I remember getting into mechwarrior back in the 90s and the first mech I ever saw was the Mad Cat. That’s what it was referred to as, and it stuck even after finding out the original name was Timber Wolf.
Always loved the 'Mad Cat's, favorite mech ever and it's an absolute beast in MW5Clans. Almost done with my playthrough and unlocked the War Hawk, and just gave it to squad mate and still wrecking havoc with the Timer Wolf. ❤
To my surprise, I found myself REALLY enjoying the Hellbringer Prime with some tweaks. Dropped the ERPPC's to ERLL's, upgraded the ERML's to MPL's, and ditched the machine guns, AMS, and targeting computer to make room for more heat sinks and modular armor. Now it still hits like a truck, but takes an EFFORT to overheat, while taking a significantly greater beating to take down. I love that thing.
Being a loyal subject of the Draconis Combine since the 80's I don't usually play clan mechs, but I must admit to having had a bit of a crush on the look of the Vulture/Mad Dog ever since I saw the painting of it in the color section of the 1990 Battletech Compendium. I'll probably be spending a lot of time in that one in this game. 😁
@@SLDFSpectreSix Heh. To be fair us Combine fans are kinda used to our faction of choice never (or at least very rarely) being the protagonists in a Mechwarrior game, so we grit our teeth and pull the trigger while telling ourselves "that target was a Davion. And that one too! And that one!" 😁
Timberwolf is the iconic Mech of the entire game since MW2. Some of the configs in MW5:C are brutal. I have two I like: once with ER ML & ER LL in each arm, and left and right Torso are 2xSRM 6 (for SRM24). Good mix of range, brawl and alpha strike death. Just made a new one exploring (after running out of 600 SRM's for first time) and maxed out MPL, think I got 9 MPL and a pair of MG's (with spare missle slots, but tonage is real).
I love the MP mashup… but, I’m actually leaning toward an ER laser build with 2xSRM6. That MP build is absolutely brutal, though. I group them into 2 groups, so you don’t have to jack up your heat to kill a vehicle or turret.
I remember playing MW4:Mercs and facing down a clan trinary on a beautiful sunny beach: I kept point in an ECM "Loki" sporting twin LB-X Autocannons and a NARC beacon launcher backed up by three lance mates in longbows comically stuffed with far too many LRMs. I fought in the shade. My enemies died in explosions. Anyone bold got dual shotguns to the face. It's a coin toss whether the battle or the salvage was more glorious. My first two playthroughs I only ran an assault mech on Solaris VII. Any field OP I was in my Hell bringer from the moment I got one 'till the end of the game. Fun times!
Timberwolf has always been a clan heavy mech favorite, though the MadDog or Hellbringer are close seconds. Very much looking forward to the assault mech review video!
Okay, it genuinely bugs me that the Ebon Jaguar is missing from this lineup. I understand most of the missing Clan Invasion mechs, but... *come on*. It's the totem mech!

I'll admit the Hellbringer is a guilty pleasure. Yes, it has the armor of a 40 tonner, but it punches like an 80 tonner. Without the Hellbringer, there would be no Loki II (Hel), so it has a special place in my heart.
Prime with one LRM swapped out for more heatsinks and armour is very effective, and durable enough. And the 2 tons of ammo is sufficient to keeping the remaining launcher firing for a good chunk of the mission.
I cannot tell you which is my favorite to run until I buy and try them all out. I have a special spot in my heart for all the 70t battlemechs. My answer is Summoner, for now.

