    The nintendo DS and 3DS were the height of gaming for me. Playing with my brother these incredible games in the palm of our hands. Being able to use both screens to play games in ways that we never thought possible. We even got my little sister to start playing games with us, and she never even touched video games before. It truly was a magical time

    I recently modded my sp with a new IPS screen and shell. Then I played Golden Sun and The Lost Age back-to-back over the past couple of months. Doing this has totally rekindled my love for handhelds. I play on my lunch break and when I get in bed. It's so nice to have these little 20-30 min play sessions.

    • @infasis
      @infasis 2 года назад +1

      Was it easy? I was thinking about doing an IPS screen on the original GBA as my first real modding project.
      (I've fixed all types of stuff and am comfortable with electronics general, but I've never soldered before so that's always been the biggest obstacle for me.)
      (Also, screw new phones and laptops and stuff where you need a damn heatgun and pry tool just to open them up)

    • @bclikesyou
      @bclikesyou 2 года назад +1

      @@infasis I can only speak to modding a GBA SP. I wouldn't call it easy as I had no prior experience with soldering but I learned along the way! Most of the modding is just taking apart the SP carefully. The one solder job was if you want 6 levels of brightness in which case you have to solder 1 wire. I bought all my parts from Retro Modding and Handheld Legend.
      All in all highly recommended. It's a lot of fun and the new screens really make you appreciate how beautiful some of those old games are.

    • @infasis
      @infasis 2 года назад +1

      @@bclikesyou Nice, thank you. I think I might just buy a soldering kit and start practicing. A few mods I'm interested in it's optional like that, but I'm kinda picky and learning really is long overdue for me.

      Put it this way. There's a reason at every garage sale and flea market handhelds are the first consoles sold fast or harder to get. Everyone rather have something you can take everywhere and all of them are easy to get free native games for whether thru flash carts or gb and gba and ds/ds lite or through software with the dsi, 3ds, psp and ps vita. Honestly the last 4 are the best in this aspect cause the older ones you need flashcarts which still cost decent money especially the gba one.

I get carsick sometimes, but hiding under a blanket and plugging my earbuds in while playing the newest game my dad got for me was such a vital part of my childhood. I recently got to relive that for the first time in years when I got Hollow Knight for the switch the same day we were driving 3 hours to see family. Starting that game in the car was such a magically nostalgic feeling that it nearly brought me to tears.

    This is super similar to my experience. This was the golden age. Gba and ds was like the perfect way to just have access to incredible games at any time. Quality games made for the systems. Instead of doing homogenous 3d graphics we had memorable and future proof art styles that look better than most early 3d games and have more personality than most modern games. Pokemon games specifically had so much more character before 3d.

    As someone who owned both a DS and a PSP in my youth I always preferred my Nintendo DS. Any game I'd play on the PSP I'd rather play on the PS3 because a lot of PSP games had short storys and the gameplay was lesser than on PS3 overall. The Nintendo DS games I played took advantage of dual screens and were genuinely fun when you wanted to play something on the go or while you're watching tv. I made the mistake of selling my Nintendo DS back in the day but I now own a new Nintendo 3DS XL along with all the older games I had back in the day for the DS since the 3DS also plays DS games. The DS/3DS library is massive as a whole and you had a lot more options to choose from than the PSP or the Vita which is one of the reasons it was more popular. Nintendo fully supported their DS lineup whereas Sony kind of half supported their PSP lineup before killing it off.
    I own a Nintendo Switch and a 3DS and while I do love the Switch, I love my 3DS just a bit more because it's truly a handheld gaming device that's still very fun to this day.

    It’s a less talked about aspect of the advantages of handhelds, but they really are fantastic options for people like me with health issues. Sure gaming on a console is seen as a lazy activity, however when you struggle to walk sometimes getting to the couch can be too much.
    I remember in 2020, before the pandemic even happened, I got majorly sick and none of the doctors I visited knew why. I was miserable, I couldn’t sit or stand upright without passing out or getting dizzy, and was majorly confined to sitting and laying in bed. In between visiting specialists and wasting away on a mattress, my dad one day was like “What color Nintendo switch do you want?” I picked out the yellow lite because the battery life was better than the regular version and I was too sick to take advantage of the tv docking anyways. When that thing came in the mail it was the happiest I had been in months. Sure I was still feeling terrible but I could now enjoy video games in bed, that improved my quality of life so much.

    I remember when the PSP came out; man, the DS dominated it. Most people I know didn't play PSP games, they used it as am emulation machine. If you wanted to play games you played the DS. lol That said, I've played the TWEWY on the DS and fell in love. It's so unique and so creative that I honestly don't think it works outside it. I could go on, but I'll refrain.
    The phat DS, DS Lite, SP... I had the Color for Pokemon, 3DS for Ace Attorney, but the DS & SP were the love of my life. I still have mine and I'll never give them up.

My main consoles were Handheld Consoles while my older brothers got to play the N64,PS2,Gamecube,etc. while I get to watch them, and sometimes they'll let me play when they were done. Or i'd sneak a session of playing the home consoles while they were busy lol So handheld consoles were really all I could get my hands on fulltime.

