We are related to the revolutionary war sharpshooter .... And I was armorer's mate to Billy Stewart since I was 11... He was Camp Parry hi bore champ 24 years 1000 yard... No scope... Ever ! No one could ever beat him while he lived .. he was big on 22s.. we had a rack of Springfield 22 trainers and a Marlin 39A... His personal favorite . In June Billy came home with a 52 GMC half ton loaded to the top with WW2 ammo ! To me this meant sore shoulders... Hee haw....love the swarm

Prescott Az. has always held the title since I was a kid . Rod and Gun Club was retired military and the arsenals were proudly displayed and shot by anxious kids who couldn't wait to fire a real bullet. You know I got more letters answers on this than any other post. I grew up Senate Finance Chairs. nephew my first 33. Gramps was assets and liabilities lawyer for the Pennsylvania Railroad . 23.000 miles of track and 3rd largest police dept. 1917-1963.. Saw most of Canada US and Mexico by 9... at 24 I did 8000 mile circuit of the US on a ten speed. 26 I did the wine country coastal route. In 74 Kissinger and Chase finished up China Accords and flew into JJJ ranch 68 miles north of. Prescott... Larry Hendricks needed a gunman as Mrs Reynolds had thrown a hot pan of water out the back of. Col. Greens mansion and hit a mountain lion square in the face They both screamed and ran other directions thank goodness . So I roll out in a sheriff's car armed to the teeth with the #1 AKC German shepherd in the US. At table silver ambassadorial china and Chippendale clawfoot original... And the queen gave us a stienway for the grand canyon room ... I'm a PhD musician.... So Larry grabs a Winchester and says lion on the roof. I said hold it it's my dog he's found yer wood pile . Gun in hand we peek out the back and he is above us slobbering ... Larry says yer hired.... I worked the ranch as a kid with a vet family my mother the nurse brought up to the mansion for dinner . ORO cowboy. WW2 and Korea. Has killed more men than you've eaten hamburgers. You and the whole town ! At 13 he showed me where we bury the rustlers. At 15 I brought Yavapai 43 Dutch Sturdevant to shoot the ORO just before Col. Green sold out. Ringo and me had moved over from Double O cuz Len Collins was talking sheep. So anyway Dutch missed both barrels on a quail. He gave me his snubnose 38 chief for snakes . In a fast draw holster... And I did... 80 yards 40mph . Through the eye... Uh huh ... Oh yeah every day ya know... So at 19 I'm the diplomatic gunman. Could not beat Richard Chase at chess and through the marines and chasing murderers all over the Bradshaw's and rescuing lost hikers checking licenses forest fires and I was USFS fire crew Camp Wood. Next door to ORO-JJJ. Also surveyed west Yavapai county 1973 .. All of granite basin to chino to perkinsville down the length of west Mingus mountain and all of Faines ranch which is now called Prescott Valley. Well we moved to Prescott for adventure cowboys indians guns and fishing rods.. I've lived all this life never shot anyone or killed another....yet.... and am a firm believer the sheriff should be unarmed and his deputy should have one bullet. I think Mandy and Barney had the right idea. They all just lived each other and ya just can't beat Jesus neither...ya know... It's america... Thank God you can be any dang thing you want. Go anywhere be anyone ... No delays now

Thank you Dr Russ for making today’s show about the Gamo Magnum gen 2 in .22 caliber. I have one and I like it a lot. Ben Pearson is “Shooting Gear Reviews” said that after testing dozens of different pellets he found the most accurate firing pellet for the Gamo Magnum gen 2 in .22 caliber is the JSB Jumbo Heavy 18.13 grain. I have found this to be true in my testing of different pellets as well. Especially at longer distances. Gamo says the gen 2 magnum has to be fired 150 times for it to attain its best accuracy. I look forward to your accuracy tests with this gun. Thank you for great content in all of your videos.
I found that the 15.89 grain JSB Diabolo Pellets and the same weight JSB hades pellets work pretty well too. The H&N barracuda hunter pellets were pretty decent as well.
I never thought to use old phone books for pen testing. It's very precise.

