A quick note on our decks: while we didn't have any hard rules about what spells you could play as your commander, we did decide to focus on spells you can build around rather than just utility spells. Cards like Mana Geyser or Mana Drain would be busted as commanders, but probably wouldn't lead to the most interesting decks.
The best spells would be those that exile themselves to prevent abuse, since the player can just send it to the command zone instead. Something like Nexus of Fate would allow you to take so many extra turns, even if you can only use it every other turn with just dropping one land per turn without extra ramp or additional extra turn spells. TPro would raise the salt levels at the table to Dead Sea levels
I find it funny that richard complained that combo is "too easy" on the podcast when he just tutored for the infinite this game. Like yeah dude. Anything's easy when you cast Demonic and Entomb in the same game lmao.
this episode actually got recorded before the podcast they even mention the combo he used in the podcast that is one of the reason he did not like combos
It's funny how in the last podcast, Seth mentioned stopping to make deals for the littlest of things as a new year's resolution. At 12:55, we can clearly see what he meant LMAO
I may think the depletion lands are unplayable, but damn if I don't have to commend you guys for sticking to your guns. I suspect you're gonna discover they're awful, but props for committing to trying it out!
they are great if your color identity has white, and not green. In all other cases, they are indeed suboptimal. Phil has a good reason to play them, since he plays cards like Sand Scout that will benefit from a lower land count, or even graveyard recursion from white that brings back lands from the gy. However, I struggle to see how good it can be in a mono-red deck, a color that doesn't really have access to catch-up ramp except for a few very niche colorless cards, and can't really bring back land from the gy unless they are artifact lands Phil W, Tomer L
Resolutions broken, Richard getting away with it again…. Truly wonderful and thank you all ❤ I nominate Richard as the true Wizard of Oz, as they will never pay attention to the man behind the curtain pulling their strings :)
An idea for a future Commander Clash. One deck composed of cards from their own decade, so 1 deck with cards from the 90s, one from the 00s, one from 2010s and one from 2020s
When Seth popped off he tapped Richard's treasure map so at 28:15 he shouldn't have been able to use it. In fairness, when he said it Tomer said something so it was kinda hard to hear.
Inkshield in the command zone is super interesting, since obviously your opponents can see it from a mile away. If only Orzhov had more effects that force creature to attack you.
I feel like I've seen Richard's "I play red rituals and storm off with an empty board" finish 4 or 5 times this season. I hope he sticks to his new years resolution and a) stops playing these kind of finishers and b) starts playing budget cards (locking out cards like the Demonic Tutor he cast this game), I'm a bit over it Contrast that with what happened when Tomer "stormed off" (i.e., jank)
As someone who plays with an Extus deck that is essentially a legal sorcery to have as your commander, I appreciated this theme. I also run Blood for the Blood God! in my deck, so I am glad to see that card get the win!
This gives me a great idea for a rule-0 thing I'm gonna bring to my next commander night: Choose any instant or sorcery from your deck to be your Signature Spell like in Oathbreaker! No need to change cards around in the deck, simply move it from 99 to command zone. Would obv need to say that hard tutors are discouraged, but it seems like it could bring an interesting twist to commander I've really needed for a while.
As Rodrigo pointed out, Voidwalker only stops nontokens from dying. Furthermore, it only stops the opponents' stuff from dying, so itself also dies on that board, bringing up the total high enough to reduce Richard's commander to three mana
Just a note: Angels Grace doesn't stop loss of life, so while Phil technically can't lose the turn he played it, he would've lost as soon as Richard's turn ended.
Richard plays 6ish wipes, is a fog meta believer, & the table has to deal with Phil always jumping out to value leads so it’s genuinely hard to agro him out.
Richard missing the greatest 80's reference. @41:30 Seth: Can you dance this turn Tomer? Tomer : I can always dance when I want to. Richard: Patrick Swayze over here. I hope Tomer was referring to the song Safety Dance by Men without Hats. One of the best 80's songs of all time.
You need land recursion like brought back etc with depletion lands and a billion fetch lands. You'll always be able to ramp by recurring permanents cost 3 or less, no matter your color. Recurring a depletion land is awesome.
