Many thanks from Zimbabwe🇿🇼🙂👋🏾 I'm planting some lettuce later today so these tips have come right on time 😎😉👍🏾
James seems like he is a good soul. We need more people like this. Really enjoy his show and also seeing Tuck.
If he had the best soul he would feature foster dogs in his videos
Yes.. we need more people like this in Jersey!!!! He represents the good folks here well 😀
His lettuce looks really good
Does anyone know what that purple/black looking lettuce is in his garden? (Not the lunox one, the other one at the beginning of the video)
@@elizabeths5032 And THIS is why we are sick of foster dogs being pushed on us!! NAZI mentality.
Love the tips. I learn each time I watch.
I pull my lettuce head with root when ready to harvest whole head. This way I put it on the kitchen counter in a cereal bowl Of water. The lettuce keeps longer as I can’t eat the whole head at one meal. And it looks so fresh and pretty on the counter.
James continues to be my favorite garden person. Energetic, informative, goes to the point, and never, ever complains about his fan base! Thanks, James!
I had a Beautiful row of kale... this morning. The deer must’ve thought it was delicious.
Been there, it least someone enjoyed it ❤
not even kidding, I'm putting seeds in a germination trays right now and lettuce was my next seed package
Haha me and Tuck new it, we were just waiting for you to finish the last pack before the lettuce 😁
Your merch needs some TUCK on it! -Fellow NJ resident and yorkie owner
Yeah I have been told that by a few people lol! I had a Tuck shirt that I removed, so I might have to bring it back from retirement.
Oh man, FOOD FOREST of the GARDEN STATE! Keep it up great work heading to your shop now!
Thanks for lettucing us see how you grow lettuce. Grow ON!!
Haha clever pun!!
I love the openings this year....you're very energetic when you say "What's Goin ON Growers?!!!!!"😂😂😂 The force is stronger than ever!
Haha it was a long winter 🤣
You are an inspiration and God loves you. You where the first one to inspire me to make a food forest back when I was just wanting to live off the land. I lost all my friends my wife cheated on me And stole all my money and now I live alone in he Appalachia mountains in a small home with land nearby. I spent all I had on supplies for this food forest am foraging all my vgetabls and non bulk dehydrated foods until I can grow some. I currently live off the land and do all my cooking lighting and essentials with solar I depend on this land for survival this food forest and trashed land I just purchased that im cleaning up is my only hope and will be doing it this season with a potentialy broken wrist. I found an abundance of everything in nothing and am happier then I ever was when I had everything I thought I needed. God bless you James without this technique and your wisdom you shared I dont think I'd be ale to survive how I need to. God bless you James I hope you recieve everything you want in life one love to you :) if your ever in the Sussex County area let me know I have 3.7 acres in a state forest with a nice stream for tucky to cool of in
Zzzzzz
Your dog reminds me of my dog in the garden 😄 My Teddy is still just a 5 month old maltipoo but he follows me through every task and sometimes he will try to help me weed & he loves digging the holes for me to drop seeds in, we've been planting this week & every day he goes out with me and sniffs every single plant to make sure they are still okay, I guess 🤷♀️ plus he's even learning to keep the chickens out of the garden. Gardening is so much more fun with a little buddy to help out! You have great content, thanks for sharing!
Boy James, you throwing out some fantastic knowledge on the lettuce. I had no idea how delicate they were, I would prefer starting seeds in trays as well. I tell you, you have a lettuce for evey day, you will not get tired of eating the same over and over. Good thing you start seeds elsewhere, that little Tuck likes to get in on the action. Always a great video. Thank you James and Tuck.❤❤❤❤❤🐶🐶🐶❤❤❤❤❤
Tucker is the best garden helper! We all need an adorable Tucker in our lives! 😍🙌🏻🌿
Thanks for the kind words Jackie and your right! We all do need a helper like Tucker 😁🐕
You are the man! Tuck is the garden police! Thanks for all you do!
