  • A short showcase of all the major iterations in the MechWarrior series, alongside their respective soundtracks. I would have included expansion packs but I don't own the ones for MechWarrior 2, and the gameplay is all me.
    I also accidentally left the mumble overlay enabled while playing MWO, oh well.

      @TheVoiceOfTruth That was the story though. There always needs to be some type of "gate" to the good tech from the start. I could be remembering wrong, but the premise should be about right. In 3 you were part of an invasion force that got bad intel and got ambushed. All you have is what you crash landed with and you need to capture enemy supplies to replenish and strengthen your own while still attempting to complete your original mission basically blind. Pretty much the same idea in 4 but with a bit of a longer story attached to it that just made sense for those games.
      Same for MW2:Mercs, except instead of capturing enemy tech, you just salvaged and bought better tech as you progressed. You were still "gated" from the good tech/weapons/mechs until you earned it by whatever means the designers put in. Basically the same for almost all the games out there lol. With the exception of MW:Online, but even that has those elements to it.
      MW2:Mercs holds a personal spot in my heart due to nostalgia, absolutely loved that game as a kid. I was blown away by 3, it was way ahead of it's time, really wish I could play 3 again reliably. And 4 was just really, really fun and I will still replay it again every now and then. MW:Online was boring for me, never played it for more than a couple weeks. BattleTech by HBS is freaking amazing, but can get boring late game or after the main campaign unless you start modding.
      MW5:Mercs...well...screw Epic Games and screw Piranha Games too for releasing it there, and even if the game eventually releases on Steam, still not sure if I'm going to buy it. Depends really on the modding community and how far modding can improve the game. Original MW and all the mechwarrior games on nes/snes were more like arcade games, played them here and there, but they were pretty meh. Never got into the MechCommander series either, probably good games, but I wouldn't know, never have and probably never will play them at this point lol.

    Ah, yes, I remember playing some of these games. Great memories. Played MW1 with a friend of mine back in 1989/'90. The Gravis Xterminator was an excellent controller for MechWarrior. It had a throttle control, a hat switch for different views, shoulder buttons for torso twisting and an analog stick for moving around. It of course had plenty of buttons and a D-pad for fire groups and other functions.

    The gigantic leap between MW1 and MW2 was really impressive.

    It would be cool if they redid Mw3 and Mw4 (with all the addons) with new graphics. They great games and I believe a lot of people would play them. These games are much better than CoD, Battlefield, or even Team Fortress 2.

    • @lumpy1space2princess
      @lumpy1space2princess 10 лет назад +11

      That would be amazing! But, they aren't in the same genre as modern fps. The mw franchise is a much more slower paced game. One cannot simply stand in a corner and wait for some sorry fuck to walk by and kill him in one hit. Nope, instead, one must follow a VERY specific role, and rely on his/her teammates to cover his/her weaknesses.
      For example:
      One using a close range build must rely on long range missle spammers or "archers"/ long ranged snipers "riflemen" to keep the enemies heads low, so the brawler can get to the enemy. And the riflemen/archers rely on a scout to spot targets. Scouts and strikers (assasin mechs) rely on brawlers to keep the enemy distracted. Everyone in the game relies on eachother to win.

      Really stupid comparison, if you wanted a really rough but fairer comparison you'd compare it to tactical shooters.
      I can see a comparison between tactical infantry games or arcade mech games to tactical mech games, but to deviate from both descriptions is again, really stupid. They're completely different.

    • @lumpy1space2princess

  • @rudyschmidt6799
    @rudyschmidt6799 9 лет назад +14

    MechWarrior 4 was a step back from the excellence of MechWarrior 3...MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries had some of the best missions though, including fighting on top of an ice-transport ship in space, where you could jumpjet into another mech and send them hurtling into the void. Also, running your own mercenary company and having to pay for everything yourself was awesome as you were always trying to scrape together some extra cash...MechWarrior 3 had the best feeling of scale, especially when you could walk over someone on the ground and crush them (unlike in 4 where the people on the ground were sprites, and it felt like the tanks were toy cars rather than simply seeming small because you were in a towering mech, instead it felt like mechs were the normal size of a human and everything else was tiny), and 3 felt the best gameplay wise. I especially liked being able to aim the guns with the mouse independently of the torso, and the HUD was better.

    • @Trueflights
      @Trueflights 8 лет назад

      +Lighton Junior Agreed. Vengeance was a step in the wrong direction, but Mercs redeemed the franchise after that. Even more so when you add in all of the custom work that Mektek added to that game over the years for free.

      Mw2 and Mw3 were back in the day when games manufacturers put effort into their games, knowing full well that a solid game would earn them money..... I even liked the Mechcommander game which never really took off.
      Sadly the last few years have seen a huge shift over to fast fire console titles which have far less thought and effort put into them...... the game producers seem to be all aiming towards producing the next title to be as mindlessly popular as Call of Duty, and nothing more. Sad really

      Finally someone putting out the truth:
      MW4 is overrated and probably one of the weakest of the franchise, yes, including Mercs (4)
      I think it's the engine, the animations, the scale, the shitty slapped together cockpit view, terrible textures, sounds and lightning for the most part is what kills the mood and feel of MW4, it's got everything a MW game needs in theory but in practice it just feels... shit.

The one thing I noticed and it bothers me to no end is the power of the light mechs these days. On MW2, if you tried mounting heavy firepower like ER PPCs or ER Large Lasers, you'd get off one shot maybe two before overheating. Nowadays, they can take out the heaviest of mechs. jamie kennedy To be fair, the first mechs in MWO were almost exclusively the ones that come with the BattleTech box set (which has just been reprinted). From there, they've pretty much been adding mechs from the 3039 Technical readout. So, if anything they're more original than the original video games.

