Jan Molby was a brilliant player. Totally underrated. Made the game look so simple (It is....) His finest hour the 1986 FA Cup Final (first hearing here of the goal v Man Utd). That meg pass to get the ball through to Ian Rush for the first goal - totally deliberate. Thanks for posting this footage.
Very Good Player, reads the game so well, seems to make space and time for himself. definitely a big match player FA Cup final 3-1 against Everton. Jan Molby was instrumental in all 3 Liverpool goals. Also has the very uncanny ability of letting the Ball do the work, probably a good thing as he not one the fittest players to ever don a red shirt. A great talent and it was joy to watch him.
Great player, as a Manchester United fan in the late 80s/early 90s when he wasn't always in the Liverpool first XI I'd have loved to have seen him prised away to Old Trafford! I agree with the chap in the footage who says he was a better player than gazza as well.
Jan Molby a true legend. A very gifted and elegant player and very important to the Reds in the 80's. His only problem was that he didn't quite make it on the Danish National Team in the 80's. Only because of the unlucky coincidence that he was on the top at the same time as Michael Laudrup - the king of Danish football and ruler of the Barcelona and Real Madrid great teams.
I agree, Laudrup is the best player I have ever seen who could make space even with 2 or 3 players on him and then he had the brilliant end product with the devastating through balls. my favorite player of all time.
Molby chose not to play for his country anymore in late 80's. Can't remember his reason, the Laudrup brothers made same decision altho Brian did play for Denmark after a few years, Molby and M Laudrup never did come 9ut of international retirement. Jeez, I think Michael was 21 when he quit international football. He (Michael Laudrup) very nearly became a Liverpool player in mid eighties-- we almost had the greatest Danish footballer ever alongside the second greatest Danish footballer ever, Molby.
Wow, I never heard that before six years ago. If that was true, then it shows how low Liverpool had sunk at that stage with the ability of players they were getting in the early 2010s. I started going to watch Liverpool when Dalglish assembled that incredible squad in the late 1980s. I loved watching Molby play.
"if he would have gone abroad..." GONE abroad? he CAME from abroad, from my club, AJAX. I have seen Jan playing with Ajax, young and talented. Jan Mulder, former Anderlecht and Ajax striker, has once written a brilliant column on Jan, Jan the Milkman. King of the Center Circle
Molby never went Past Player?! :O Have you ever Watched that Goal against Man Utd in 85? He went past three players from the middle of the Park. Absolute Nonsense. If Gazza was so Great how come he never Won the Title with Spurs? It takes more to be a footballer then just Individual Skills. Dwarfs any midfielder ever had? hahaha loool Ian Callaghan Peter Thompson Billy Liddell all as skillfull or more then Gazza. Right Now we have Coutinho and he has the Intelligence Gazza would only Dream of..
@SLAPFACE247 an player called called Molby from denmark was really good. an good player needs skill.a exceptional player molby. An player with an lot of great technique . an player with an great scous accent . :-)
he had 3 pens saved in his Liverpool career - two in 85/86 (Sheffield Wednesday in the league and QPR in the league cup) and one in 89/90 (Chelsea). I was in the Kop watching that pen against Auxerre!
jan molby was amazing because the game was at his pace, only other player springs to mind for me is lettisier, not sayin he was as good but def a simialr player to our Jan :)))))))))))
@southsea1984 i was in the kop too mate. probably jumped all over ye when mark "the wizard" walters slotted the 3rd home. remember nobody gave us a chance after the 1st leg and we had a crowd of under 20,000 but everybody there got right behind the boys, even the kemlyn were singing! one of the loudest, most memorable experience on the kop, n there were a few!!! spirit of shankly YNWA red for life!!!!
def true comparing Molby and Barnes with Gazza is like Comparing Messi and Xavi with Robben. Do you have any doubt whos better? Robben like Gazza a very gifted player with Terrific Potential but has Problems with his ego or health while players like messi xavi barnes and molby are out of this world
Jan Molby scored 42 penalties out of 45 taken His 3 missed penalties were against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in December 1989 (Dave Beasant). Against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield in January 1986 (Martin Hodge). Also against QPR at Anfield in the 1986 in the semi finals of the Milk Cup (Paul Barron)
really? id say Maradona in his prime was a better player then Barnes but have you seen Barnes play? Have you seen Molby play? thats right you havent you know why? bec Liverpool were not playing in Europe it was as simple as that. The Biggest Tragedy when it comes to Barnes is that he didnt play much for England in 86. If he had it would have been a diff story. He came on the latter stages against Argentina and beat a couple of players to set up the goal for lineker. He should have played more
.....re Barnes....v Argentina 1986 - after the LIneker goal - he put in another great cross for Lineker....I still don't know how Olarticoechea managed to head the ball away from where he was....and btw he did head it......if that goal went in and England then win the game, history changes...I reckon they would have won that World Cup - they had some team.....
the only player today who is better then Molby and Barnes is Messi. Sure they were not Maradona but who is besides maybe Messi. One things for sure though Maradona wasnt twice the player Barnes or Molby was.
The hyperbole of Tony Barrett is ridiculous. Even if you thought that Molby was ahead of Gazza, to say he's "quite some way ahead" is pure bias. Oh and your houses are crap as well.
Jan Molby was a brilliant player. Totally underrated. Made the game look so simple (It is....) His finest hour the 1986 FA Cup Final (first hearing here of the goal v Man Utd). That goal he scored against Norwich at 2:32 is an absolute net tearer......
Barnes and Molby, true class.
Legend. One of the best Liverpool players ever. Pure class. Molby and Barnes were my fave Liverpool players.
I remember when we all said ."he's gonna lose a few stone inside,Whats he gonna be like then "
Loved our Jan
All I can say is this."loved our jan"
Most underrated player of all time. Him, and Matt Le Tissier
waz 312 it

