to other bikes... which we already knew.
I know like thanks for the brilliant contribution
Being a motorcycle rider and worrying about comfort is like being a swimmer and being worried about getting wet. No one's gonna do an Africa Twin world tour on this bike. It's perfectly fine and "comfortable" enough for what it is and who it is for. Bikes are freedom machines, if you want comfort, go drive an SUV
You sportbike riders have always cracked me up. You’re usually slower than the hyper-naked riders and way less comfortable doing it.
I'm 40+ and I'm the target crowd..I need a sport bike that I can daily and after work I can take it to the twisty on my way home. Its why I installed clip ons on my ninja650.
I like the sport bike riding position. you can grip the fuel tank with your legs which gives you way more control and you dont get the wind buffeting at 80mph the way you do with a “more comfortable” upright position. the r7 is exactly what I’ve been waiting for and I got one
the only thing better would have been a fully-faired v-twin from yamaha, suzuki or honda
Would you mind expanding your opinion on why v-twin would be better? Like, what are the benefits over cp2?
@@casanovatigo v twins are smoother and generally slimmer. My sv650s doesn't vibrate nearly as much as my ninja 250. The r7 doesn't have the width issue, very slim bike. Also doesn't rev very high so it probably doesn't vibrate much. It's a good power plant and I plan on buying a used one as a track bike when they come down in price to replace my 06 sv.
that single headlight carried over from mt07 gives this bike that Indian red dot on the forehead look lol
Mantap pak Troy!
Dam that Yamaha R7 ... sweet and easy for new riders who want to move from 390cc! loved the review 100%
New riders can't afford this bike. It's basically about $10,500 out the door...lmfao.
@@Wabbit1961 haha couldn’t agree more but over here it costs around almost $15,000
Interestingly, Yamaha wanted Race Track feeling with this Bike on the road but it looks like it's more for Road and Urban drive.
I like that you concluded with a negative summary of the bike. It shows you’re not afraid to dislike a machine and fear what the manufacturer will retaliate with.
it wasnt a negative aspect of the R7, it was a personal preference of an entire segment (sportbikes), has if that was a negative aspect for this specific bike.
its a bit overpriced and uncomfortable for what it is. compared to the ninja 650
@@joaomendes7989 8:16 that contradicts what you’re saying.
Maybe I saw a different video than you... He just said basically sport bike for the street is dumb. Completely different from saying the bike is bad...
The R7 is awesome!
I really hope R9 will be a comfortable bike. If so, Yamaha will have my money.
What R9?
XSR900, MT09, tracer9... Why would they make a pretend sport bike when they already have all those I said....
@@rudolphcarr like it or not.... the R9 will be at EICMA show 2021
@@thainaaier You must have a crystal ball haha. I googled it and I see they have recently trademarked the name in Europe in Australia. Maybe there is something to it, but i just found the reviewers flippant tone irritating.
yami jacked the ducati 999 front clip esp the polyelipsodial headlight haha and instead of the air vents theres the added slanted marker lights that mimic the same design i love it looks like a blue ducati 999 from that front view =P
NICE BIKE
Is that Glendora Ridge road by chance?
Little upset that two people reviewing the bike down even like sport bikes on the street…
My thought exactly, i bet their wives investigate the boom in the night... take your garbage review to Europe, an keep it on the track... over there.
Riding anything = Freedom
Yeah like what was the point ?
@@trophy_husband true, but relaxed comfortable freedom is better than cramped uncomfortable freedom.
I just bought the R7 and there’s a R9 coming sheesh
God I hope your opinion on the likely hood of an R9 are correct ! I will 💯 % buy one !
What is it about this kind of an R9 do you find appealing?
It’s almost the same as the MT09.
What is it that this kind of version makes appealing to you?
It’s not the power. It’s not the power to weight. It’s not the performance. The power output and comfort of the R9 will be on par with the 600cc supersports from other brands, but with an engine that is 50% larger and makes less power than those 600cc bikes. It will be equally uncomfortable for long rides. It will likely be less fun on a track. It will be uncomfortable for around town riding.
You said you’re into it. Why?
I'm looking forward to an R9 too. I love the motor in the MT09. For me, it's just the right mix of top end power and pull at mid to low rpms. I think it will be a more usable street sport bike than an inline-4 600cc sportbike, which makes terrible power on low revs compared to a parallel twin of the same displacement. On the track, sure, a 600cc I4 would make more sense than the future R9(if it ever becomes a reality) Now, literbikes, they just make torque then send you into warpspeed, period.
