- I was excited to find out from my Grand Fathers last year that grapes could be grown in Zone 3!! They both were so nice as to send heirloom concord grapes last year to me!
This year after I built a full garden trellis I realized my plans for Arctic Kiwis were not to be... I apparently am allergic and cant have them... so I decided to get some more GRAPES!!!
Grapes are one of the older domesticated plants! There is even evidence to support the fact that they were domesticated in the middle east between 10,000 and 8,000 years ago for food and wine!
When selecting your grape types doing some research is essential! They are grown in a variety of locations and climates around the world. Selecting one that will do great in your region is important!
I chose Frontenac and Frontenac Gris grapes for my garden! They were developed by the university of Minnesota and are great for eating, making preserves and Wine! Check out their website at the following URL: www.grapes.umn.edu
When ever you pick perennials that will be there for years and years is to select a location they can be permanently. With Grapes you will need a trellis as well as they vine. Check out how I built mine in this how-to video. • How-to build a Simple ...
This week I show you how to plant them in raised beds for the best possible results! Check out this playlist for more great grape tips in colder zones! • Growing Grapes in Alberta

I'm so happy that you can grow grapes in Zone 3! That is a great find and I'm so pleased you have the chance of growing them:) I love that simple way of securing them and they look nice and ready in their new home, great video *****!
Thank you Huw !! I can't wait to see the plants take off !
Another great perennial in the Alberta Urban Garden! I'm glad to hear that there are grapes hardy to zone 3. You'll be enjoying them in no time!
On Thursdays for the next few weeks I'll be adding more perennials :) so many great fun plants !
They sure are growing quickly!! Do you remember if in your first year you got grapes ?
That's great to hear, *****! My wife planted our grapes many years ago in a very shady location. I don't think we had any grapes until I cut down a number of trees. You won't have to wait nearly as long as we did. :D
Mine get full sun and should not have any issue :)
How excellent I hope I get some this year :)
I have leaves again! Thanks for encouraging me to wait I might have dug it up and missed it! I did prune off the dead wood but it's growing. I'm so excited!
My friend all you need is a little growth to go nuts ! You should be good this year my friend !
I am really glad I could help!
This is exciting for you guys! Now you will have homegrown grapes too for your wine :)
Good information. Thanks
I am so very excited to grow them !! I can't wait !
I am glad you both enjoyed the video
good demo - thanks! I just planted my 3rd vine this year, a white table grape called Lakemount. I really like the trellis system you devised too.
I am glad you enjoyed the video and trellis ! My father grand father and I figured it out !
neat idea for the trellis. Thanks for sharing
Thank you! They work quite well! I had a beautiful green wall this year !
Well that sort of answered the question I asked on the trellis clip ;-)
Haven't had grape jam in ages..
Cheers mate..
Rob you should be able to grow some insanely good grapes there !
I'll check the trellis video !
***** Some folks down the road had a great set of vines but the new owners pulled them out so thy could have more lawn :-/
Sad really..
That's terrible ! I hope when I leave this place we get owners whom love gardening !
Cool vid about your grape plants, Stephen! You`ll be running around half drunk on your coming uploads from all that vine you`ll receive! :)
I planted a grape vine in the greenhouse last year, and didn`t expect it to carry so much fruits. I`m overwhelmed by the amount of fruits developing on it.
I`ll may take some cuttings later and try to grow them outside to see if they tackle our winter.
I`m so happy there are so many northern gardeners testing out different plants to grow in this climate. Much learning, that would have taken a lifetime to learn on our own.
Good job, mate!
Halvor.
Yours are the blue variety right ? That is so very cool!
I am keen to try cuttings and propagation ! I have some heirlooms I really want to propagate !
I think it's great we get to learn from each other ! It sure does help having you and the other northern gardeners around !
*****
Yes, it`s a blue variety. Wonder how they taste. I make a lot of different fruit juices in the fall, and will try that with the grapes as well, -especially if they`re too sour eating from the vine. :)
I cant wait to see them!
Hey Stephen! I'm back from Manitoba for a week. You really seem to be looking forward to that wine! I got all my watermelons and my cantaloupe planted. I moved half my peppers outside from the green house. I have 9 varieties fruited already. I have hundreds of peppers on the vine. I ate a nice fat red Gypsy hybrid from the garden with my eggs this morning. It was great! The six Saskatoon berry trees that I planted have all got leaves on them. So things are going great. I hope to get the rest of my garden planted over the next few days. I am going to have to head back to Manitoba so I can get some rest. Have a great day!
Sounds like things are coming along ! You have a busy week ahead of you!
How was work this turn around ?
***** The work was tough! There was ice on the lake until May 20th. I did do a limited amount of fly fishing the first few days. I hit it a little harder after that. I have several other friends that have seasonal sites on that lake. When we were not fishing, we sat around and ate Saskatoon berry pie or drank beer. The only bad part was that the morel mushrooms had not popped yet. I have quite a few late spots and I will them next week when I go back. Have a great day!
We are having a late spring too. Next turn around is going to be good.
Great video on your future perennials grapes. I was wonder if you could take some paint and some stencils and paint the boards behind the plant to mark it for the future. The little cards that come with them get lost pretty quickly. Figured you could save the card for the inside and keep all the important information for it safe. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing your new beds and trellis

