    The lip trill is one of the most versatile exercises we have at our disposal as singers. Great for warming up, great for working out new tunes; great for working on expanding our range.
    I have done a few tutorials on how to do the lip trill, and if you are not yet able to get your lips going, take a look at these first:
    • Singing Lessons for Be...
    • Professional Voice Les...
    Once you can successfully sustain the lip burbling, try using the exercises in this video to practice singing sustained lines, working on keeping your abdominal muscles engaged on descending phrases and expanding your range.
    The lip trill is not the end all be all of vocal exercises, but it is a significant tool to have available to us and worth pursuing even if it is difficult at first.
    Thanks for watching and enjoy!

    I cannot be happier that I found these singing videos by jeff rolka. I try all the baritone vids and in less than a month, I can hear a clarity of my tone that I never had before. Every day, the notes are getting a little more pronounced and I am gaining control of my range. I had never realized how many aspects that singing and projecting the notes entailed. It is a lot more (technically) complicated than I ever presumed, but jeff keeps it simple and straightforward. Highly recommended.

    Hey Jeff,
    I love this and so many of your warm ups. And I so appreciate you taking time to read and respond to my and others' questions. And because you do, I'm going to ask a few more that I think would help may and maybe many others.
    1. Is voice training more about discovering your voice, developing your voice, or some combination of the two? What I mean is that I've heard some say in order to sing, you just learn to release tension and blockages in order to allow singing to happen naturally. However others describe learning to sing as if it's athletic training, akin to dancing or ballet or lifting weights and that by doing specific exercises you will build the proper muscles, their coordination and strengthen your voice. My hunch (and experience as a slowly growing singer) is that you need both. Curious as to your thoughts!
    2. I can't recall hearing you discuss the topic of embouchure. Would love to hear how you define and describe it and it's value to good vocalizing and singing!
    3. Might you have any thoughts on the psychology of learning to sing? Are there patterns or themes you have seen in yourself and/or your students? E.g., overcoming challenges and insecurity, common stuck points, what it takes to have a break through and helpful mindset for not getting discouraged and fostering continued growth and enjoyment of singing?
    I know these are complex topics but if you think your answers might help others, I'd love to hear what you would say! Keep on doing your amazing work!

    I tried both exercises for tenor and baritone but it seems none of the two fits me. I can't reach those high/low notes 😥

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 года назад +2

      These videos cover all the variations within in a given fach (vocal range) so it's likely that there are a few notes that in one video are too high, and in another are too low. For starters, start with the baritone videos, just drop out when it gets too low. Then, with the tenor videos, drop out if it gets too high or you feel like you're straining. Note the points where you're dropping out and that will tell you a bit about your fach, and which videos will work best for you!
      I hope that helps!
      Jeff

    Had a question ,
    I've come to find out that I sometimes loose focuse on actual sound on my piano / keyboard ,
    Cld I use a sound that keeps in chk ,

    Wld that be safe in other words wld it change my singing habits or
    What would you recommend to keep me in true note sound ?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  4 года назад +1

      Hello Angel! Yes! Great question! Sometimes we don't 'track' pitch the same when using different instruments. Use whatever sound helps you stay on pitch the best, but also give some time to the other sounds to work towards having a greater internal sense of the pitches, rather than solely relying on the instrument.
      Best!

    I am totally new to the lip trills. It seems the only way I can make some semblance of trill is to stick the tip of my tongue out of my mouth and even then my breath is uneven. Any hints to improving this situation? Thanks. I just discovered you and I will be your RUclips Student for a while.

As I said I’m a baritenor, and I can get to the top range when I’m vocalizing but when I sing it’s kind of hard, sometimes I get there and sometimes I don’t. Is there a way I can contact to? Hello Jordan! It's going to be inconsistent for awhile when working through the incremental changes required to make a smooth transition across the secondo passaggio. I'm not sure if you mean connect to the upper register or contact me though, in your comment.
      In any case, the lip trill is a good start, but we have to transition over the vowels in order to get the registration transition to work in songs. I did a three part series, forgive me if I sent the link already:

    Had a question ,
    I've come to realize that when I do the lip trill I can't hear my own voice moving so I loose concentration and tone ,,,Due to the lip trilling,,
    Anyways I replaced it by humming just with the Mmmmm Sound and really felt different I actually felt a bit of more power but a bit more hard to control volume ,,,
    What's your opinion on this and on using the hummm ?
    Thank you Jeff
    You Rock The Earth !!!

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  4 года назад +1

      Hello John doe!
      I'm glad you've found some success with humming. The lip trill isn't the end all be all of exercises, but it does have some great benefits in terms of evaluating airflow and also allowing the beginnings of vocal fold release. I wouldn't worry about it right now, but come back to it in a week or two and see if it gets better. This assumes you continue the rest of your vocal practice, using vowels sounds, humming, perhaps a different semi-occluded exercise such as using a straw. You could do that on any of the videos, sing with a straw in your mouth still trying to make good vowels and transitions. Remove the straw and try it again. See what, if anything has changed.
      Best,
      Jeff

    I'm a high baritone. Would this exercise be good for extended my range up? Thank you.

      Yes! The lip trill can help with exploring registration events and integrating that range!

    Jeff I have a leggiero voice so a high tenor range but I speak low and breathy. My singing practice Time is limited what would you recommand me to be ready to go in 20 minutes ? I usually take up to 50 minutes to be able to sing in my natural range (F3-F5)

      I notmally do your alto vocal warm up

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  4 года назад +1

      I've had teahers in the past suggest that if it takes longer than twenty minutes for me to warm up that I need to address other aspects of my 'warm up.'
      Perhaps assess how physically warmed up you are. Is your body ready to go? Having moved around a bit and in general physically prepped to use your body.
      Singing is a full body sport - warming up your body, as you might for sport may expedite your warm up - if that would be helpful!
      Jeff

    Hey Jeff! When you say "keep lifting" in this video (towards the end) are you referring to the soft palette? Or something else?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  4 года назад

      Thank you for asking! I'm talking about your physical engagement in your abdominal area. Lean into your appoggio. In common parlance, support, though I am not fond of that 'description.'
      I hope that helps!
      Jeff

    What happened if I can't sing the high notes in lip trill but I really want to? Is it possible to keep doing it on lip trills?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  8 лет назад

      Great questions! I'll address this in this week's Q & A;
      ruclips.net/video/xjfl32p9ks0/видео.html
      In the meantime, however, I would recommend you do the range of the video that stays within your thyro arytenoid dominant singing voice (chest voice).
      All the best!
      Jeff

      I think you could transition it into head voice and continue doing it on lip trills.

    +Jeff Rolka how long does it take to get use to the notes?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  7 лет назад +1

      It really varies. I have had clients take a significant amount of time and I have had clients, recently in fact, that utterly blew me away with how quickly they incorporated the techniques I teach into their singing technique. Seriously blown away. Literally a few weeks and there was nearly no noticeable break.
      Honestly, though, this is not just what I'm teaching but their dedication, observational skills and hard work. I may have provided instruction, but the effort they put in was astounding. Not in time, by the way, but in attention and quality.
      Best,
      Jeff
