We've had a Concord grape vine in our backyard for at least 60 years, according to our oldest neighbors. My Mom has made grape jelly from it almost every year for the last 40+ years. A couple of springs ago, we had the wettest spring in memory and lost pretty much the entire harvest to black rot. Fortunately, it seems to have mostly fixed itself. Makes amazing jelly.
That sounds amazing, I've got a somewhat similar story. The house my father grew up in had small wild strawberries for the longest time, and we had a very dry and hot summer a few years ago, which unfortunately killed them off :( luckily the raspberries survived though. My grandmother has been trying to grow grapes and peaches for the longest time, but they keep getting infection and dying
Do you have any info on about: Brazilian Jaboticabas. They wont survive N.E.winter , for that i have it a big pot indoor, lot water and light..8 years no fruit yet... can you advise?
you should make a clone of it to have a healthy starter for just in case could even keep it in a pot then put one in the ground to insure you dont loose the original plant
same! i recently planted holy basil, and theyre starting to sprout in zone 7b. love gardening, and i hope to grow more and more. the best time to start is now! 💚
I’m growing grapes for a memorial for my pet bird who recently passed. I found a nice trellis with a bench that I have placed near her grave stone so that I can sit and watch her. Her favorite perch was always the one made of grape vine. Once the grapes grow long enough to prune, I’ll make some grape vine perches for the rest of my flock. And we can all enjoy eating the grapes together when it starts fruiting. Grapes are not toxic to parrots, they actually love grapes! 🍇
James, you are one of the most inspiring gardeners on RUclips. I spent one whole night starting with your first video. Your Food Forest is amazing, what you have learned is incredible and your passion to share what you know is beyond belief. I am very grateful for you, your time, your skills and your videos would not be the same without Tuck. Thank You for being you and I wish you all the best.
My vines finally produced grapes this year! They are four years old. This was the first year I pruned them. They really rewarded me! This was a great video. Thanks for delivering informative content! Go Tuck! ❤️
Videos but it just melts my heart watching how good you are with your dog and how do you know so much about both plants and animals. I wish more people were like that. Good job
I would really love if you made a general map of your backyard. There always seems to be more and more variety in what you grow and I really want to know how much room you have to fit it all in and your tips on where to place things.
I have a 4 year old concord grapevine I planted and just did a harvest and made grape jam for the very first time. It came out Awesome! I love my grapevines! Can't wait to make some juice.

This is awesome, James! If I can get my back yard into shape by spring, grapes are near the top of my list! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise! Love and peace from the other side of the Mighty Delaware!
I bought Valiant Grapes. It is good for zone 3. Last year we had -51 C and a lot of my plants died. I am trying again. Doing a lot of research so I prune correctly. They are in a hoop house and will be prepared properly for the coming winter. Thanks for all your advice!!!
Good to see another helpful video up. I have been following learning as much as I can from Paul and you. Back to Eden gardening is fun and I even have my own vermiculture going to build soil purely from worm castings.. it is so helpful for the ecosystem around me because I can put in worm eggs that get my populations roaring

