Probably because a synthesizer's filter is the electronic equivalent of our mouth, while its oscillators are the electronic equivalent of our vocal cords :-)
A favorite sound for me was to layer two pads, pan one layer left, pan the other right, then detune the layers. Also, you should show the unison modes. Stack 8 voices to one key, detune the voices and set up the glide. One glide mode keeps the voices tracking together while another mode lets them drift individually until they reach the end of the glide, all in tune again.
Not being especially tech savvy in that respect, i think i agree with the first part-"thicker, richer tone" seems to involve a tiny percentage of distortion.... Whatever - that all sounds like a simple recipe. So, why aren't modern manufacturers following it? If we could make a Moog or an OB-8 or a Jupiter back in the 70s and 80s, why can't we make one now? Aside from the still cray expensive Dave Smith stuff...you'd think technology and manufacturing techniques would bring prices of old technology down to earth. Remember when the first CD players were a thousand dollars? Now, they're $50. An exaggerated point, for sure, but the conceptual question remains. I don't know why we're getting digital recreations of the sounds we want when we should be getting the real thing.
There are so many amazing synths out there, but when I think about THAT buzzy, brassy circa-1983 tone we all know and love so well, it isn't Jupiter or CS-80 my mind goes to... it's the Oberheim
Robby Lapp the way it buzzes, it almost feels like the sounds are physically resonating within the keyboard's body and chassis. Maybe I'm crazy but it gives off such an "alive" sound.
I haven't thought about it but it is a good observation. The sound is slightly different to Jupiter but audible. I think Jupiter has a more wet tone to my knowlidge.
The stepped filter arpeggiated sound at the end of Van Halen's "1984" instrumental :) Amazing how such high end yet straight forward synths like this, are to try out different effects un its, be it pedals, rack or ancient stand alone units - instant gratification!
Would love a Whitney houston breakdown of "I wanna dance with somebody (who loves me)" like you did with thriller. Amazing synth bass and top brass sounds.
It is indeed a legal requirement to play Jump when you have any Oberheim or "Jump" patch on any synth. No shame in that. That ending on the Csus2 will always be in my heart and has been since 1984 ;)
Oberheim electronics had this solution for that query as well with the model that followed this one up, the Xpander. Who needs too many patch cables when it can potentially all be accomplished internally? Which is why I now have a Matrix 1000 (in case I *ever* want to learn how to program the damn thing).
The Oberheim OB-8 what a great synth. I agree with Jonathan Campagna a famous patches video has to come next. Great Demo. There's not enough talk about this synth.
the holy grail...maybe it is ?but ive played one and the cs80 is very over-rated.yes its a great synth but its not that great.ive got my keeper synths and ones ive let go.if i had a cs80,and i nearly did have one in 1998 for £750 at a store in covent garden, for the right price i would sell it on in the blink of an eye.my jupiter 8 on the other hand is never ever going to be for sale.with the cs80 everyone gets caught up in the vangelis blade runner thing-i love vangelis but bladerunner isnt all cs80,nowhere near
Another awesome analogue synth video from the Doctor! I can't help wondering how gets access to all of these vintage gems. I have a DX7, D50 & M1 but even vintage digital synths are nowhere near as difficult to find as their analogue predecessors (or as expensive without selling a kidney!)
never really got on with the ob8,yea so it did the jump sound but so what.i found it light and too polite,a bit of a rock music keyboard.now the obxa...well thats a different animal.feel the literal weight of an ob8 compared to an obxa and you will tell straight away which has the best components.soundwise aswel-always obxa.great video tho not knocking that
Probably not the right time, but I'd really like to see Giorgio Moroder and Phil Oakey's Together in Electric Dreams broken down. P.S.: I also noticed you're nearly at 300K subs. Nice one!
The OB-X is older, it was released a few years before. It's still a 2 oscillator, it came as a 4 6 or 8 voice and it was a bit more simple. But I haven't tested them side by side yet
4:14.. looks like he's making sweet love to the ob-8 .. this came up while searching "Kraftwerk" videos uploaded in the last week (they played a show in Copenhagen recently). I hope you didn't tag this with "kraftwerk" in an attempt to get clicks.. as that'd be deceptive and shitty.