    So I had both the ds/3ds and psp and ps vita. I liked both for different reasons, mostly for the specific ips they carried. TBH like SMT and Zelda. At one point I was using my psp and then ps vita a lot more cause of the other features they had. Like watching movies/shows on it! I have found memories of watching lupin the 3rd a woman named fujiko on my psp. I sold all my handhelds over the years and I miss them. BUT I do have a Switch now so playing it off the dock is great to get those handheld vibes.

      I don't think Sony will make a PSVITA 2 nor will Nintendo make a 3DS2. And that's me speaking as a fan of the PSP and Vita and DS lines. It seems unlikely from a market perspective.
      The Switch was successful because Nintendo already had a healthy handheld line and developers that made games for it while not really doing well if they competed with Sony and Microsoft as a console. In addition, Nintendo doesn't focus on graphical fidelity so it was easy for Nintendo to shift everything towards a main handheld and consolidate all devs to work on one main platform without being limited by being a handheld.
      The Steam Deck has the advantage that it has access to Steam, one of the largest libraries ever. In addition, if the user is already a PC player, they have their entire library already available on the Steam Deck with no additional purchases. Valve doesn't need to make games for it as it already has them.
      Sony doesn't have these advantages. If they were to make a new handheld it wouldn't be as powerful as the PS4 since they have to keep production costs low so people will buy it. Meaning it won't have access to the PS4's entire library and devs will have to tweak their PS4 or earlier games to work on it taking up valuable development resources. In addition, Sony would have to support a PS3.5 like device while also supporting the PS4, PS5 and PSVR at the same time. And seeing as they'd have to make graphically impressive games since that's their MO, it would limit the speed and production of games for the new handheld. And at that point, Sony's better off making games for their already established platforms.
      Basically, Nintendo only has to worry about supporting one device by doing what they were already doing. Valve doesn't have to worry about making any games for the Steam Deck. But Sony would have its attention and resources divided far more by a device that would need a lot more resources to even stay afloat. A somewhat casual-hardcore gamer has access to the Switch for portable play. A PC player has access to the Steam Deck. The only real advantage the Vita 2 would have is being able to play some Playstation exclusives portable. Which would mean mostly porting worse versions of existing PS4 games and spending valuable resources to make PS3.5 level games that may generate more money being used to make PS5 games instead.
      If Nintendo made a 3DS2, they'd run into the same issue. Only worse since they already have a portable system in the Switch.

    I can't believe I haven't come across your channel before! This video is amazaing and it made want to revisit a ton of GBA games from my childhood. One thing that I really like about handheld gaming consoles besides, you know them being protable is that they are personal, I have two younger brothers and they generally don't take good care of their stuff, so having to share a console with them was a nightmare! I remember when my dad got us a PS1 and I was so hyped to try it, I linked it to the TV and went to get some discs and when I came back I found my brother wiping his FUCKING ORANGE JUICE THAT HE HAD SPILT ALL OVER OUR PS1! I didn't work after that and I never got a new PS1 and as you can probably tell I'm still pissed off about it. The day I found out about the GBA I kept asking my parents to get me one and when they finally did it was HEAVEN! I spent a ton of hours playing Pokemon FireRed and Emerald, TMNT games (especially the movie one which is very underappreciated in my opinion), Batman games, Beyblade, Megaman Battle Networks, Super Mario... I can go on for days! Not having to worry about long road trips felt unreal and having my own personal console was a dream come true (it's been over 18 YEARS since the day I got my original GBA and it still works!) for these reasons and many more the GBA will forever be my favorite handheld console and have a special place in my heart. Thank you for the memories Nintendo ❤

    The World Ends With You had one of the best stories i ever experienced in a game, tbh.
    I personally never had a portable console until the PSP. But after i got the PSP i played on it until the joystick's nub literally broke off, superglued it back, then played more until the internal components of the joystick wore down so hard that the drift is almost unbearable and i still sometimes play on it even with the drift. (Right direction barely works anymore and it drifts to the left.)
    To me the PSP was the best possible console. Never liked the DS because the games looked like, you know... "Booty". The thing i liked the most was the graphics that the PSP was capable of. Games were comparable to what i have been playing on the PS2.
    I don't have any other portables, besides a 3DS. It's cool. Has the glass-free 3D screen.
    But i was hella into mobile gaming, like, phone stuff. Symbian OS, literally the best OS. Ultra high quality games. A lot of PS1-quality games right there in my palm. With that phone i got into emulation. Discovered the Pokemon games and many others.

    But, I just wanted to say that the poop jokes and sex jokes and stuff... really kill the vibe. They take away from what you're going for and make your videos a lot like every single other channel there is.

    My favorite handheld console as of now is the Nintendo Switch, but my favorite handheld console game was probably Metroid Fusion. It has an interesting story Samus is attacked by an X Parasite, which nearly kills her, and copies Samus at her strongest form, and she crashes her gunship as the infection starts to take hold. After nearly dying, a vaccine for the X Parasite using Metroid DNA is quickly developed, which Samus's life, but at the cost of much of her strength and identity. Samus controls extremely well in Fusion, both in terms of button mapping and movement. I love that I only need to hold the R Button to fire missiles, and that Samus is more agile with an almost ninja like quality to her movement. The SA-X is so powerful that it's terrifying the first time you encounter it, especially when at one point, you're forced to fight it or otherwise run. It also introduced one the best bosses in the series, known as Nightmare, which can manipulate gravity and almost render missiles useless.