Generation 3i is coming this summer ... and I am anxious to see the price increase and what they provide for that cost increase. Meanwhile gen 2 and gen 1 will sell for less.... so far my Whisper Swarm ... gen 1 is still the most accurate... Dr. Russ
Good stuff Russ. Back in my younger years when I hunted, my dad would scout out deer trails. He would set us up on a stand close to the deer trail and then he would take off and circle around and then drive the deer towards our location. Of course the deer were more worried about the one behind them than where they were headed to. I remember in my youngest years when he would say didn't you see that dear go by! And then he would take me and show me the deer tracks where I should have been looking LOL. DOH!!!!!

Oh, and one more thing, I like your method of determining where the pages were torn as opposed to where the projectile was found since the projectile could easily cover 20 or 30 pages. Of course project out location is still useful information.

Just wanted you to know I am shooting my Air Adventure 22cal at 53 yards hitting a 1/2 inch so if you get a chance review the Air Adventure regulated looking to get the Pull Pup as it’s regulated also only in the 77 for small vermin. PS still no sign of the hog since last time but our woods in Florida are very vegetated & hard to see much except tree level unless you hunt night time with night vision. Well here it is Christmas Eve & have a great one just waiting on my FX Maverick VP 25 cal to get here then I’ll get serious about hunting him down. Keep the faith my friend & we can thank Jesus for allowing us to be here still enjoying family friends & air gunning. God Bless
I love my .22 magnum. I upgraded the scope, did some training and can generally hit a 8 inch steel plate from 100 yards with it. I probably wouldn’t hunt at those ranges as it’s difficult to get accurate, humane, hits on small game, especially with wind, but it’s fun to target shoot.
I had one major problem with it. If I shoot and reload pretty quickly, I noticed a significant drop in velocity at around the 5th shot or so. Once I waited a bit for the gun to “cool off” it was back up to normal. I tested this consistently with a chronograph and confirmed it further in the field when I noticed my long distance shots were suddenly hitting a lot lower but had very little horizontal deviation.
What scope do you use?
@@joseseijo7643 UTG bug buster 3-12x32mm with adjustable parallax. Not a bad scope for the money, but the parallax distance labels are off a bit. The mil dot reticle helps a ton if you know the ranges for the pellets you are using. I put it through probably 1000 pellets and it’s still holding up.
Get the butt stock just barely touching your cheek and shoulder before you squeeze the trigger, and you can get that 8" target at 100 yards to a 3" target. Just hard to hold the gun steady when it is basically just floating on your hands, (let the gun shake it's own groove thing). Just squeezing the trigger can move the gun pretty easily, but you can easily make that trigger lighter too if you need. I am on my second gun. Less than 100 shots through it, and I still have to clean the barrel, (do not let any oil/solvent stay on your breech face after you clean it. Clean it off before you shoot it.), I am going to try something. The O-ring breech seal is actually a sleeve, rounded at the top (for the barrel breech face), and square at the bottom. I think some air can make it around that seal. You can slide it out real easily with out damaging it. I am going to clean the rubber with soap and water, and a bit of solvent for the groove,--and coat the bottom of the sleeve with gasket sealer and put it back in. Let is cure for a few days and clean the barrel before I shoot it again. I shot 10 shots, (taking time to write each value down between shots), and got a variance of 13.8fps (885.5 - 899.3 fps), with the 16.2gr. H&N Hornet. From my testing, I think the gun is a great small game head shot go to 80 yards, if you can shoot springers well. But it does lose it's energy a lot by then. You are one of the few shooting to 100 yards. I put on a little 12 ounce Leupold 3-9 with objective adjustment, and it finally broke after about 5000 mag shots. Lifetime warranty,--makes the $550.00 worth it (had to get mill dot reticle in their custom shop, added about $200.00). I have yet to send it in though.
I think it is a solid 80 yard hunting gun, and target gun to 100 yards. But we always seem to be able to stretch it sometimes.
With my new gun, I have read on the crony 903 fps with the 16.2gr Hornet. My old gun, (which blew a piston seal, diesel as I did not clean the oil off the breech face after cleaning the barrel), I had recorded up to 930fps with that Hornet, (slightly over 31 fpe). I am hoping sealing that O-ring sleeve will get me above 900 fps consistently. Fingers crossed. :)