On this week of "Punt or Bluff?" Oathbreaker? What? Nevermind. Will Richard paint the table red or will everyone get lost in Phil's fog? Tune-in to find out!
Suspend is weird. Thief of Blood removes all counters from all permanents, but technically the suspend cards aren't permanents (they are chilling in exile until they come off suspend), so it doesn't do anything to them.
So, what is the status on Glasses of Urza? Did it turn out to be to strong for its own good? Richard only ran it once in his 5 decks that could run it.
Seth showed up with the one card that I can not believe was excluded from the main Set. This card screams Against the odds in 60 cards and it is not meant to be...
Am I missing and interaction? When Seth wrathed with Florida, all the doing creatures would be exiled by voidwalker, so blood for the blood god should have only been reduced by 1. Very possible I’m missing something though with editing.
Voidwalker only affects cards (and furthermore only the opponents' cards). Since tokens are technically not cards according to the rules, they still die with Voidwalker out. And of course Phil's own creatures (the voidwalker) still die.
We didn't have any hard rules, but we did try to focus on cards that you could build around rather than utility spells like Mana Drain. I think if you wanted to go as spike-y as possible Mana Drain would be busted.
Since Richard made the comment about it, are there any legendary instants? Is that even a thing? I guess it’s one google search away from me having the answer but to my knowledge I don’t think one exist, or at least I’ve never seen it, or heard about it. I guess like….. what’s the point right? Legend rule exists but it’s only relevant to on the field cards so like…. Why make an instant or sorcery legendary other than for flavor? Like maybe you could not cast two legendary instants of the same card on the stack together but I don’t see how the legend rule would apply this would just be adding the word for flavor would it not? I don’t hate the idea of seeing legendary on a non permanent spell but I don’t see why it would need to be a thing mechanically speaking
Hey MTG players, still new to this, but cannot make sense of what these guys refer to as "Fetch Lands" the ones were you play the land, pay 1 life and sacrifice it, then you get to search you deck for another land. Unless you are playing landfall, surely it just makes sense to run a basic land rather than a land that hurts you for what appears to be laughable utility. What am I missing?
Seth sort of spoiled this in a stream more than a month ago so I’ve been really looking forward to this. I was really hoping someone would play Portent of Calamity as their commander. I think that card is not getting the love it should from commander players so far. I’ve found the sweet spot to be about X is 8 to get the free cast in the decks I’ve run it in and then it basically reads 9cmc, draw 4 (or more) cards and play one for free. But you also get some deck filtering and thinning. I personally think it is way better than Dance With Calamity
Not entirely sure but I believe all the spells cast off of dance with calamity are cast simultaneously so I think the storm trigger will not count the other spells, only dance with calamity and everything cast before it.
Nope: "If you cast more than one of the exiled cards, you choose the order in which to cast them. A spell you cast this way can be the target of a later spell you cast this way."
Thats not how the stack works, nothing can happen simultaneously. If someone controls multiple things on the stack that were "at the same time" they get to choose in what order they resolve. There is never a scenario where multiple things resolve simultaneously and without passing priority.
Another week of Richard durdling and left to kill everyone after they blow each other up. At this point, either everyone other than Richard has that goldfish memory... or Richard is making them let him win. When someone does the same trick for years... you'd think someone would try something new. Fun decks, fun people. but completely boring and repetitive results.
Mana Geyser would have just gone basically infinite with itself - not actually infinite, but definitely enough. 😂
Yea, I did appreciate the lack of extra turn spells in the command zone
I Look forward to the goldfish videos every week thank you guys for always putting up consistent and entertaining content
Glad you enjoy them!
Agree, it's very fun seeing the crew challenge themselves and play the rounds!
We NEED more of this theme, building around wacky spells is far more interesting to me then whatever the last do-it-all legendary that got printed
“My depletion land is for my catch up ramp” in mono red has me dying 😂😂WHERE IS YOUR OJER AXONIL BROKE BOY
It's funny how in the last podcast, Seth mentioned stopping to make deals for the littlest of things as a new year's resolution.
At 12:55, we can clearly see what he meant LMAO
In my defense, we recorded this before new years (but I'll probably break the resolution anyway without thinking about it).