@@zero11010 The 600cc was always a boring class to use on the street, unless you are a street rossi @10000+ rpm all the time. You talk about power like all it meant is top speed, the MT09 has all the top speed you need for the street and much more torque then the R6. All they have to do with the R9 is fix the problems that the MT09 had when cornering
@@joaomendes7989 I’ve ridden an R6 on the streets for 10 years. I find it to be thrilling in the SF Bay Area. Lots of mountains and twisty coastal roads. Steep hills in SF that can literally function as ramps to let you jump a motorcycle and get both tires off the ground.
The whole area is a playground for people on two wheels. If I want to race a Ferrari at 140mph on a freeway I can. If I want to do picture perfect coastal roads twisting around with views of the ocean I have that. Sitting in traffic isn’t fun but lane splitting is legal here so that usually doesn’t last long and I’ve spent years commuting on the R6 into downtown SF.
I have no problem riding over 10k RPM and my car is a high revving Japanese engine as well. High in the RPM range is just where fun happens and that doesn’t seem like a negative.
600cc sport bikes are a tremendous amount of fun even when you’re not on a track.
Happy to admit that an 8 hour day of riding is pretty miserable on the thing. Yep. That’s true. Exceptionally long rides in that position are a terrible experience. Riding two up on it also sucks with the second person practically laying down on you as you come down hills and brake.
This R7 get those negatives. It doesn’t deliver on the positives.
And I’m 100% good with lower power machines. I see nothing wrong with a Grom for example. I would genuinely love to try a Versys as my next machine. Why would I take the same discomfort and give up power and fun? A new riding position and a bike designed for something totally different is a different experience and should be measured separately.
He made that up on the spot. Doubt it
It's Yamaha's 2021 version of Suzuki's 2005 SV650S. Except it's far better than the Suzuki ever was.
An R9 is coming? Oh my...I need to hold on to my R3 a little bit longer then until the R9 comes out.
Says who ?
I think the R9 will cannabilize the R7 in sales. Also, it will be around $11k-$12k. It would not make sense for Yamaha to have an R9 if they want to sell new bikes. The R6 didn't sell because it was $12k.
He’s talking out his ash they ain’t no R9
Not just the R7, maybe even more the R1
I would like a R9, but with another 80 horsepower or so available over a R9 it would be hard not to just step all the way up to the R1.
Always like the looks of the sporty bikes more than the naked bikes but not a fan of the riding forward body position. Can anyone recomend a sportier bike (not a track expensive focused bike) but a bike between 600-900 cc that you sit more upright more roadfocused. Thanks
How about the Honda CBR650R?
I have a z900 and before that I had a zx6r (never feel at home at the ZX) before I had an r3 and it was amazing, could be a r7 a good choice to substitute the Z900?!?
Depends on what you like and don’t like about the z900. R7 has about 30-40 fewer HP and a twin, vs the z900’s inline 4. From the sound of things the R7 has a more committed riding position, more in line with your zx6r, compared to the upright nature of the z900.
@@alexp6409 I loved the character of my R3, the geometry of the zx6r never felt like home to me, and I love the geometry of the r6, but then appeared the z900 with a good price and I went for it, I love it but I know that it has a lot of power that I don't use ...
@@PaulorhSilva if you didn't like the ergonomics of your ZX6R, then you'd probably hate the R7 too. have you tried the Ninja400?
@@KimmyR3 the problem was never the ergonomics, but the geometry of the zx6r. Not everyone goes well with zx6r... Right now I am ok with my z900 but I will see the r7 maybe for 2023 or 2024...
No way. Entirely different experience as to be no comparison.
Z900 or bust. You want more sporty ergos? Maybe upgrade to Z900SE, swap the bars for something aggressive and pop on a set of higher rearsets.
This bike is amazing on the twisty road with steep rake and short trail. All it needs is an ECU flash, exhaust, and airbox delete for power. Also, sintered brake pads and steel brake line would complete this bike.
Indeed that would be a sick build
Since R7 is here, can you guys please do middleweight sport bike shoot out??!! R7, CBR650R, Ninja 650, RS660, Daytona 765 and may be Ducati Supersport? I know you guys have separate videos of those rides but it would be great to see them in one great comparison video. Track comparison would be nice too.
By the way I think I know which bikes are going to take the top of tier. but it would be nice to have a comparison video since no other journalists or youtubers are currently making it.
is the Ducati Supersport updated? when was the last revision?

Yeah, we get it. You guys like to sit more upright.... get people who like sport bikes to review sport bikes in the future then. 💡
That would make too much sense for these dolts haha
So true, I agree with him but he shouldn't have made it such a big issue... Review the bike not its class... Would be as dumb if he started complaining naked bikes are bad because you get all the wind
Yeah these dudes are not on point and the 1 guy obviously old as hell
Yamaha could have all but locked up this market segment had they made the bike comfortable but alas the Ninja 650 is still the only comfortable middleweight faired bike. To me it seems like a really big missed opportunity. It's not like the 5% of the market who regularly do track days would have hated a bike that was comfortable on the street.
