[Groomer Giraffe TV] Reason why Shiba's are not accepted at grooming salons

  • Some Shibas I've met are extremely shy and they're afraid of water. In addition, they are cry babies and easily frightened.
    However eventually, most of them were able to overcome their bad habits and became good dogs when they come to my salon.
    If they come to groom periodically they can do much better!
    This cute little 'Kiwi' is also getting better :)

    For those who are confused looking at the 'anal sac' caption. According to wikipedia,
    The anal glands or anal sacs are small glands near the anus in many mammals, including dogs[1] and cats. They are paired sacs on either side of the anus between the external and internal sphincter muscles. Sebaceous glands within the lining secrete a liquid that is used for identification of members within a species. These sacs are found in many species of carnivorans,[2] including wolves,[3] bears,[4][5] sea otters[6] and kinkajous.[7]
    Hope it helped folks!

      📣Edit: I'm a trained, licensed Veterinary Technician and have almost 15 years experience. I have another comment for any questions about this. Thanks!📣
      Also a big reason why dogs "scrape" their butts across carpet or grass. The glands are supposed to express or empty themselves during 💩, but for many reasons, (so many reasons!) the glands need to be expressed physically by an expert. There are 2 ways to physically express them- externally or internally. Most groomers are taught the external method, but Vet's will always use internal method, with gloved hands and lots of lubricant.

    • @thecomplexitiesoftheobvious
      @thecomplexitiesoftheobvious 2 года назад +79

      Don't master it. If a dog presents this behavior, use a cone, or a muzzle. She probably thinks she "knows the dog or the breed well enough" not to get bitten, but the dog was clearly uncomfortable and inclined to bite her. In the end, everything is fine, until it's not. All these internet "experts" saying how "amazing" she is would be calling for PETA and a shooting squadron if she got bitten, because: "Omg, she pushed the dog too far, what a terrible person!". Dogs may present certain traits when it comes to breeds, but in the end, every dog has its own particular behavior/temper. So yeah, if a dog gives you evident signs of "you're this close to losing a chunk of your hand", don't worry about flinching, worry about your hand.

    • @keyeriastevenson2773
      @keyeriastevenson2773 2 года назад +46

      @@thecomplexitiesoftheobvious I’m sure she knows there’s a high chance of being bitten… lmao that’s the risk u take when ur in this line of work. But I’m also personally not going to let a dog think that biting or snapping at me is okay. Yes they’re an animal and they have tendencies but Pulling ur hand away shows them that biting and snapping at ppl is okay when they want to be left alone. People should just use their brain and look for the signs of the dog letting them know they’re uncomfortable before they snap at u because 9/10 they’re showing that they’re uncomfortable before they bite. For example licking their lips is a sign of possibly being uncomfortable or nervous.. tail between the legs, having their hair up. Etc.. Watching the signs works for me every time but I’m not claiming to be an expert or anything.

    Lots of people love animals. Lots of people work with animals. But this lady? She was born to do this kind of job - she has a love for it an innate understanding of her 'clients' and is all about positive reinforcement. Working with animals isn't always easy, and more people than not work on fear or negative reinforcement. Guys, this lady is a gem. Finding solutions that not only get her job DONE, but help the dog in the future.

    • @graceswan4353

      @@AuroraEAustralis yes some dogs are still very dangerous when they’re taken to a groomer. The owner needs to take responsibility and be patient and give compliments at home because with a dangerous dog it will take a long time for it to feel safe. The groomer doesn’t have enough time for this in many cases, so the owners need to socialise and train their dog well with positive reinforcement

      If I raise my voice, it’s enough for my horse, but it’s like a volume button. Start at 0 and increase as you need to. They are 1200lbs snd most of them never mean to hurt you, but their physiology and size work against that sometimes. I WILL smack a horse if it bites. It has to be within 3 seconds of the behaviour and it is to Alarm - never to hurt.
      I’ve also had dogs and I believe in positive reinforcement and training. It’s repetition. Animals, like people, need to repeat and practice until they understand and that can take time and patience. It’s obvious she knows this dog, and I agree with your statement.
      Again - I don’t like to hurt or scare an animal into behaving. I believe in building a relationship of trust and clear and repetitive training. But I always say, if it’s a question of my safety or the animal’s safety, I’m going to always choose the person and sometimes sweet words and treats aren’t enough, and some behavioural problems are deep-rooted and need a firm hand who isn’t afraid to present themselves as the alpha dog, or horse, the one who is in charge.
      I love seeing her with this dog though. She really tried her best and thought outside the box!

    A grooming hammock would be perfect for this breed. She did extremely well & was very patient but if there's potential for being bitten it's a much safer option & I hear they're very relaxing for the dogs. This pup was so cute while getting a bath, like I'm sorry I snapped at you.

      I have grooming hammocks and 4 shibas, they can get out of it. 2 of our shibas ive handled since birth. Played with feet daily, bathed often and they still hate their baths and nail trims. I have exactly 1 shiba who sits still and thats because he's a feral dog so terrified he's frozen with fear.

      Lol I am so glad we aren’t all like her and you are too without knowing it. Generally the patience groomers have is unmatched in basically any other industry. Every dog across our tables hates at least 1 of the many things we do in the process of grooming. This dog was initially showing an extreme likelihood for giving that groomer a serious bite that could be not only career ending but life altering. And if that would happened, the tides would turn and you would say she was pushing the dog too far when he was clearly uncomfortable.

    Honestly it doesn’t matter how young you start grooming with Shibas, they will still cry for everything.
    Any groomers handling Shibas should be paid more.

    • @m.bird.
      @m.bird. 3 года назад +2

      Mine don't cry if I'm there. I used gradual exposure and redirection. They need to make up their own mind, not be forced. Give them boundaries, but not too much training pressure at a time. Eventually they will tolerate most things without protest. And even cuddle! I groom them myself.
      My girl absolutely freaks out if she has to stay overnight or come out of anesthesia at the vet in a cage. They have to take her out to sit on a technician's lap or she will damage her mouth trying to escape. Poor girl. She is crate trained too, but being trapped without choices in a strange place is torture to her. I don't think it's dramatic. I think it's normal to have an existential crisis if you feel like you have no options.