Hey James and Tuck. I have to say its very inspiring to see all of what you have accomplished with your garden. Its made me start my own garden in my back yard 3 years ago. And when im not successful in something you and Tuck inspire me to keep growing. I have planted more varieties and plants this year than i have ever done and really excited for this year. I really love these videos and i love seeing Tuck. Thanks for teaching me to be a better gardener.
I'm trying to grow enough lettuce to share with all of my neighbors🌱💕James thanks for being an inspiration and and bigger thanks for always sharing tuck with us💛
Lettttsssssss Gooooooo!!
I hope this video helps! You're welcome Jessica and thank you for always spreading kindness and encouragement in the comment section 😁🐕❤️
The majority of my veg/fruit, if I'm successful, is for the food pantry at my church.
I was really hoping you’d say “lettucccee gooooo” haha
@@bbsvchic that's kinda how I read the comment 😅
The response I got from a couple people I offered nice leaves to...was that it wasn't already washed. They prefer to buy from grocery .
The lettuce has done so great with this cool spring! I saw a cold out there in my food forest today! He popped up out of the leaf mulch!
Love starting transplants. Beats the pest cycle. Less losses
I pit the seeds on opposite corners and if both germinate I split the transplants
Me too. I got almost 100% germination of my tomato seeds, so I have transplanted lots of doubles to red solo cups. If they grow enough by June 6, I will have to give plants away. I have room for only 28. I have at least 6 varieties. Canning and freezing this year.
I'm growing that Forellenschluss lettuce, along with Merlot, Ruby Red, Lollo Rosso, and Tom Thumb.
Tuck is one hell of a gardener. He’s never afraid to dirty his nose.
James, your garden and presentations are great!👍 I am a fan.
I started lettuce seeds in 2 Greenstalks on my porch to avoid the majority of pests. It holds 30 lettuce heads each so we can pick leaves as needed for sandwiches or side salads.
How did lettuce do in the Greenstalk? What zone are you in?
Good thing you're talking about protecting the lettuces because we're going to see some insane heat ramping up this upcoming weekend.
I have a type of leaf lettuce that reseeds itself every year and is tender. So rainy on the West Coast this year so heaps of little seeds have started up. Love growing lettuce
Hey Lori...what lettuce seed? Another West Coast gardner.
@@ravenwildspirit just leaf lettuce: red & green varieties. I always let 1 or 2 go to seed every year and end up with 15-20 growing mid-May next year!
Tuck is a good boy, protecting the garden ♥
It's great to see people growing their own food, and much healthier for both the body and the mind.
Miners lettuce is also know as Winter Purslane, it generally grows in Spring not Winter, mine is growing now and I can make a salad with it, but it's also starting to flower. So it really is a misnoma to call it winter lettuce.
I direct sowed some lettuce seed in early December 2021, covered it when it started to grow and it sort of stayed dormant but it’s taken off and they’re huge! And yummy!
Hi James. I wanted to let you know that I built a hinged hoop house for a steel raised bed this fall. I planted in it a little late, by the time I had everything done, but my plants all survived the cold weather of last week. I live in SE PA, in Zone 6B, a half zone colder from you. I only put one layer of plastic on my bed, but then cover it with frost cloth (just right on top of the plastic, although it mostly just touches at the top). I let it drape to the ground where I weight it with bricks. When it got really cold, I put hoops inside the plastic hoop house I built, and put another layer of plastic inside. I uncovered today and almost all plants survived (all lettuces, kale, cabbage, cilantro, etc) other than those that were touched by the inner layer of plastic along the edges. (there was ice on top of that inner layer of plastic). I hope Tuck is well, and look forward to more of your videos.
Hey bro, your videos have helped me grow and thus grow as a Gardner. What I’ve looked for and haven’t seen is a video of must have tools to start an efficient garden. Also, where can I send you pictures of the garden you inspired me to design? Thanks brother!
I transplanted some of my lettuce starts this week. Fingers crossed they keep growing!
Pretty lettuce varieties!
Good stuff, I bet they will just try and give them a nice little home to live in 😁
@@jamesprigioni they're in a 30" Birdies raised bed so we don't have to share with the bunnies. A Lettuce high rise!
