I’m glad you fixed the way you talked about the Akita! The Akita Inu is the original, where the American Akita is the new, different one. So it’s not “the akita” and “the japanese akita inu,” it’s the “the american akita” and “the akita inu” A lot of people mentioned that in the last akita vid, so it just goes to show that Animal Watch listens to its fans :)
Hi I'm only saying American Akita so my American audience understands.. It is still The Akita..not American Akita, but as 60% of my audience is USA viewers it's easier to say it this way. Sorry but The Akita came before 'The American Akita' 😘❤️🙏
Not really. There's far more to the History than this and as for the Japanese Akita Inu being the original then only by name because the Japanese Akita Inu now is a recreated breed. The lady doing the Video knows very little on the breed and how to act and interact with an aloof Guarding breed, Bad educational videos that lack the very basics and give the wrong idea.
I have had both of these. We had a japanese akita when I was a kid. Great dog, but always weary of strangers and protective. I have a shiba now and she is a cat.
I live with an Akita (Japanese) red and white...Musashi. He is the most kind and loving dog I ever lived with...So good and loving to my daughters and so protective to them...a true treasure to our house... Yes...they get sometimes really competitive and violent to other dogs...but if you pay attention to the dog and you soend time with them you get to know each other and as they grow up, they know what is expected from them... And...I love the way they are indipendent... And for sure if you are out at the ooen...you get a bit stressed to take him off leash...first...they have a great ability of smell and tracking down animals and odours...and...they tend to getting into trouble... although usually they make you get in trouble as they are fearsome fighters...oh well...fighting is in their nature....
@@shibainupuppypuppetinjapan2600 Yeah, they have life spans between 12-15 but if you take good care of them they can live longer, there was a shiba that lived 26 years.
When we traveled to Japan, they called them 'Shibaken', since as you mentioned 'Inu' just means dog. I have a 13 year old 'Shiba Inu', she has been a great dog with my kids and very gentle. Our Shiba LOVES her family and common visitors, but is suspicious of outsiders.
Yep, we don't say "Inu" because if talking about a compound noun the pronunciation modulates to "ken." Akita-ken, Shiba-ken, etc... Whereas Inu is just a standalone noun for dogs in general
@@potatoheadhaoy If I am not mistaken (Japanese beginner learner) this is because inu and ken are two different readings for the kanji 犬. So 柴犬 would be shibaken and 犬 would be inu. If I may ask you as a native speaker: How much does it bother you if Westeners pronounce inu like inyu instead of inu?
I’m Japanese. Majority of Japanese people actually think the same way as Dirk-san wrote above. But, believe it or not, the formal names of Shiba-ken and Akita-ken are Shiba-inu and Akita-inu respectively. And more surprisingly, other dogs are called -ken such as Kishu-ken, Kai-ken etc as the lady in this video pronounces. The reason is that 柴(shiba) and 秋田(Akita) are pronounced in kun’yomi which is Japanese original pronunciation (Yamato kotoba) so the following word, in this case 犬, is also pronounced in the same way, while Kishu, Kai and others are pronounced in on’yomi whis is Chinese-ish way of pronunciation. If the fomer word is pronounced in kun’yomi the latter word 犬 is also pronounced in kun’yomi as “inu” (not inyu btw), and the former word is in on’yomi the latter 犬 is also in on’yomi as “ken”. 1. kun’yomi + kun’yomi 2. on’yomi + on’yomi That being said, this rule is not 100% followed. There’re actually many exceptional words like kun + on or on + kun. 😅
@@サニーちゃん-x7l ありがとうございました。Thank you very much for this enlightening explanation. So it all comes down to the reading of the Kanjis for the respective dog breed. Very interesting! Thanks again! Japanese is such an exciting language. At times it is more complicated than one imagines - other times things are much simpler than one is used to in one's own language.
I have a Shiba named Cheddar and that little guy is the best thing that has ever happened to me. So intelligent. He loves me own his own time and when he’s had enough of something, he lets me know 😂 definitely became a lover of the breed. I want two more when I get my own home :)

