It's strange how fast this all came back to me. It has been over 20 years since I played this game, but the music of the intro alone was enough to have me speaking right along with it. "HQ, this is Alpha Assault, I'm on my way..."
I should remember this line at work. Well done welp. You have successfully displayed the ability to do what I tell you to do. I like that. My dog does what I tell it to do. I like my dog. I should introduce you to each other. Remind me to do that.
This brings back so many memories! I can't remember which mission it was, but there was a very difficult one (one of the later missions, I guess) that I couldn't quite beat. I tried over and over. Finally, I played it and defeated all of the enemies and survived! Unfortunately, one of my legs had been blown off and I didn't have jump jets, this wouldn't have been a problem, but I had to reach an end point to complete the mission. In frustration, I swing my joystick back and forth a few times... I noticed that this caused the mech to lurch forward slightly. Excited, and with desperate hope, I continued to swing the joystick back and forth over and over again for about 20 minutes. I finally limped into the ending zone (whatever it was) and got the mission successful notification! I was so happy! Seriously, this was a great game, possibly the best of the Battletech/Mechwarrior series that I've played. I think my favorite was the Timber Wolf, and I would customize its weapons to have a bunch of LRM-5s and some medium pulses. The lock-on feature of the LRMs in this game was spot on, and much better than later games (in which it was nearly impossible to get a lock). Ah, nostalgia!
If I had to guess, it probably would have been the mission on Zoetemeer where you had to inspect/destroy the cryo plasma converter. That one was a bitch to do legit.
Oh man I used to love playing this game at my grandparents' house, grandpa loved computer games. But, I was a stupid kid and constantly died. It was just run to run around the field. I remember thinking that the graphics were SO cool.
Mailman2310 At least you tried. I believe you had one cool grandfather. My grandfather was always busy with Mowing the Back Lawn, or things in his office. I had to find ways to keep myself occupied for fun. Don't get me wrong though we both did. When I was a young boy, he was fond of me. He'd always smile real big and say, "Come over 'ere, and sit on your ol' Papaw's Lap." When Mom was there with us it kinda made her laugh. He'd even tell me some Salty Jokes over the Phone. He first told me about a story about his involvement with the Wampas Cat. He was telling me they all lived in an old cabin when he was little. Thunder was clapping outside when they all started hearing something cluttering around in the Attic. Soon enough they were hearing it again. And the Window was open. He said to them he heard something outside the window. An older man in the family grinned and said, "How about taking a look out the Window?" Well, when he did, he didn't see anything. But then something grabbed a tuft of his hair and like to pulled it out. Anyways, Papaw pulled his head back in the Cabin and shut the Window as fast as he could. He then said, "So, with that story told, do you know what a Wampas Cat is?" I was like, "Nah. What is a Wampas Cat?" He said "Right now you're too young to know." I kinda thought he was pulling my leg. He said, "Tell you what, I'll tell you sometime when you're older." I agreed. He eventually called mom and talked with her a bit years later, he ended up wanting to talk to me after that. He asked me how old I was. and I told him. And he said, "Remember I was gonna tell you what a Wampas Cat is?" And I was like "Yep I remember." He said now that you're old enough, I'll tell you. You ready?" I said "Sure papaw." He said, "It's a Black Cat with a White Ass!" I heard his wife yell out "Bill, don't tell him that!" He was Laughing out loud. Boy I was also. I also remember Mom was on the Phone with him. An outside Cat we tamed, and named Buster was clawing up the Place Mat where we'd wipe the mud from our shoes. She said hold that thought a second or two, the cat outside is sharpening his claws on the place mat." She yelled at the door, "Buster! Quit that!" And her dad said when she put the Phone back to her face, Papaw said , "Listen, Listen! Cat's a Pissin'!" Mom burst into laughter saying, "DAD!" Gosh, Papaw was so funny! LOL!
The part where he said "congratulations mech warrior" was so satisfying because he constantly insults you the entire time and you finally gain his acceptance in the end.

Great memories. I've played every Mechwarrior including the OG Battletech on my Commodore 128D I bought in the Nuremberg PX while I was stationed in Erlangen West Germany back in late 80s.
The visual coordinator for the intros and menus for this game really did an amazing job. The game could only look so good, but all of those menu visuals really let you know WHAT you are actually supposed to be piloting. Cheers!
The cockpit might have only been 10 polygons, but buy, did it feel like you were sitting in a mech. I'm so glad this was a part of my early PC gaming days. It was Mechwarrior 2 and Diablo for days.
Came here and went right to the new MW5 Clans play through... my goodness am I getting old. I still remember booting up this in Win '95; that opening cutscene with the fiery logo was iconic. Thought Clan Wolf and Jade Falcon were just the coolest things ever (more of a Wolf myself).
