34 years ago, my piano teacher telling me "KEEP UP ON THUMB CORNERS" all coming back to me! That's overcoming the tendency for beginners to drop your hand position flat when going to the thumb. I agree this is a good starter tutorial.
Claudio, you're really wonderful as a teacher! Why don't you create an entire music course covering not just (or not at all) the classical teaching, but all the things nobody tells you when you study music?!? 😃🤟 You know: basic students usually don't know a lot of harmony, rhythms, basic orchestration and thing like these, advanced students probably are very good at theory and practice, but sometimes lack of experience and global vision to master by themselves these topics. I'm sure a lot of people would be happy to pay for a product like this!!! 😜
The 5th point. So IMPORTANT. Actulay in every art. Painting, writing, etc... Be bold enough to say what you have/need to say, This is the core essence of art, as an artist you have open your brain with your tool (music, sculpture, poetry, etc...) in order to make others to see in it. Some people will not like it, some others will. It's painfull, don't care but do it with the more strength and sincerity you can. Thank you.

Brilliant lesson with great advice, thank you! I've played keyboards now for fifty years, and in the end you do tend to invent your own practice patterns, as the same old scales become monotonous and there are lots of other things you can do. I have a few interesting new ways to do scales and arpeggios, including: * LH goes up and down two octaves while RH goes up and down FOUR octaves, at twice the speed (I find this good for separating the hands and getting them more independent) * Parallel chromatic scales at arbitrary intervals (e.g. LH starts on C, RH on G, or Eb, or F#...) * Add diminished arpeggios if you're only playing minor and major ones. Or even "suspended" ones (1 2 5, or 1 4 5...) * Practise all the modes, keeping a root note in the LH so you *hear* the mode better.

The last point is interesting and something I have become aware of as I got older. In my head I call it "swagger" .. I learn a part or write a part, but when it comes to record or perform it I have to add that swagger, that extra level of expression to the notes and I do think of it like singing with my instrument. It makes a big difference.

Stumbled across Dr mix a couple of days ago, after watching RUclips about the TB303. I don't know why I started watching about the TB303, but ended up watching videos on the prophet 5 and many other synths. Brilliant and inspiring, and would love a decent synth, when I can play one properly. Keep up the great work.