They are beautiful, wonderful, smart, playful, willful, loving dogs that escape easily and have a very high prey drive. They also think anything they see belongs to them!😂
@@robertmason7553 Technically all Akitas are a hot mess of Western breeds and a lot of Tosa Inu mixed into the original Akita Matagi (a medium-sized breed very similar to the Kishu Ken) due to the popularity of dog fighting back in the day. So technically there is no such thing as a "pure" Akita. They were wiped out by cross breeding.
The Shiba−dog named Tama protected the bear and guarded the owner. It was a longtime ago. It’s a bronze statue at Niigata station in Japan 🇯🇵 Hachi is Akita−dog. Tama is Shiba−dog. Everyone, please remember 🐕🐕🐕
akitas are extremely clever. mine could unlock doors, and would run off (and return an hour later) if we didn't make the doors impossible to unlock from the inside. also, my mother would just tell them to "run to father", open the door, and they'd sprint straight down to the marina where my father was on his boat. every single time.
I don’t believe there is such a thing as “weak” owner. Shiba are very strong-willed indeed, and I respect that a lot. I always let mine do her thing and if I want something from her I’ll have something to give in return. Respect is mutual and when she needs to listen to me, she does ;)
@@jehanne_bivel I believe that recent studies deny the mantra that Dogs that live in families have a hierarchical way of socializing within their family. It seems that their relationships usually are more on an even playing field and there is generally respect or no respect and that is what I found with my own Shiba as well. He shows respect and sometimes he wants something else and we compromise and he understands. I don't get when people are so concerned with staying the 'alpha' that they only dominate and command their dog around and that does *not* work with shibas.
That movie wrecked me. I cried so hard, that I threw up. I can never watch it again, as it upset me so much. I was so mad at his wife for not taking him home and keeping him safe .
Absolutely love that video. Many videos give a false image of these breeds therefore most uninformed people think they are super cute cuddly dogs. It breaks my heart when people get a shiba or akita just because they look cute, but then struggle with bad behavior and end up giving them away. I have 2 shibas. One is a total loner, doesn’t like other dogs and people and doesn’t like to be petted but has a very calm personality. The other one is the total opposite. Very outgoing to other dogs and every person he mets and sometimes likes to be petted. But both definitely more like a cat then a dog 😅. Once settled in a family, they are very loving and loyal. Even tho sometimes it can be frustrating when they don’t listen 🥲 still can’t imagine my life without them they bring so much joy 🥰
I love Shibas and wish I could find a shiba rescue to adopt from. I personally love being out and about so I love having a dog who can just walk and walk. As always, absolutely love your videos.
I have two akitas. I bought them when they were newborns from Kenyama Kennels. They are now 11 years old. They get along fine with my yellow lab guide dog.
Oh wow, it was awesome to see the Kai Ken get a mention. I own the only Kai Ken in the U.K. currently and help run the breed club for the Nihon Ken. If you’re interested in doing a video on them we would love to work with you :)
That disclaimer in the beginning is depressing. Anneka never gives out wrong advice. She seems more professional like than any Animal Care worker I know.
We sheltered and later adopted a rescued puppy, we later learned that he is an Akita sheperd, and I have to admit I am still learning about Akitas everyday, so your video is a pure pleasure too watch.