This game has best audio, the music, sounds, atmosphere, even complexity of controling the mech was great. I used to play it with a friend on lonely nights at home. One handling yoystick and other keyboard. I had the best times! The friend nigjtmares hehehehe
@@L1011Widebody yes, you do. I admit it's harder than it looks when it isn't PlayStation Format. Although, I played some missions that were so difficult that I didn't escape, sometimes. The controls were also different in the PlayStation Format, with 8 different Settings in the Controls. I always had to pick Setting 7 to at least activate the Torso Twist, Jump Jets, and make it easier to pilot whatever Mech I chose to enter Battle.
Oh gosh do I have to choose? I admit Pyre Light has a special place in my heart because it's the first mission song, the one that brings me right back to my childhood immediately... Arkham Bridge is a really rocking song, with all the intensity and urgency of the strings playing into that mission. The soundtrack was just done so very well and really showed the love and care the developers had for the lore, and the setting, and making things feel great. Iron Piston is definitely a standout track, it is like the Kashmir (Led Zeppelin) of MechWarrior, it's got a great heavy metal feel to it without using the traditional heavy metal instruments. But if I had to pick one favorite, it would definitely absolutely be Armor Veil. It's a fantastic track, the snare conveys that sense of military urgency, but the minor key strings really project a feeling of loneliness, that you are out there in the cold snowy blizzard with no one else to depend on. The horns are an excellent touch, it gives it a real feel of a long, grueling, arduous journey. The feeling of a long, arduous hunt, the wolf tracking his prey through the cold, the snowy elements, steadfastly for hours. The symphony crashes are perfectly timed, hinting that at any time you might encounter an enemy, waiting to attack you. The part about 1:10 brings to mind the battle of man against nature, you can really imagine it playing over a movie scene of a sled-dog team struggling to bring those desperately needed medical supplies to that lonely outpost before the people die. The long sweeping strings really encapture the feeling of a long and brutal endeavor. The strings shift to a more urgent tone at 1:37, suggesting you are almost there, that you are just about to save the day, just a bit further. When the backing instruments withdraw at 1:49, it gives that glimmer of hope, that this is the last hill we have to climb, that there really is only one more trial to endure. And the resulting buildup, the striking, heavy percussion, just conjures the image of the weary trooper, the tired ranger, collapsing from exhaustion at the doorstep of the cabin. Finally, now, he is able to rest, sure that he has done his job and saved everything. It's really just a fantastic track, I think I said that already?
@@L1011Widebody I think you're right. It's all suspenseful until the mission is a success. This would be why it's so exciting. So, I'll say my other favorites... Cold Crescent because of the "Hit and Run Tactic" needed to Destroy the Main Terraformer Unit Core, and get out before the Temperature Spike is Detected, and the blast takes you with it. Velvet Hammer, being an Offensive Tactic to Protect Josel Fetlandral, the Aide de Camp while his Hover Limousine heads to the Opera Plex. Pyre Light, Since it's like an Arid Desert with Sandstorms. It may explain why the Wolf's Dragoons' mission was Scrubbed before they could go in and destroy the Fuel Pumping Station.
To be honest, clans are (rightfully) hated by the battletech community despite how cool they are. Imagine, if you will, a table top game that is nearing being balance when all of a sudden a new faction pops up for sale. Not only that, their weapons do more damage, weighless, produce less heat, are more accurate, and have more of them per mech.
Oh lovely memories…. Not seen this for like 25 years… Still have some of the battletech books from that time, too. It’s such a rich and detailed universe.
OMGGGGGGGG I remember when I played it 1998!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, I had a S3 virge version, so unplayable in any other video card of that time!!!... where the time has gone?????????
It was the game that make you feel how BIG and SLOW this mechs. You have time to think about strategy and time to react. Great 3D, clean and simple. Really the Mech Simulator, not just arcade pew-pew shooter.
Does anyone know why the lasers in this game are projectiles and not hitscanned "beams"? This was my first Mechwarrior experience, and I have always held this as the standard of lasers, although no others followed suit. I assume it is because of technical reasons, but figured I would ask if anyone knew for sure.
Damn, even in other universes, the power of BFG-9000 is so great, everyone wants one. Jokes aside, that's one very cool homage. I never caught that one when I played this game back in the 90's.
the music in this game created such an immersive environment , scratch that, The combination of music , effects , graphics for the time , game ambience . it earnt its right to be remastered, i would love a faithful remastered version that i could install and play without 3rd party software . im tempted to just watch this.......
This is the version of MW2 I played as a kid, I could install the game from my disc on Win98/XP but I cannot for the life of me get any version of MW2 to work on Windows 7. What version of the game is this and how are you running it? Thanks for any help you can provide.

it needs a remake rather than remaster-- there's nothing to remaster here.. there's all of 12 polygons on a model here
Absolutely, id gladly pay $20 for a full remaster that adds all the updates Mercs added with modern PC support

L-1011 WIDEBODY I have to say it... That was an excellent play through of Clan Wolf.
You also earned your blood name as the New Khan. Excellent work.
Thank you very much! I really worked hard to make this playthrough look great and cinematic and everything. I do great work, quiaff?
@@L1011Widebody yes, you do. I admit it's harder than it looks when it isn't PlayStation Format.
