Song title is a reference to the film with the same name (1984) that captures the essence of the track, which is the absence of a place to call home wandering around the world. After being sent away to a boarding school in Connecticut at the age of 14 she came to Spain and stayed for some time with a family in Santander as they wouldn’t let her come back. California is the place she chose to call her home (this is a whole matter actually) after her journeys as you said, and that’s right to her even if she’s wrong (she mentioned a few times her dilemma with leaving LA)
When Lana was 16 her parents sent her to Spain to study in a boarding school due to her alcohol problem. So that’s why I think that in “I took a train to Spain” deciding to choose Spain is very deliberate
I think this song is about listening to your inner voice telling you about having a change in your life, so when she says when you're right, you're right even when you're wrong I interpret it as she saying to listen to our inner voices even when they lead as to a worse outcome, if you feel that you need a change, make a change; that's not something that is going to go well 100% of the times but still when it goes wrong, you just needed to try it.
“when everyone’s star’s bright, brighter than you are” is definitely about comparing yourself to others. But I interpret it as the star that watches over you, watches over your life path. She thinks everyone else’s future looks brighter than hers.
i love your interpretation of the star! so beautiful to think about it as watching over them, also very somber in this context. thank you for sharing! 😊 ✨
“when everyone’s star’s bright, brighter than you are” and "when you're the only one dancing while they are on the floor" it's all about not matching the energy with the people around you, so when you feel that way, you need a change, you need to move from that place.
When I heard the bridge for the first time, it was a strange feeling.. I’m pursuing a complex professional degree and I see people so ahead of me in terms of career. Often times I would just lay on my bed at night, thinking the same.. how everyone’s star is bright.. so bright, that it makes me question my entire existence.. Then eventually I would catch a glimmer of hope and then somehow convince myself not to be hard on myself. To take time.. to trust the process etc. . . I’m not good at expressing my thoughts.. but I simply couldn’t keep myself from typing.. thank you for reacting to this
i love this song personally. for me this song help me validate my emotional turmoil when i realise i wasn't seen in a friendship (and it did triggered a lot of my trauma responses from childhood) (it wasn't necessarily toxic or abusive) but the reciprocity just wasn't there. so its like i just validate my grief and it felt really healing to validate my grief and also accept and come to terms that when i walk away with non-violence and grace, there's hope that things will get better and healthy dose of hope and just the less i know the better in general
This is my favorite song ever and I was looking at videos that talked about it. This analysis is so amazing and I'm so happy I've discovered your channel, like I'm actually so grateful. You talk so clearly and explained so well. I hope your channel grows , you deserve more viewers omg, thank you for this video and I wish the best for this channel!!💗
love your interpretation! btw I remember lana was sent to boarding school in Spain during her teenage year. so I guess maybe that lyric in verse 2 is a reference to that?
thank you! 😊 and i didn't know that! it could definitely be a reference to that...esp b/c its when she has only "a notebook" in her hand. would make the connotation of that lyric more personal and if it is in fact about boarding school we could also think about youth/the past. thank you for sharing that fact! ✨

you should rly do an analysis of "hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me - but i have it" by her. its lyrically the prettiest song imo.
