    These drum libraries are incredible but I have to say GGD has mastered cymbals. These cymbals sound better than a lot of recordings of real drums in the studio. The transients are just perfect. I prefer the One Kit Wonder. IMO its more versatile and realistic sounding overall than Modern and Massive. I'd pick M&M for more processed tracks where OKW is definitely the more authentic "real recorded drums" sound. Drum forge is great but sounds a little trigger-y for my tastes

    • @JamesZhan
      @JamesZhan  4 года назад +4

      I will have to disagree with you on the cymbals. GGD's cymbals fall apart when you do fast hits, especially cymbal swells. They don't sound realistic at all and you will hear the attack very clearly for every single hit when in real recordings, you shouldn't. When you are just riding the cymbals, you won't usually actually hear the attack.
      That's exactly why Superior Drummer has the "Multiple Hit Emulation," which would basically hide the attack when you do stuff fast, consecutive cymbal hits.
      Same with the hi-hat. If you try to do the super fast, blast beat style hi-hat (like the intro of "Hourglass" by Lamb of God), GGD's hi-hats sound very robotic and unnatural, while SD's hi-hats sound a lot more realistic.
      From my experience, Superior Drummer is pretty much the only library that has the most realistic sounding cymbals in the market right now.

    Awesome demo man.
    I have all GGD product but this drum forge cymbals, toms are much better.
    But the toms in all GGD idk why they make the tom to feel far away (too much processing to make it sounds more 3d) and i also hate the toms is sound rubber and dead.
    The modern fusion, modern and fusion cymbals is too much processing in the eq on the high end.
    One thing i noticed from doing parallel compression for all GGD drum library using smash and grab is that the high end is barking like crazy.
    Still loving my studio drummer for the first drum vsti i own for some reason its sounds great
    The drum forge is much "acoustic" especially on the toms. Especially for this tune. Gotta give that a try.

    • @JamesZhan
      @JamesZhan  4 года назад +4

      Tbh, I think all three of them have very limited number of velocity layers (or samples per layer as you put it). You can clearly tell when you go from one velocity layer to another, which is not good. Toontrack's drum libraries have WAY more velocity layers in general. I find doing fast rolls, especially cresendo, to be pretty awful with GGD libraries and DF.

    Hello James. I just discovered you channel and wondered what you think about BFD3 that I plan to buy ? I actually have Addictive Drums 2 and Native Instrument's Drummers, but BFD3 samples seem to sounds more organic ! (PS: I really like how you review samples while also giving us stems. Great work, too, on the youtube time stamps)

    • @JamesZhan
      @JamesZhan  4 года назад +2

      Glad you enjoy my videos! BFD3 isn't particularly popular among the recording industry right now, and I have never used it so I can't really tell you whether or not it's good.
      However, for organic drum samples, I think Toontrack has the best selection. Both the EZ Drummer line and the Superior Drummer line are very good. Their libraries are probably the most deeply sampled (lots of velocity layers) in the drum library market right now and you can also do full bleed mode with their libraries.
      The SD3 sampler is extraordinary as well, with MIDI capabilities and ability to convert real drum recordings to MIDI.

  • @XiyuYang
    @XiyuYang 4 года назад +5

    I hope Nolly&co hires a software engineering team to program a plugin for GGD, Kontakt is a capable but limiting platform and has become a bottleneck for GGD. The number of velocity layers and round robins per layer are both limited in all GGD libraries, P4 was deeply sampled (15 layers on snare hits and 8 round robins per layer) but rolls and low velocity hits are still very mechanical sounding.

    • @JamesZhan
      @JamesZhan  4 года назад +4

      Is Kontakt actually limiting the number of velocity layers for Kontakt libraries? I feel like that might not be it because NI has some amazing piano libraries where the velocity layer is not an issue. Kontakt is one of the biggest samplers out there so I feel like it should allow a lot of velocity layers. I might be wrong though.
      Developing their own sampler can be a hit or miss. For example, Drumforge left Kontakt about 3 years ago and developed their own sampler, but til this day, I feel that the sampler is still not mature and not fully stable. Spitfire Audio also released their own sampler. It was a really good one but it was full of bugs for a long while. It can cost massive amount of resources for GGD to pull this off. I would rather them invest the money to going further with future sample libraries.
      If GGD can get to Toontrack's level of deep sampling, that would be amazing.

    • @XiyuYang
      @XiyuYang 4 года назад

      @@JamesZhan Kontakt itself doesn't limit the amount of details in samples, but the way it handles samples and organize them in RAM makes it a VERY RAM and storage intensive application. There are libraries that contain hundreds of gigabytes of data out there (Metropolis Ark, Berlin Strings, Spitfire Symphony Professional etc) but you're probably looking at 64GB RAM (at least) to run those smoothly.
      Depending on how you sample drums, a drum kit library can be lightweight, or realistic, but not both, well not in Kontakt at least, I haven't yet heard a Kontakt based drum library that sounds realistic.
      I have Death&Darkness from Toontrack and I can easily load all the OH channels, room mics while barely going over 6G, I don't know how many layers and round robins Toontrack allows for their SD3 application, but that library sounds a lot more realistic than GGD, especially when you program rolls and ghost notes.
      Probably not a good point to launch their own sampler at this point as GGD is still a fairly new and small player to the sample library scene, but down the road I hope that happens. Also, GGD sells a lot better than Drumforge :D

    • @JamesZhan
      @JamesZhan  4 года назад +1

      @@XiyuYang Hmm I'm not familiar with the inner workings of Kontakt but I have composed orchestral scores with Spitfire Studio Professional Orchestra libraries (Strings, Woodwind and Brass) and even with quite a lot of articulations loaded, I thought the usage was pretty normal. I have 32GB of RAM and the only time it starts to struggle was when I was using Shreddage III.
      You are right though. Toontrack has the sampler game down!

    This stuff is so helpful! I'm looking at either Modern Fusion ($39) or Modern Massive ($64), both on sale right now. Was kinda sold on MM, but someone pointed out to me that it can still take some work to get the premixed ready sound that Modern Fusion has (the Nolly video where he walks through his mix process is more depth than I want to go for quick garage demos). Are you saying the Turbo wet/dry knob will get you there if I don't want to do a lot of processing? Is that all you did for MM in this video to get it sounding this way? I dig the simplicity of OKW and I like the tones, but if MM gives you versatility plus mix ready result with the turbo knob at 100%, then why not??

    • @JamesZhan
      @JamesZhan  3 года назад +3

      Yeah, in the video, all I did for M&M is turning the turbo knobs all the way up to get the pre-mixed sounds. I definitely would consider M&M all turbo mode to be mix-ready enough for demos! I personally would recommend M&M over MF because you just get a lot more options. For $64 you get WAY more out of M&M compared to MF.

    This is not that good virtual instrument. It uses Native Kontakt Player 6 which is glithcing great amounts. All the samples sound terrible you need external plugins to make them sound alive etc Wavesfactory Snare Buzz and SK10 ( real toms dont sound like rubberbands ). ITS CHEAP and with cheap you get cheap sounds. Of course for bedroom player/producer this can be the choice but id save some money and buy Superior Drummer 3. Besides this eats more CPU power than my old trusty Superior Drummer 2 which is way better sounding.
