An added tip is let a plant of your favourite lettuce go to seed and collect your own seeds for future planting. You’ll get many seeds and they cost you nothing.
Absolutely! I bought romaine lettuce seeds, planted them and had one of the heads bolt. It’s starting to flower and I will grab those seeds and use them next year. Seeds are getting expensive!
I usually forget to grab the seeds but usually get 50-100 volunteers each year and I just separate, space and replant. Going on five years with great success
I have been growing lettuce indoors under growlights as well as in the greenhouse to prevent pests from eating my lettuce. This year I will be growing buttercrunch in a raised bed so your tips are helpful, thank you!
My leaf lettuce isn’t bitter, but it is soft. Guess who is fertilizing tomorrow? Thank you so much, Ive always wondered why my lettuce wasn’t crunchy enough.
I love Romaine lettuce. My favorites: Green Forest, Dragoon, Monte Carlo, and Coastal Star. These are offered in pelleted seed form for the convenience of eliminating the need for thinning (at Johnny's Seeds). I live in Northern New England (zone 5b) and I plant cold tolerant varieties twice in April (two weeks apart), for harvest May-June/July. I plant summer/heat tolerant varieties just after Memorial Day, and then cold tolerant varieties again, beginning in August, for harvest September-November. Green Leaf Lettuce, I grow: Green Star and Bergam's Green. Cold tolerant varieties: Winter Marvel, Marvel of four Seasons, Green Forest, and Winter Wonderland. Most of those I have not found in pelleted form.
Here in Illinois 5b where the weather is erratic, i had so much success growing the magenta variety. It's got a great heat tolerance when the weather in late spring is jumping from 50s to upper 80s which normally make lettuces bolt. Magenta variety stays sweet and crunchy even til early to mid summer.
This is my first year to start lettuce indoors under grow lights. I am soooo enjoying seeing them grow. Some are almost ready to be uppott3d into a container! I'm going to now put garlic n chives next to them thanks for that tip!
Greens, my favorite!! I’ve never tried head lettuce. My favorite is the romaine varieties but I also like leaf. I let the plants that bolt, go to seed. The flowers attract bees and also I can save the seeds for next year. Last summer, I had quite a harvest of volunteer lettuces amongst my garlic. I haven’t tried the sand with seeds but will do that this year. Love your show, thank you.
My favorite lettuce is Marvel of Four Seasons. I had not heard before that regular fertilizing will produce crisper lettuce. I will definitely be doing that this year! Very excited to finally be starting seeds in a few weeks. I'm also looking forward to more videos from this channel. We're having a rainy day here in NC so I'll be canning the tomatoes I froze last summer to make space for the new season.
I’ve never done lettuce before, but this is timely considering lots of the lettuce fields got flooded in here in ca, so not sure if it will cause a grocery issue at some point. I normally like a romaine, spring type leaf mix, and butter type lettuce depending on use. I’ve always worried slugs or some such would bother it, so never tried, but will give it a shot!
Just started 3 types of lettuce, arugula, celery, alliums, and a micro greens mix with mustards and cabbages. Starting brassicas next. I’m in 6b with 3 months of winter left. I’m planning on experimenting with different covers like milk jugs and clear plastic tubs, just to see what survives to what temperatures. And if anything makes it great, if it doesn’t I’ll eat it.
I plant in Mels Mix. I planted head lettuce awhile ago and its huge now and keeps growing. I have them under a row cover in my raised bed. No bugs for the 1st time.
I have always had difficulty transplanting lettuce outside. I think I'll just wait until the soil temp is 50 degrees and direct sow this year. I always look forward to your videos. Thanks
I have gotten great yield over a long season with Burpee’s 4 season, Muir, magenta, and Nevada lettuce varieties. They are not killed by the light frosts I get. During the summer, I grow them next to the north and east sides of my house, and under larger plants such as peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes.
I love lettuce, favorite is Grand Rapids variety, have grown Tom Thumb, crimson mix, Paris Island, butter crunch, red leaf lettuce. I direct sow lettuce as I live in So Cal & they grow very well. I have arugula, kale, Mizuna & mustard greens too. Thanks. Always learn a lot from your videos.
Lettuce I grow every year in Northern Ireland are Lollo Rossa, Lollo Bionda, as main lettuce. Plus Tom Thumb, Little Gem, Brighton Butterhead, and an ice berg
On the Coast of North Carolina We grow Parris Island Cos, and Giant Caesar Romaine Lettuce because of their heat tolerants!! We keep a shade cover when the temps reach over 80 degrees. Plant Early spring and late summer to fall!!
Some ppl here in my country grow lettuces to its full length by taking out only old leaves occasionally but staying the stem of lettuce not harmed. That's because they believe the stem of lettuce is a medicine for insomnia. When it is let to be fully grown up, its height reaches more than 1meter and it develops its stem to be thicker, stronger. Then they harvest the stem, let it dry and put it into a boiling water to drink it as a medicine. Of course if we try to develop more feasible medicines from nature, the stem might not be the best answer, but anyway ppl are growing lettuces both for taking seeds for next season and for medicine as well.
Yay! Thanks for this video, I've just started some lettuce that I hope will feel good being transplanted in the greenhouse in late February/early March. If we don't get too hard freezes, it should be fine.
During our winter here in Tehachapi, 8b, have been Romain growing lettuce in an aerogarden. There is snow outside and lettuce growing inside! Have had great luck with cherry tomatoes in the aerogarden. Had 2 plants going non stop for almost 2 years with pruning. My youngest grand daughter eats them off the vine.