Concord grapes make the best jam. They fill the air with a grape juice aroma when they get ripe. Such a wonderful fruit to have planted in a home garden.
I got sad when you said “that’s today’s video” I was like hey we just started hanging out! Where are you going? Lol.. I could watch an hour of you working the garden, I learn so much!
Not sure how I found your channel..but I love it! I am your neighbor in Delaware! Jersey is known for just having the BEST fruit and Vegetables! We purposely get produce anytime we are in NJ!. Glad I found this channel.
I love your energy Brother! Thank you for this video! I was looking at John 15 and wanted to understand what it meant to be a vinedresser. The pruning in the beginning stages of the growth in order to focus on roots couldn't have been more prophetic. Most people mistake that first pruning for failure when in actuality it is a necessary step in order to be able to handle harsh seasons and produce more fruit in good seasons. God Bless You ✌️💙⛰️
We’ve had a Concord grape vine for approximately 20 years if not more. I have a super easy recipe for grape juice, which I make every year…absolutely no comparison to buying grape juice at the store. The vine takes almost no care and produces reliably and abundantly. A Concord vine would be a great start for people newly getting into gardening. Thanks for sharing! And thanks for sharing that grapes are not good for dogs! People YES…Dogs NO! I love watching Tuck too!
@@ajc2265 put one and a third cups of Concord grapes in a hot quart jar, plus about 1/3 cup sugar and fill with hot water. Process in boiling water bath for 20 minutes. There are a few factors in table grape production. One plan I found which successfully combines these is the Grape grower folio (check it out on google) it's the most incredible blueprint i've heard of. Check out all the amazing info.
I just purchased a new grapevine this past week. Living in GA, I have trouble growing grapes (I've already killed several types, lol) other than muscadines - which I don't really like. The variety I purchased is called Razzmatazz and is hybrid of muscadine and a table grape (seedless and sweet with muscadine vigor). It's in a 2 gal pot and actually has clusters of grapes on it already, so I'm encouraged. This one requires full, Southern sun, so I'm prepping a spot for it to grow now and will be planting it soon. Maybe I'll get lucky with this one, lol. Looking forward to your pruning video...
@@frankdavidson9675 Pierce Disease kills many grapes in GA because we don't get enough cold to kill the virus. We can grow Muscadine and Scuppernog, but many other varieties don't survive unless they're Pierce resistant. The only table grape I've found that is resistant is Razzmataz. Giving it a shot...
@@frankdavidson9675 Frank, the point is that I don't LIKE muscadine or scuppernog grapes. I want table grapes. I've already been working with another grower in GA, Willis Orchards, and the only Pierce resistant varieties they carry are wine grapes. I've looked at the Ison website and they don't mention anything about disease resistance in any of the descriptions for their grapes, so I'm guessing they aren't Pierce resistant. James, Ha, ha, u found something Tuck can't eat. A couple of years ago I was working on a house I was getting ready to sell. I had taken my RV and little Yorkies over to that town, and there were some wonderful old seedless grapes which I had taken cuttings and transferred to the house I live in how. I had parked a little way away from the grapes, thinking I was OK with letting the dogs out a few times a day. The wind came up and blew dried grapes in the direction of the RV and one of my little guys, Andy, went crazy eating dried grapes. He was such a scavenger, he would go around the house eating dead flies, etc. Since I had rescued him from a shelter in LA I didn't know his history, but figured he had lived on the streets for awhile and had to fend for himself. Anyway, when I found out he had eaten dried grapes I rushed him to the emergency vet, of course this happened on Sunday evening, and they kept him overnight, pumped his stomach, and gave him IV fluids. $1800 later I picked him up the next day and he didn't even have any ill effect. When I see Tuck eating stuff in the garden, I am reminded of Andy, he was the cutest little dog I've ever had, with big wide eyes. Thought U might enjoy reading the book I just wrote U.
Oh I have a purple Concord vine about 18 years old. Made jelly. Juice and wine. If you leave the grapes on vine to freeze then juice your gonna make a Ice wine. Amazing stuff. Be careful this variety around your pup. They are poison to dogs. He's a joy to watch in your garden. My pup only wants to pee on everything vs eat. You trained the little guy well
I was searching for a container grown grapes, and I was led to this video. thank you very much, but I'm in the Philippines so grapes were different. Thank you for this.
Had to rewatch this video today.. I will get my 1st grape harvest this year. I think they will be ready in the next few weeks. Tasted 1 today. It had some sweetness but the skin was still a bit thick. Varieties are concord, hope, Niagara and reliance (all seedless) outer Chicago area
I started out small growing about 80 tomato plants and 20 zucchini from seed. I have gotten things like raspberry and a blueberry plant. I'm interested in growing grapes and it helped to know more about the different varieties from you.
Awesome and thank you! I learned so much, including not using the square fencing so it's easier to pick! :) I grew up in Western NY, working in the grape fields; pulling brush, picking, harvesting, etc. I am REALLY looking forward to smelling Concords again in the cool/crisp fall nights!!!
I have two grape vines - one grown from a cutting growing very well locally, with fruit galore. Every cutting I took struck, so I gave all but one away. The other is a plant I ordered from a nursery, and this one has not done nearly as well. It isnt a local.
I added grapes to my orchard last year. Built a two tier wire trellis. Planted Concord and Neptune. They took off this year. Looking forward to seeing some fruit next year or the year after. Looking forward to your pruning video.
My Dad just passed away, and he has a small vineyard. I am going to say probably 120 vines. He loved his garden very much, and I am the only one interested in making sure they do not die. He has had a few of them for about 45 years. My step mom is selling their place. My Dad has mostly Concord grapes. For some reason he had 2 big bags of sulfur. Ii read that a major use for sulfur is a supplement for grapes. Do you know anything about that?
''Lime sulfur is a common fungicide applied to grapevines during the growing season. Lime sulfur is approved for organic production systems and is generally believed that the different pathogens it is used against cannot become resistant. Because lime sulfur contains no pesticides, it is safe for use on grapes. ''
I just love grapes, love your video's,and food forest l have a garden of my own, enjoying soo much ,very relaxing,I plant almost my whole life, its the best thing I do.Thanx for sharing
50% of the worlds grapes you say? China grow over 10 million tons, next is India with less than 3 million tons, Third Turkey with 2,3 million tons, 4th European Union with 1,7 million tons. USA is on the 5th place with 1 million tons of grapes. Maybe you ment 50% of the North american grapes.
If you have some space left try growing 1 or 2 wild grape vines. They're very hardy and disease resistant, requiring minimal maintenance (not even pruning unless you want to limit their overall size). Vines are fast growing and very prolific, so they're often used for decorative purposes (on perimeter fences or shade canopies). Fruits are tiny compared to domestic varieties (about the size of a corn kernel) and kinda sour even when fully ripe, but have a very nice strong flavor and pack a lot more vitamins and antioxidants. Whole fruits can be added to salads or cocktails, but it's the juice that's the most enjoyable (squeezed, not blended, as seeds are very bitter if cracked open), you can add it into any kind of drink and preserve long term by freezing as ice cubes. From improving the taste and flavor of lower quality wine to spicing up tea or mixed fruit juices it's an ingredient well worth keeping at hand in the freezer.
I just got home from the nursery, I bought my 1st grape plant..its called Fredonia..its similar to concord which is my favorite. I am going to check into it...I had no clue what to buy when I was there so, that was my choice.I am going to get a few more varieties. Thanks James
evil birds got to my first grape harvest this year. I grew muscadine and tasted only a few from 1-2 bunches. I was robbed!! Peacocks ripped up my greens and cabbage. Squirrels, beavers, butterflies, caterpillars and deer on the attack.
I live in LA county. It took my Thompson seedless about 2 years to properly root. This year it blew up, grew all over. I’m hoping for my first harvest next year. Can’t wait
I’m eating grapes right now that’s why I’m watching this and you started talking about grapes having diseases and you’re making me want to put my grapes back
I think it’s great man it’s really nice to see somebody who likes dogs and nature! It’s the most natural way growing the graves in the woods without cutting the trees down!!!! So… cool, after watching your video I can see the collective consciousness is changing for the better!
Where I live in the US, most of those grapes wouldn't last well in the heat. It only frosts a handful of times here in the winter and it snows for an hour or two about every ten to fifteen years. The Muscadine grapes, though...they grow wild where I'm located. I ordered four muscadine grape vines last week, three big reds and one cowart. They'll be here in October. They'll be one of the starting plants in my garden. I'm excited.