No one does Clan missile boating quite like the Mad Dog. Playing Prime is addicting as it is in any game. It will probably be a go-to if I don't feel like I have to carry in damage/kills Mad Dog A (I like to call it the Splat Dog) has been very fun and shreds like you expect (Nova Prime maybe slower about cheesy insane damage alphas, but feels better overall though. Unfortunately the splat dog definitely has ammo issues in this game. I've had 10 tons of SRM ammo (total 900 ammo for 36 SRM alphas), and I still run out half way through the mission, leaving me to rely on the 4 ER medium lasers (which I use on anything that isn't a mech). Running the Mad Dog A stock, it has plenty of ammo in the AC5, and you won't overheat from the PPC alone, but the damage is just not enough to keep up with the swarms of enemies, and the lack of ammo for the SRMS with stock basically reserves it as a panic button Haven't tried the Mad Dog C (I like to call it the gauss dog), buuut I had ammo issues in previous games with it, and if I'm running out of ammo on the splat dog like I am, I don't think the Mad Dog C can last a whole mission. At least you can go 1 gauss and something else though right? That said, I'm playing the Mad Dog for missiles, sooooo dunno if I'll ever test out ballistics on it... Also I generally prefer PPCs over Gauss anyways. Gauss feels good in this game, even if it feels like the Gauss in MW5 mercs and clans should swap sides visually and sound-wise. Clans gauss is basically feels like a large autocannon in this game Gonna be hard to resist the urge to play Mad Dog from here on out in my playthrough though = )
Gauss has decent ammo efficiency over missiles. You get 60 shots per ton of ammo and the Gauss Dog comes with 4 tons of ammo, plus at the range the Ai forces you to fight, it's hard to miss compared to SRM/LRM. At lvl 8 I like running a variant that rocks 2xLL on one arm, 3xMP on the other, 2xSSRM4 and 1xLRM15. Ammo is moved to the legs. The lasers are set to chainfire so there is always some damage output to clean up small fries. Lasers are great for removing all armor on a single segment and then the splash damage from the lasers is enough to clean out the structure. Runs a bit hot, but a lot of maps have rivers and so on to keep cool. A lot of missions also have ammo crates to restock, just switch to scanner from time to time. Usually by the time I run out, there is a crate nearby.

While i like all of the clan heavies, the summoner is my favorite, it doesn't attract as much attention as the Timberwolf and can still lay down a blistering array of direct fire. Unfortunately the ebon jag doesn't make it into enough games and early on in mercs with mods its typically too expensive until i start fielding heavier mechs.

While i dont dislike the more bulky timberwolf model, making the shoulder LRMs fully attached to the arms doesnt sit right with me. Still one of my favorite chassis though.
Mad Dog/Vultures for me. Not only do I find them perfectly balanced in all aspects but -- the fact they weigh 60 tons means you get to field 4/5 of them with the typical 240/300 ton limit placed in many of the games (lance/star). Having everyone in the same amount of armor saves you from always having that one guy in a light mech that always seems to get pasted even when you tell them to hang back on every mission, making you have to buy/train/sacrifice another rookie pilot. Having a good LRM spread on AI teammates has also always seemed like the way to go, because then they can't whiff their shots -- which is a lot more painful to their sustained performance when it's PPC/Gauss/AC etc (heat, ammo, or otherwise). Standard config is usually amazingly cost efficient, too, meaning your ongoing costs are pretty minimal in any version of the game that requires an upkeep.