Just planted lettuce today. I did not thin while they were in the seed tray..😬. Maybe I’ll thin right now! Thank You for your show. Have been a subscriber for ~2 years now
Absolutely love growing lettuce! Been doing high intensity in 10 gallon pots but gonna build some raised beds soon. since we just bought our house, it's go time!!
Good stuff!! Congrats on the house, now you can transition from your temporary setup, love hear it ❤️
Also lookin for a house and cannot wait to have a yard to grow in

Hey James and Tuck. Love you guys! Thanks for all the info! I wanted to share an idea with you on your next March. My daughter and I would love it if you would create a tee shirt that shows you and Tuck together with your website on it. Also, it should say "Tuck approved". Thanks again! We love Tuck.🥰
I want a t shirt that says “tuck approved”
Great idea! I’d definitely buy a couple - one LS & one SS!
New fan, grower and subscriber. #crushing. I would def purchase 💯
You ignore camera person…
@@bdeneris do seed tapes work
Have you ever had trouble growing parsnips? I have never been able to grow them from the bought seed. Any chance of a video with how to grow parsnips successfully please.
Love seeing Tuck in position to watch out for those squirrels who like to dig up gardens.
Your passion toward and knowledge of plants makes this one of my favorite gardening channels on youtube. 👍
Tuck has a job to do and it looks like hes on it!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I really like the way you cull the seedlings; it’s genius! Most people just pull them from the soil, disturbing roots of the healthiest plant in the process. Cutting them at the base makes so much more sense, especially for very sensitive sprouts like lettuce and carrots.
The only thing I know that is even vaguely lettuce like that will grow in a central Texas summer is Malabar Spinach. Though i do have a shady spot and I'm gunna expirement with that Solar Flare just for fun.
Chard and leaf amaranth also work for me in summer. Green chard especially. Amaranth is lovely.
I’ve never cared much for dogs, but your Tuck is the cutest, sweetest little good-hearted companion.
You are blessed.
Also love the info on this channel.
I'm in New Zealand, I've been watching you for a while now, your garden is great. Its the beginning on winter here/late autumn and I put lettuce in about 6 weeks ago I will be able to harvest lettuce, daikon, spinach, pak choi, wong bok and a few other Chinese green leafy veges all winter. But they bolt so fast in spring and summer here.
Always very enjoyable to see you . Your energy is contagious thank you for all your videos.
You make the best videos. Thank you for being so thorough!
thanks for the tips James and Tuck
I can't help but smile every time I watch your videos- your energy is so infectious 🙂 And Tuck the darling mini-gardener❤
Another excellent video. I've had good results sprouting lettuce seeds in hydroponic pebbles in a net cup and water then transplanting.
Today! I'm only here for tucker. Of course... For James' energy.
Dude seriously…you are so good at giving GREAT information that I’m just not finding elsewhere…wonderful information 🙏💙💙. Thank you 😊 💙🙏
My kids love watching your channel and seeing Tuck!
Can you send Tuck down to GA? We have a LOT more things he can chase away from our garden than just squirrels!!! Thanks for the channel and all the videos. We did an experiment with the square foot gardening this year - and it worked well enough that we've gone down the rabbit hole to do even more next year - including two more beds (and one will be in the front yard for all our salad greens too!). Appreciate the fun and energy you put into the videos and also the way you demonstrate things as well! Your channel and videos are the main reason we are moving forward and going to try even more next year! :)
Just transplanted my lettuce seedlings two days ago and they have already doubled in size! I kept thinking they were tiny still for being 2 months old but I think they just wanted more space.
Thank you James. Appreciate all the information and the video. Your lettuce looks amazing as does the rest of your garden. Looking forward to your next video.
When I was younger I remember i had grown a little lettuce plant, tomato plant, and carrot plant. I was so proud of that salad
This is my first year gardening and I’m clueless. I just learned more in your 17 min. video than I have reading an entire gardening book and countless other podcasts and RUclips videos. Thank you!!
I love the permaculture idea and the videos that you make and share to the people. Thank you for doing it, and I can see that you enjoy it. You have a gift...or several 😂. I've never seen such beautiful veggies before! Anyway, I see you and I love what you are doing with the whole food forest thing. I sincerely hope all people gravitate towards that.