Although, I played some missions that were so difficult that I didn't escape, sometimes. The
controls were also different in the PlayStation Format, with 8 different Settings in the Controls.
I always had to pick Setting 7 to at least activate the Torso Twist, Jump Jets, and make it easier
to pilot whatever Mech I chose to enter Battle.
@@L1011Widebody Out of curiosity, do you have a Favorite Soundtrack in Mechwarrior 2 : 31st century combat?
My favorite is "Pyre Light."
This
would be why it's so exciting. So, I'll say my other favorites... Cold Crescent because of the "Hit and Run Tactic"
needed to Destroy the Main Terraformer Unit Core, and get out before the Temperature Spike is Detected,
and the blast takes you with it.
I never even played this, but can definitely say it absolutely deserves a proper remaster.
Of all the games I've missed, I miss Mechwarrior 2 the most.
To think that this is still the only game in Mechwarrior history where you can actually play as The Clans rather than the Sphere.
To be honest, clans are (rightfully) hated by the battletech community despite how cool they are. Imagine, if you will, a table top game that is nearing being balance when all of a sudden a new faction pops up for sale. Not only that, their weapons do more damage, weighless, produce less heat, are more accurate, and have more of them per mech.
hey man you aren't gonna believe what just happened
Thanku for the upload, even more so for the memories returned 👍 childhood restored bro.
How nostalgic. played this game on the family pc with my old man
I still think this game has some of the best sound effects and music to this day.
Fuck time is cruel I feel so damn old...
I thought this was THE COOLEST game ever when I played this at 8 years old!
I love how the intro still looks better than most games released today. Still got the CD.
0:44 I remember putting it over and over again just to see and hear this part lol. When you were a kid that was epic.
2:22:45 is my absolute favourite mission. It blew my mind as a kid that I could get away with this ruse.
It is really great, the attention to detail and depth of the scripting for the MechWarrior 2 missions, quiaff?
@@L1011Widebody Aff!
love that song when you get dropped off on the first mission in the desert
Ah, the game that introduced me to Battletech, and the Marauder.
Dude, I love this game. "Reactor online, sensors online, weapons online. All systems nominal."
the graphics, gameplay and music/sound is awesome. so many memories, this game and MYST
Man the music is still so incredible. I still have my Sidewinder pro that came bundled with Mech 2!. I might still have Mech 2 somewhere not sure.
Oh lovely memories…. Not seen this for like 25 years…
Still have some of the battletech books from that time, too.
It’s such a rich and detailed universe.
OMGGGGGGGG I remember when I played it 1998!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, I had a S3 virge version, so unplayable in any other video card of that time!!!... where the time has gone?????????
Good lord that Mad Cat, the most iconic mech ever created.
Grew up on this shit... miss these days!!!
Back when seeing Activision in the titles was a sign of good things to come
Masterpiece of it’s era.
It was the game that make you feel how BIG and SLOW this mechs. You have time to think about strategy and time to react. Great 3D, clean and simple. Really the Mech Simulator, not just arcade pew-pew shooter.
30:05 oh yes, that's the jam that always gets me on the dancefloor!
Does anyone know why the lasers in this game are projectiles and not hitscanned "beams"? This was my first Mechwarrior experience, and I have always held this as the standard of lasers, although no others followed suit. I assume it is because of technical reasons, but figured I would ask if anyone knew for sure.
No idea but I gather MechCommander also followed this trait. Puzzled me to hell, even to this day.
ahh.. those polygon graphic.. brings a warm feeling to my heart
I wish they would remaster these old mechwarrior games
Hey guys, at 18:49 anyone noticed the building containing BFG-9000? Wasn't it the most powerful weapon in DOOM? LOL
Damn, even in other universes, the power of BFG-9000 is so great, everyone wants one.
Jokes aside, that's one very cool homage. I never caught that one when I played this game back in the 90's.
OMG ,you just transported me back to highschool ❤
This series was fantastic, and this was the game that sucked me into the MW universe.
the music in this game created such an immersive environment , scratch that, The combination of music , effects , graphics for the time , game ambience . it earnt its right to be remastered, i would love a faithful remastered version that i could install and play without 3rd party software . im tempted to just watch this.......
This was my favorite out of them all, so so so good.
In the wolf intro, how the vulture get there?
I remember getting this with the sidewinder joystick! Man I loved this game so much.
I used to play this all the time! My favorite Mechs were Marauder, Timberwolf, Mad Dog, and Summoner
one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time...I still have the CD
This is the version of MW2 I played as a kid, I could install the game from my disc on Win98/XP but I cannot for the life of me get any version of MW2 to work on Windows 7. What version of the game is this and how are you running it? Thanks for any help you can provide.
man i play this on the IBM ativa pc when it first came out with a video card and nice sounding speakers on win95 and they included this game , was addicted to it
The intro cutscene to this game is so good. Back when Mechwarrior was an actual Mech simulator and not a dumbed down fps game.
1:42:25 - Wow, I don't remember the time of day changing in this game. It really was ahead of its time.
