Just wish they would have arrived on time so we could have a full battle in the allotted time but unforeseen issues with their bus company had them arrive late. Either way, we both sound good. However minor mistakes on MMB side with tubas and drums not keeping tempo, and I don’t know what that was when they moved to one side of the band, base line got all garbled, trumpets hanging over to long on wrong notes. French horns coming in at the wrong times really hurt them. Now we made mistakes too but they were not that noticeable. Our tempo slow down on Careful but we quickly fixed where it’s barely noticeable. We were clean and precise otherwise. Not to discredit MMB but they were nowhere near flawless or what A Top Tier Band should be as they claim.

From a former band member GA band sounds they were battling each to see who can play the loudest which doesn’t mean your better MA sounded well blended and loud and crisp with smaller numbers was very impressive!
MMB had something to prove this year. Proud of both. I like the setup from MMB with the Euphos in the back since they over power the Trombomes. Cookman did the same setup when they switched from Btones to Euphos. Wish more bands would consider the setup. Southern would've benefited from it in '22.
MMB came out the gate swing with the Bob Marley Tribute. I think that arrangement was better than FAMU old arrangement. They killed that along with I Want You. They definitely shocked me with this battle. GAMB got my attention with that Under The Moon though. That arrangement with those cord structures was crazy along with that key change was vicious! However, I thought MMB had more wild factors and better song selection. I think GAMB underestimated MMB and got caught lacking! MMB for the win.

GAMB sounds like 2021 Jackson, Memphis sounds like 07-12 JSU. At the end of the day both bands sounded good but Memphis just had a way better book & played they cards right. Just keeping it real

Balance shouldn't be sacrificed for volume. A controlled sound is much more impressive than loud noise. Power comes automatically with dynamic control which ga had much more of.

Phenomenal footage A1. Audio and Video 🔥🔥🔥 Memphis was more balanced and cleaner. GA is so big that at times it’s hard to hear what’s going on in some sections and either those sections are not playing full, possibly don’t know the music in those measures of the song and or the sections are covering each other up with a bit too much volume at those times. Overall is was a great battle by both groups.

Memphis really caught me off guard and had a pretty big lead over Atlanta for most of the battle until their flub in single for the night. Which is crazy because they played it fine in their showcase last week. GAMB has major blending issues. Being there in person their sound was not blended at all. Each brass section trying to outplay each other and the arrangements are generic and basic this year. With minimal dynamics. Last year’s version of GAMB would’ve ran a clinic on this years version. Bigger doesn’t always = better MMB if your trumpets are going to “kiss off” those notes at the end of the song at least have the trumpets cut off as a group… the hanging over was 🤢 I will say that reverb from GAMB when they turned to play at MMB was pretty crazy in person. It sounded like there was another band playing back at them.

This was a great battle. I was a little surprised about the song selection from GAMB, hoping to hear more instrumentation and color in the arrangements. But, as usual, balance and clarity was their greatest advantage. Memphis is crazy powerful (especially the mellos) but most of their songs are written in unison, which helps with the power, and they aren't as clean. It's apparent when listening with 🎧. It's a tie for me.
Both are on 🔥 for the stand band culture. GAMB trombones need to work on matching each other for harmony. Tone wins. Memphis bones need more presence on all chords throughout their book because those btones-euphonium standing over them is like Hulk punching Loki.
gamb was a clear winner last summer which then mean everyone is gonna come for they head! So they gottta come even harder than last year because everyone stepping they game up
Overall Memphis won!!! My breakdown: Round 1 - GAMB won - Power, clarity and execution were better. The Marley did not fit the style and sound of this year’s version of MMB. Round 2 - MMB won- ENERGY!!! I love when the band sound matches the conductor’s energy!!! Execution was 🔥🔥🔥 It did not sound like GAMB took this round seriously and got owned Round 3 - MMB won- Way to bring the spirit of Janelle Monae to life!!! Arrangement was RIDICULOUS. At times, the group allowed their excitement to take over the cleanliness but in summer band I actually enjoy that very much. GA Muscle had no answer for this instant classic. Another round that lacks energy for this to be their house. Round 4 - Memphis won. They SMACKED the Marvin Gaye! Most groups would not be able to maintain the spirit and energy of this legendary icon but they did it with EASE. The answer from GA was good but still lacks energy. Yes tone is important, but these arrangements did not do anything to highlight the superior tone qualities of these musicians. There was an aggression last year that is missing this year. Round 5 - GAMB won. They are finally giving some energy. Everything should have had this quality and feel. Round 6 - MMB won! Classic summer band vibe that really fits the Under the Influence song. Round 7 - MMB WON! That NBA gon hit every time!!! ENERGY! It had more moving lines than GA’s Careful, which is to be commended.

Memphis sounds good , BUT gamb arrangements plus over all balance &power . Memphis need some more tuba's . Brass burying them space them out more or get deeper
