No idea why but as a kid I thought the picture of Peach on the castle was a secret level, and the canon would let you enter it after collecting every star.
I was certain of that when i was a kid xD But i never got more than 119 stars to unlock the cannon. When growth, i found the last star (in the internet...) it was in the Peach Slide when beating fast... lol

Green Cappy Nope, at least not with the european PAL-Version. After you turn off the N64, you always start with 4 lives (I always save progress after collecting a star). The same with Super Mario World on SNES.
I'm five years late here, but I've got to say - getting lives in Super Mario 64 is completely trivial, so getting 100 of them isn't really a game changer. It's only a minor inconvenience to have to go get extra lives.

I get bored of the game after I do this, because I got all 120 stars and there's literally nothing more to do afterwards since there are no more stars to collect.

As interesting as all this is, I do kind of feel it's a little insulting to the players considering that the lives in this game barely mean anything, a game over is barely even a slap on the wrist as it just means you're outside the castle rather than outside the painting you died in or wherever you died.

Mario is good... But once you get 70 stars the game is basically over.... Flawed logic, or they had other ideas which they didn't put into the game. Instead of it going: 8 stars 30 stars 50 stars 70 stars Should have been 20: 1st Bowser + 1st Key 40: Boos Mansion 60: 2nd Bowser + 2nd Key 80: Upstairs open 100: Outside Cannon 120: Final Bowser Would have been much better...
It's made that way so people could explore the stages they like, skip ones they don't, and still get to the end. Some of the stars are a real pain in the ass, I can't imagine any 90s kids beating the game if it forced you to collect all of them.

there is higher number to get there go to the secret slide and make the time go to 20 thats hard but at least is worth it you can do it over over agian to get like 4000 or m49 stars
😐 I’m not doing that. I’m enjoying the game for the first time. I have no intention on beating the game. The new triple jump looks cool. However I found a way to keep getting 1-ups. I’m now at 80 lives. Once I reach 100 lives I can care less how much I die at the super challenging parts. 🤪

If you got every star in every level including the 100 Coins stars, you're missing one of the 15 Secret Stars. The game probably just checks if you have 120 stars, not if you have 120 stars or more. You probably dont understand this based off your question... The developers know there are only 120 stars you can collect, so the game checks if you have 120 stars specifically to make the fence disappear (the game doesn't check if your stars are greater than or equal to 120, it just checks if your stars are equal to 120), but since you have 121 stars, 121 isn't 120, so the fence is still there.
Um, don't you mean that with 120 Stars, you can go on the roof in Super Mario 64, but you need 150 Stars in Super Mario 64 DS? I beat both games. They are fantastic. I do not know where you got the 65 from. Lol.

in the princess peach slide there are two stars if you get under 20 seconds you get another star. That might be the one you couldn’t find.
