The lip trill is one of the most versatile exercises we have at our disposal as singers. Great for warming up, great for working out new tunes; great for working on expanding our range.
I have done a few tutorials on how to do the lip trill, and if you are not yet able to get your lips going, take a look at these first:
• Singing Lessons for Be...
• Professional Voice Les...
Once you can successfully sustain the lip burbling, try using the exercises in this video to practice singing sustained lines, working on keeping your abdominal muscles engaged on descending phrases and expanding your range.
The lip trill is not the end all be all of vocal exercises, but it is a significant tool to have available to us and worth pursuing even if it is difficult at first.
Thanks for watching and enjoy!
You changed the game on vocal warm ups. Thanks!
I love how you sing when you say "Jeff Rooolka"
You’ve improved my baritone range so well I’m having to move into practicing tenor
same
Me too :')
´´Hello, tenors!'' Always makes my day. I am adding this to the routine. I have a few of your standards in the line up as well. I love that you have to hold your cheeks, same here.
Awesome! Thank you for watching and thanks for adding this into your work flow! I'm glad to hear that the videos are serving you well! Enjoy the channel and keep singing along!
Jeff
I can't even begin to express my gratitude! You're giving AMAZING singing lessons that normally people charge for like 80 bucks all for free! You've helped me greatly improve my voice. I have a lot more confidence in myself because I can hear improvement! If I'm ever in the area with my band it would be such an honor to come in and warm up for a show! Thank you Jeff!
THank you! You're welcome! Yes! If you happen to be passing through the San Francisco area, look me up!
Jeff
I start ail my daily practice whit this one. Thank you
Awesome! Thank you for watching and singing along!
Jeff
I don’t know if I’m a tenor or a baritone so I’m doing this and the baritone warm up my range is e2-c5 oh yeah and btw thank you for the videos man stay safe 😊
Haha I’m the same way sir. I do the tenor and baritone lol
C2-G5 buddy i get it but it’s just about where you feel comfortable and your tambor I know I’m a tenor
I go back to this video all the time to warm up, cool down, and when I get stuck especially if the sticking point is air flow. It's a great length to tack on to any other lesson I'm doing. Thanks Jeff.
I can't enough of these, love them!!
I cannot be happier that I found these singing videos by jeff rolka. I try all the baritone vids and in less than a month, I can hear a clarity of my tone that I never had before. Every day, the notes are getting a little more pronounced and I am gaining control of my range. I had never realized how many aspects that singing and projecting the notes entailed. It is a lot more (technically) complicated than I ever presumed, but jeff keeps it simple and straightforward. Highly recommended.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that! Keep singing along and thank you for watching!
Jeff
I really like lip trills, and these exercises are very helpful! :D
Excellent! Thanks for getting in touch!
Jeff
Thank you for your videos Jeff! This particular warmup has worked really well for me. I'm from Argentina.
Halfway through and this is FANTASTIC! Exactly what I was looking for! Straight to the point. No messing around! You've earned a subscriber!
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Jeff
I love these workouts. They really work!
Hi Jeff! I always use your as well as my personal coach’s exercises to warm up before singing and I sound awesome. Thanks a ton! ❤ from India..
Wonderful!
Even tho I have been doing these on and off and every time I remember I have a performance I think aside the others things I do as in terms of watch vocal coaches that really sing and know what they’re speaking about reaction videos and listening to artists with wide ranges and vast genres of music .. this VIDEOS HAVE BEEN HELPIN ME find my range find my voice my tone everything!
Thanks. And also thank you very much for not talking forever before you got to something of essence.
You're welcome. If it's a practice video I get right to the singing. The technique videos have a bit more chatting but there's still plenty of practical examples.
Thanks for watching!
Jeff
You are awesome
Excellent, exercise if you do it correctly it definitely Gets the kinks out your voice. Thanks 😊
Thank you these exercises! They have really helped me
That exercise at the end was so fun! Caught me by surprise. Thank you.
Awesome! Thank you!
thanks jeff! I like your videos because are long, most exercises audios or videos are so short, I like to warm up while I'm working or answering emails :) This helps me a lot
Brilliant! Well done! Enjoy!
Jeff
Thank you, Jeff. You know your stuff. A great warm up.
My lips are now anesthetized.
Lol
Ha! Best comment.
Hey Jeff,
I love this and so many of your warm ups. And I so appreciate you taking time to read and respond to my and others' questions. And because you do, I'm going to ask a few more that I think would help may and maybe many others.
1. Is voice training more about discovering your voice, developing your voice, or some combination of the two? What I mean is that I've heard some say in order to sing, you just learn to release tension and blockages in order to allow singing to happen naturally. However others describe learning to sing as if it's athletic training, akin to dancing or ballet or lifting weights and that by doing specific exercises you will build the proper muscles, their coordination and strengthen your voice. My hunch (and experience as a slowly growing singer) is that you need both. Curious as to your thoughts!
2. I can't recall hearing you discuss the topic of embouchure. Would love to hear how you define and describe it and it's value to good vocalizing and singing!
3. Might you have any thoughts on the psychology of learning to sing? Are there patterns or themes you have seen in yourself and/or your students? E.g., overcoming challenges and insecurity, common stuck points, what it takes to have a break through and helpful mindset for not getting discouraged and fostering continued growth and enjoyment of singing?
I know these are complex topics but if you think your answers might help others, I'd love to hear what you would say! Keep on doing your amazing work!
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for being here and watching. I'll do this in Questions from Comments 16. Great question! Look for it in a week or two!
Best,
Jeff
Great technical warm up! Thanks for bringing that to the masses$
I love this one. You should make a new lip trill video!
You're the best Jeff
This is really useful. Thanks a lot.
This is fun and useful it helps me controling the flow of great which is hard for me. I have generally a hard time singing over my second break but when it happens ( sometimes) it's magical i can sing d5s and E5. Would you suggest me doing this everyday ? ( Btw i'd love people stop saying i'm singing in head voice while i'm mostly in chest cause my voice is really light on top and strong on bottom...) thank u Jeff for those great videos
Without any further ado at 0:53 😉 Thanks Jeff! 🐯

