I was obsessed with these cinematics as a kid. I remember my friend telling me all about the Kodiak mech and how beefy it is, and being so excited to see it in this opening. We used to play Mech Warrior on the playground field, running around with our arms bent at 90 angles like mechs.
Next time I walk around the mall with my wife I'm going to play as a Kodiak with my arms bent at 90 degrees while making pew pew and boom boom noises. She will enjoy herself.
Lol, well if you brush up on Clanner society you'd know this. But obviously the people who did the voice recordings for these games didn't get the memo about Clanners not using contractions.
My 'Mech of choice was an Executioner with dual PPCs in one arm, an Ultra Autocannon-20 in the other, and an anti-missile system. Saw that configuration in one of the novels and it was devastating.
On tabletob you could probably make that config if you remove some of the excess heat sinks on the gladiator and reduce it to the base 15 on the chassis. Might run hot but it’s a scary one no doubt.
Seeing this clip again really brings back the memories of the good ol' days in the 90s when I loved playing MechWarrior on my crappy old PC! Wish I could play again, but, ever since I had a brain tumor the size of a lrg. orange behind my rt. eye that caused a stroke which paralyzed the left side of my body back in 1996, I haven't been able to properly enjoy any computer games that require having both hands at 100% ;-(
+JarnBjorn72 Aw man.... I'm so sorry man. I just hope you can at least enjoy watching others play. I hope in the future you'll be able to play games again.
They even had the voice actors use clan words like "quiaff," "aff," and "neg." So to be "correct," the voice actors would not have used contractions if the pilot was in a frontline 'Mech. Like I said, they almost got this right, there's only one contraction in the entire video. When the Mad Dog pilot says: "Nothin' on scope.." that's an aesthetic thing, he should have pronounced the whole word, but I digress.
The Clans did eventually join Devlin Stone's coalition and helped destroy the WoB. The Ghost Bears absolutely mauled a few units, saved the Combine's ass and took out an entire Shadow Division. The Council of Six, which included Warden and Crusade alike (Crusader Wolves, Jade Falcons, Diamond Sharks, Snow Ravens, Ghost Bears and Hell's Horses) provided key warship support and helped retake a good portion of the Sol system.
In MW4 the Kodiak is often used as a missile boat. It got jets, wich means it can jump out of hill cover briefly to unload its salvo. Also its got a ECM, making it quite steathy to radar. And when i am talking missiles i mean triple Cluster Arrow IV, thats artellery missiles. Its formidable, and earned the nickname: "the plague". It has a terrible punch and AMS won't help you against missiles of that size. It had an armor bug exchanging front and rear armor, wich sucked. But that got fixed.
Obligatory Remembrance quote: None stronger, none more fearless Than the Ghost Bear. None can hold against him. What we know to be true: The Ghost Bear conquers all.
I wonder why did we never get an introduction to Clan Ghost Bear, like how we had the movies introducing Clans Wolf and Jade Falcon in 31st Century Combat.
@Specter86 Actually, "MechWarrior" was the name of the roleplaying game that grew out of BattleTech, and which used BT as the combat engine. The computer game is an adaptation of MW. They all exist within the BattleTech universe.
***** I feel I should finally explain what meant by my last comment - Since the beginning of the Clans, Clan Snow Raven monopolised a vast majority of worships, frigates, cruisers etc etera, while all the other Clans focus on Armour or BttleMerch manufacturing so when the war of 3050 began against the Inner Sphere, a lot of Clans had no option but to use the Clan Snow Raven transport, because all the other Clans just did not have the Naval ships to be able to transport their invavson force into the Inner Sphere.
+harkeill wow, thanks for the history lesson. Moral of the story: if you're gonna make a bunch of walking tanks, be sure and ask the question "how are we actually getting these to the enemy?"