Dig the video and all the information. The delivery is well done! Do you have any videos on the Shikoku? If not, can you please make one or a video on all six Japanese breeds?
just for info, the presentatress pronunces it "i-nyuu" イニュー but it shall be "i-nu" イヌ and "Chūbu" (中部 "central part") is not "chubbuu" チュッブー but "chuu-bu" チューブ I suppose it's hard for english speakers since they don't disinguish it, but in japanese that's different and the meaning changes too.
I have owned 2 Akitas. They were both fantastic dogs. I loved the fact they are fairly nonbarking. I knew that if they barked investigation was warranted. I love the Woo Woo Woo they produce when happy! Both of mine lived with other breeds of dogs all female. I prefer Female dogs. They lived with cat also. My second Akita would wag her tail at the cats and they would nap together on the same bed. On the negative side, shedding is extreme, but unlike other breeds it seems to shed in clumps and faster. I currently own a GSD both breeds are very intelligent and easy to house break. The GSD has way more energy and easier to train. Akitas will learn but sometimes it's on their schedule not yours. I love both breeds and plan to get another Akita when the GSD is no longer with us. Great video by the way!
Thanks for your video! My bella is a 15 year old Shiba and some of the things you talked about I've seen but never assumed on the breed thanks for the info!
Shiba it is💗 Love the lil foxy face. I’m more into big dogs but if I had to pick, the shiba is the cutie pie💗(agressive breeds make me anxious-I don’t wanna worry about them eating someone’s pet while walking..life is stressful enuff😂)
A really nice comparison of the two breeds. Have met both, the Akita is really impressive, could be a miniature bear, intelligent and strong. The smaller Shiba is fascinating, both in appearance and intelligent attitude, and in its hunting skills, like a canine bobcat, it’s on my list to make family someday and devote 100% attention to it’s training and socialization, sort of an extremely cute kinda beagle that screams instead of bugling. (I love beagles!) My husky would also wail loudly when being groomed. Dogs do have their strong dislikes and let you know about them. All the more reason to love them. A great video! I saved it for future reference. 👍🏻
The two pictures at 9:26 are good examples to tell the face of Akita Inu from that of Shiba Inu. Akita has a more round face than Shiba, has a shorter distance between the eyes than Shiba, and has less pointed ears than Shiba.
Annika, startling the difference between the Akita Inu and the American Akita. The head is so much beefier based on the introduction of other breeds. Great video.
Thank you for Capital Akita. I tell everyone that calls me about a puppy to watch this video. I have made this video apart of my Akita education to all my buyer. Thank you for doing such a wonderful and professional job explaining the breeds.
Excellent video, beautiful breeds and enjoyed learning about them and their differences. Hope you are planning or preparing segments on the other four Japanese breeds you mentioned. Would be interested in learning more about them as well.
I own a Shikoku. They are very rare and very few info about them are available outside of Japan. Would appreciate if you could consider doing an episode about them especially that they are the wolfiest among the Japanese breeds.
I would love to have a shiba. But akita’s are not aggressive, they are just dominant. A shiba can be off leash, you need to train them to choose you every single time in any situation. They are not for everyone, most people want a dog because they are going for looks.. We even pick our dogs because of their looks. Rather look into a breed, what does he need? Is his energy compatible with yours? Can you fit into HIS lifestyle? I hope people will think about this a lot.