🙏🧡💚👌😎love the way you chosen to explain things I discovered by myself from my childhood. But when you discover playing by yourself, by your brain hearing , you always think you wrongly invented it! So happy to listen you as an ideal professor, giving a sense to my roots😺🤗 ..let my tell a little story. At 2 years old I began to put a finger on a old piano that was at my grand mother home with some notes not working, total chaos, but one thing was magic for me to listen the string's harmonics for hours. With that I was playing some years after short ring melodies with the notes available. At seven I asked to my mother, going to conservatory learning solfege, and rent/buy a piano, but, mum answered me ''as you are left handed and unable to write correctly, you will not be able to learn notes, and play piano''. So if you ask me where is the C, I would have to play notes to tell you, because I kept blocked to try to learn. But, I play expressively with my ten finger. My second daughter as I encouraged her to learn piano, says that she don't know how I play and playing so fast in the erratic way I put my hands , to do some funambulism job over the notes. Mostly this is the brain heating in some music center, guiding the fingers, this is not good, I have to correct lot of defects, but improvisation is what I love, listening those harmonic (chords can be see in an academic way to recreate the strings harmonics . I've had tuned with the square key an old piano in it's entirety, so I had the occasion to recreate the memory from my childhood , wich gives me an advantage over music theory. At the beginning of my times, my grandma, father side, was a singer, opera style, so I learned by listening her melodies, the singers She loved, she was whistling too, and her brother, wich was a clarinetist in the Army, told me I had long thin fingers ideal for piano. Now I'm 63, hand works, my articulated tools are pain and inflated, but, can stop playing a year, everything renew in one hour. One thing good with synths, is using presets for training. Every preset have it's song, it's proper melody!👌🤗. And playing with a 88 heavy piano touch, like my studio logic SL 88, fatar, everyone will understand then, why you should be able to play with an egg in your hand!... An other thing perhaps interesting is to close your eyes in playing to miss you eyes activity generally slowing you hands. Brain is driving your hands faster than you eyes!... So try to play a gimmick very fast for a minute, you will clearly have the sentation of heating in one corner of your brain, and this is your Absolute Ear location🙏🧡💚👌 scientific fact!.... That's why you can use this sensation to be free from what you learned in the conservatory (however those academic lessons are missing for me, and I have ten methods of piano from my daughter, but unable to open one and learn) but this is that. I let my brain being my world, that's why I appreciate largely the work you do in every of your videos, I'm familiar with your claims! (And sorry for my English, I'm french like Edith Piaf...Woman of melody and character just saying!)🧡☺️
After watching this it rang a bell with what you are describing. Vangelis spoke to the principle of emotion when describing the CS80 and the expressiveness over a static on/off/hold synth or piano press. When I got the Osmose it taught me to talk on the keys like no other "dead-key" keyboard or it actually makes you talk or sing because it's an actual instrument and not a programmed in-tune single tone with each key press. Or it behaves like an actual instrument but obviously it is programmed beyond reality. This technology takes you way beyond boring keys. In fact, after playing it you will naturally try to express yourself on a "dead-key" keyboard and it will totally piss you off when absolutely nothing happens that's interesting. Your fingers were always meant to be individual voice envelopes and now is the time for that to happen. There's always a place for percussive fixed notes but if you want to live and breath your sound you need a better transportation system. No, I have no affiliation with Expressive E. I liked what DM was saying and I thought about the Osmose as a good teacher probably mostly because playing becomes exciting as opposed to boring. I hope he gets ones and does a demo for us.

I think the assertiveness also comes from the simplicity of melody - repeating confirming patterns in it, emphasized re-occurring bits. Rhythmic component included. But there needs to be a balance between repeats and unexpected patterns to keep it interesting and not develop into bad ear-worms. :D
Dr.Mix, this video was a very important impact in a short way to explain the essence of what to do and to be. Sometimes i´m in a mood of learning everything in a static way to know all the things in a static way. I was to shy to play and to say something with music and that hurts so much because i can´t let it out. Now i understand that it´s me, and me is the music....thanks a lot for the short cut information of a long lasting way ....stay healthy man
Even though its a paid endorsement, I totally think the best tip here is to use melodics. I was lucky enough to be given a subscription at the start of the pandemic and even though i never had to pay for it (its not super cheap) I think its got to be great value for money if youre serious about learning keys. I'm not the most diligent learner but it became addictive and had me playing for hours at a time and the progress came much faster than I ever expected.

Hmmm...and i sold my piano keyboard a year ago, felt i could never learn to play, just "cat music" came out of it! Now i want it back!!! Seen alot videos about keyboards and playing but this was so down to earth with recognisable musical wisdom that my inpatient mind watched to the end! That deserve a subscription! Really liked the harmony part - I looove to just flow with the sound when "cat" jamming. And also got an eureka moment when talking about "assertiveness" To express yourself with clarity, confidence and joy is key ...to keep the keyboard..... hmmm...NEXT!: get a keyboard again! :)
I was starting music with guitare and The big Beatles Song Book guitare edition. So my fist type is play and learn with something your really like. I started far later with keyboard as i earned my own money, with the basic knowledge of Beatles chords, and which chord fit together. I dint know lot about music theorie, scales and chord theory but just made lot of improvisation with my basic Beatles knowledge. Far later i learned theory with jazz, but didnt really know what to do with before we got youtube. Then only i started to understand how thing fit together and im still learning every day from contentmaker like you Claudio and other. There is an other hint i'm missing in the video is the muscle memory. I translate chords in shapes of finger position and then only search all avaible chords and inversions in one scale. After short time finger and brain knowing where to go for next note . It is important to train other scales not getting lazy. This is needed later to be able to combine scales and notes out of keys.