What a beast of a synth, the sounds are just amazing, love the pan feature on the voices, but it's so huge and ugly looking, those decals look so dated if I had one I would have to re-decorate the case and change those awful knob caps. ✌️
3:38 I love it how literally everyone when playing with a synth's filter has to make the filter shapes with their mouth :)
Probably because a synthesizer's filter is the electronic equivalent of our mouth, while its oscillators are the electronic equivalent of our vocal cords :-)
How can a vintage produce such a futuristic sound!
It was the new age of sci-fi and stuff
_Thanks, Star Wars_
Not made in china like todays synths, more quality components and engineers back in the day.
My birthyear 1983 rules, OB-8 was released that beautiful year-) I adore Oberheim synths.

What a BEAST !
I love Oberheim Synthesizers, thankx a lot for sharing it.
Makes me sad, that 30 years later, modern synths are still trying to sound like this... and can't. WTF? We've been to MARS....
We havent been to mars
Sorry, bro. “We” as a figurative personification. “We” have put a Rover on mars.
wait, are you saying you don't like the ob6?
It's the distortion in the analog filters, the simplicity, and the hardware knobs and sliders.
Not being especially tech savvy in that respect, i think i agree with the first part-"thicker, richer tone" seems to involve a tiny percentage of distortion.... 0:00 *JUMP!!! JUMP!!! JUMP!!!*
Go Ahead
There are so many amazing synths out there, but when I think about THAT buzzy, brassy circa-1983 tone we all know and love so well, it isn't Jupiter or CS-80 my mind goes to... it's the Oberheim
It does excel at buzzy sounds. Good observation.

Very cool clinic!! Keep it up, Doctor Doctor, Doctor mix :)
Ha! I recognise that song :-)
Doctor Mix of course it was totally intended! 😂👍 when Miami was a cool place with cool music ha
doctor mix has a fun life
This synth has a thic ass, a meaty rumbling low end and I love it! Probably the best sounding synth.
Enjoying these vintage synth videos - keep them coming - Cheers!
It is indeed a legal requirement to play Jump when you have any Oberheim or "Jump" patch on any synth. No shame in that. That ending on the Csus2 will always be in my heart and has been since 1984 ;)
Beautiful sounds ! Thank you Doctor Mix 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
This beast is all Prince up and down- Please play 1999 on this beast for us!
Andy Anderson nope. That was the OBXA.
What a beast of a work station..
What a sound! Amazing!
Who needs a modular synth when an OB-8 can do that?
To spend 10k and still run out of patch cables :)
Modular synths have appealed to me. They just make random noises.
Oberheim electronics had this solution for that query as well with the model that followed this one up, the Xpander. Who needs too many patch cables when it can potentially all be accomplished internally? Which is why I now have a Matrix 1000 (in case I *ever* want to learn how to program the damn thing).
The OB-8 is so beautyfull sounding !!! Mighty and powerful, really great. And - very good presentation by he way !! :-)
The Oberheim OB-8 what a great synth. I agree with Jonathan Campagna a famous patches video has to come next. Great Demo. There's not enough talk about this synth.
The doctor of music mixing with vintage synths.
For a short time, the sound at 4:45 reminded me of Talking Out Of Turn by The Moody Blues.
Working your way through the cream of the cream! Are you going to get to the holy grail; the CS-80?
hmmm, interesting idea
the holy grail...maybe it is ?but ive played one and the cs80 is very over-rated.yes its a great synth but its not that great.ive got my keeper synths and ones ive let go.if i had a cs80,and i nearly did have one in 1998 for £750 at a store in covent garden, for the right price i would sell it on in the blink of an eye.my jupiter 8 on the other hand is never ever going to be for sale.with the cs80 everyone gets caught up in the vangelis blade runner thing-i love vangelis but bladerunner isnt all cs80,nowhere near
Can only dream of owning one - awesomeness ♤
Muchas gracias MASTER DOCTOR MIX.
I was so sad when I sold my OB-Xa. My girlfriend wanted to "grow up".. true story.
dump her! sleep with the OB
so ...she buyed a modular system??
