GREAT VIDEO AND INFO. THANKS
An added tip is let a plant of your favourite lettuce go to seed and collect your own seeds for future planting. You’ll get many seeds and they cost you nothing.
Smart! Thanks for sharing.😊
Absolutely! I bought romaine lettuce seeds, planted them and had one of the heads bolt. It’s starting to flower and I will grab those seeds and use them next year. Seeds are getting expensive!
I usually forget to grab the seeds but usually get 50-100 volunteers each year and I just separate, space and replant. Going on five years with great success
It's great to see people growing their own food, and much healthier for both the body and the mind.
I have been growing lettuce indoors under growlights as well as in the greenhouse to prevent pests from eating my lettuce. This year I will be growing buttercrunch in a raised bed so your tips are helpful, thank you!
You're welcome
I love Romaine lettuce. My favorites: Green Forest, Dragoon, Monte Carlo, and Coastal Star. These are offered in pelleted seed form for the convenience of eliminating the need for thinning (at Johnny's Seeds). I live in Northern New England (zone 5b) and I plant cold tolerant varieties twice in April (two weeks apart), for harvest May-June/July. I plant summer/heat tolerant varieties just after Memorial Day, and then cold tolerant varieties again, beginning in August, for harvest September-November. Green Leaf Lettuce, I grow: Green Star and Bergam's Green. Cold tolerant varieties: Winter Marvel, Marvel of four Seasons, Green Forest, and Winter Wonderland. Most of those I have not found in pelleted form.
I’ve never done lettuce before, but this is timely considering lots of the lettuce fields got flooded in here in ca, so not sure if it will cause a grocery issue at some point. I normally like a romaine, spring type leaf mix, and butter type lettuce depending on use. I’ve always worried slugs or some such would bother it, so never tried, but will give it a shot!
Best option for seeding lettuce is NOT TO SEED lettuce ! Wasting seed, then thinning the lettuce crop is a waste of effort and time. 90% preparation with 10% on the back end - vs - doing 10% front end and having to do 90% effort on the back end.
Get painters 1 inch wide tan or blue tape. Pull out a length, put weights on each end.
DO NOT pour seeds onto the tape. Get the tweezers and put the appropriate number of seeds onto the tape at the appropriate distance. If you need to make distance marks - then Magic Marker a dot on the side of the tape with the proper distance. Make "2" rows onto the tape at the 1/4 inch inside area of the tape's edge. When done sticking all the seeds along 2 rows at the appropriate distance, razor cut the tape in 1/2 inch widths. Get large toothpicks or wood slivers (construction waste). Attach the toothpick/slivers as posts (with the tape being in the "flag position" on the skewer). You just made 2 rows of lettuce - and saved gobs of seeds for succession planting later.
Take the tapes to the garden bed. Furrow out "a slot" ("I" width and depth - no "V" design) to the proper depth of the bed surface with a 16 penny nail in making the slot. VERTICALLY place and STAKE the toothpick/slivers into the slot firmly holding the tape into the slot and tamp both sides of the slot together, holding the tape in place. The reason is to have the seed attached to the side of the tape (DO NOT FOLD THE TAPE AROUND THE SEED), allowing the proper seed depth - but the open side of the tape holds the seed, while allowing proper root growth downward and upward foliage upwards. Do this, and water the slot. The seeds will grow the proper distance apart (no thinning, until you remove out the adolescent lettuce heads, allowing the bigger distanced lettuce to grow into mature heads.
In coming times, when seed prices hyperinflate - using the proper seeding techniques - will save you tons of time, effort, and money - and no waste of garden seeds. The same can be done with onion, celery, parsley, chervil, cilanto, herbs, chives, beet, carrot, salsify, turnip, rutabaga, tomato, chili, pepper, swiss chard, spinach, mustard, nasturtium, etc etc etc seeds so that you have properly distanced seeding. Square foot gardening, and square inch (the John way) gardening.
I like it 👌
Wow, you must be an engineer! I like your idea and agree about the waste. I am a stingy seeder and hate the concept of thinning too. Mel Bartholomew would be proud. I'm going to find a video on this and try it.
Always a good gardening activity!!! 😊❤️🎶🇨🇦 Arugula. Spinach. Spring Mix. Romaine. 😊❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦
Here in Illinois 5b where the weather is erratic, i had so much success growing the magenta variety. It's got a great heat tolerance when the weather in late spring is jumping from 50s to upper 80s which normally make lettuces bolt. Magenta variety stays sweet and crunchy even til early to mid summer.
