  • This project was for my friend Justin, he needed a new coffee table, because his dog ate his old one.... So we decided to build one! This was a design that he found and asked me if we could build it, and we did! Hope you enjoy!

      Excellent video content! Apologies for butting in, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Rozardner Easy Food Reality (should be on google have a look)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for learning the trick to build great sheds and master woodworking without the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my old buddy Taylor finally got great results with it.

    Your table top is going to split when it expands and contracts cause you screwed it down to the base. You should get some table top fasteners to allow for movement

    Jointers? Planers? Routers for better joints?

    • @tarickman
      @tarickman 6 лет назад +3

      Chris S I'm sure more tools will come with time especially if he continues to build. Not a bad turn out for not having the tools you mention. I think I would have went with table top fasteners but again with time I suppose.

    • @pickledparsleyparty
      @pickledparsleyparty 5 лет назад +1

      Jointers and planers are not rookie tools. Who wants to spend that money and garage space when they're getting started.
      Pocket hole screws are great. They're basically tenons that force their mortises into the other side of the joint. They're just ugly and easy. For rookies, they're ideal.
      A router is pretty good, even for rookies, though. With a 2-inch straight bit and a cheap router table, they could have used it to joint those table top boards just fine.

    • @justinskidmore9677
      @justinskidmore9677 5 лет назад

      @@pickledparsleyparty yeah, also I have to say that a table saw with a single nice flat fence as a guide will get those boards flush.....you don't need a jointer.

    • @pickledparsleyparty
      @pickledparsleyparty 5 лет назад +1

      @@justinskidmore9677 Yeah. If you're okay with wasting a little extra wood, you can flip the same board over after each of a few passes along a table saw fence. Assuming the board isn't super warped, the cut side gets straighter with each pass.

    • @MrDanharmon
      @MrDanharmon 5 лет назад +1

      Just looking at it, it looks like around 7-8 2x4s and three 2x2 and maybe two 1x10. So, around $40 + 12 + 20? Not including hardware, stain and paint. So $100ish. They went with 27x52 on the top. If you lower that to 23x47 or so it's still a decent size and you'd probably save around $10.

    As a joiner with over 30 years experience. It dismays me when I see what could potentially be a nice piece of furniture, just being put together with some screws and wood glue. A lot of people don’t make time to do proper mortice and tenon Joinery. I appreciate that it’s not essential for some people but if your going to the trouble of making something you want to keep in your home. I truly believe it’s worth the time to just go that extra mile and make a professional job of it. Just my opinion 👍

    • @dangerously72
      @dangerously72 6 лет назад +8

      Kreg Jig and pocket-hole screws do just fine for us typical DIY's. Not many DIY have the time/knowledge to do professional mortice/tenon joinery. Just my opinion.

      I'm a beginning woodworker and made a nice table for a friend. Another friend said "ohh, make me something." I asked what, and she showed me this video. I saw it and it's definitely not to my taste. I asked if she liked the rough top or if she wanted me to upgrade the wood. She said she liked it...how the whole table looked. I told her I'm going to have to put some of my lessons to use but I'd do my best to keep it looking rustic. :D A project similar to this is what got me into woodworking...don't put them down, they should be proud of their beginner skills...they built a table they like! They'll get sucked into spending thousands on tools soon enough (I did lol). I'm going to build hers with 2x8s ripped down to size and will employ my jointer and planer as needed, and will likely tighten up the joints (and probably forget about screws, but I haven't started yet), but they definitely made a rustic table and should be proud of it.