We've come so far... oh how i remember the days of taking an osiris into a lan party tournament in mechwarrior 2... where everyone else was in battlemasters and timber wolves... here I am in a light mech, and not just any light mech, the only light mech where the jump jets point backwards, not down. So I'm in a light mech that can damn near break the sound barrier. I zip around the map staying out of trouble until there is only one battlemaster remaining. @@TTBprime the vulture and shadowcst too hell yeah. Still remember MW 4 vengeance tutorial using that shadowcat. That and the uziel are my favorite medium mechs of all time.
I love the Mad Dog and Timberwolf . . . But I think I might stick with my Nova. My custom Nova has speed, jump jets, 700+ armor, 12 small lasers, and surprisingly decent heat management. I used to run this bad boy wayyyy back in 31st century combat. A single volley of weapons is enough to kill some mechs outright and even the heaviest of mechs can't take more than 2 or 3 volleys. It has so much damned armor I can slug it out all day and all night. Most missions I was literally charging in at 100% dropping everything in sight and didn't have to hit the breaks even once. Taking on the whole damned inner Sphere by myself lol
This is brilliant - I played mw4 ages ago and was actually wondering where Thor and Loki went … Thanks for clearing out that these are just their inner sphere names.
Well, the Ebon Jaguar wasn't really available to the clans during the initial invasion since it was still being designed at that point. The first time one was spotted in the Inner Sphere was during the battle of Luthien, which is towards the end of the invasion in 3052, not long before the battle of Tukayyid forced the clans to halt their plans for fighting their way to Earth for 15 years.
I haven't played a Mechwarrior game since Mechwarrior 3 in the 90s. My mech of choice was the Thor, which apparently is called Summoner now? No mission the Thor couldn't handle in that old classic. Pound for pound best mech in that game for me.
Summoner was always called that by the Clans. Thor is the designation the Inner Sphere gave this clan mech. Kind of how NATO has different names for eastern bloc planes than Russian and the other ex-soviet states use. In previous MW (3 and onwards) games we play on the side of the IS, hence use of their designations. The games also happen at different times in the universe, so earlier games (esp the ones that had those clan mechs) happened chronologically after MW5:Clans.
@@adriankoch964 Haha that's what I figured. Bit like the Mad Cat/Timber Wolf thing. I had thought it was more like how the F-16 Fighting Falcon is referred to as the Viper colloquially lol. Clans looks like the closest thing to MW3 but it's proximity to Mercenaries has me concerned.
@Krystalmyth if you are on pc and are open to learning a bit about how to install mods or already know it, Mercenaries is great. The mods that change the behaviour of your lance and add stuff completed the game for me.

