I actually played a lot of duel accelerator back in the day.
One main thing was duels didn't cost money anymore, so you could actually play as much as you wanted, and another thing was that you could actually somewhat host your own tournaments (it required DP to do, so I never did as I spent 1 single pound on it).
You could also lend people cards and decks, which was incredibly common for in-game guilds and the like where you'd lend people good decks to grind the single player which was otherwise incredibly hard. Your starting deck had a stat cap of 1500 attack, or 1800 with a drawback (dark zebra). And even the easiest ai opponent (Jaden) would have access to staples like mirror force and vanillas like Sparkman and clayman.
I also recall when you went in on a theme deck you could actually pick which one you got, because I remember choosing skill drain instead of dark world.
It was interesting for sure, I played right up until the final day.
What was also very funny was that the game sort of had its own meta, due to best of one being popular and a huge amount of the pkayerbase not being that good, certain cards were hilariously overvalued.
Red-eyes wyvern and doomkalibur knight would go for around 4 Whole Duel Passes. As would stardust dragon, though hilariously you couldn't ask for it in the global server. The game had a lot of strict detections for slurs and the like, and "tard" was one of them, so asking for a stardust would net you a mute and have the word starred out.
I still recall people calling: "Will trade DOOM for SDD + DP"

Yes, Doomkalibur Knight was vastly overhyped in this game. I remember people asking for it all the time on the global chat.
And, btw, this is a feature not seen in today’s Yu-Gi-Oh! games: the possibility to trade cards with others. Probably due to Konami’s and other companies’ policy to reduce internet scams and to not allow hate speech or something that could lead to one person harming another, idk.

Bro. So many memories unlocked. I played from start to finish i bought the pc download. Came with 3 cards gaia the fierce knight was one. N entering the code for the card gave you like 30 duelpasses. Haha duel acceleration was so cool but nobody took yugioh seriously at that time. Duel network got taken down by konami n they just stopped doing yugioh online. Its like they wanted to kill yugioh. People acted like they didnt even know wat yugioh was before masterduel

I played YGO Online 3 Duel Accelerator for a while when it was close to shutting down. What drew me in was the avatar customization, believe it or not.
Back then I was obsessed with Tag Force Evolution/Beginning of Destiny on the PS2 and that game had a fixed avatar (good old redhat, the biggest chad in yugioh gaming history). But what I wanted was to create my own character to pretend that I was actually in that world.
Anyway, I ended up giving up on Online eventually since my dad wouldn't let me spend enough money in it so I could have an actual decent deck and the cool customization items.
Next year I got a DS and started getting into Spirit Caller and the 5ds WC games, which scratched my itch for customization and roleplaying alongside some nice TCG simulation. Still, now that I'm an adult and can actually spend my money however I want, I wish Online was still around so I could try to play it properly.
Master Duel is great for simulation but that's all it is, there are no RPG elements, no character customization and you can't duel the anime characters in it. Duel Links has more of that aspect but that's not TCG simulation, it's an entirely different type of game.
A game with something like Online 3's character customization, a nice fleshed out single player experience like the 5ds WCS games, simulation gameplay like Master Duel, and no pay to win, would probably be my dream yugioh game, but I've no faith in konami ever doing it.

I was a master player of the game. Played twice over the years at school. I remember the old times when there were still USB passes where they gave you a unique card. At the time, the game currency for trading is the doomcaliber knight card. I really had a good time back then.

  • @raymon-3712

I played it a lot as a kid lol xd. Once a month or something my mom would either buy one or two battle passes at the toy store. And I would burn through my duel points over the weekend :P(This was in the Netherlands at the Intertoys, where you could buy a gift card-ish 30 duel points card. Each battle card had a monster on the front. I remember I had one with Gaia the Fierce Knight. And when you redeemed the card you also got the card on the front in-game. This was during classic Yu-Gi-Oh! Online (The first one) I still remember trading people a whole lot to assemble a magician themed deck. Good memories. I still remember chatting and trading with regulars during the evenings I was allowed on the computer. Even when I was out of duel points. I also would just look through my cards and stuff.

I'm suuuuper late with this but I figured I'd add some additional info cause I spent ages on this game:
Yugioh Online 2 went up to LODT, and then basically sat with the same cardpool for years because they had to remake it into Yugioh Online 3 for the addition of Synchro monsters. That last year or so was a mess where the main currency used to conduct trades (Doomcaliber Knight) was given out as prizing at events, when usually it was bought in the shop for a set fee (hence it's stability).
There were 3 types of weekly-ish events that ran for a few hours at a time throughout the weekend. I distinctly remember Gunslinger (which was I think Best of Ones where you received better prizing for winstreaks, and for some reason was the only place you could open some of the older packs without using premium currency once you hit certain winstreaks); Evolution (Best of 3 win x number of games for certain prizings) and I think Trial which was the same as Evolution but Bo1. There was a very active clan/team scene with ironmans & tournaments with actual prizing (usually DP or rare in game cards). There were additional prizes given out based on how much you played during a season in those events, and that led to some people sinking ungodly amounts of DP in just to play in them, to effectively be given a few wildcards to pick from the cardpool.
It did follow OCG card pool largely but had it's own banlist and meta due to delays in content release.
There were seasonal "World Championships" where you had to go to their website and say what times you were available to play and they would give you a slot for it. That was Best of 3 and knockout. You could go back and watch any of the games at any point, as I vividly remember someone sharing on one of the various third party forums at the time a replay of someone winning because he attacked with Ryko into something and dropped triple Honest.
The game was however extremely predatory with the Pay to Play model of 1 and 2; which did switch to a Freemium model in 3. You had to have bought DP (which was used for packs rather than gameplay) at least once in the season to be able to enter any of the events.

