I recently moved away from my family to go to college and was extremely homesick. I binged your retrospective series and felt a little better because these games reminded me of home. Thank you
I respected the decision to up the difficulty of the DM formula from Sacred Cards, as that game was admittedly braindead. But there is such a thing as going too far the other direction. I'm willing to bet only like a dozen people ever saw the ending without using cheats or the "actually tolerable now" ROM hack, and even half of those still relied on cheating out Ra Battle mode by discarding Ra Phoenix mode from the hand.
I miss Power of Chaos games, the use of the voice actors was a great decision. I didn't even spoke English at the time or had watched it in English, but dueling kaiba's ego it's so fun I wish they could more of entries with other voice actors, even secondary characters. Also the game be localized in as many places as possible, always fun to listen to the original, to the dub from your country and some times even from other countries, I'm from Brazil and thanks to abridged series I also enjoy the english dub
I still wonder why Power of Chaos launched everywhere except japan and never had any specific follow up. I get that the dub of DM was a major hit compared to everything else, but it still feels kinda odd.
From what I could see on this channel and info I read about it online, this game has "unofficial fanfiction romhack" written all over it. It has the full set of incredibly obscure references that mesh questionably with current lore(The Millenium Guardians were appearently a thing in the manga), rules that are stacked against the player until they are cheesed(And are even broken with the player character being the only one to care about the banlist), weird story with random pacing(That it starts with Ishizu just hiding behind a plant for example. Like, was she just randomly spying on people?) and random people showing up with weird roles.(Like, what is PaniK doing here? Why is Keith an actual big-time villain? Why is Weevil a potential ally?) Also, appearently the "Cheval" in Chevalsky translates to "Horse", so er..."skyhorse"..."Pegasus". Nice.
Watched almost every retrospective video released so far, and just HAD to say a huge kudos for this series so far, you manage to articulate the appeal of each individual game so well!
Playing this game vanilla is a truly painful experience that no one should endure 😂 However, when you download the patch for the game that fixes its issues, it suddenly becomes my most enjoyed YuGiOh game.
I don't disagree with your gameplay issues at all (never beat it as a kid because of the bs) but man, Reshef still means a whole lot to me anyway. Especially as a big fan of the original manga, which this includes a lot of little love letters to. (for example: Hanasaki returns!! after being unceremoniously dropped in the story!!! such an obscure little detail, I love that!!!! it's all to the point that I want to headcanon it's plot somehow, but you really can't lol). Anyway, you can tell it's made by people who were passionate about the Yu-Gi-Oh universe as a world, it's got this spark to it because of that. The writing isn't anything special mind you, but there's something about feeling like a part of it that nothing after this captures in the same way. Looking forward to the future reviews on it all anyway though, I'm still quite fond of a lot of it anyway. By the way, for those who want to play Reshef without breaking any electronics: ReshefIsActuallyTolerableNow is a fan patch that addresses the difficulty. Much much better experience.
Also yes, glad the retrospectives are continuing, I discovered them only recently and I wasn't sure whether Reshef killed em haha. High quality stuff, keep it up!
Many people seem to be fond of this game despite all the nonsense (including myself). I've actually been reverse engineering it for a couple of years now and have found many neat things about the game, including some unused stuff. Eventually I plan to make a rom hack with Season 4's story (Waking the Dragons), that follows the Reshef and Sacred Cards format with some improvements.
That would be really cool! Best of luck with that. I'd love to see romhacks like that using this format, yugioh fangames that aren't just the duel sims would be the dream
@@JustJoqu Thanks! Yeah, I think the engine has so much potential to be a base for some very cool mods. As for the unused stuff and other trivia, I plan on making a video about them very soon. I've only mentioned them on my discord, but haven't really talked about them in depth anywhere else.
Wow, it's been years since I last played AND BEAT Reshef. Though, to be fair, I had to cheese the game somewhat to win, relying on lots of healing cards, cards that summon other monsters when sent to the graveyard and cards that generate other monsters when their effect is triggered to get the tributes for the Egyptian God cards. Certain spells and traps were hellishly powerful and it seemed like any semi-competent enemy in the game and their grandma used them constantly, thus generating a reliance on the God cards as they were immune to those nightmares.