Some ppl here in my country grow lettuces to its full length by taking out only old leaves occasionally but staying the stem of lettuce not harmed. That's because they believe the stem of lettuce is a medicine for insomnia. When it is let to be fully grown up, its height reaches more than 1meter and it develops its stem to be thicker, stronger. Then they harvest the stem, let it dry and put it into a boiling water to drink it as a medicine. Of course if we try to develop more feasible medicines from nature, the stem might not be the best answer, but anyway ppl are growing lettuces both for taking seeds for next season and for medicine as well.
Love your trick about using a spice bottle with seed and sand to help space out the seeds
It's really helpful
I have a better method and you would have almost infinite lettuce
Just started 3 types of lettuce, arugula, celery, alliums, and a micro greens mix with mustards and cabbages. Starting brassicas next. I’m in 6b with 3 months of winter left. I’m planning on experimenting with different covers like milk jugs and clear plastic tubs, just to see what survives to what temperatures. And if anything makes it great, if it doesn’t I’ll eat it.
Microgreen bak choy is also great
On the Coast of North Carolina We grow Parris Island Cos, and Giant Caesar Romaine Lettuce because of their heat tolerants!! We keep a shade cover when the temps reach over 80 degrees. Plant Early spring and late summer to fall!!
That's a good one
My favorite lettuce is Marvel of Four Seasons. I had not heard before that regular fertilizing will produce crisper lettuce. I will definitely be doing that this year! Very excited to finally be starting seeds in a few weeks. I'm also looking forward to more videos from this channel. We're having a rainy day here in NC so I'll be canning the tomatoes I froze last summer to make space for the new season.
A few people have mentioned that. I'll have to look for it
Greens, my favorite!! I’ve never tried head lettuce. My favorite is the romaine varieties but I also like leaf. I let the plants that bolt, go to seed. The flowers attract bees and also I can save the seeds for next year. Last summer, I had quite a harvest of volunteer lettuces amongst my garlic. I haven’t tried the sand with seeds but will do that this year. Love your show, thank you.
Thank you for all those tips on how to keep the insects off your plants with companion planting. The garden insects were relenting last summer here in NC. I did find that Marigolds helped the tomatoes. TY!
Red Grenoble (Rouge Grenobleoise) is my favourite lettuce and I pick the outside lower leaves as it grows. Try growing leaves in trays lined with plastic or card too for cut and come again, you can move those trays to the best position the waether has to offer...Steve...🙂
Great tip!
Getting ready to build a 8 x12 greenhouse. With recycled windows double pane. And a refurbished exhaust fan. I don't know the CFM of the fan. 1500 rpm. How much air that puts out. Does anyone have a reget on building a green house that maybe you could share with me? Before I make the final plans in stone?
thank you for the tip about cutting off the thinnings instead of yanking them out---I'll use your method this spring.
Glad it was helpful!
I use chili powder around all my plants it keeps the animals away. All except my chickens who dont care about capsaicin lol
I did this too, to keep groundhogs away. Except I boiled dried hot chili peppers, made the whole house cough and tear up, and sprayed the spicy water with a spray bottle onto the plants.
I have a cat that likes to roam the garden so I was afraid of using powder in case she got it on her paws and into her eyes.
Growing Bak Choy atm. Really quick to grow. Great for microgreens and baby bak choy
Yay! Thanks for this video, I've just started some lettuce that I hope will feel good being transplanted in the greenhouse in late February/early March. If we don't get too hard freezes, it should be fine.
This is my first year to start lettuce indoors under grow lights. I am soooo enjoying seeing them grow. Some are almost ready to be uppott3d into a container! I'm going to now put garlic n chives next to them thanks for that tip!
Good luck!
Red leaf lettuce is my favorite... I live in California.
Rouxai variety?
I love lettuce, favorite is Grand Rapids variety, have grown Tom Thumb, crimson mix, Paris Island, butter crunch, red leaf lettuce. I direct sow lettuce as I live in So Cal & they grow very well. I have arugula, kale, Mizuna & mustard greens too. Thanks. Always learn a lot from your videos.
QUESTION: I have a question about growing winter squash vertical. I have scoured RUclips and find lots on vertical growing zucchini, which I have success, but not much, if any, on winter squash. Specifically, when I grow winter squash the main stem branches off with multiple branches. I’ve tried growing on a fence and get some of the branches going up but I still have branches wandering. I’m wondering if I should be pruning off branches like I do the indeterminate tomatoes and concentrate on just one or two branches. Thank you.