      Yes, I knew Betty was brought back (That was a pretty badass surprise I must admit) however, I refuse to rate a game on voice acting alone, no matter how good or bad it is.
      Also, MWLL was THE BIGGEST Battletech multiplayer game of its time featuring mechs (duh), power armor, tanks, planes, and all of them were player controlled. It was also done using the Cry engine because it ran off Crysis Wars. Seriously, look it up.

      Steven Knowles Tell me about it. I really wanted to see the Mad Cat (I'm an Inner Sphere scrub, sue me) because the Mad Cat is pretty much the icon of Mechwarrior (you can say it's the Atlas but most of the Mechwarrior games had the Mad Cat featured prominently and used it as their logo), but then I found out I have to pay something like 50-210 dollars for it?! What kind of BS is that?
      NobleSeraphim I was really missing all the ER Medium lasers (those were my go-to weapons for MW3 because they had about the same range as a Large but weighed less and made less heat), the LB-20-X ACs...
      What makes MWO worse is that they said they were going to go with a 1:1 scale timeline of release for mechs, meaning if a mech came out a year after the time the game is "set" in, we'd have to wait a real-life year for the mech in the game. MWO features the Centurion Omnimech but leaves out the Avatar Omnimech?! How long will I have to wait for that one?!

    • @meanguy1243
      @meanguy1243 9 лет назад +1

      TankCommander451 Centurion Omnimech? Surely you mean Battlemech. The Omnimech doesn't come out until 3111. Also, the Mad Cat is now available for C-Bills, so in a word it's now 'free' of paying real money for it.

    Mechwarrior Online is great stuff. It's wonderfully done, and PGI is putting a lot of effort into a game. I can bet it's pretty hard to develop a game when half of it's fanbase are a bunch of nostalgia-glasses-wearing pansies. I like the direction of the development. I love how people complain about paying money for a free game, as if the developers are just supposed to let everyone be able to get everything for free. The clan stuff is free now, all you need to do is pay Cbills.

    • @MadKiyos
      @MadKiyos 9 лет назад +8

      My problem is not the payments, not the "umgg they changed that laser a ltttlee bit its not lore!!1", but their productivity.
      I among many have noticed, and even some respectable critics like sidestrafe have noticed, that the map development and performance quality is needs a lot of attention.
      Props are recycled, the colors are bland, and some maps give one team a critical disadvantage.
      Now, the most compelling thing to me is the HUD. I usually get around 30 fps on a good amount of maps. I turn the HUD off and my framerate increases dramatically. Why? It's just a heads-up display, how could that possibly take half of my potential performance?
      Many people don't know why they claim MW:O is bad, but these are points I happen to agree on.

      I don't like the balance choices that to stop boating is to implement Ghost Heat. They should just go back to the classic 30 point heat scale, make Double Heat Sinks dissipate Double the heat (not have double the heat capacity), etc.
      Clan weaponry being nerfed (like doubling the burn time of lasers) without the ability to modify base chassis attributes like the Engine completely misses the point of them being OMNIMechs, they're supposed to have superior weapons and mounting ability while the Inner Sphere eventually will get OmniMechs of their own (Black Hawk-KU, Owens, Strider, Avatar, Sunder, BlackJack-Omni) and be able to use both omnipod technology with specialized weaponry like Rotary Autocannons, MRMs, X-Pulse Lasers, T-Bolt Launchers, Inferno Rockets, Light and Heavy Gauss rifles, Hypervelocity Autocannons.
      It's also the fact that the animations aren't convincing to me. 'Mechs like the Raven or Mad Cat never run even though they did in the rest of the games. The cockpit bob is a generic back-and-forth movement with no difference on torso twist and Head location (like the Thor's cockpit should be bobbing asymmetrically) and your viewpoint is just suspended in midair, never bobbing around.
      MechWarrior: Living Legends 'Mech animations may look a little stiff but that makes sense in an in-universe perspective, you want to keep the MechWarrior inside as stable as possible to make accurate shots and the cockpit movement looks a lot more heavy and great.

      the good news is MWO is finally adding some of those weapons, oddly in the upcoming Civil War update, i think clan tech gets the short end of the stick for new weapons, the only real new things they get are Heavy Lasers and ATM missiles which seem like their gonna be a bit too technical for alot ofp eople since their damage will be based on travel distance, not sure if that means their gonna be like LBX ACs aka "closer is better" or something like "farther is better"
      but IS on the other hand gets the full range of LBX and Ultra ACs, Rotary ACs, Heavy and Light Gauss, Light PPC AND Snub-Nose PPC (and 1 other i beleive) and of course MRMs, Rocket Launchers, a new Stealth Armor which has benefits aimed at units that can use ECM...and other stuff i cant remember
      basically IS gets a huge boost in weapon variety with this update, clan not so much, but heavy lasers could very well be VERY scary to fight

    Living Legends
    3:40 Missile smoke trails
    3:57 Lighting effects
    4:03 That little bit of blurring in daylight
    4:06 Better animations, specifically the jumping with JJs
    4:10 Actually seeing in the pilot perspective when your mech goes down
    *and overall the faster paced gameplay
    MWO
    Sparks
    Lazors
    PPC projectile
    HUD
    Weapon Hit effects
    anything I missed? overall PGI could probably still improve MWO i just hope that they actually consider it