Thanks from India. :)
You're welcome from England!!! Thanks for watching!
Jeff
I tried both exercises for tenor and baritone but it seems none of the two fits me. I can't reach those high/low notes 😥
These videos cover all the variations within in a given fach (vocal range) so it's likely that there are a few notes that in one video are too high, and in another are too low. For starters, start with the baritone videos, just drop out when it gets too low. Then, with the tenor videos, drop out if it gets too high or you feel like you're straining. Note the points where you're dropping out and that will tell you a bit about your fach, and which videos will work best for you!
I hope that helps!
Jeff
Hi Jeff- So glad I found your channel. Can these exercises be done with a low larynx as well?
Thanks for the great content!

Hello Jeff,
angel here tenor
Had a question ,
I've come to find out that I sometimes loose focuse on actual sound on my piano / keyboard ,
Cld I use a sound that keeps in chk ,
Organ for example
Wld that be safe in other words wld it change my singing habits or
What would you recommend to keep me in true note sound ?
Thanks a million !!
Hello Angel! Yes! Great question! Sometimes we don't 'track' pitch the same when using different instruments. Use whatever sound helps you stay on pitch the best, but also give some time to the other sounds to work towards having a greater internal sense of the pitches, rather than solely relying on the instrument.
Best!
Jeff
I am totally new to the lip trills. It seems the only way I can make some semblance of trill is to stick the tip of my tongue out of my mouth and even then my breath is uneven. Any hints to improving this situation? Thanks. I just discovered you and I will be your RUclips Student for a while.
Maybe try my method on my website to help with this. It's free and it's here: www.jeffrolka.com you get access when you sign up for the newsletter. Lip trilling can be tricky, but it is a very useful tool and is worth pursuing.
Best!
Jeff
Hey Jeff, I was the one that commented in the baritone lip trills. As I said I’m a baritenor, and I can get to the top range when I’m vocalizing but when I sing it’s kind of hard, sometimes I get there and sometimes I don’t. Is there a way I can contact to? I’ve been doing the baritone and tenor lip trill madness I love them
Hello Jordan! It's going to be inconsistent for awhile when working through the incremental changes required to make a smooth transition across the secondo passaggio. I'm not sure if you mean connect to the upper register or contact me though, in your comment.
In any case, the lip trill is a good start, but we have to transition over the vowels in order to get the registration transition to work in songs. I did a three part series, forgive me if I sent the link already:

Maybe alternate between singing melody then a harmony?
I was just wondering while watching this video.Could this video be used as a stand alone warm up? Or should I be having more of a mix of things in my warm ups? Thanks for all the help with these videos Jeff. Great to have something to go to that has pretty much everything needed.👍
You're very welcome! Thank you for your kind words!
You could really do either, and I would encourage you to give it a try. I did this video primarily because I realized I didn't have a straight up lip trill practice video. There are two others but they are instructional in addition to having a few exercises.
I'll talk a bit about this more at the live event tonight. Here's a link just in case:

Hello!!
Interesting question. Could be a variety of factors but they would relate to adduction. Have a look at this, if you have not already:

Jeff
Please, do a new one of those!
Happily!!!