Writer’s block? Go for a walk and try to record 3 short bits of melody on your voice note app. Then import them on your daw, tune them, and play around them. Voila’: 3 new songs ;-)
Pitch bending make the melody sound more organic😊. Like syncopation can make things interesting. I found singing the sounds out, for creating solos makes adding octaves or 3rds- 5ths.😊 have fun people!❤
well the piano is just one of many voices, can you play the saxphone on keyboard in the same way. you can use it as a sound effects machine.and just place one finger on one key.
One thing I do is create a melody, then see what chords fit this melody. It feels totally opposite to first play a chord progression, then find a melody that fits in with that.
This video is clearly addressed to young people or to those who are approaching the musical world. I would like to say that as far as point 5 is concerned, the deepening of the concept is also important for many experienced and established musicians .... no.5 is very important, I used to hold back a lot...shy like, but then i realised i have way more fun giving it the full boost, smashing those keys and giving my Kronos 2 what it deserves. (a punishment and using the full scale ) The audience LOVE it.
If i understood all you say, i do all except for me the 2. I practice with some music i wrote and i explore with that harmony. Thank you to share this secret. 😁

Cool...I should show my 7 year old this who seems to have some aptitude for keyboard via her interest in the Simply Piano app......no substitute for one-on-one lessons though to teach technique properly but the seeds are there and she "gets" it. Your enthusiasm is contagious and I think a sense of intuition that comes out of a structured grounding is really important.
Omg. I am the worst music maker in the world, but I always was thinking about a melody having 'character or presence'. This is a great video, saved it in my list. i tried ,for years, learnig by doing , trial and error ,.... but since i learned music theory , everything went much easier. Im not an expert, but only learnig the basics made a big difference !
Very true all, a lot of stuff I heard also from my teachers! And in the end, having the guts to play is very important, I guess that's missing with a lot of people, maybe me too... Specially for keyboard players: what helped me a lot, is practising on a real acoustic piano, my Hammond organ teacher also said that. Getting accustomed to the heavier key feeling, and the very sensitive dynamics helps a lot to other keyboard instruments, in my opinion!

After short time finger and brain knowing where to go for next note . It is important to train other scales not getting lazy. This is needed later to be able to combine scales and notes out of keys.

Writer’s block? Go for a walk and try to record 3 short bits of melody on your voice note app. Then import them on your daw, tune them, and play around them. Voila’: 3 new songs ;-)

well the piano is just one of many voices, can you play the saxphone on keyboard in the same way. you can use it as a sound effects machine.and just place one finger on one key.

One thing I do is create a melody, then see what chords fit this melody. It feels totally opposite to first play a chord progression, then find a melody that fits in with that.

no.5 is very important, I used to hold back a lot...shy like, but then i realised i have way more fun giving it the full boost, smashing those keys and giving my Kronos 2 what it deserves. (a punishment and using the full scale ) The audience LOVE it.
If i understood all you say, i do all except for me the 2. I practice with some music i wrote and i explore with that harmony. Thank you to share this secret. 😁

Cool...I should show my 7 year old this who seems to have some aptitude for keyboard via her interest in the Simply Piano app......no substitute for one-on-one lessons though to teach technique properly but the seeds are there and she "gets" it. Your enthusiasm is contagious and I think a sense of intuition that comes out of a structured grounding is really important.

Very true all, a lot of stuff I heard also from my teachers! And in the end, having the guts to play is very important, I guess that's missing with a lot of people, maybe me too...
Specially for keyboard players: what helped me a lot, is practising on a real acoustic piano, my Hammond organ teacher also said that. Getting accustomed to the heavier key feeling, and the very sensitive dynamics helps a lot to other keyboard instruments, in my opinion!
