I am so glad to have found you!! Finally I have a place to go and see relevant advice for my Zone...(3?, Grande Prairie)... see I wasn't even sure what zone I was, so many maps and stuff! Yay I can learn! until now I have been stumbling in the gardens of Australia....southern California....you know the subtropics, because we all know that Canada is known for our subtropical climate! LOL but i do have to admit.....those wicking beds are a pretty neat idea!
The wicking beds are. Great idea but us northern Gardner's would have to empty them before freeze up every time :) I am really glad I could help my friend !
Learn To Grow cattle panel or nylon... if you use a cattle panel just screw it right into the top of the fence make eylets out of that concrete bailing wire or other... on an angle or use spacers (4x4) or other... nylon netting or galvanized pannel will last a long time...and be super easy to set up... In raised beds cattle panels are best... check out squarefootabundance.com/growing-watermelon-on-trellises/ Debras set up Is the best its the most simple and least work...Check it out... P.S. my trellis is lame this year.. dont bother with stakes and jute twine... I build things for a living and this makes the most sence... Galvinized steel takes a while to rust because it is a zinc coating ( zinc doesnt rust the same as other metals). Also they are very tall... I will install them like Deb next year... Most likely with 4x4 inch pressure treated wood posts and then use automatic watering for cucumbers and squash... From the bottom avoiding leaves and PM.
That is a great idea! We have a privacy fence at our other location where I am planning perennials. Grapes grow so well in that area and I have been wanting to plant some but did not know what to do about a trellis. This could be my solution.
Very good idea, Superman. Seriously, I have a vine up against my wood fence and it is not attaching itself so I need to construct something like you have illustrated. Thanks for the tip.
Very good build! I want to try grapes at some point, when it comes to the vines, do you prune them back all the way, or do you just prune all the side growth?
It depends in the spring you cut back to the main trunk and allow a few leaders to grow in the spring. When the plant has set fruit you can nip the growth tips to keep them in control on lateral and verticle growth :) I highly suggest grapes my friend lots of fun!
Gidday Stephen, this is really helpful for learning how to trellis grapes. This would work well for Passion fruit too I believe! Thanks mate Happy Gardening and God Bless Marty Ware
The grapes are doing fantastic. We have sun and heat which they enjoy ! I just chopped and dropped my green manure next to them in hopes they go a little more nuts ! They are about 1.4 m tall and 2m wide now :)
Thanks for letting me know! I'm putting together a trellis for a kiwi vine this weekend, and nothing looked sturdy enough for what I wanted to do until I came across your video! I'm so pleased that it's still going strong.
That leaves you only 16 inches from wire to fence. Don't think that's enough room for a mature grape vine. Am I wrong? I hear they get about 7 ft wide.
I have the two heirloom Concord grapes from my grandfathers. I also just put in a Frontiac and Frontiac Gris which are both good for wine and table eating :)
Thanks! Nice and clear - will try in my small garden.
I want to plant some grapes too one day...thanks for the ideas on the trellis.
Brandon grapes are so much fun to grow !! If you do grow them I can't wait to see how you do it !

Thank you Southpaw Davey y !! I can't wait !
What is the "tension wire" you refer to? Trying this out but I want to make sure I get the right wire to hold the weight of the grapes. Thanks!
Are you going to be making some small batch wine out of these grapes or are they table grapes?
They will be eaten for now unless I have sufficient volumes to make wine with :) I expect in a year or two to be making wine :)
awsome! sounds like a good project love to see how it turns out in a year or two.
Let's see - how old will I be when Stephen enjoys his first grape from his new trellis? Just kidding! Nice job! You'll be eating grapes in no time.
In theory I should get some from my older ones next year
upon further research Ill be 32-33 ;) I might even start an espallier pear project and that will be a lot longer ;)
What are the size of the bolts, and how long are the wood boards. I think that I'm going to try these.
The bolts are 1/2 inch thick and 12" long. The boards are 2x6x12'
It works great my friend !
