    I've just purchased a Gamo Wildcat Whisper for rats on the farm. I have been shooting rifles, handguns, and shotguns all of my life. I did not expect the learning curve involved in shooting a break barrel air rifle. I appreciate this video! I am confident that you are taking days if not weeks off of my education process, just by putting this information out there. Thank you!

    I don’t know what made sense to me finally, but I just went out and re-sighted my Gamo and followed your tips and I’m hitting bullseyes at 25 yards back to back now with no problems. Thank you!

      Good ... consider watching all of my videos on accuracy and pellets in our channel because that Gamo is capable of hitting bullseyes out to 40 yards and hitting paper at 65 yards. Dont forget to use good heavy pellets and spray with some lube.... for consistency and power. Dr. Russ

    Rapid reload is critical for myself with going after squirrels. They destroy my irrigation systems and dig up my orchard. I did a test with a friend to see how many times I could shoot a can about 20 yards away while he fired and then reload and fire again. I got 6 extra shots than his two.

    I spent $20 on Amazon and purchased a 20g scale with .001 accuracy to weigh each pellet. You would be amazed at the huge variability in weight, especially with the Hatsan Vortex and Crosman Premium rounds. H&K has the tightest specs with almost a perfect bell curve, but amazingly they're all below the listed grain weight. I use a 7-day pill box to separate the rounds in .1 gr increments, so when I'm shooting I know I have a tight weight span.

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  2 года назад +10

      Tom .. it is good to hear from you... another way to determine the difference in pellets is to check out the thickness of the pellet skirts ... a thin skirt is more likely to spread wider with air behind it ... trapping all of the compressed air behind it. Another with a bent skirt would be more likely to allow air to pass around it. Consider resizing your pellets with the proper resizing die... also consider using a pellet lube which helps pellets be more uniform in trapping air behind them.. Dr. Russ

      @@phantomshtter And you would be wrong, because the scale comes with calibration weights that always come in right on the money. It wouldn't make sense that the scale always weighs the calibrators correctly, but somehow weighs the pellets incorrectly.

    One little bitty thing that has helped me with some pellets is to "when you are shooting for burgers" is to make sure your pellets are round. One way to do that is to use a dapping tool.

    Great tips there Dr Russ. Always a pleasure to watch. I like the hat in this video. A new one?? 🙂 I've got an old BSA Mercury that I've had since I was about 10 or 11 years old. I've recently found the joy of shooting it again, a Springer, after all these years of using pre charged air rifles..

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  3 года назад +5

      Emay Russell ... good to hear from you again. Those old springers are hard to forget. Keep in mind that you have leather washers in it ... in front of the spring that pushes the air out. After a dozen years ... they begin to fall apart ... especially if they had oil get to them.... I am guessing that your springer is going to quit on you sooner than later. Consider replacing those leather washers or putting some silicone on them to bring them back to life. Please keep us in your loop ... Dr. Russ

    Great advice! Washing is especially needed when it comes to chinese, no name pellets found of flea market. As for the open sight's sight picture, what you described is the exact reason why I hate most of the modern "fiber optics" (TruGlo and similar): typically, they are rounded, and the front one is usually too thick so they both (front one and the rear one) often cover ("mask") the target. I had never had such problem with the "old school" sights ("iron sights") mounted on any "traditional" airguns, carbines, rifles. Alas!, trendiness, fashion, glitter and glamor...

  • @spinster4000

    My first airgun was a Gamo shadow whisper in .17, I loved it! It was fairly accurate at 30 yards with the H&N Terminators at 7.25 grams and held 1 inch to sub 1 inch groups at 30,35 and almost 40! It's a great gun and I got almost no complaints, except. The trigger. Its awful, another thing is how loud it is, springers are VERY loud (for air rifles) and on a DCB meter it measured 106.6 and my Ruger .22 with 710 fps CCI "quiets" measured 110.5. It's starting to fall apart a tiny bit and in general I'm just looking for an upgrade, I'm leaning towards PCP but I don't want to spend over 300 for an entire setup and the way its looking I might. I'm deciding between Diana Stormrider in .22 (with .17 its nice but not so great for hunting) or the UMAREX Gauntlet. Not sure how these guns are or if anybody would recommend them but looking for some assistance. Thanks!

    Dr. Russ hello. I have to point something respectfully. In regards of the 10x Cartridge jamming on the Gamo Swarm Maxxim 10X 2G. You are right and wrong. Yes it jams sometimes when Low quality generic ammo is used, my mistake. I switched to Gamo, RWS or J & Bs. Never a Jam again. Use better AMO !!

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  2 года назад +2

      Thank you for the tip Sergio M.... the real cause was brought to our attention in one of the comments ... and that was the fact that you can shoot most any ammo out of the Gamo Swarm family ... but you need to make sure that the black rubber retention band in the magazine nestles into the narrow waist line of the pellet ... and often this requires that you push some pellets in deeper with a ball point pen or whatever... thanks for sharing Sergio M ... Thank you for your videos these are all great tips! I've owned so many different air rifles over the years, and for the money Gamo has some decent rifles for the money for sure. My biggest complaint with Gamo is quality control with the internals. I have learned that the first thing to do is tear the rifle down and de-burr the Piston tube, I have not found one yet that was not riddled with sharp edges I assume that upon assembly caused the Piston seal to be damaged on the edges when they install it down the tube. After some deburring and new seals I have a Gamo swarm that will keep right up in accuracy with my tuned Air Arms mk2 at 20 / 25 yards 90% of the time. And of course finding the right pellet for your gun can take a while but when you do it's worth it. Thanks for your videos!

    Question:
    Do you know why Gamo won’t let you order a rifle without a scope? As you know, their scopes are low quality. I even asked them to install one of their upgraded scopes and let me pay the difference. They said I had buy the rifle remove the inferior scope, send the scope back, then they would send me the better quality scope. That doesn’t make any since to me.
