Stephen, you're doing a much better job of training and pruning your grapes. Ours are a tangled mess. Great info!
Thank you Patrick. I hope to have them not only produce food for me but be a nice addition visually to my garden. the way I figure it the better I do controlling them the more I can cram in the other spaces :)
Very good tutorial and info Stephen!
I am really glad you enjoyed it !
Rewatching a lot of your old videos, your channel is pure gold Stephen! And since I live in zone 3 (in Norway) a lot of what you say applies directly to my conditions as well. P.S. I love your positive outros, hope you have a great day as well! :)
Very nice Stephen. Great demonstration on training. Thanks for sharing........Ann
Thank you Gideon Gardens for the kind words :)
Thank you!
Looking good Stephen! In a few years you should have lots of grapes!
I hope so ! I loved how nice they look now :)
Nice grape video and I agree about the Velcro tape its really good for tying plants and doesn't really hurt the pant.
no damage yet :)
I remember when you started your project
vines are looking nice, and thanks for a nice video --how to
Thanks dave Ill make sure to keep you in the loop on how they do!
My method was to just tie all the vines to a bamboo pole and call it a day. Explains why my vines boo at me when I walk by. Good info and demo Stephen! :)
Ray I have picked that up for my tomatoes. or in the case of the beef stake you sent out this year just let it run out of the bed lol. I am trying to see if I can both make food and make it look nice. I figure the more I control them the more other stuff I can plant in the spaces :)
Thanks for the info I just bought my first plant today
Glad I could help! Mine are just budding out!!
thank you
Good info, Stephen! I want to get into growing grapes myself, eventually!
I would love to see how you do my friend!
Thats going to look nice mate hope you get lots.I am sure you will.
This year I won't get any but next year I hope to get at least a few so I can sample them ;)
Nice setup
Thank you my friend. Hopefully it's up to the task :)
superrrr mannnnn!
I knew you would like that one :)
your video is awesome , it makes me miss my garden
Are you not able to get to your garden these days? that is absolutely no good!!
Thanks for the kind words my friend! I really appreciate them!
Sadly no had some health issues the beginning of the summer and then had a falling out with the land owner so everything I owned is still out there and lots all my supplies , my seeds .my garden tools nd basically everything I was using , so this year is a wash for it all and now I have to decided if I want to start over again next season. was a total let down , do not even have seeds anymore
I am so sorry my friend ! Hope
You get better and set up for 2015
well it is one good thing about gardening this year might be a bad one but there is always next year and hoping to a better one :) have to stay positive
That's they say to do it !
My frontenacs are starting their 3rd year now...so I was hoping for an update on yours.
Grapes are a wonderful ornamental and fruit bearing vine. This week we show you how we are taking care of and training our grapes vines!

Thanks for this *****. I planted a white table grape this year and this will help!
I am very glad I could help!
Thanks for sharing, I love the Velcro strips so you can reuse them once it gets established.
Absolutely ! They are so great !
Thank you for showing us how to grow grapevine. My plant is almost 4yrs old, but comes out new leaves only in end of August and again in September it's time to hibernate. What should I do?
Great idea with the velcro tape. I have never heard of it. I wonder if regular velcro would be cheaper?
it would work but regular velcro is typically abrasive on the catch side and may damage the plant. this is a good one just non-abrasive. I think a role of this is 2-3$
Your grapes are looking great Stephen! How many years do you think until you can harvest some fruit from them?
I should get some fruit next year on the concords and likely the following year for the frontenacs but who knows.
You may have to change your channel name to the Alberta Urban Vineyard. Have a great day Stephen!
I was thinking that lol. The Whiskey Tango Brewery ;)
Thanks for the tips! I lost one of my grape plants over our nasty winter!
I am glad I could help. What variety did you lose ?
***** It was a Frontenac, although I have difficulty pronouncing it! LOL
I'll have to protect mine :)
***** I also lost a combination apple tree and strawberries. Alberta can be a risky place to grow!
Oh wow that's crazy ! I have lost a thing or two but I guess I have been lucky
sir how I can boost my grape vine growth with in days
My question is how to start care in the winter ❄️ for grapes plants
HI there! I have a shirt almost the same as yours! I decided to keep my grape vine and see how it goes....I returned the one i had before and I got another one that is seedless and i am being training as well. I want it to be like a T shape if you know what I mean. I need post pictures of it soon.
I would love to see photos of your trellis. You can create a T-trellis using the same techniques I used and if you have more open space I would recommend using 4x4 posts as the basis and a T cross on top. that way you can great a 3 dimensional T on top! Good luck and let me know how you do!
I plan to put in grapes this spring. But did I hear you say once that you also grow kiwis? I really would like to grow kiwis,
I live in zone 5, just below you in MT. Also I have some more questions for you about what will grow in this area since I am new here.
Welcome to the community and sorry I was so late at replying. It's been a busy time here.
I was going to grow kiwi until I found out the hard way I am allergic to them.
There is plenty you can grow in your zone. If you like I can shoot you a clip I did on perennials.
There are many components to table grape plants for sale. One plan I discovered that successfully combines these is the Grape grower folio (check it out on google) definately the most useful guide that I have ever heard of. Check out all the amazing info.
How are the Frontenac doing? Are they still going strong? Where did you buy them? I live in the Edmonton area and am hoping I can grow these grapes.
They are doing great! I had my first harvest this year and they were very very good!!
I got my vines at Greenland Garden Center in Sherwood Park. I would recommend planting them in the spring.
Where did you buy them from? I'd like to plant some.
Greenland Garden Center.
Can you bury grapes the way you would bury water melon, or pumpkins to make that mass into roots?
You can in the spring when it's just budding. The buds will swap from leafs to roots. That said most grapes will push great root systems in one season. Propagation of grapes are often done with cuttings in the spring with several buds buried.
which grapes are you growing in Alberta?
How old were those plants when you shot this video? I have 3 year old plants that are supposed to bear fruit this year. Also, how many inches or feet past the top wire do you let the vertical shoot grow before you pinch off so that it forces side shoots? One other questions. How long do you let the horizontal shoots that go along the wire left and right grow before you pinch those off? This was a very helpful video for me.
+Patrick Pittman my vines have been in place for 2-3 years and all should bear this year. After the fruiting clusters come out in the spring you can pinch them off a few leaves past the shoot.
As for how far I let them go really I am just starting to shape them as they are more established and will be pruning them to fit the space they have.
vertical is usually 2-3 feet past the top wire.
Ok I think I understand everything you're saying except for the part about the horizontal branches (the cordons) that are going left and right on the wires. My limited understanding is something about letting those cordons grow horizontally along the wire for about 8 feet on both sides and then you pinch them off to force fruiting spurs to occur. Is that correct? What is confusing me is when you say, "you can pinch them off a few leaves past the shoot."
the horizontals I usually keep them with in their area. usually 3-4 feet from the main trunk.
Once they hit that 3 or 4 foot point, do you pinch them off and then that forces fruit clusters, or do the fruit cluster form before you pinch the cordons off?
fruit clusters come out first thing in the spring. I pinch the growth off in June or July.
Hope for an update on grapes, please make a new ideo about how they doing
They are doing great!! I will be posting a harvest picture on FB/IG in a few weeks
@@AlbertaUrbanGarden thank you, i m really interested in how big the plants grow. I get excited and planted grapes everywhere