I use a shaker bottle for any little seeds, or for anything I want to have a light disbursal of over a somewhat controlled area, like my pollinator blends.
We just harvested our first ever crop of lettuce. It was floppy and bitter. I think we have enough time for another crop. Thank you for the fertilizing tip. Will be trying itnout.
Red Grenoble (Rouge Grenobleoise) is my favourite lettuce and I pick the outside lower leaves as it grows. Try growing leaves in trays lined with plastic or card too for cut and come again, you can move those trays to the best position the waether has to offer...Steve...🙂
This is perfect I was going to start my very first lettuce bed. Thanks so much Brian I appreciate all of your videos! I don't have a favorite lettuce yet but I am open for beginner suggestions.
Thank you so much for this video. I had practically given up on trying to grow lettuce. The aphids were eating more lettuce than I could harvest. And I have a raised bed😣😣😪😪😫😫 I will take this info and give it a try again. Wish me luck! Peace and Blessings.
I will need to get my leaf lettuce out ASAP. Been very busy starting tomatoes, potatoes, peas inside. Will get deer fence up in 2 weeks and get the lettuce in then!!! I love leaf lettuce, both green and red. Yup, just easy to snip outer leaves and start a salad. Yum
I did learn something! I didn't know about the sand trick. Love that one! The sponsor of this video is a great choice as well. Thanks for letting us know about them!
Thanks for the liquid fertilizing tip. I like to use vegan fertilizers so I use liquid kelp, as well as some azomite added to the water. Also, the companion planting tips to reduce pests are very helpful.
My favorites include any red leaf. I like red sail but there are so many with red edges or red speckles. Also oak leaf. I often plant mesclun mix. Love the variety of shape and color. If it comes up in a clump I have success scooping up a small number, separate them and replant separated. Do on a cloud covered or light rain day. I then cover them for a day or so with a pot to avoid shock.
I'm in zone 8a and I have Parris Island Romaine growing outside now. I have had success growing Tom Thumb bib lettuce and regular loose-leaf as well all year 'round.
QUESTION: I have a question about growing winter squash vertical. I have scoured RUclips and find lots on vertical growing zucchini, which I have success, but not much, if any, on winter squash. Specifically, when I grow winter squash the main stem branches off with multiple branches. I’ve tried growing on a fence and get some of the branches going up but I still have branches wandering. I’m wondering if I should be pruning off branches like I do the indeterminate tomatoes and concentrate on just one or two branches. Thank you.
I worked so hard at it my lettuce species, i had five this year and even used the marine food grade diatomaceous earth because I didn't interplant garlic. The sun turned it to stone like dried up nothingness:( The pics I took showed so much hope but after watching your video, i realized that I planted in April and rhat wqs too late for the super hot and humid summer we all had in Ct.
Good to know about the companion planting element, as I've more than a few patches of garlic & onions now out in my yard, so I can just put in some lettuce seeds all around them, for the aphids I've gotten destroying things in the past.
Last year I planted "crisp head" lettuce and boy, was it! Crisp, and a delicious mild, never bitter lettuce. And I'm not usually one to get excited about lettuce, but this is what I'll be growing from now on. And "muncher" cucumbers. I get the seeds at dollar tree, 4packs for 1.25
@@lovinlifeinNC Hi, Monica! I live in Portland Oregon, we're zone 8b. I started seeds indoors and planted them out 26th of march, along with peas, potatoes, onions, beets & carrots. Getting ready to build a 8 x12 greenhouse. With recycled windows double pane. And a refurbished exhaust fan. I don't know the CFM of the fan. 1500 rpm. How much air that puts out. Does anyone have a reget on building a green house that maybe you could share with me? Before I make the final plans in stone?
I'm growing salad bowl lettuce, butter butter crunch, mixed lettuce and romaine this year. Ill also plant some dill in there as well. Thanks for the video. What else can I plant to help deter pests in the area of the lettuce that may also help deter pests in nearby beds with collards in it?
Sooooo new at the garden thing. Can I grow veges other than tomatoes in tomato potting mix in a container. What conditions, potting mix and weather wise do I need to grow salanova lettuce, do they need direct sunlight.

Have not grown lettuce yet but I’m going to try this year. It was a little weird with the commercial in the middle of the video. I thought someone hacked the video at first. Lol. What about growing kale? Hope this season is a good one. ❤️🌺
Depending on your zone, you may have better luck growing kale over winter. I'm in zone 7 ( central NC) and I plant it in Aug. and it grows until spring. It goes to seed when it gets hot but boy do we pick a lot until then.
I grow several varieties of lettuce. In my garden, the leaf lettuces appear to have no pests. But the Boston head lettuces get infested by slugs. I gave up on Romaine lettuce a few years ago. Do you know if there are any companion plants that deter slugs? I have tried the beer traps before and found plenty of drowned slugs. hi brian 🤗 another great video. i started lettuce in my raised beds about 3 weeks ago - right before all the rain came (socal, zone 10). i hope the roots aren't water-logged. tfs
Damn....i put mad seeds of lettuce in one little container. And i planted them a month ago and they now they are starting to stand up but they dont look like the one in the video. Gonna have to start over? Im in florida
How often should you water lettuce? I used to water them everyday and soak them and it seemed like it would kill the outter part of the lettuce and turned brown there was no signs of bugs or worms idk if its because Im over watering them.
Strange offshoot question... there is a store here called Aldi, that has a very large growbag type tote bag. I saw somewhere that those bags can be used officially as grobag as long as you cut vent holes in them. Do you concur with that ideology? Because I have a ton of those bags here at my house and would love to do container gardening in an inexpensive way. Starting with a lettuce bed
