    I agree with you on almost everything just not on the part when you snipe at the last 2 seconds. If there are many bidders and you're placing your bid at last 5 seconds ebay wont register your bid, it happened to me and I have a great internet connection. I have a great success at last 12 seconds but would go also for 8 sec for a still "comfortable zone" for sniping. At the last 10 seconds there is practically no room to place a bid 2 times you just got one good shot... and I hate when I see people max bidding on an item that has 8 bidding days left!!!

    Hey Max, just wanted to say thanks! I literally followed your instructions on a high ticket item that exploded with bids in the last 15 seconds or so (I don't use eBay for auctions EVER, only Buy it Now), and I waited until the magic 2 seconds and won the bid. Would never have gotten it, and, yes, in my opinion got a pretty great deal. Despite your video being 5 years old, it helped me obtain an amazing collectors item for hundreds of dollars less than the Buy it Now comparables. Cheers!

    • @its_ohhrite
      @its_ohhrite 3 года назад +1

      Congrats! I am going for an item tomorrow! If you don’t mind me asking, how much did you do your max bid for and how much did you actually have to pay for the item? For example I’m willing to pay 500 for this item but if the last bid is only 400 I’ll only have to pay closer to 400 right?

    • @nicholassquared
      @nicholassquared 3 года назад +3

      @@its_ohhrite Yes you are correct. I was prepared to pay 450 when the max last bid was 220. 20 seconds before the end of the auction it exploded with bidders, but I waited, put in 450 and it sold for 405. So max bid before me was likely 400 or so. Best of luck with it

    I learned this from a friend before i even got an ebay account (back in 2001). Since then, I won pretty much all of the auction i've bid on. Usually people go with "round" numbers (like 100, 150, 200). Going just a few dollars above it usually helps to. So in this case i'd set my budget at $201 or something.

      I'm no Ebay expert but what is the difference between putting the $200 bid in 2 days before it ends instead of 12 seconds?

    • @charlierank185
      @charlierank185 3 года назад +3

      @@richdiorio9984 it drives the price up. When another buyer bids say $100 after you bid your $200, they'll get a notification saying they've been outbid by you, causing them to potentially place a higher bid. Let's say they place $130 as their second bid. They'll get another notification saying they've been outbid by you. Then another bidder comes along and does the same thing, etc.. Okay now let's say that the same exact situation happens BUT you bid $200 12 seconds before the auction finishes. You bid the $200, then the other bidder bids their $100 five seconds later.. then they'll see the same notification saying they've been outbid, and if they read that fast enough they might have enough time to bid the $130 but chances are low.. the chances of them bidding the $130 would be even lower if you bid at the last 2 seconds - they wouldn't physically have the time to place another bid - meaning you win the item for $100 instead of $130. So you 'save' $30! Hope that makes sense.

    • @eggmcmuffin9368

      Unfortunately, under the newest eBay User Agreement, Section 23, paragraph 4, it’s worse. eBay could hold use liable for $30 x $30 x $21, or $18,900. They are doing this as part of their campaign to aggressively go after people who snipe. Per eBay, sniping is a violation of both the UA and the Terms of Service since about 2005. Over the past number of years they’ve been really policing the site, removing counterfeit goods and the Sellers (who shut down and then try to set up with new name and proxy server showing different location and IP). They did this after complaints from Users and trademark lawsuits from legal design owners. Now they’re really trying to “level the playing field” by employing code that scans for the usual signs of sniping (no bid history on item, winning bid placed in last 5 seconds of auction, etc). They are focusing on users who snipe repeatedly, not just for an item every once in a while. Once their software identifies a suspect, another program scans that user’s purchase (bid) history for signs of repeated sniping. Under eBay’s UA and TOS, they can invalidate your winning bid(s), suspend your account for a period of time, or terminate your account. With the millions of users, they are going to be focusing on the big fish for a while. Individuals will likely get an email warning them of “suspicious” activity. So IMHO, I’d focus my snipes on bigger ticket items that I really want.

    Thanks. Your video confirmed that I have been generally doing Ebay snipes properly. However, I did learn one thing, and that is to wait until 2 seconds left. I have generally been waiting until under about 8 seconds. The reason I don't wait until 2 seconds, is that I have lost items because my internet connection took longer than 2 seconds to send out my bid. So in the future, I think I will split the difference and aim for about 5 seconds.
    Good point about establishing your maximum. Early on in my Ebay sniping, I lost several items because I didn't accurately set my max.
    About sniping: Some people think sniping is dishonest. After losing a number of items due to sniping, I now think sniping is just part of the game. I sort of miss sniping, because I now make use of Gixen most of the time, which does the sniping for me. It is cheap enough, that I don't even think about paying its cost. I think, though, I will start occasionally sniping on Ebay, because it is really fun.
    One thing I would recommend is refreshing the window you are watching the item in periodically, especially at about 1 minute to go. I have seen the window's time being several seconds off the actual correct time.
    Another thing I would recommend is not adding the item to your watch list. It is posted on the item's webpage how many people are watching it, and I don't really want others to know how many people are watching the item. A large number shown watching it may drive up the max bids for some of the other watchers.
    I generally haven't sniped expensive items on Ebay. I usually only bid on railroad lanterns, Official Guides of the Railways, and model railroad equipment. I think the highest max I ever bid was about $135.00 (just a month ago), because I had lost the bidding on possibly the same exact item about a year before which sold for about $125.00. So the second time, I made sure of what I was comfortable with for my max, set that amount in Gixen, and ended up winning the item for about $30.00.
    I thought about removing my recommendations, as they could conceivably hurt my own sniping, but I am a teacher at heart, so I left them in there. But let it be known, I have a couple of things I do when sniping that will remain a trade secret.

    What is the point of waiting until 2 seconds left? The purpose of bidding the last moment is to prevent the item from gaining attention from other bidders. But when it comes to the last minute, it doesn't matter. If you already set your bidding limit, that will not change whether you place the bid 30 seconds or 5 seconds before the deadline. Even if someone else places a bid 1 second after you, ebay will still uphold the highest bidder via autobidding. Waiting until 2 seconds left just put yourself at risk for internet latency issues.

      turity that's not true. If you bid within one min or even 30 seconds your max bid someone else might see that and have enough time to decide they think the item is worth more than that and pay more. If you wait to the last 2 seconds you give that bidder very little time to think if at all so if their max bid was 180 orginally and yours was 200 you put 200 in with 2 sec left and they just put in 180 giving them no time to rethink and submit a counter offer.

      seller placing a bidding step of his choice like 0.1$/1$/10$ etc. Ebay trying to be in the side of the buyer allow you to pay a step over the last bigger bidder. So lets say this.
      A watch has starting point of 50$, with bid step of 10$.
      If a person (call him A) place a bid for 100$ the item's price will go to 60$ because this is the step and no one else is bidding atm.
      Now lets say a second person appears(call him B) and place the bid of 300£. Then the item's price is raised to 110$. And person B is winning at the moment.
      Now lets say a third person watch the item and is interesting (call him C). C is bidding for 250$.
      At that point items price goes straight to 260$ and B is still winning (because it bid 300$). If no one else bid at that point and the auction is end. The item is sold to B for 260$.