haha
Being a Soprano with a large range that you can do Tenor to Soprano (occasionally baritone on a good day) 😂
Do you have any videos focused on low notes? 🤔
Thanks for watching! There's some variety in low note practices. If you're a soprano looking for primo passaggio practice, then:
ruclips.net/video/MC2efq5wG-8/видео.html
I hope that helps!
Jeff
When you say "keep lifting, keep that engagement going" what are you referring to?
lateral expansion of the rib cage to allow for abdominal lift towards your sternum.
@@JeffRolka Oh ok. Thank you for letting me know. 🙂
Hi Jeff!! Since I’m a baritone, Is it okay to warm up with the baritone/tenor lip trill madness then go into How to sing over the break videos?
Absolutely! Might be a nice way to ease across your secondo passaggio quite a lot too, if you have rep that's in that range!
Jeff
@@JeffRolka Thanks for confirmation and replying!
You had won a suscriber
Holler
Thank you for help! :3
Is it wrong or inefficient it I find myself naturally going into falsetto some of these ?
Thanks for watching!
That depends on whether or not that's your intention. If it isn't, it could possibly be both. It certainly isn't the intention of the exercises, but that doesn't mean you can't use them that way.
All the best,
Jeff
Hi sir jeff can you help how can i reach the high notes?
Hey Jeff. Love your videos. I went to your website and signed up for your emails to get your free course, but nothing came through! Can you help me access it? !
Absolutely - on the website is a contact sheet:

Send a message to me from the email you used to sign up and we'll sort it out. My apologies for the frustration.

Hello Jeff ,
Had a question ,
I've come to realize that when I do the lip trill I can't hear my own voice moving so I loose concentration and tone ,,,Due to the lip trilling,,
Anyways I replaced it by humming just with the Mmmmm Sound and really felt different I actually felt a bit of more power but a bit more hard to control volume ,,,
What's your opinion on this and on using the hummm ?
Thank you Jeff
You Rock The Earth !!!
Hello John doe!
I'm glad you've found some success with humming. The lip trill isn't the end all be all of exercises, but it does have some great benefits in terms of evaluating airflow and also allowing the beginnings of vocal fold release. I wouldn't worry about it right now, but come back to it in a week or two and see if it gets better. This assumes you continue the rest of your vocal practice, using vowels sounds, humming, perhaps a different semi-occluded exercise such as using a straw. You could do that on any of the videos, sing with a straw in your mouth still trying to make good vowels and transitions. Remove the straw and try it again. See what, if anything has changed.
Best,
Jeff
Dear Jeff Rolka
Tell me please, when doing this exercise, can I stretch the chest range up to 2 octaves? И
Or do you need to do some other exercises?
And how many times a day do you need to develop a range?
Thank you very much for everything you do for us!
In advance I apologize for my English, I am from Russia.
I love london! : D
Hello and thanks for your questions! You will want to do some other exercises in addition to this video and furthermore 'stretching' one's chest voice isn't entirely how it's done. Have a look at this video:
ruclips.net/video/erFjTGWia5U/видео.html
London is great, but I'm actually now back in California! If you have other questions, come by my weekly live event. It's on Saturdays and 10am PST. I can answer your questions and do demonstrations.
Best!

I got a question how do I sing high enough if is it going to work much well as I can as
Wow!
I'm a high baritone. Would this exercise be good for extended my range up? Thank you.
Yes! The lip trill can help with exploring registration events and integrating that range!
Jeff
Jeff I have a leggiero voice so a high tenor range but I speak low and breathy. My singing practice Time is limited what would you recommand me to be ready to go in 20 minutes ? I usually take up to 50 minutes to be able to sing in my natural range (F3-F5)
I notmally do your alto vocal warm up
I've had teahers in the past suggest that if it takes longer than twenty minutes for me to warm up that I need to address other aspects of my 'warm up.'
Perhaps assess how physically warmed up you are. Is your body ready to go? Having moved around a bit and in general physically prepped to use your body.
Singing is a full body sport - warming up your body, as you might for sport may expedite your warm up - if that would be helpful!
Jeff
@@JeffRolka thank you for answering i have issue to support(muscular) and control the change of color in my voice ( heavier bottom) and over A4 lighter i guess i need to do more of your videos . Thank you because they are great ... Have a lovely evening
New comment
Hey Jeff! When you say "keep lifting" in this video (towards the end) are you referring to the soft palette? Or something else?
Thank you for asking! I'm talking about your physical engagement in your abdominal area. Lean into your appoggio. In common parlance, support, though I am not fond of that 'description.'
I hope that helps!
Jeff
What happened if I can't sing the high notes in lip trill but I really want to? Is it possible to keep doing it on lip trills?
Great questions! I'll address this in this week's Q & A;
ruclips.net/video/xjfl32p9ks0/видео.html
In the meantime, however, I would recommend you do the range of the video that stays within your thyro arytenoid dominant singing voice (chest voice).
All the best!
Jeff
I think you could transition it into head voice and continue doing it on lip trills.

Dear Jeff, Does the range develop this exercise?
It's the other way around....the exercises help with range development. Best!
Jeff
Lip Trill Developing a range?
+Jeff Rolka how long does it take to get use to the notes?
It really varies. I have had clients take a significant amount of time and I have had clients, recently in fact, that utterly blew me away with how quickly they incorporated the techniques I teach into their singing technique. Seriously blown away. Literally a few weeks and there was nearly no noticeable break.
Honestly, though, this is not just what I'm teaching but their dedication, observational skills and hard work. I may have provided instruction, but the effort they put in was astounding. Not in time, by the way, but in attention and quality.
Best,
Jeff
