Got the UCS star destroyer for 40% off for just over $300. The employees and other shoppers literally clapped and cheered as we walked out with it. Never will I ever get a better Lego deal than that 😅
Yeah respect his opinion, but for me I see it as each figure choice can add a certain amount. Make up some point system say an imperial officer can give up to #/6 points and it was perfect so +6 points. But Rex is still Rex so even though a it's not perfect #/16 points it's +10 points. Very subjective but I would somewhat rather have Rex figure but for their proper set having a nice imperial officer is really nice too difficult to say

My big problem with UCS Imperial SD is fact it has blank one colour. In my opinion adding darker gray details on Trench section would improve its look and catch eye much more. Old version did better job at that.
Thanks for the extra footage - Venator for me. ISD is menacing and impressive for sure, but I appreciate the color and more dynamic shape of the venator. If I can only have one large ship, I want more than a grey blob. I also got the venator b/c it’s easier to display, and has stand options to sit angled 45 degrees.
I want 1:160 to become a more widespread scale. It would allow for characters to be represented as 3x stacked studs and be proportionate. Also it would allow someone to go all out and build a 33ft long by 9ft tall Imperial Star Destroyer in their garage.
To be fair, when they chose the colors for the Venator, they did go with the Resolute, which, while it may not be the most iconic Venator, does belong to, arguably, the most iconic Jedi, and inarguably the most iconic Clone Legion, being Anakin Skywalker and the 501st
Different appeal, tbh. Have both and I think Ryan describes it in the best way possible. The Venator is sleeker, more stable, and frankly has the more interesting colors and design, but there’s just something about the ISD’s presence that is undeniable. With the ISD you really can just feel the scale and size of it that not even something like the UCS Falcon can match.

I purchased the Star Destroyer last week. Have both now. I like the building process of the Star Destroyer, but comparing side to side the Venator wins on almost every dimension. The fact it is much stronger and a lot smoother does the job. Downside of the Venator are the stickers. Not because there are stickers, but they lack quality. Best minifigs of the 4 in the 2 sets is the imperial crew member. Maybe not the most obvious choice, but the printings on it are just wow.
There is a venator mod online where you can make the red bay doors retractable and there is a ship hangar inside. With that upgrade, the venator would be superior to SD. But I agree it’s a tough competition because the SD is a more iconic and interesting design. The bridge looks better. The underside with the shield generator and hangars look very good, while the venator doesn’t really have anything on its underside.
A lot of people might not agree with me on this one, but personally, I think single colored Lego sets just look awful, the red on the Venator just makes it pop out so much more. I could buy a star destroyer shaped block of concrete and put that in my display room, and it almost wouldn’t make a difference. They could at least added some different tones of grey, and I know that isn’t how it looks in the movies, but plain grey is just so boring, and to me definitely not worth 850$.

Fully agree about the ISD being more imposing. When I built the Venator I placed it between the ISD and UCS executor, and it kind of bummed me out. It inspired me to rearrange my entire room.
They're both great sets and they're both overpriced. I own the ISD and have yet to buy the Venator. I do intend to do it soon, and I also intend to mod it into the all-grey Imperial livery we see at the end of Revenge of the Sith. But I would always pick the ISD as the better set. For two reasons: it's a set from the Original Trilogy, and it's a much more iconic ship. 'cause even among the Prequels I'd argue the Venator isn't a truly iconic ship from those films. That honour belongs to the likes of the Naboo Royal Starship or the Trade Federation Lucrehulk battleship.
I own the ISD, but it is in my "pile of shame" unopened. All your video did was convince me further I just needed to get both. Two of my favorite ships from Star Wars. I love the red color on the Venator bridge as I think it provides a better contrast from the all-grey ISD. So on its own it might feel off, if displaying them together I think the extra red is a nice extra touch.

I’m all for holding companies to higher standards but I would pick that Rex figure every day. Why bash it? Because of helmet holes? No waist cape? Over sized print and pauldron? Nah, I wish he had a waist cape but honestly everything else in my opinion is just nitpicking.
as someone who could never fully commit to buying the star destroyer due to the price and the idea that theyll probably make a better one with a smaller gap in the future, i really really really really REALLY want a midi scale star destroyer. by far my most desired set. and not the one that already came out years ago that one doesnt look too great. the new midi scale sets have such good quality for their size and a well designed ISD would make me so happy
I’m just hoping this one’s a lot easier for me to build. The LEGO imperial star destroyer was a pain in the neck. I had to order another one since Some of it fell apart, and the pieces broke. Amazon sent me a new one completely free so the challenging part was to find the bags that I needed and the instructions manual to begin
Couldn't get the ISD when it was on shelves but I did get the Venator. Looking at that stand alone, I'm glad I have the more stable Venator but now I'm hoping they bring out a new ISD in years to come with a revised stand. I think that would be the best of both worlds for me

I haven’t gotten the Venator yet, but I do have the UCS Star Destroyer. Just saying that the UCS Star Destroyer does have engine sag on the outer engines. The central engine doesn’t seem to have that issue. Regarding the gaps the Venator appears does a better job minimising them, the Star Destroyer has gaps on the sides and stern where you can see into the structure which I added parts to cover up (on the rear or stern the panel gaps are to do with the plates sagging). Also adding, If Lego gave us the option to have an ISD 1 or 2 or a flagship Venator or normal Venator it would add display flexibility as we can change this up and maintain the display ability. And lastly minifigures, in episode 4 and rogue one the Star Destroyer is only prominent because of Darth Vader, without Darth Vader it’s just another ISD, Lego could have mostly remedied this with a Darth Vader Mini Figure or by calling the imperial officer Grand Moff Tarkington or Admiral Piett. Where as Venator has named characters.
Maybe an unpopular opinion… For me the UCS Venator is the only UCS set I wasn’t going gaga for. Probably because I already had gotten the Star Destroyer. The Venator looks great but I really like how threatening the SD looks, and it’s more iconic for people who come to the house and see the collection. Maybe if I had a bigger space I’d make room for the Venator but it doesn’t really hold any special places for me. Good comparison.
I wish they used some more tones of grey on the Star destroyer. It’s imposing, sure but with it being just a monsterous blob of grey, it’s about as eye catching as a boulder. Like you’ll notice it cuz it’s big but there’s nothing about it that really pops

Red bridge venators is the way of visually know what is the venator of a Jedi comander. The rest of the fleet has the grey bridge.

And lastly minifigures, in episode 4 and rogue one the Star Destroyer is only prominent because of Darth Vader, without Darth Vader it’s just another ISD, Lego could have mostly remedied this with a Darth Vader Mini Figure or by calling the imperial officer Grand Moff Tarkington or Admiral Piett. Where as Venator has named characters.
Maybe an unpopular opinion… For me the UCS Venator is the only UCS set I wasn’t going gaga for. Probably because I already had gotten the Star Destroyer. The Venator looks great but I really like how threatening the SD looks, and it’s more iconic for people who come to the house and see the collection. Maybe if I had a bigger space I’d make room for the Venator but it doesn’t really hold any special places for me. Good comparison.
I think both look great. I couldn’t choose one over the other.

I wish they used some more tones of grey on the Star destroyer. It’s imposing, sure but with it being just a monsterous blob of grey, it’s about as eye catching as a boulder. Like you’ll notice it cuz it’s big but there’s nothing about it that really pops
the "exclusive" minifigs on the venator are ok at best