That's a great idea ! I'll have to ask my wife to paint it as she will do something not only nice but beautiful !! Great suggestion !!
Thanks Wes !
Thanks for providing the variety of those green grapes you planted ***** I'm going to be on the lookout for them now, I much prefer green grapes over concordes!
The Frontenac Gris is a great choice !!
With all this wine you'll be making, are you thinking of exporting some, you would have a very interested customer right here my friend :D Good job, as always!
That might be possible you are in Canada Afterall !
Hello. Where abouts in Alberta are you? That nursery where you got your plants looks awesome! I'm excited for your grapes!
I am in the Capital region the greenhouse is Greenland Garden Center in Edmonton.
I am super excited about them as well!
What do you use to control the aphids?
What grapes are hardy to zone 2? Oh it was the University of Minnesota that worked on developing cold hardy grapes. I heard it tends to be white grapes that grow furthest north & the wine tends to be dry or semi-dry & more grapes are for table grapes, juice, jams & jellies?
Can you tell me the concord grape variety you planted?
I am so very excited about this episode ! We built the beds and trellis all for our new grapes !! Today's episode we plant grapes in Zone 3 !!! Check out how we do it !

I archived this one Stephen, gotta try grapes for next year
Did you get frost last night? It got cold here!
No frost for me ! I might be able to propagate some for you my friend !
*****
That would be awesome
It depends on if I get winter kill or not I'll let you know in the spring.
Mmm Jam or wine lol Good info.
All of these types are great for jam as well. I just have no idea how to do that lol.
Who was it that said make wine not jam? Or something like that ;-)
I like the way you think ;)
I like wine I also like a jam I need to learn wine making. I have an old red vine I dont know what it is. It puts out but not to sweet grapes and good wine always helps a music jam ;-)
That grape sounds perfect for wine. You end up adding sugar to make the wine ;)
Have you thought about picking up a variety that would be good for "Ice Wine"? Since the grapes for ice wine don't get their full flavor till they literally freeze on the vine, it sounds like they may be suitable to your area.
Oh I am going to have to look into that. No I did not look at that but I will. Thank you so much !
I have a south facing wall with large trellis for my grape plants. Would this be my best option? I am in zone 3 Alberta
Should work great !
I see rhubarb AND grape wine in your future. :)))
Absolutely my friend !
cool video Stephen i too am on the grape adventure this year lol
My friend I can't wait to see how you so!
I cant wait either lol !
What types are you doing this year ?
Concord
i just want to start with an easy one mostly for looks but also for GRapes
I planted a red grape last year. it's good for our zone 5. it started to get leaves again this spring. But we had a frost mid May and those leaves died. Now the stem just looks dead. should I prune it down or leave it? Do you think it will come back?
Leave it for now. It might bud out again on the wood or come up from the ground again. My Heirloom Lampi one is not doing much but I have hopes it will bud !
Those late frosts eh! They are terrible !
I'm not sure but I think I see little buds forming again. the inner wood is still green!
That's excellent !!
What zone are you in. I have moved from southern Ontario to northern Ontario 2B :(. I love gardening and need to learn
Zone 3 but you can grow grapes there. It's where I got my heirloom ones from !!
I have been researching fruits for our zone. I can't believe how much we CAN grow here. Of course we have to get the right variety and pollinators but we can grow apricots, apples (not crabapples, real apples) , pears, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, haskhop berries, plums, grapes, kiwi, saskatoon, cranberries and gooseberries and even a few types of cherries. I knew about a few of those but that we can grow that much sounds so good to me. I have found some peach trees good until zone 2, but I have not yet found anyone online who is successfully growing them. Have you found anybody growing peaches in Alberta?
I grow a lot of them :)
I don't know any peaches but pears I know !
Might be worth asking around.
I saw a RUclips video of someone growing peaches in Edmonton, if I remember correctly. He bends the branches to the ground and mulches over winter.
Nice video.. where'd ya get your grapes from? How'd the wine turn out for ya?
I made Jam with the grapes last year and it was GREAT! i got some vines from the greenhouse and others from my grandfathers.
Nice.. I'll be looking for some this weekend and ya jam sounds like a great use... if I don't get enough for wine lol
i have same ideas of what u want to grow, id like to do the same, can u point me in the direction u got your grapes. i live close to u in ab
wonderful. we live in zone 5B and we grow grapes in our backyard
you might want to try some honneyberrys i could send you some plants if you want to try
That would be very kind of you. I did pick some up but am a little confused as to of they will pollinate each other's. I got berry blue and Borealis. What varieties do you have ? I love trying new things.
yes they will berry blue is a good pollinator but there are better varieties then borealis ,like Indigo Gem
By chance do you that that type ?
I broke my own rule and did not research what I was getting.
hey ..most info might be dis info:}
'Ferment' wine not 'Brew'