I wish you just had free access to ALL hardpoints on a Mech, and didn't need it limited by omni-pods. Just let people go crazy and balance it with heat gen and speed. Also wish there was a "firing range" test mode after you modify a mech, just to see how it feels in a test area with some dummy targets at various ranges. So many of these games have so many options for experimentation but nothing to support you experimenting easily. UI gets in the way of that too with this game.
The MadCat funy part is: catapults use CPLT and not CAT as designation. In german novels, they used Katamaran (like the boat) coming from Kata(pult) and Mara(uder) .

What annoys me most of the mechs in MW5:C is that most of them have their arms pretty far away from the cockpit which causes you to hit dirt when firing from ledges or near inclines. Also that the first person head bob and walking speed is different from third person. I miss the 2 PPC catapult I was rocking in MW5:M. It was so good for peeking on ledges, especially in 3rd person and especially with mods that added heavy PPCs.

"Zey are everywhere!" - "ZHEN SHOOT EVERYWHERE!"
@@TTBprime the vulture and shadowcst too hell yeah. Still remember MW 4 vengeance tutorial using that shadowcat. That and the uziel are my favorite medium mechs of all time.
Summoner gang here! 🤖
is the the king crab available in the game?
In previous game (MW5: Mercs) yes , In this game, no.
You might be able to find a shoot one, but playable mechs are Clan mechs only.
One Hellbringer for ECM support whenever possible.
Vultuuuurrreee. Finally
Pride of clans:Timber Wolf.
Ahh! Too bad no Cauldron Born, my favorite after Timber Wolf of course.
This is brilliant - I played mw4 ages ago and was actually wondering where Thor and Loki went … Thanks for clearing out that these are just their inner sphere names.
Meanwhile my favorite clan omni is the Ebon Jag. Guess I'll hope for DLC or mods to add it in one day.🥲
Well, the Ebon Jaguar wasn't really available to the clans during the initial invasion since it was still being designed at that point. The first time one was spotted in the Inner Sphere was during the battle of Luthien, which is towards the end of the invasion in 3052, not long before the battle of Tukayyid forced the clans to halt their plans for fighting their way to Earth for 15 years.
Aidan Pryde modified his Timber Wolf with Jumpjets.
So no IIC mechs? 😢
I was really hoping for a Nova Cat. 😢
Hey, as an aside, do you think an old head who liked the Milsim like combat on MW3 will like MW5? I didn't enjoy MW4 much at all as it was very arcadish and multi-player focused.
@@laurinjoelschafhausen I'd love to try it but I never picked it up originally because I had heard it didn't have much of a single player campaign? I'm mostly interested in Clans due to its incredible Launch Trailer showing some competent cinematics. I won't be doing multiplayer much I think, least for the moment. If it's got enough single player content I probably will check it out. Oh and definitely, PC only player here. c:
@@Krystalmyth that's all mercs has is single player campaign...the original revenge story, then branching stories based off DLC's. Then of course sandbox mode. Before I played mercs. mech 2 was the last time I played.
Any one knows if the Ebon jaguar is in this game?
No 'jags in this one so far. I think high chance we'll see them in a DLC.
I kind of find the amount of mechs too low for the price
Why the heck the mechs turn so fast? Where is the mass? It feels like toy boxes.
Why mechs look different from MW4? Is this the original look?
Because there are 24 years between MW4 and this.
The MadCat funy part is: catapults use CPLT and not CAT as designation.
In german novels, they used Katamaran (like the boat) coming from Kata(pult) and Mara(uder) .
Timber Wolf all he way
Timber Wolf 2 ER large 6 ER medium!
Timber Wolf…it’s been way too long. The last time I ever controlled one was back in the days of the OG Xbox in MechAssault and MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf…
Timber wolf forever
This game really needs more mechs. I hope some patches add some and they're all just not dlc.
It's pgi lol
Can we get a bull shark!
No Ebon Jaguar 😢
Can't hear you over the sound of my Chainsword in Space Marine II
I miss my MAD-5D Marauder
I think they should work those missile pod a bit more.
So 2c types yet
No IIC mechs in this game. I'd say we see them in a DLC.
Timber wolf good dire wolf way too OP. game gets easy once you get the diashi 😅
Mad dog with 4 srm 6, 2 srm 4, 2 med pulse, 2 large pulse.. yes it overheats..yes it ripps atlas in half.. 😂🎉 with chasy upgrades 89 kph.. get close rip in half..
Im happy to see the Shadowcat, Maddog and Madcat... But no Ebon Jaguar :C
The reviews for the game are also making me less and less interested in buy the game :/
many mw5 mercenaries mech missing .. sad.
Im enjoying the game, but surprised that mechs glitch around on broken rubble on a fully released game.
Sadly the Small ER Novas are the most powerful mech in the game..
Damn those LRM Pods look so cheap at firing 😒
Summoner my favorite.
PS: i don't get why they change laser visual effect... look bad.
Was so excited to run around in A timberwolf like back in mechwarrior 3 days but this time as the smoke jaguars but sadly after watching some gameplay online the game is pretty bad with bugs, poor optimization, braindead A.I. both enemies and allies, cringe story and insultingly low mech selection so i returned the game on stream before even playing it, Heres hopeing mechwarriors 6 actaully does something right.
Its all about the Hellbringer and Timberwolf. Never could find an effective loadout for the Summoner and man, the Mad Dog is just paper, such a bad Heavy.
Sadly the summoner is kinda garbage compared to the others .
GGAAAYYY. Titanfall 2 destroys this.
You dare to refuse our batchall?
I just found out this game is a stand alone and NOT an x-pac for MW5: Mercs. And for 50$ it is not worth it. Only 16 mechs, crap customization because of the omnipod system. Sheesh, no thanks.
Ahhhh!!!! it's a clan game, use the clan names. Your switching back and forth every other sentence is ridiculous. And you list clan and IS names in the description, just pick already.
Anyone else feel like the heavy mechs don't look heavy or is it just me?
Just you.