I have a Field & Target. It doesn't have the power of your Magnum and is very quiet. But, don't be discouraged when you first shoot it. Out to 50yds, with the right pellet for your gun, it is very accurate and has plenty of punch. Because PCP's don't have all the moving mass of a springer or nitro piston, they feel much milder. Your Marauder is also heavy which absorbs any recoil. It is putting out more than it feels like, about 23 ft-lb.
Mine likes JSB 15.89s and Crossman 14.3 domed. I found that some pellets wouldn't group at all. If you're going to hunt with it, the most accurate pellet is your best bet because close in, they're still screaming and after about 40yds they're not going fast enough to mushroom much anyway.
It is a great gun, you'll have a lot of fun with it.

If the projectile exceeds the speed of sound, it will reach the animal before he hears it or the weapon that fired it. Know if your gun, bow or air gun is supersonic velocity or subsonic velocity.

I like your rope setup. I take something similar but I don't haul in the dowels or axe handle. I basically just take the rope, a folding saw (all the dowels and axe handles you want), and a couple of small pulleys. Mechanical advantage can help you drag a deer out of a ravine solo and you can even hoist the deer up to a tree limb for cleaning if you wanted to but I normally just go gutless and pack the meat in quarters.

The swarm maxxim has a 14 inch rifled barrel, and the swarm magnum has a 15 inch rifled barrel , and not 20 and 21 inches as you mentioned.
Paul Karkorian .... glad to hear from you ... I appologize if my info on barrel lengths are wrong. Pyramid Air is where I got my info and they still post it at 20 and 21 inches.... I have not pulled the moderated barrel or magnum suppressor to measure it my self... Dr. Russ
Dr Russ... Other than the magnum which swarm 22 is the quietest if I may ask... I plan on getting one but I prefer the quietest as I want to be as airgun friendly as possible.... And please do a new video of your new Hatsan Blitz... I have access to one & have shot it a few hundred times... Like to hear what you think about the gun nowadays thanks... I love it myself!

That’s generally the max velocity you want in pellets. Anything past that can destabilize the pellet which can reduce accuracy.

Another great video ... I track and trap the bush tail possum which a lot of the places I've trapped is near rivers. A lot of times we've walked up on deer , moments before we'd be talking and walking normally through the bush . I have thought that the river might work as white noise . Just on my observations.

Today might be a little calmer conditions to check accuracy. I know the Magnum well. I give it B- rating IMO . Only from experience owning one and did my best for a year to get excellent accuracy just couldn't. On the fact that it is too powerful. It can group however but I'd say at of the 10/10 shots consistently you're lucky to get about 2 inch group at 50. CONSISTENTLY Of course, that's was my experience. It's more of a Hunters rifle which is perfect for that . But I myself for some reason can't accept a 2inch group LOL. So I ended up selling it . No the Bone Collector Gen 2 is about a happy medium between the Maxim and Magnum. Actually it's the MACH 1 Fussion rifle if you all remember. It's about 22ftlbs. Vs the Magnum which around 26ftlbs. At least when I tested. The Bone Collector Gen2 can easily achieve 1 inch groups at 50yards. I've got a video of that just playing around @ 126 yards hitting 2 inch spinners. Pretty fun .
Where your groups horizontally consistent but vertically off, generally downward? I’ve noticed a drop in velocity with my 22 magnum when shooting rapidly without giving the gun much time to rest. Like anything after the 5th shot or so would shoot low.
@@Typhoonbladefist I would say yes and no the gun did stay Fairly consistent. However it is very Hold sensitive because of the power output. It takes a lot of concentration to keep the groups tight. The rifle is not very forgiving you have to be on target every time. Anyhow I decided to sell it and get something less powerful like the gamble sworn bone collector Gen. 2. In my opinion the Woodstock adds a little bit more weight even though the gun is a little less powerful but not by much. It can group tighter more consistently compared to the magnum. Anyhow that's just my experience with it.
Great information however I prefer the Maxxim over the Magnum, it's just me. Happy Hunting 😁👍

I have heard, but have not confirmed, that bone collector delivers better accuracy than Magnum.

