The series begins about 6 years after the death of the family patriarch, Thomas Barkley. Although he is never shown in the series (other than a painting and a statue), the character of Thomas Barkley is referred to as a major plot point many times. The character of Heath Barkley is introduced in episode one as the illegitimate son of Tom Barkley. His presence and claim to the Barkley name is the focus of many of the dramatic plots in season one. While the successful and rich are often portrayed in present day as the unscrupulous villains, the Barkley family is portrayed as upstanding citizens of Stockton, models of justice and fairness, often going against popular sentiment to uphold the rights of the underdog.
In the first episode, Hannah’s advice to Heath “be merciful and walk humbly” is straight out of the Bible and one of my all time favorite verses: Micah 6:8

Beah Richards would next appear in three iconic movies, all released in 1967: Hurry Sundown, In the Heat of the Night, and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, for which she received an Academy Award nomination. Later, she would win two Emmy Awards for guest starring roles in Frank’s Place and The Practice. She died in 2000, age 80.
She was remarkable in all rhree films. Kudos!

Heath's mother's last name was Thomson. Even though it says she died in 1872, she actually died in 1876 a month before Heath came to the Barkley ranch. In the episode palms of glory Heaths age is revealed to be twenty-four, so he was born in 1852 which would make her twenty-two when she had him. And yes Heath had indeed fought in the Civil War. If he was born in 1852 then 10 years later would be 1862, if at best he fought in 1865 he'd have been 13 years old. @@LivCartwright.

Your very welcome. And yes Heath was thirteen by the time the war ended. I thought it was weird at first too when I did the math since he was still only a child but if you look it up on Google a child back then could join as long as he had consent from his Mother, or father no matter the age.
Heath shouldn't be asking if hannah is still alive because he should be sending her money every month, even if it's only a few bucks, enough to eat anyway, i don't like that !