I thought of that right then too 😂
The invasion of XANAX is so hilarious
As soon as Seth said it, I headed straight to the comment section
A second week in a row where everyone ignores Richard and loses to him.
Another year*
Hard to focus your boss I guess
He was that scary this game tho. Everyone else was doing more. His commander lets him play at instant speed nicely too
I may think the depletion lands are unplayable, but damn if I don't have to commend you guys for sticking to your guns. I suspect you're gonna discover they're awful, but props for committing to trying it out!
It's fun tech in any deck that can proliferate, I just put the green and blue ones in new Zimone
they are great if your color identity has white, and not green. In all other cases, they are indeed suboptimal. Phil has a good reason to play them, since he plays cards like Sand Scout that will benefit from a lower land count, or even graveyard recursion from white that brings back lands from the gy. Phil W, Tomer L
They have their uses. I like them in decks with some 3-drop Commanders.
5 color Comman..spell: "BOOO SETH!"
"I'm playing battles..." "YAY SETH"
SO CONFLICTED!!! :p
I love when U bend the rules for content! Nice vid, thanks!
Resolutions broken, Richard getting away with it again…. Truly wonderful and thank you all ❤ I nominate Richard as the true Wizard of Oz, as they will never pay attention to the man behind the curtain pulling their strings :)

Worth noting, Richard ramped 3 lands with his 'Red Ramp package'. So not bad
I swear Seth plays 5 color every week with an odd theme 😂
Lucky Crim isn’t here to farm you with Cruel Ultimatum
Crim: And my commander is Force of Will.
Everyone else leaves the room...
Inkshield in the command zone is super interesting, since obviously your opponents can see it from a mile away. If only Orzhov had more effects that force creature to attack you.
What I wouldn’t have given to see Crim on for this week’s theme
48:19 Richard: “Nooo!” Phil: “yess” 😂
At 53:25 Richard brings out his base 10 scroll counter thing for counting mana. Does anyone know the name of it or where I can buy one?
I think that’s a life counter? Maybe try looking for mtg life counter wheel
d100 life counter
I feel like I've seen Richard's "I play red rituals and storm off with an empty board" finish 4 or 5 times this season.
I hope he sticks to his new years resolution and a) stops playing these kind of finishers and b) starts playing budget cards (locking out cards like the Demonic Tutor he cast this game), I'm a bit over it
Contrast that with what happened when Tomer "stormed off" (i.e., jank)
durdle, board wipe, durdle, board wipe, combo gets tiresome after the amount of times hes done it
When Richard casts Mana Geyser; I know he's gonna cook up a spicy victory condition the same turn.
I can't believe Richard is a Phyrexian Arena believer.
As someone who plays with an Extus deck that is essentially a legal sorcery to have as your commander, I appreciated this theme. I also run Blood for the Blood God! in my deck, so I am glad to see that card get the win!
The punchline of Seth's intro cracked me up way more than I am willing to admit.
This gives me a great idea for a rule-0 thing I'm gonna bring to my next commander night:
Choose any instant or sorcery from your deck to be your Signature Spell like in Oathbreaker!
No need to change cards around in the deck, simply move it from 99 to command zone. Would obv need to say that hard tutors are discouraged, but it seems like it could bring an interesting twist to commander I've really needed for a while.
Richard shouldn't have been able to cast his commander that first time because of Dauthi Voidwalker. The creatures didn't die, they went into exile
Voidwalker only cares if a CARD is going to the graveyard. Tokens still have death triggers because they are not cards
As Rodrigo pointed out, Voidwalker only stops nontokens from dying. Furthermore, it only stops the opponents' stuff from dying, so itself also dies on that board, bringing up the total high enough to reduce Richard's commander to three mana
Phil, aka "Brewers "Caretaker's Talent" Kitchen
Ah, lore-accurate Khornate berserker... aside from the "too much math" comment. ;)
Just a note: Angels Grace doesn't stop loss of life, so while Phil technically can't lose the turn he played it, he would've lost as soon as Richard's turn ended.
Wonderful threat assessment from Richard this game 😢 I'm surprised Tomer doesn't aggro him out more often
Richard plays 6ish wipes, is a fog meta believer, & the table has to deal with Phil always jumping out to value leads so it’s genuinely hard to agro him out.