Black seeded Simpson
I have always had difficulty transplanting lettuce outside. I think I'll just wait until the soil temp is 50 degrees and direct sow this year. I always look forward to your videos. Thanks
Thank you
This is perfect I was going to start my very first lettuce bed. Thanks so much Brian I appreciate all of your videos! I don't have a favorite lettuce yet but I am open for beginner suggestions.
I appreciate you!
Winter Density has good flavor and is slow to bolt. Leaf lettuce.
So, I’m sitting here thinking I have never seen Old Spice in a shaker bottle. Oh, right, old “spice” bottle. 🙄 😂
@@margaretderen2082 🤣🤣
My favorite is definitely Marvel of 4 Seasons. I can grow that anytime in my 10a garden except summer; I'm too stingy with my watering to do well then.
I am starting the planning process now but just this morning more snow 🌨 ❄️ ☃️ 😱
Planning is the fun part!
@@NextLevelGardening can't wait for spring but have no choice but to wait 😂
I know how you feel, we had freezing rain.
I tend to grow head lettuce like cos and romaine but I might try the leaf lettuce this year. Thanks for all the advice
I plant in Mels Mix. I planted head lettuce awhile ago and its huge now and keeps growing. I have them under a row cover in my raised bed. No bugs for the 1st time.
I use a shaker bottle for any little seeds, or for anything I want to have a light disbursal of over a somewhat controlled area, like my pollinator blends.
Mine & my husband’s absolute favorite lettuce to grow hands down is Lolla Rosa. Crisp, delicious and no bitterness at all 😋
I grow mine rite out of bag. Get 2 cu soil bags cut top off spread seeds and like magic lettuce
Yes!
mix seeds with sand i a shaker to thin distribution - BRILLIANT!
😁
Love red leaf butter lettuce... Trying to grow it to save money... I eat lettuce every day.
My leaf lettuce isn’t bitter, but it is soft. Guess who is fertilizing tomorrow? Thank you so much, Ive always wondered why my lettuce wasn’t crunchy enough.
That's a really great tip on using a spice jar and sand. Thanks!
A very informative video thank you tremendously
Have not grown lettuce yet but I’m going to try this year. It was a little weird with the commercial in the middle of the video. I thought someone hacked the video at first. Lol. What about growing kale? Hope this season is a good one. ❤️🌺
Depending on your zone, you may have better luck growing kale over winter. I'm in zone 7 ( central NC) and I plant it in Aug. and it grows until spring. It goes to seed when it gets hot but boy do we pick a lot until then.
Thank you!
Thanks Brian! Now that the rain has stopped I've got to get out there and plunk those seeds into the soil! :)
You bet!
Thank you so much for this video. I had practically given up on trying to grow lettuce. The aphids were eating more lettuce than I could harvest. And I have a raised bed😣😣😪😪😫😫 I will take this info and give it a try again. Wish me luck! Peace and Blessings.
Little gem is my favorite because I have only a small space. Last year I got more than we could eat. Lettuce is so easy to grow.
Good one!
I am a beginner gardener and this video was extremely helpful to me! Thank you so much.❤
I like to do high intensity planting method. I never thin and just cut and come again.😊
sounds awesome I well definitely be growing lettuce In my garden this spring
Once again I’ve learned some fun facts about companion planting. Thanks!🎉
Awesome!
I have gotten great yield over a long season with Burpee’s 4 season, Muir, magenta, and Nevada lettuce varieties. They are not killed by the light frosts I get. During the summer, I grow them next to the north and east sides of my house, and under larger plants such as peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes.
I didn't realize slow growing lettuce is soft and bitter. Shaker idea is genius. Thanks for the tips.
We just harvested our first ever crop of lettuce. It was floppy and bitter. I think we have enough time for another crop. Thank you for the fertilizing tip. Will be trying itnout.
Awesome video. I like Romaine, Iceberg and buttercrunch lettuce.
Thank you. Especially appreciate the tips about companion planting.
During our winter here in Tehachapi, 8b, have been Romain growing lettuce in an aerogarden. There is snow outside and lettuce growing inside! Have had great luck with cherry tomatoes in the aerogarden. Had 2 plants going non stop for almost 2 years with pruning. My youngest grand daughter eats them off the vine.
I would buy the vitamins...IF...they weren't NON-GMO. We could feed all the starving people of the world if we could embrace GMOs. Why condemn something that could save the world?
Found your channel while looking for solutions for gophers. Now am binge watching your videos am in SoCal zone 10b.
Welcome aboard!
Romaine is my favorite
Thanks for the liquid fertilizing tip. I like to use vegan fertilizers so I use liquid kelp, as well as some azomite added to the water. Also, the companion planting tips to reduce pests are very helpful.
