Lego is an expensive hobby. It all really depends on the size and amount of pieces that comes with the set. And I think the brand also factor in the price. Below 1k pieces are usually the cheaper products, more reasonable price as you put it (like the piranha plant). Between 1k-2k are in the highs. 2k+ are usually where it can get really expensive.
Also, I worked at Toys R Us for 5 years and there were MANY sets that were north of $300.00. The Star Wars sets (at least the bigger ones) were really pricey. So honestly finally getting a Zelda set available, I was willing to shell out the money.
I bought the Zelda one... I don't normally buy Lego so I could justify it. I'm in Canada so it came to $440.69 CAD after tax. I might look at getting the Mario/Yoshi one.
