  • The third Kapitan China of Kuala Lumpur Yap Ah Loy was a leader of the Chinese community in Kuala Lumpur who left China in search of a better life.
Landing in Melaka first in 1854 before making his way to Kuala Lumpur, it was through his hard work, perseverance, and entrepreneurship that he became compelling, influential, and rich in Malaya and was largely responsible for the development of the city.
The Vibes Culture and Lifestyle presents a special series to show the many colours and shades of Kuala Lumpur in celebrating its Golden Jubilee Year since becoming a Federal Territory of Malaysia on February 1, 1972, in a special interview with the descendants of third Kapitan China of Kuala Lumpur Yap Ah Loy.

It is really sad and frustrating to see how Yap Ah Loy and his contributions to Malaysia have all but been forgotten or erased from our history books due to the ignorance and narrow-mindedness of many ethnocentric politicians from the ruling party throughout the years. Therefore, having a museum dedicated to him is absolutely significant in recalling the factual historical period of Malaysia that shapes the current modern society. Yap Ah Loy was more Malaysian than any other Malaysian then, now and forever. He was the man who practised the muhibbah concept which is the progenitor of the government's madani project but the only exception is Yap Ah Loy's muhibbah is more honest in terms of action rather than just words.

Luckily his descendants are there to give the facts that we learnt about in school. There are documented proof of his great contribution to this nation. Many of those who are here today had not yet arrived from Indonesia then.

Ala bagi orang Malaysia pun bukan deme nak kerja pun. Kalau kerja restoran, kerja kilang, kerja construction, kerja buat jalan semua x nak. Kalau bagi orang Malaysia buat kerja2 ni gaji mesti nak tinggi. Harga barang akan naik mendadak. Lepas harga barang naik complain x habis2. Pada saya immigration policy kat Malaysia ni dh ok dh. Orang pekerja asing susah nak jadi penduduk tetap. Dorang x blh bawak anak bini dtg sini. Bukan mcm kat negara barat tu sampai dah out of control. Cumanye kita kena jaga dari segi illegal immigrant dtg sini je. Tgk sejak kebelekangan ni pun dah banyak kena halau dah ok la tu. Kita x blh nak semua benda. At the end of the day kena give & take. Jangan la busuk hati pula dengan pekerja asing nak cari makan.