I was given this game for Christmas as a kid. I wasn't able to finish it until 2015 when I figured out the Ra glitch and the strategy to beat the shadow duellists in China. I would love more games like this one day but we know Konami would never do that.
Like others, I thought you left this series. Super glad you're doing well! Great video, I only played the previous game in the series and it was interesting learning about the sequel to it! When I found your channel two weeks ago, it got me interested in replaying and actually beating Capsule Monster Coliseum for the first time since I've had it when I was a kid. It was a fun experience as an adult Pegasus's age and I'm looking forward to your perspective of it in the future!
The farthest I got with this game was at the great wall with the five guardian/keeper dudes. I had to use a cheating device to see the rest of the game. With a game like this, it's not so much a matter of whether or not I can "git gud" and more a matter of whether or not I have the patience for it. It literally takes hours to grind so you can use halfway decent cards. And it just doesn't feel worth it.
6:53 Its actually crazy how they were never able to properly balance the difficulty of these games. Its like the devs took the assertations that Sacred Cards was too easy and decided to say "Aight fuck you then, we're only gonna be giving you 1-3 DC and like 200$ after a victory now" The Final FUCKING Boss only gives like 5 DC and 2500$. A boss, which mind you, can be difficult to beat even if you are cheating by the way.
I think I might be your 500th subscriber but it’s hard to tell, glad your YGO game retrospective is going well! I highly enjoyed this video and I’m looking forward to more. I’m also in the process of writing and working on a YGO video games retrospective in a slightly different format on my main channel (Starcrossed Souls) and I will definitely give this series a shoutout when I do!
What bothered me the most with this game was the elemental mechanic. Having a very power card that was killed because it didn't have the right type match up was super frustrating in this game. Luckily I was able to beat it, but you had to get lucky with good card pulls.
First game where you can play the 3 gods cards who have god's effect ! That's why this game is the best ! And the game isn't that hard when you know how to abuse the AI and play a dark-monster theme deck.
Funny how this game feels like it steals its story from The Orichalcos Filler Saga. An individual who is possessed by an Ancient Evil to drain the God Cards of their Power to regain its strength. We then go to the villains Castle to defeat them and watch the villain become one with the Ancient Evil (Dartz gets a happy ending but Pegasus gets a sealed for eternity ending) The Swap outs from the Filler and this being the following: - Swap out The Legendary Dragons with The Millennium Items - Swap out Dartz Bois with Pesasus’s Minions - Swap out the spawned Monsters with The Ghouls Imagine if this game was the Filler Arc instead of Reshef? Imagine Duelist using The Seal of Orichalcos? Imagine fighting Raphael after watching Yugi fall? Have Kaiba and The Pharoah get defeated and have you be The Final Soul that The Great Leviathan needs to Fully Awaken? Face the Infinity Power Snake while your opponent has 20,000LP? Oh wait that kinda happens except it’s 40,000 and your opponent has The God Cards.
Honestly, I feel like this game may have had a better shot if it went the Duel Monsters 4-approach of choosing the playable character between Yugi, Kaiba and Joey. The big thing that made Season 4 special was how Yugi was missing for like half of it and this game reverses this by Yami being missing for the majority. Just that it doesn't feel as cool when he is the sidekick in a weird RPG-party where some rando has to do most the work.
I loved this game. Flavor wise it was a 10/10. Certainly couldn’t beat it as a kid and had to return to it much later to beat it. The field check with Osiris was excruciatingly irritating however.
I remember i got a glitched version of this game where everything went black in the background and i had every card unlocked but only certain characters were available to duel and the story was unprogressable
How I managed to beat this game as a kid I have no fucking idea 😂 I clearly had too much time on my hands back then! Nowadays I just use cheats to breeze my way through the game cause SCREW THIS BS!
Great video very thorough. Actually its the 1st video of urs ive seen. I too suffered with reshef of destruction. I actually cheated and even with 999 dp i couldnt get passed marik or odion. I commend you for your sacrifice.
Yea you should tbh !! It’s really fun and feels extremely relieving when you beat it too . @@SlumpKingBih I ended up playing the Easy Patch made by Ephraim226 and I had a good amount of fun. Still pretty hard but not nearly as aggravating as the vanilla Reshef experience.