Skip ... good to hear from you .... with more money, there are always better options. FX is a good choice since it is winning most of the competition shoots these days... but can easily cost almost $2,000 ... However, a good break barrel makes an excellent survival gun when you have lost the power and don't have a hand pump ... My main concern is that the barrel from the point where the pellet fits in ... is at least 20 inches ... and Gamo provides that... some Crosman break barrels do ... and a few Hatsan ... to my knowledge... @@drsrussandpaula For a break barrel hunting gun,---there are not many, if any better options IMO. My biggest factor is hitting close to 30fpe, (but a top quality 25fpe .22 would be real close). Most if the "Top of the line" break barrels that cost more, (I have not seen one), I will have to assume are better quality than this Gamo, (the name does not really scream---"quality" or top performance. Bad name IMO, lol), but they don't seem to want to make a 30fpe gun. That can be the difference between a 50 yard shot an an 70 yard shot in terms of energy left. I have had one Hatsan, the .30 cal break barrel,---and I did not need my engineering degrees, (one is a quality engineering degree), to see I will not buy one again on the basis of quality, (but I did get the difficult gun to shoot well), but also on the basis of where it is made, islamic turkey. I thought thy hated "profit"? Then I won't give them any, anymore. This Gamo is really very good quality. The only problems I had with my first one have a big factor of "me doing something wrong" involved.
The only thing I absolutely do HATE about Gamo, (made in Spain), is that you can buy the gun from them or a retailer, but you have to go through a firearms dealer to get parts. I have to check if they have a preferred list in the states who will order for me, but the ones I called did not want to mess with air gun parts. We just can't stop lawyers from being stupid.
All together, price, power, quality, accuracy, (best barrel lock up I ever had, no movement in either direction), trajectory, reputable business,---I think it is best hunting or target shooting break barrel on the planet.

Personally I use one that has a glass etched reticle , when looking for a replacement keep that in mind. Mine uses a UTG . Most don't like them but I have had zero issues with them. Hawk makes some sweet scopes but can cost as much or than the gun itself .

Thank you for nice review as usual. But I wonder what is use of break barrel rifle (basically single shot gun) when you can get a decent pcp rifle with more power for less money (Beeman Chief II/commander)? That cocking action takes a lot of effort and obviously makes rifle useless for taking a quick follow up shot. I thought pcp pump would be big cost/ drawback, but then I found that there are inexpensive pcp pumps, and there are lots of videos online showing you how to maintain/repair these pumps. So it seems pcp rifles have it all over break barrel as far as I can see.
PCP's do have it all over break barrels and springers ... however, some cant afford the hand pumps ... compressors or scuba tanks ... others want a survival air gun when power is out ... and others don't have friends to show them how good a PCP is... or a place where they can try them .... so they stay in the old rut ... IMO, a pump would be fine for some kind of survival if you had to. But other than that, if you like to shoot, I doubt you will be sticking with the pump, and cash out a grand for a compressor, bottles. This .22 break barrel actually makes more power than a lot of PCP's .22 and smaller. A bigger cal uses more air, so the PCP's take over.
I think if I were in survival mode, I would want a bigger caliber PCP, (I think .30 - .35 is a great size, for the best chance of survival), and of course,--a damn good hand pump,---because your life may depend on that too. This gun for a back up may be a good idea. Go a year,--I bet you will need it.
PCP in my country requires a License like a normal gun but .177 and .22 Springer or IGT piston rifles dont need license