Excellent video James. I didn't know there were so many different types of lettuces.❤❤❤❤❤ for Tuck.
Thank you James, for telling us the varieties. I love your harvest videos, and always pay close attention when you mention varieties. 👍😃
Thank you so much for these tips! Last year my lettuce was bitter so I didn't grow any this spring. Probably too late now, living in TX, but will try in the fall.
You can probably grow some inside. I do that here in NJ for winter and late summer
I've always had a problem with lettuce seed germination and transplanting out ,it's very sensative.Good video James very well done as always.
Yeah those little buggers are finicky to get up if you bury them too deep
There's a company called Sow Easy that makes pelleted seeds of all the tiny seed varieties. They take the tiny seeds and make them about the size of a BB
@@skinnyWHITEgoyim Ive tried those before i got them from harris seed in New York they dont keep well planted a whole tray 48 cells not one came up seeds were only 3 years old.
@@roccoconte2960 every seed i have tried so far came up. I have only tried carrots and lettuce
Packed full of info! The best informative gardening channel!
Let’s Gooo!!! ❤️
Absolutely love this channel, Thanks to your video's I have started a garden!
Can you show what you do with the lettuce after you harvest? Do you eat it all right away or do you store it and if so, how?
I cannot believe the variety of lettuce you have! Envy 😂Excellent video for a first time gardeners as well 😊
Thanks for your input. Still haven't quite figured out growing in the desert (Tucson). I think I'm going to get a hydroponic tower garden forwater conservation.
James you are amazing! Thank you for this video. I live in S Florida (where it's mostly always hot) so it's hard to grow lettuce, even in the "winter months". I have learned so much from your videos in the past 2 years I've been gardening. Thank you for sharing Tuck with us and keep doing what you're doing. We need you! Let's Goooooooo!
Hydroponic setup indoors would help
@@Section_230Great suggestion but I prefer to keep my gardening outdoors. To each their own but hydroponics is of no interest to me.
@@CortneysLittleGarden I do both, but yeah, best of luck.
Hi I enjoy your video I don’t have any space to plant but I enjoy watching you plant and harvest enjoy your fruits and vegetables bye.
thank you for your knowledge brother! take care and happy growing everyone! Tuck is the best guard dog ever!
Always healthy looking plants and fruits/ vegetables. Love the energy and the knowledge based from your experience
Love the spacing tip depending whether it’s spring or fall
This year I planted Merlot lettuce and so far in high 80s low 90s Mississippi heat it's growing beautifully
Yeah merlot is a great heat tolerant one as well
You are my absolute favorite!
Could you make a video on your favorite varieties of blueberries, raspberries, asparagus, tomatoes, etc? I would love to see all the different varieties you grow!
What a stunning array of lettuces! Just beautiful ❤️
This dude’s energy goes like he’s gonna flip all the tables he sees… in a good way 😅
On May 10th I didn't know what I was going to plant in my front porch planters, but figured I'd scatter some seeds and might actually get plants started by the time I get around to filling the planters. Well today on June 9th, I harvested some lettuce from those scattered seeds since I still haven't planted them up 😆🥬 There are also some basil seeds germinating in the back of the planters. They're so quick! I also started some from seed and I believe some germinated in only 1 or 2 days! It was incredible!
Your Lettuce samples are so beautifully stunning ⚛️🥬⚛️
Thank you James. Perfect timing for lettuce. Wow. So much in square foot. We'll be starting some inside thanks to you.
The varieties sure will make salads more inviting.
We had a great harvest with all your pruning tips for Cucumbers.
Really grateful and so satisfying to be successful.
This was so helpful! I had no idea how "lightly " to plant lettuce seeds. Package & others say 1/4in... tried & didn't work. I did get a few sprouts(very few) but didn't last long, maybe to much water as you mentioned! Going to try again! :) TY
You have so many lettuce varieties! Very impressive 😁
Thanks! Yeah it’s fun growing all different kinds 😁
Wow! You got me all into ALL these different lettuces! Thank you for the inspiration! 👍😊
Thanks for the tips on growing lettuce James!! Now I know what happened to mine last year. I had it in full sun and only got a minute amount before they went to seed!! After watching this, I should have better luck this year. Thanks again!!!