I’m new to the mech warrior/battletech series but what does contraction mean? I can’t really get a solid answer online (yes I know this comment is old, I’m really curious)
K1LLAGHOST A contraction is a shortening of a phrase, usually for convenience's sake. Example: Instead of saying "I am going to take a shower," I could say "I'm going to take a shower." This is a little smoother, quicker, and, in today's culture, sounds proper, whereas the full form sounds oddly formal in normal speech. An exception to the "oddly formal" idea would be when someone is angry or upset, in which case it is common to lengthen the utterance in order to more fully express the emotion: "YOU ARE *NOT* GOING TO THE DANCE WITH HER!" In the video, the Smoke Jaguar pilot says "Jag Base, this is Jag 12, I'm approaching the reported radar signature," which goes against the Clan cultural practice of never using contractions. According to the lore, he should have said "I am approaching the reported radar signature." May I ask your native language?
@@CodeineRadick While Melee is sort of frowned upon by the Clans it's not uncommon......there's a reason Kodiaks have those claws. The bigger issue is among the Clans it's seen as VERY Taboo to aim for a cockpit on purpose......and DFA is doing just that...
As far as I know, the video shows how Clan Ghost Bear idolizes the "Ghost Bear" that hunts it's prey this way, by hiding in the snow to pounce on prey animals unlucky enough to wander too close, yes. ;-)
@Ironeagle 777 The mech is effectively shut down, and radar is passive, so there is no "Ping" in the books a hot start up is entirely possible for ambushes like this. The Mad Dog pilot suddenly had the radar signiture because the Kodiak Pilot was powering up because the trap was sprung.
Ditto, Maddog/Vulture and the Timberwolf/Madcat was pretty versatile, and the Madcat Mk II used in MW4 with the extra beefed up armor/weps was nice too. The Bushwacker was fun too., with the AC it packed! Wish they'd make MW5 already....
You have to purchase the Clan Pak seperately from MW4 to get the Kodiak. It was my favorite Mech to jump and snipe with in multiplayer. The Inner Sphere Pak was worth getting too, because it contained the Heavy Gauss Rifle.
Although I have since hung up my neural helmet and place my CRB-27 Crab (aka Sakuya's Ice) into mothballs, this still gets the adrenaline flowing from my days as a Capellan citizen on the battlefield. Alas, after more than twenty years, I have decided to leave the battlefield for the younger generation to prove their worth. I am happy enough as a training instructor for the future Capellans to prove they have what it takes to become citizens and serve the Great Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao.
obviously the creators wanted to illustrate DFA on this vid but your right, the correct strategy with the mad dog is hit and run with its long range weapons... expecially going againts with the Kodiak, the only long range weapon it has on its standard loadout is the Large Laser.
@Dumpstermuffin1 it all depends on what your definition of 'powerful' is. Clan Ghost Bear could have had the superiority on the field of battle with its 'mechs, but Clan Snow Raven ruled the skies with their domination over Clan warships.
Autocannon made short work of that appendage. Boy I used to love this game! I outfitted my Warhammer with 4 PPCs. You needed extra heat sinks tho or it would explode after three simultaneous blasts. :-D
I did something similar with a Timberwolf. It was only good for the snowy climate of GBL because evven with extra heatsinks and cycling, the friggin arm would melt off. Could drop an assault lance single handedly though if done correctly.
Is there a 95 tons mech in this game? a 95 ton mech can have 4 PPCs and enough heat sinks to keep on firing those PPCs non stop without the fear of shutting down if you know how to build them and they move faster then a fully deck out 100 ton mech. Mech like Executioner/Gladiator.
Two great mechs fighting, unfortunately for one the other is basically the clan version of the Atlas, which even into the IL Clan era is one of the most feared mechs on the battlefield.
8 tomahawk on a stone rhino all shot at one on a cluster of ennemy at long range lock. 1 shut down 30 secs of radio static from massive explosion (EMP) Then once back online, no more ennemies on long ranged radar. He's yelling "FREEBIRTH!" insulting the Kodiak pilot. In certain factions of the Mechwarrior universe the warrior elite are all created artificially, and people who are born naturally are considered unclean and inferior. Battletech/Mechwarrior had a pretty rich cultural back story.
It seems games have shifted from the oldschool brand of mechwarrior, under a killing moon, wing commander, etc - to games that sacrifice rich and innovative plotline for innovative and rich gameplay dynamics and graphics, which is a shame since both would be nice.
Yup, they might not be so good for fast in/out incursions but would you want to assault anything that's being guarded a couple of them? The addition of jumpjets to the Kodiak 2 (or a custom) variant makes DFA a fitting maneuver for them.