My swarm maxxium shoots better than my Hatsan Flash QE. And more reliably. If you buy a pcp rifle, buy a nice one. I spent 300 bucks and I got what I paid for. I’m scared sometimes because of the way the Hatsan groups. I don’t want to take game with it! It shoots pellet on pellet, then gaps out to 3 inches in five shots. I use very HQ pellets, and ive tried many kinds.
I don’t recommend Hatsan products, but I went on the cheap end. Atleast don’t try any of the cheaper models.
I have the Hatsan Gladius 25 long which is very accurate , but WOW is that thing HEAVY 10 pounds unscoped. 12 pounds with my current scope . When I need extra traction during snow months I throw that thing in the back of my car to hold it down . I have the maxxim also .
@@joedokes8641 sick man! I can’t keep a solid group with this rifle. Even off a bi pod I get 2 or pellet on pellet groups then it starts going wild. I’ll have a pellet land low, then high, the to the left or right. Like wtf? My air tank holds pressure.
@@fullsendsurvival7804 Try a different pellet , some guns are very finicky and usually the JSB brand comes to mind they seem to shoot well out most guns . Next it could be you're scope . Ive been there shot many of rounds only to find out this isn't working . Also check the barrel it might need cleaning ? My .177 caliber Maxxim likes the super cheap Winchester brand pellets 9.6 grain round nose , tried the higher end ones it didn't like them . Who knew ? Also changed the scope out . My Gladius Long in 25 caliber likes the Exact Kings 25.39 grains , have never tried anything else . It has a Hawk scope sighted with 5 rounds ( no drama ) . What scope are you using ?

Pellets are too heavy and the recoil pops it right out. Heaviest pellets I use are 25.39, and if I use the jsb beast 33.95 I use 5 pellets and the mag stays.

We learned that the reason pellets popped out was that we did not push them in far enough ... you may need a pen or pencil ... because the black rubber retention band must clamp into the waist of the pellet ... and it wont unless those pellets are pushed in a little deeper than we were doing ... Is the magnum loud? Does it have to break the sound barrier to get that extra force? I have the maxxim gen 2 and as long as I shoot lead pallets the noise level stays low. Iwould be interested in upgrading if noise isn't an issue with the Magnum.
Have the Magnum 22 . Very little difference in noise . Also lighter pellets can make more noise as FPS increases .
No, it’s not very loud at all.
You don’t want to shoot near the sound barrier with pellets because they can become unstable which reduces accuracy. I’m told around 850 feet per second is generally good.
I believe slugs don’t typically have this problem however you aren’t going to be shooting slugs anywhere near those speeds in this gun because of their weight.
The impulse force is a factor of the change in momentum over the change in time. Momentum is mass multiplied by velocity. With this in mind, shooting a lighter pellet faster may not necessarily increase the force applied to the object.
If you want a stronger force, get a stronger air gun like a PCP. Shotguns, for example, can increase their power by using shells with larger powder loads behind the slugs/pellets. Air rifles are generally stuck with what they have, a piston in this case.
You can alternatively get different forms of pellets like hollow points which slow down faster on impact which means more force applied to a smaller area, which you could think of as generally more destructive. Think of how it feels to fall on a bed compared to falling on dirt. The bed doesn’t hurt as much because you come to a stop slowly.
There’s plenty of videos on different pellets out there you should check out.
The gen 2 and 3 seem to have so many magazine problems. Glad I got the gen 1.

The pellets need to be pushed in far enough ... perhaps even with a pen or pencil ... so that the black rubber retention band is into the waist band of the pellets... if not ... they pop out.... none the less... the gen 1 is easier to sight in and make your groups tight.... Jose Seijo ... it is important to use a scope designed for break barrels as those guns and springers will tear an expensive regular scope up with its awkward kick. Go to Fieldsupply.com and look at their refurbished and new scopes from Hatsan and CP (Center Point from Crosman) .... I buy the CP ... they are lower than half price... come with high mounts ... and looks like new.... for about $50 and $70 .... buy the more expensive if you are a hunter... Dr. Russ

After going through (3 or 4) $100.00 scopes and a Vortex scope, (of which I have broke every one), I bet the bullet and went with a small Leupold that was said to hold up. (from less expensive Freedom series line). Well, the scope is 3 bills, and another 2.5 bills to put a mill dot reticle in it, (it had adjustable 33mm objective, 3-9 and only weighs 12 ounces, great glass),---but it has a lifetime warranty, and they told me they honor air gun usage. I will see, because it broke too, (after over 5000 mag shots, a record for me by far for a scope holding up), and I am having it fixed. To me, if they honor the lifetime warranty---it is worth it. I have broken scopes all over the damn place. :)