It just baffles me how yamaha tries to put one foot in the door and out the other - why claim to be more street friendly when your seating position is aggressive as FUCK?? Either you make a better version of the ninja 650 - or you keep the in-line four and recreate the original r7. You CAN'T try to do both. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
For the road, just get a naked. For the track, stick with the super sport. IMO, trying to combine the two way of riding into one bike will only leave the rider have LESS than what they *could* have had (more comfortable position /or/ more power)
I’m pretty sure this is trying to be a better road biased sport bike, not a commuter bike. The torque and weight makes it more fun on the twisties compared to long geared, high revving engines, but its not trying to be your next daily. I’m with Troy actually that i think an R9 is definitely coming. The current gap between the R7 and the R1 is too big.
Super sport is too much power. I have a 765 and I’m too ham fisted with it, not smooth. Need to trade for a R7
the name R series/line-up in the yamaha is for supersports/race and their fast category..yes we know theres the slow r15, r3, but anything above r6 is supposed to be a supersport.. not a damn "sport touring" which the r7 compares to the cbr650r, kawasaki ninja 650, etc.. theyre all sports touring
They shoulda named it the mr7 or mr07 or something. But i get it from their business stand point. It will sell for a begginers bike.
@@Jason.cbr1000rr Really... MR7/mr07?
Aprilia RS660 would disagree along with 90% of the reviews. It’s a sports bike with a more upright seating position. Super comfortable, super sporty. Best of both worlds
Very good exploration of just how this bike will most likely be used and the impact to the rider. For anyone older than about 25, it makes zero sense (generalizing here - I do realize there are older riders that may love the R7). Even at a significant cost difference I'd chose the Tuono 660 long before I ever purchased the R7. Yamaha should take the hint from Aprilia - they can't build them fast enough even though it costs 2-3K more than the R7.
I am closing in on 60 and I love mine. Great little bike, and very few riders are going to shake it (if even keep up with it) on twisty public roads if it is being ridden by a well-skilled rider. I will be on my 3rd R1 shortly, and while they are great on track, on public roads I find them pretty boing to ride and the comfort horrible.
Clearly the R7 is to i guess make life easier for those who wants to race in twins cup
I did a demo day on this bike. I actually like the firmness of the seat over the squishy seat on the MT. The frame is stiffer which is noticeable in both cornering and hitting the bumps. It's better put together.
I'm 6' tall. I could not get tucked in the bubble. My neck was strained into the Pez position. Not great. The engine seemed smoother.
The SV650X and the 660RS are more similar in body position - more comfortable and upright, yet plenty sporty and capable of longer ride times. I rode the R7 for half an hour. That was plenty.
IMO it doesn't compete with the 660RS. Just as people say the 660RS is in a class by itself, I think the same can be said for the R7. If Yamaha wanted to compete with the 660RS they would have built their version of a Ninja 650, which they actually should. Again, IMO.
The R7 is too pricey for the young market everyone seems to think they're aiming for - unless daddy buys it for them. $8,999 translates to $10,500 out the door. Better have a damn good trade-in. You ain't getting shit for your R3 or your CB500R!
My 2020 Ninja 650 KRT could use lower clip-ons and maybe drop the front 10mm. I'd bet that would be fantastic. But the front end needs better suspenders too.
Btw, low sales of this bike will tell you that there will be no R9. Why screw the pooch twice? I give the R7 2-3 years of attempted sales in the U.S. Maybe better luck overseas.
Its going like cupcakes though
Lmfao bro military members under 30 yrs old can afford this bike as it’s not that expensive. This bike looks legit and totally affordable
Guys! UFO in the background at 6.55.
So yamaha replaced the cramped, uncomfortable R6 with the cramped, uncomfortable SLOWER R7.. cool

I think it is perfect for the market it's designed for. It's a fully faired sport bike with a power band more accommodating to riding on the street. The other options, fully faired, are the somewhat boring Ninja 650 and the way overpriced RS660. With the R7, my ZX6R will get the track day transformation I've always planned. And as I tall rider, abnormally tall above the waist, I am still able to ride mostly tucked in behind the windshield and front fairing. On the sport bikes with the more upright ergonomics, the wind hits me around the shoulders and neck. And the wind noise is awful. And on the naked bikes I act like a parachute or sail, because I also have wide shoulders and a thin torso. This bike may not be for everybody. But it's perfect for me.