This is the most excited man in the history of grapes. lol i love it.
750k subscribers! Imagine us all supporting our world with food forests all thanks to James!!!
Absolutely love you channel 😊 you're so inspiring and motivating...thank you for all your amazing videos!
Love your passion, your instructions are so easy to follow - I’ll be referring to this throughout the season as my vine is just 2 years old x
Kills fungus. It's great on humans dogs grapes squash lots of environments.
Balanced by magnesium sulfate. Epsoms o course
Sulphur also drops the ph of the soil. It takes a long time to do so but it works.

''Lime sulfur is a common fungicide applied to grapevines during the growing season. Lime sulfur is approved for organic production systems and is generally believed that the different pathogens it is used against cannot become resistant. Because lime sulfur contains no pesticides, it is safe for use on grapes.

Your grape vines with the grapes hanging down are amazing
Who else was a bit in "awe" when tuck was munching down some cucumbers?
I didn't know dogs could eat cucumbers.

Washington state produces like close to 50% of the world's grapes. It's a crazy amount from an unexpected place!
@@gustavusadolphus4103 I appreciate that reply thank you
Yea Alysia where did you get your facts & figures from?
Sorry it was US not world. WA is second next to California
Please do an updated grapes dedicated video this year! I'm planting 2 vines this week for my first go at them! MA zone 6 Concord and Niagara
From improving the taste and flavor of lower quality wine to spicing up tea or mixed fruit juices it's an ingredient well worth keeping at hand in the freezer.
where do you get them?
James, I so, so, so enjoy your videos. I take notes and hope to emulate how you do your gardening when I get the chance!
I thought you said cannabis grapes, that got my attention!🤣

Me too😂

I just got home from the nursery, I bought my 1st grape plant..its called Fredonia..its similar to concord which is my favorite. I am going to check into it...I had no clue what to buy when I was there so, that was my choice.I am going to get a few more varieties. Thanks James
evil birds got to my first grape harvest this year. I grew muscadine and tasted only a few from 1-2 bunches. I was robbed!! Peacocks ripped up my greens and cabbage. Squirrels, beavers, butterflies, caterpillars and deer on the attack.
That's frustrating! Try the insect net next year it worked wonders for me 😁
@@jamesprigioni Tried bird (not insect) netting and the birds were like 'yeah, right.'
My grapes spoil before become ripe
I live in LA county. It took my Thompson seedless about 2 years to properly root. This year it blew up, grew all over. I’m hoping for my first harvest next year. Can’t wait
How do you like them um... grapes?! :D
Dangerously good
James, you're doing exactly what you should be doing. Its cool seeing you get so into your passion, brother. Thanks for all the knowledge.
I love your grapes. They are why you are healthy and have all that energy. Grapes are the best food to detox. I'm planting more grapes .
We were blessed to have established grape vines when we moved to our property 6 yrs ago. We make jelly out of ours.