very underrated footballer I thought he was one off the best,, Celtic fan.
Denmark produced some brilliant players
who says tha Lucas is tha new Molby hahaa thats ridiculous. Two totally diff players. Molby one of the Top 5 midfielders we have EVER had. FACT.
Patrick boots nice !! I remember getting a pair of Patrick Liverpool for Christmas
class !!! we need a player like that now!!
Great player, as a Manchester United fan in the late 80s/early 90s when he wasn't always in the Liverpool first XI I'd have loved to have seen him prised away to Old Trafford! I agree with the chap in the footage who says he was a better player than gazza as well.
If I ever need a car turning over.. Jan's the man. Class midfielder 👍
RIP Gary Ablett
'and it came to Molby...'
Pass in the 86 cup final...a true footballer
I meant the pass to Whelan. It's pure class

Its like if you want a great player look at Ajax, so many great danish players have played for Ajax, the scouting team in Ajax is world class.
Patrolled the midfield never seem to run , passes spot on vision and forethought incredible , not bad for a fat bugger!!!!
Yan could put the ball exactly were he wanted to, fantastic player!
Sad that it cant be like this for lfc nowadays
For anyone to say Lucas is the new Molby is insulting not only Big Jan but football too , Lucas is not fit to clean Molby's oots .
+Russell Nash still nowhere near as good as molby
Wow, I never heard that before six years ago. If that was true, then it shows how low Liverpool had sunk at that stage with the ability of players they were getting in the early 2010s. @jibsmokestack1 :another very gifted but understated midfielder was Tony Currie, who drew great admiration from the Brazilians
Yip hats off to JAN!
Great player.
Boy could he play.
Molby and Alonso are so similar
Dominated the centre circle.
gascoigne ... we never saw him in his prime injury free for a three year spell ... something to bare in mind
Yep his lifestyle was absolutely appalling. We ll never know
Mølby is a true legend
Legend.
You dont believe me just watch and see Coutinhos Magic in the Coming Years
imagine a 4 man midfield of Molby, Le Tissier, Hoddel and Gascoigne
forgot how good Liverpool were back in the day.
Some way above gazza, that's a laugh.

2:40 unbelieveable goal!

Cup final team was Fagans team.
@oldbutbeautiful I agree from what i've seen on tape but I'm too young to have seen Currie live.
The goal against Norwich not bad for a big lad...
def true comparing Molby and Barnes with Gazza is like Comparing Messi and Xavi with Robben. Do you have any doubt whos better? Robben like Gazza a very gifted player with Terrific Potential but has Problems with his ego or health while players like messi xavi barnes and molby are out of this world
How about Coutinho to Suarez, does that sound better?
@KingPadboy
not 42 in a row mate
he had 2 saved in his LFC career. One by Dave Beasant at Chelsea and another I think at Southampton!
Jan Molby scored 42 penalties out of 45 taken
His 3 missed penalties were against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in December 1989 (Dave Beasant).
Against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield in January 1986 (Martin Hodge).
Also against QPR at Anfield in the 1986 in the semi finals of the Milk Cup (Paul Barron)
The goal against Norwich from the left wing is just unbelievable
his only down fall was his weight
Haha yes, it is an improvement certainly.
Fun Fact, Jan Molby was also a legend in jail and at his local weight-watchers club.🤣
2.33 HE WOT M8

@ScouseSuarez7 Agree with that
@bazza2k9 Yeah would love him there now!
@Oddjob1177 I agree about Gazza being better but for me Glen Hoddle was the most gifted English midfielder I've seen!
and LAUDRUP!
would have been a better player if he was slim
the only player today who is better then Molby and Barnes is Messi. Sure they were not Maradona but who is besides maybe Messi. One things for sure though Maradona wasnt twice the player Barnes or Molby was.
lucas not good enough to stand in his shadow let alone clean his boots
Too many big Mac's, whoppers, KFC, and Kipling cakes unfortunately made him too fat to play nowadays.
lol pie man molby thats him
No Offense Mate but Have you gone Mad? heres how it is Lucas
Molly was a good player, but I can't listen to any more scouse divs going on.
@KingPadboy you just compared Jan Molby to Lucas.... you're a nugget
@Oddjob1177 Gazza is nobody.. What do you know about fuball...? Gazza whas no way near the class of Mjolby and Barnes..
The hyperbole of Tony Barrett is ridiculous. Even if you thought that Molby was ahead of Gazza, to say he's "quite some way ahead" is pure bias. Oh and your houses are crap as well.