Dr Russ, isn't the Magnum 1300 fps?
Most manufactures mainly Gamo tend to exaggerate FPS claims , its a marketing ploy to sell their products. If you have access to a chronograph then you can see this for yourself . The lighter the pellet the more FPS can be achieved . Also lighter pellets aren't as accurate . 1300 FPS is probably a alloy pellet not lead . Alloy pellets can also be lounder .
I was getting around 850 FPS with the 15.89 grain JSB pellets which is actually perfect, you don’t want to be shooting pellets much faster than that since they destabilize near the speed of sound.
Great video! I'm new to the air rifle thing - picked one up for pest control. Can anyone tell me if it's harmful for the rifle to be locked and loaded when not in use? By the time I get it cocked and insert a round, I'm often too late.

I wouldnt leave them cocked for longer than that ... and loaded could make them unsafe in your home ... especially if kids or grand kids visit.... If you are using the scope it came with ,( my opinion only) replace it . On mine the reticle was turning at less than a 100 rounds . A glass etched reticle works best on break barrels . Most will fail eventually .
"Backyard friendly" is a relative term, and I'm not speaking of aunt Shirley and cousin Eddy. I'm speaking (writing) of proximity. Your "backyard" is an extensive expanse.
My "backyard" is a 9 yard "long" (diagonally, and Imperially) patio in an HOA community of 52 buildings, of close proximity, each which consist of four houses ("quads"). So my backyard friendly and your backyard friendly are vastly different. Therefore, if my math is correct, I'd need more muffle/inch than you.
So, Dr. Russ, can't you afford to have a kitchen of your own??????

Take it from me sir, if you swap those disposable hand warmers for naphtha fuel hand warmers, the kind they been making since the 30s or whenever, you'll never go back to the disposable.
Maybe disposable for feet and gloves, etc.
But buy some real peacock hand warmers for a couple bucks on ebay. Whether brand new or decades old, they are incredible. Jon-e used to be popular in the US. I would not recommend them though, they have gaps between the elements so they stink. But the giant one is insanely hot.
A few dollar bottle of naphtha from home depot will last all season if not multiple. A medium sized hand warmer will last all day and night. And be hot hot.
Don't use lighter fluid, it has a worst smell. Also, zippo brand hand warmers suck even though they look cool.
Two on you kidneys or just inner pockets and you'll be very warm.
I love them, I collect them. Ask me questions if you want. But peacock is the real brand still. You can still buy them new.
I've also had some luck with super cheap Chinese warmers from ebay.

Edit. Also, don't put the flame or otherwise ever touch the element, even when cool. They are very easy to ruin, but tough to shock and vibration. Just put the flame near the catalyst and it'll glow. It's hard to tell they are lit. Half fill them if you need high heat fast. Fully filled is a bit less hot for a few hours

Hello Dr. Russ. I'm brand new to air rifles; I have a question. My picatinny rail keeps coming loose. What do you recommend?
Emilioflores ... that is not good. Consider taking it off and reinstalling it with "Lock tite" or any nail polish if screws are holding it on. Also consider a super glue after you clean all the contact points with a good cleaner or lighter fluid. Lastly, reinstall with an epoxy glue (2 parts). Try to line it up exactly like the original alignment. Assuming you need some extreme adjustments on the scope to make it accurate, consider taking the scope off while leaving the bottom of the scope rings on... and then putting several pieces of thin plastic inside the rings before putting the scope back on. Consider reviewing several of my scope videos before starting. Dr. Russ

How hard is it to break the barrell? Can the spring be lubed or oiled?

Please share with us your conclusion on this subject. I recommend the Maxxim for you ... and the cocking pressure is the same regardless of the caliber ... 177 ... or 22.... Thomascarboni ... it is good to hear from you and all the way from Italy too, and thanks for the compliment. I have not changed barrels on any of my Gamo air rifles. They aren't made to change barrels easily. They also dont have real or good suppressors in my opinion and are difficult to take off and change. You might do better by just buying an additional air rifle the way you want it, rather than to try and change the barrel.