Another awesome analogue synth video from the Doctor! I can't help wondering how gets access to all of these vintage gems. I have a DX7, D50 & M1 but even vintage digital synths are nowhere near as difficult to find as their analogue predecessors (or as expensive without selling a kidney!)
Really cool. I'm going to have my hands on a emulation of this very soon !
I REALLY want one!
Needs more Chariots of Fire. What a timeless synth, you could use some of the sounds you came up with for edm music today
It sounds soooo good
Great video! Please do one demoing the page 2 functions!
At 3:11, I half expected you to play the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers hit “You Got Lucky”. That’s the precise sound used by Ben Tench.
The PAN is very ingenious !
Same as the Proteus 2000.
Love that chain!
click on the video ...Van Halen -Jump came up...I hit Like on the spot. LOL
Now do an Ob-8 famous patches video next please!!!
Outright !
All OB-8 patches are famous!
He started out with the most over exposed one (except that I think he left out the portamento).
never really got on with the ob8,yea so it did the jump sound but so what.i found it light and too polite,a bit of a rock music keyboard.now the obxa...well thats a different animal.feel the literal weight of an ob8 compared to an obxa and you will tell straight away which has the best components.soundwise aswel-always obxa.great video tho not knocking that
Great video mate
would love to own one of these one day
Get ready to fork over like $13,000. lol
we want more !!!!!! ;)
that's a real synth ! with real oscillator,real VCF,real VCA and real sound !
sensacional
5:05 Sunday afternoon in the park stuff
Great synthesizer 👍👍👍
At about 5 minutes it gets real nasty. Love it.
Robby Lapp turned into an animals as leaders song lol
Great video!!!
Man I hope you do the Ensoniq ESQ-1 or SQ-80
Omg so cool :-)
Mean. 🔥
Hey. doctor mix you almost got a vangelis song there.
very possible :)
Blade runner end theme ?
They should do a limited re release with this synthesizer and make it affordable, I’m sure it would sell a shit ton and bring music back again!
too much labor to make one
if you thumbs down this guys videos, you clearly have zero musical talent ^^
Fresh Produce i like the video but i will dislike it to prove you wrong
thats a cool necklace
Great review of a great synth, although i would point out that Van Halen actually used the OBXA on Jump!!
Really? Damn! :-)
Probably not the right time, but I'd really like to see Giorgio Moroder and Phil Oakey's Together in Electric Dreams broken down.
P.S.: I also noticed you're nearly at 300K subs. Nice one!
4:16 sounds very fresh!
Ha Ha....love it !
Hello drmix. What is the difference between oberheim obx and ob8?
The OB-X is older, it was released a few years before. It's still a 2 oscillator, it came as a 4 6 or 8 voice and it was a bit more simple. But I haven't tested them side by side yet
Cool vid
2:00 that is PAC-man !
I noticed some synthesizer greatest numbers in this video
I laugh a lot with that , at 3:20
4:17, is that actually from some song? If so, I WANT TO HEAR IT!!
sensual moment at 4:20
😂
5:03 Terminator 🤖
Are u thinking the same as the ones that think that digital new stuff sounds equal to this wonderful analog gear? Impossible i think.
First like then watch !
4:14.. looks like he's making sweet love to the ob-8 .. this came up while searching "Kraftwerk" videos uploaded in the last week (they played a show in Copenhagen recently). I hope you didn't tag this with "kraftwerk" in an attempt to get clicks.. as that'd be deceptive and shitty.
I almost turned off the video when you played the VH riff
👍
How much?
today? about 3 grand (gbp) for one in good shape
pcuimac use gooogle
How did you get this Van Hallen. Through the video this Jump, already sick of him.💩😂
What a beast of a synth, the sounds are just amazing, love the pan feature on the voices, but it's so huge and ugly looking, those decals look so dated if I had one I would have to re-decorate the case and change those awful knob caps. ✌️
I don't know, knobs are not that great, bu i love the retro-computery pattern of lines and the general look of it
Now I do turn off the video when I hear the first riff. Doctor Mix stop being a follower. Use your brain. Be "you" on this keyboard. Bye
loathsome reviews. how can you show all instruments so horribly? disgusting sound, disgusting settings... why?