Richard missing the greatest 80's reference. @41:30
Seth: Can you dance this turn Tomer?

Richard: Patrick Swayze over here.

As soon as Seth said "I guess I'm trying to" I cringed because I knew what he was going to say lol Love watching you guys
Poor Tomer. The theme of gaslighting him continues.
Tomer casually untapping the stunned treasure map...
Dance With Calamity is one of my favorite cards!
Whats funny is this is very close to Oathbreaker. Have you guys considered doing that for an episode yet? I havent looked in the backlog
This weeks Commander clash is already over😢 looking forward to next week!
9:45 I'm glad to see Richard put his money where his mouth is on this red ramp package he was talking about a couple weeks ago.
This was really cool! I wonder what rules you would need to make this an actual fair format in terms of commander cardpool.
Richard!!!! Khorne will send Ka'Bandha to collect your skull for mispelling his name!!!
Also, great game. Really funny to watch.
Wouldn't be a game of Commander Clash unless Phil makes a token copy of Caretaker's Talent 😂
Does that black creature Seth cast not hit the wheel of fate suspend counters?
Suspend is weird. Thief of Blood removes all counters from all permanents, but technically the suspend cards aren't permanents (they are chilling in exile until they come off suspend), so it doesn't do anything to them.
55:38 Nice, Sorin Wooltrader the hot new combo machine from MH3
When I read the title, I thought you guys were playing legendary spells😅
I can't wait for Richard to lose to Inkshield and move the goalposts because "it's only good if it's in your command zone."
Richard should run Hexmage, Dark Depths as a package just so we have the chance to see him blow up those bounce lands
Phil do you know there's a retro frame Esper Sentinel now? 👀
Y'all wild for this one
Richard for the WIN!!
So, what is the status on Glasses of Urza? Did it turn out to be to strong for its own good? Richard only ran it once in his 5 decks that could run it.
holy moly seth has the most extreme case of "youtube voice" i've ever heard
Seth showed up with the one card that I can not believe was excluded from the main Set. This card screams Against the odds in 60 cards and it is not meant to be...
i’m surprised nobody played mono white this week
I love the Schwarzer Ritus arts! I might need to import a German card.
I thought dauthi voidwalker prevents the deaths from mass removal and exiles them all instead?
So wasnt Richards BftBG not reduced because dauthi stopped things from dying?
Voidwalker only cares if a CARD is going to the graveyard. Tokens still have death triggers because they are not cards
Mono-white Approach of the Second Sun
Tomer in mono red. Does this mean Ruination, Blood Moon, and Price of ?
"Red is the worst color", Proceeds to win... xd
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD
So fun fact creatures are spells so that’s that
🤓
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
Earthquake with Artist talent lvl2 = dead bowmasters
What was the requirements for the commander spell? I'm assuming you weren't allowed to pick something like mana drain
We didn't have any hard rules, but we did try to focus on cards that you could build around rather than utility spells like Mana Drain. I think if you wanted to go as spike-y as possible Mana Drain would be busted.
@@MTGGoldfishCommander Someone should have pretended Farewell was their Commander
Force of will in the command zone thoights
Phil is the best!
noone took the mickey and played extus backwards :(
Seth you should have destroyed Phil's court instead of the Archway
Impending Flux should have destroyed all creatures idk if that ends up mattering

Isildur's Fateful Strike
It was from dominaria and you could only cast a legend spell if you had a legend in play
There are a handful from Dominaria, but they way they work is you need to have a legend in play to cast them.
@@MTGGoldfishCommander thanks!
@@Lazydino59 didn’t know this thanks!
0:53 Seth, Seth, Seth 🤦♂️😂
Im disappointed no one had farewell as their commander.
Does anyone else prefer all face up perspectives for webcam commander?
I'm not used to that new layout
My commander would be Armageddon

Nice of them to ban open the way.

Im more surprised that none of you guys picked open the way as your commander. I’d expect seth to just cast it all game.
invasion of xanax lol
I mean if you're gonna go fog meta you should be in selesnya lets be real