I’m glad you fixed the way you talked about the Akita! The Akita Inu is the original, where the American Akita is the new, different one. So it’s not “the akita” and “the japanese akita inu,” it’s the “the american akita” and “the akita inu”
A lot of people mentioned that in the last akita vid, so it just goes to show that Animal Watch listens to its fans :)
Hi I'm only saying American Akita so my American audience understands.. It is still The Akita..not American Akita, but as 60% of my audience is USA viewers it's easier to say it this way. Sorry but The Akita came before 'The American Akita' 😘❤️🙏
@@Animal-Watch American Akitas are technically not even a purebred.
@@brasco8721 They are.
That's like saying Weimaraners are not a purebreed because they came from the Vizsla.
Not really.
There's far more to the History than this and as for the Japanese Akita Inu being the original then only by name because the Japanese Akita Inu now is a recreated breed.
The lady doing the Video knows very little on the breed and how to act and interact with an aloof Guarding breed,
Bad educational videos that lack the very basics and give the wrong idea.
I have had both of these. We had a japanese akita when I was a kid. Great dog, but always weary of strangers and protective. I have a shiba now and she is a cat.

"The Shiba can walk for hours"
Meanwhile we can find tons of videos on youtube of Shibas "no want walk"
Can and want seem to be very different words in the Shiba vocab haha
I live with an Akita (Japanese) red and white...Musashi. He is the most kind and loving dog I ever lived with...So good and loving to my daughters and so protective to them...a true treasure to our house...
Yes...they get sometimes really competitive and violent to other dogs...but if you pay attention to the dog and you soend time with them you get to know each other and as they grow up, they know what is expected from them...
And...I love the way they are indipendent...
And for sure if you are out at the ooen...you get a bit stressed to take him off leash...first...they have a great ability of smell and tracking down animals and odours...and...they tend to getting into trouble... although usually they make you get in trouble as they are fearsome fighters...oh well...fighting is in their nature....
this video is very accurate, as for my shiba shes a sleepy head but has a very stong will^^ shes 7 now and i love my little shiba princess :)

I have a Shiba Inu and he is amazing! Best dog I’ve ever owned! He is an escape artist though. 🤦🏻♀️
My Shiba (Esu) was a prolific escape artist. He was a frequent visitor with the town dog catcher.
Yep, we don't say "Inu" because if talking about a compound noun the pronunciation modulates to "ken."
Akita-ken, Shiba-ken, etc...
1. kun’yomi + kun’yomi
2. on’yomi + on’yomi
That being said, this rule is not 100% followed.
Main difference: Akita (Big Cheems)
Shiba (Small Cheems)
I have a Shiba named Cheddar and that little guy is the best thing that has ever happened to me. So intelligent. He loves me own his own time and when he’s had enough of something, he lets me know 😂 definitely became a lover of the breed. I want two more when I get my own home :)
It's two syllables: I + Nu.
Not In + Yu!
Very good.
indeed, I thought Akita in you lol
My ears bled for 10min 26sec. and weirdly enough not all Akitas are male.
Yea she is terrible at pronouncing these dogs names
She's from the UK so she has an accent
I have a 4 year old shiba that I raised and trained from 10 weeks and I can say that she was spot on with her review of shibas!! They are beautiful, wonderful, smart, playful, willful, loving dogs that escape easily and have a very high prey drive. They also think anything they see belongs to them!😂
I have an American Akita. I had no idea that they were a cross of an Akita Inu, German Shepherd & Toza. Thank you for that 🙏🏻
I heard there was more in them.
They were wiped out by cross breeding.

akitas are extremely clever. mine could unlock doors, and would run off (and return an hour later) if we didn't make the doors impossible to unlock from the inside. also, my mother would just tell them to "run to father", open the door, and they'd sprint straight down to the marina where my father was on his boat. every single time.

It's a smart precaution in a litigious world. I agree with you in that it shouldn't be necessary, but this is the internet and no one is perfect.
We sheltered and later adopted a rescued puppy, we later learned that he is an Akita sheperd, and I have to admit I am still learning about Akitas everyday, so your video is a pure pleasure too watch.
I’ve another episode coming out next week on the Akita x

Anneka: Today we are comparing the Akita _in you_ with the Shiba _in you_ .
Thankyou! First thing that I couldn't help but notice and get annoyed by. It's more like ee-nu not 'in you'.
We all have a Shiba in all of us!
just for info, the presentatress pronunces it "i-nyuu" イニュー but it shall be "i-nu" イヌ
and "Chūbu" (中部 "central part") is not "chubbuu" チュッブー but "chuu-bu" チューブ
I suppose it's hard for english speakers since they don't disinguish it, but in japanese that's different and the meaning changes too.
I love my American Akita, by far the best, most loyal & protective baby I've ever owned. My best friend ❤😊

Super informative. Both types are true beauties.
There’s always something new on this channel, like I never knew there was an Akita Inu
OMG 😳
Thankyou Bob for watching all my episodes
The two pictures at 9:26 are good examples to tell the face of Akita Inu from that of Shiba Inu.
Akita has a more round face than Shiba, has a shorter distance between the eyes than Shiba, and has less pointed ears than Shiba.

Great video and very accurate summary of the two breeds!

Took my little Shiba into the big dog area at the dog park to see if she would be more polite with much larger dogs. As I took her in the first gate she looked like she wasn’t even paying attention. As soon as I opened the second gate, she immediately ran towards the biggest dog there, a very large Newfie…. I decided her manners weren’t good enough to take in the big dog area either…..