I came here from a really chill video that was playing in the background. Th "WHATS UP....." Literally made me jump in my desk chair
Another fine video James, I decided to plant some red raspberries this year and I came upon an early video of you on raspberries, boy have you blossomed, lol you were so reserved and quiet. Keep up the great work.
I love that you explain everything so well. You give me inspiration. Thank you
!
James GREAT hint of the 40% shade cloth! It gets pretty hot here in Northern California, so far another early week of 90s°
Tuck is on guard keep it safe tuck little buddy Hi to you too james Tuck comes first tho 😅✌🏻
So glad to see you!!! And a very timely video. I have several starts to put out and I'm deciding on what others to start now- once again I was kind of extravagant when ordering seeds this year. Love seeing Tuck- he's still looking good! I need a Tuck to chase off the squirrels and chipmunks!😃 Take care, be well 👍✌️
I have learned a few things about lettuce that I didn't know before, ty ! ♡♡
Hi James, great video as always. Your lettuce looks so amazing. What do you use to reseal the seed package with-was that painters tape?
I'm learning how to grow lettuces. This is my second year. I've actually gotten the items I need to turn my garden into a hoop house so I can grow in the winter too....or at least I hope to lol. Thank you for all you do ❤️
To reduce transplant stress, I'll mix the starting soil with the native should on the edges of the hole it's planted in to create a transition zone.
Do you have some recommendations for summer lettuce? It’s hot in California and they tend to bolt very quickly.
Mostly just heat tolerant ones like the solar flare, the lunix, the slobolt. Those are some ones that have done well in the summer heat for me, not sure if that is completely comparable to your summer heat though lol. Good variety selection, choosing a microclimate, mulching, and a 40% shade cloth should help things along I think
Keith, avoid lettuce with dark leaves, like reds and browns. They absorb heat and wilt badly. Stick to hardy green ones like Cos. That's been my experience
@@trkstatrksta8410 thanks!
Thanks for the tips here in Australia 🇦🇺 we are late autumn (fall) and I’m growing more lettuce varieties but I’m temperate climate so a heat tolerant lettuce is great , thanks for the tip
I use Sluggo Plus. Maybe I should do the Sluggo and the BT. I have some BT. Thanks James! You really have an awesome variety of lettuces! Beautiful plants! The speckled ones seem so exotic; I've never had them before. Really enjoyed seeing them! See you next time!
Yes! I’ve been hoping for a video on lettuce. Greens are what I MOST want to master. More lettuce videos! Maybe one on spinach too? Can that grow in the mid Atlantic? Love the videos. Thank you for sharing!
Spinach bolts like crazy on me. I like staggering lettuces and also beets and chard for reliable leaves in summer. I also grow leaf amaranth, which is amazing in summer. Meanwhile, I will keep starting lettuce, since the heat gap is really only a couple months for me. If pest pressures get too much, use tulle to float over. However, I noticed as long as I keep a few brassicas and radishes about, the pests go for those first. Then the lettuce might be affected, then the chards, etc. Usually my lettuces, chards, amaranth, malabar spinach stay mostly pest free.
Hi James, another great episode!! Keep up the good work! Do you and Tuck have an episode on how you built the cove for your raised beds?
Hey Team Tuck! I like eating my own lettuce over anything in the Supermarket. When I was growing up, my father said that Lettuce was an antidepressant and all I know is that I feel healthy and satisfied eating lettuce every which way! I use it as wraps for Asian dishes, on sandwiches, and even grilled on the BBQ. The colors, shapes, flavors and manner of harvesting has enough variety to add even more interest. Thanks for taking the time to take us on your journey! Cheers!
Just started growing lettuce from seed...this video is SO informative! Thx for sharing!
I throw the seeds in the ground. Survival of the fittest. I live in zone 9, and from November to the end of March, my lettuces boom.