IMO, the thing YuGiOh online did that was missing in the games that are currently played is the avatar creation. The reason is the fact that the avatar had animations when drawing cards, summoning monsters, taking damage and those were customizable as well when the 5Ds version came out. If that was implemented in Master Duel, I'd never switch off my game.

i remember playing YGO online back in the GX-5D's Era and got a few wins along with making some great decks, wonder if there are any fan-run dedicated servers out there for this old fossil of a gem of a game? Still, I sure had some great memories playing this after school in my high school days alongside other online games like "WOW", "Digimon online", "SD Gundam Capsule Fighter", "B.O.T.S.", and countless matches in "Battlefield 2" among many EXP grinding sessions in "Adventure quest", "dragon fable", "warp force" and "Mech quest". So many memories spent online with making so many friends i couldn't even find today even if i had the Millennium Ring, thanks for sharing and cya next time!

Ill never forget getting last turn otk'd my very first duel lmao. The community, as drama heavy as they were. Were the most endearing aspect of the game. I thought master duel would pick up the torch where ygo 3 left off. And i was livid when i saw it was just ygo 1/hearthstone with better graphics. Master duel doesnt have nearly the same level of community and social aspects as the online series did. And its truly a shame.

Ahh memories... Yeah, anyone I've met who played Yugioh, didn't know what I was talking about when I brought this game up. I myself, being a broke middle schooler, would just make a bunch of level one accounts to get a few free duels that you would start off with. I only played for a short time during the 'Duel Evolution' era.
While I had no money to pay for anything anyway, I remember thinking the actual business model of the game was lunacy, although I forgot how it actually worked until watching this. But I do know for sure that is what I thought of it, and my feelings have not changed. It's too bad because the game was actually really fun. I always assumed it god awful business model was the cause of it shutting down.

Yu-Gi-Oh Online was fucking awesome, I don't care what you say (and how right you are) xD Loved going after school with my mate to the local store to buy a card (it was something like a scratch card or credit card don't remember. It basically gave you a code that you entered and it gave you credits, some kind of resource and some cards. I remember hillariously talking with the store guy and outright refusing to buy real cards and packs because we didn't want to try and learn which packs we needed now, then research where and how should we find local tournamentas, we were very awkward and didn't feel like we wanna go to a group of unknown people to play YuGiOh and lastly...it was kind scrutinised being so nerdy back then and considering I was also second captain of our football, volleyball and basketball teams at school I just couldn't risk being seen as a nerd and not some cool guy (which I totally wasn't...I was just a funny, nerdy guy that also loved and was decent at sports and was friends with the super nerdy guy - and people somehow still couldn't figure out why I'm friends with him). So playing annonymously online seemed perfect. We were young and dumb to realize how stupid it was to spend so much money on that game instead on actual, physical cards and actually getting to know our small but live community for the actual physcial game at the time.
I still blame those years for the fact I'm not going to local torunaments now, or know the guys that are keeping the scene alive and lastly that I have no idea where my childhood decks are since I haven't used them since... primary school. All are things I view as negative.
But man, nothing beats the rush entering the code, getting the cards, playing online. Building the dekcs. Dueling each other and then talk all about it next day after school. Those were the days! Nothing beats making an avatar and exploring domino city. I love Master Duel but it's so much worse in every aspect bar monetization and events. I can't believe how much better old school Yu-Gi-Oh games used to be. Better animations, customization options...gaming experience overall. So yeah, I miss Yu-Gi-Oh Online.

Duel Evolution was the best yu gi oh online game to date due to its MMO infrastructure. The game had trading, had npcs give you a card after every 30 wins until you get to 100 or 200 wins. The card power progressed as your wins got higher and finally they gave you a unique avatar cosmetic. IT WAS AMAZING! YGO online 3 was a failure, removing the MMO aspect.

why konami doesnt revive yugioh online 1 and put it on steam or something ? there are a lot of people who doesnt like the new ways of dueling and will definitely have an interest in the old ways of duels

konami took all our cards and money away and now they wanna sell us it again in master duel,
but somehow no one care about it.
the ygo online ganes had good musics.
i liked chill at duel academy and see other player
in ygo online 3 u could make our own torunaments
    also master duel is horrible

Yeah I did like, 2 duels, felt the game was WAY too over-monitized, and just bailed. I was playing the first PC offerings back then that were single player so I had enough of my fix, ontop of the GBA games, so I had plenty of YGO content, and had local players to play the TCG with. But I could see where the market was for it, just wasn't my cup of tea.

I am enjoying your Yu Gi Oh videos but..... less so your economic takes.
Subscriptions for MMOs are predatory? You know they have an active staff that needs to be persistently paid right? The subscription model is the *least* predatory way of accomplishing this, being entirely upfront about the cost and benefits, and not incentivizing manipulating the design of the game to encourage microtransaction purchases.