CBR650R Is certainly another option that deserves consideration. Idk if the RS660 is “way overpriced” but it was worth every penny to me :)
@@xJae14x I didn't include the CBR650R because it has the i4. It's more along the lines of the ZX6E from the early 2000s than the Ninja 650 of today. As far as the RS660, I don't think it's overpriced for what it offers, but instead for the market it's in. I know we are not talking Ford only offering a Mustang with so much tech it costs as much as a Corvette. But as far as the market and sustainability it's dangerously high priced. It is a better option in Europe since none of the i4 600s are Euro5 compliant. I think they need a lower tech/economy model. At least in the U.S. to be viable.
Hell yeah man! I bet you it’s way nicer than the zx6r. The quality and build of yamahas is awesome. Kawi needs to step up
@@xJae14x the rs660 is overpriced. the parts are hellishly expensive and hard to come by. also aprilia motors are not as reliable as yamahas.

It sounds like this R7 suffers from the same problem my 2003 SV650S had: uncomfortable ergos without the benefits of ridiculous amounts of power. In other words, perfectly fine on the race track, but not much fun on the street.
Well that’s cuz your old as helll
The R7 suspension is better than the SV650 though. Compared to an R6, R1, or GSXR750, the ergos aren't too bad. I think it is because the reach to the bars isn't that long. I haven't put my finger on it, but I can ride it for a couple of hours without too much trouble, whereas those other bikes made me pretty miserable.
If it were my money I’d spend the extra thousand dollars for a ZX6R
I would save 4 grand and get a Ninja 400, plenty of punch for the street.
Inline 4 for life
In LA you can get the ZX6R for the same price as the R7, at least as of a month or two ago when I was in the market.
Build quality is junk though
The newer ones 2013+
Not the old as ugly 2005 🤣 but hey i love all supersports bike.
I like the CP2 engine, it makes more torque than the outgoing R6 and it blows my mind how its maximum power comes 1500RPM sooner than the R6's max torque.
But the R6 redline is 16,500 🤤
Yea it's almost as if one is a race engine and one isn't
Still cannot understand why Yamaha made such an aggressive position for this bike.
It's just normal sport bike position... If you want confort you already have XSR MT TENERE TRACER versions why would they make one just pretending to be a sport bike...
Well, it IS an R-spec Yamaha, which means clip-ons and a committed riding position. I’m sure it’s a couch compared to the outgoing R6 though. Anyway, these two aren’t old enough to be crying about clip-ons. Yet.
Yeah but the riding position is uncomfortable with the bars so low and I’m too old and whiny to ride a sport bike on the street
looks like it's not too far from the R6 to be honest
da heck. Sportbike erogs should only be compared to other sportbike ergos if you going to talk about it at all. That's one on the reasons you even buy a sport bike is the racey looks. You should already know what you are signing up for as part of the sport bike experience.
No one is riding a R6 to its potential on the street, not for long anyway before they are arrested or total the bike. The R7 makes sense but Yamaha should have given it a little different tune so it made a little more power.
DO NOT BELIEVE THE HYPE! you're better off buying the R3 or ninja 400 for beginner or buy the zx6r outright OR wait for the R9.
No way. Rode the zx6r. That I do not like

So when Yamaha makes a parallel twin and one that only makes around 73hp at the crank it’s fun and peppy but when BMW makes a parallel twin with 30 more hp you have nothing good to say about it other than the brakes and TFT are really good.
I thought politicians were bad. I guess honesty and integrity aren’t important to many moto journalist either. Sad really😔
So it’s not as comfortable as a more upright riding position. It’s also not as comfortable as the couch, so maybe comfort is not the point. I think Yamaha got it right, after all they do offer the more “comfortable” iterations. It seems kind of disingenuous to review a bike by complaining about what it isn’t. We all know that this thing isn’t a Gold Wing. BTW I’m 66 and my 01 Aprilia RSV-R still puts a smile on my face every time I ride it. Even with the clipons below the triple clamp. You keep talking about how amazing it is that you’re able to ride it on the road and on the track.
* Ability to ride it on the road is an absurdly low bar. And you both constantly lamented how uncomfortable the bike is. “Terrible street bike for a guy like me.”
* Ability to ride the bike on track. This feels like a low bar because when you ride the MT07 you mention it would work on track. This is the case for almost anything else you guys hop on, right? You guys often talk about how a thing is feasible for limited or light track use (which I feel fits with a 70hp 700cc machine lacking all of the riding aids that modern race focused bikes get).

i dont get the people who want an r9. it 3 cylinder motor with the same horse power as the r6. it will basically just replace the r6 with a cylinder less and more torque but in no way a revolutionary bike.
The more torque on a race bike is a good enough reason.