My favorites include any red leaf. I like red sail but there are so many with red edges or red speckles. Also oak leaf. I often plant mesclun mix. Love the variety of shape and color. If it comes up in a clump I have success scooping up a small number, separate them and replant separated. Do on a cloud covered or light rain day. I then cover them for a day or so with a pot to avoid shock.
Great way to do it!
Can you please do an “everything you need to know” on eggplant?? I would really love to grow them.
I do good with Sparx romaine but trying Sunland this year. Then Adriana and Salanova blend for head lettuce
Great video, thank you Brian!🤗💞🤗
I'm growing salad bowl lettuce, butter butter crunch, mixed lettuce and romaine this year. Ill also plant some dill in there as well. Thanks for the video. What else can I plant to help deter pests in the area of the lettuce that may also help deter pests in nearby beds with collards in it?
He also said onions, garlic and Alyssum
@@lovinlifeinNC yea I have onions growing now too but no garlic.
I love Romaine lettuce because it stays crunchy.
If I mix different lettuce seeds in my shaker is that all right or do you suggest one type of seed per row?
My seedlings grow great but them wilt when I repot them.. do you have any advice? Thank you for your channel!! It’s awesome.
All that work, watering? I go to Costco, and for $5.00, I get 6 romaine hearts. When I had a small garden, my water bill was $780 for 3 months.
Wait a head lettuce and leaf lettuce? Doesn't a head of lettuce have leaves? Can you talk for us beginners? Also I have a balcony. Do I have to put holes on the bottom? Neighbors below will be really upset.
hi brian 🤗
another great video.
i started lettuce in my raised beds about 3 weeks ago - right before all the rain came (socal, zone 10). i hope the roots aren't water-logged. tfs
Thanks. They should be good!
Lettuce question: My lettuce sprouts super leggy. I’ve tried to grow romaine but it ends up looking like a sparse lettuce vine because it’s so long it falls over. What am I doing wrong?
I wish I could find neptune harvest fertilizer here in Canada.
I have never had success direct sowing lettuces. Tried many species. They either don’t sprout or sprout and the seedlings get attacked by animals and bugs. Brassicas for some reason manage to survive.
For CONTAINER lettuce, what should I do when the plants I started as seeds in the container are leggy and end up laying on the soil and not growing?
I’m getting ready to plant igloo lettuce. It grows in a head and is not susceptible to extreme heat. Howver, I am planting it in a tiered grower, and the potting soil is old. What should I apply to the potting soil whennI plant it?
Not only do I deal with the insects that want to eat everything I try to grow, I have to deal with the critters that tear up my garden every year. I even bought a netted cage to keep them out but the squirrels figured out how to get into the cage.
Use tulle... life changing
My lettuce gets leggy and falls over. I use grow lights close to the plant. I also use Kellogg potting soil. What am I doing wrong.?
I tried growing gem lettuce this past fall an only one produced leaves, which I harvested the leaves twice. I want to try again.
I'm so bummed! Planted lettuce 3 times then cave up! Diatomaceous earth and neem oil and something g munched them down each time almost overnight 😢
I did learn something! I didn't know about the sand trick. Love that one!
The sponsor of this video is a great choice as well. Thanks for letting us know about them!
Thank you Paulla ❤️
Aww the poor radishes 😌 Great video! Are dark leafy greens similiar to grow? Thank you 🌷
Yes they are!
GREAT advice as usual!!! thank you Brian!
Perfect. My wife said yesterday, " I want some lettuce this year." Right on time.
How often should you water lettuce? I used to water them everyday and soak them and it seemed like it would kill the outter part of the lettuce and turned brown there was no signs of bugs or worms idk if its because Im over watering them.
Sooooo new at the garden thing. Can I grow veges other than tomatoes in tomato potting mix in a container. What conditions, potting mix and weather wise do I need to grow salanova lettuce, do they need direct sunlight.
My new favorite is red sail lettuce.
This might be a very silly question but on the subject of aphids can you plant one or two scallion or dill plants in a large tomato container to protect the tomato plant or will i be eating tomatoes that taste like onions LOL
I tried to grow lettuce once, by the time it was tall enough for me to harvest it was very bitter. ❄️💚🙃
Harvest young!
I have seen some gardeners grow lettuce in the plastic kiddie pools. Any thoughts on that?
That can work
I grow leaf lettuce every year in hopes I'll find a type that's good and not bitter.
Very helpful advice. Thanks for posting!
You're welcome
Watching this makes me want to start a garden.
You can get a lot of seeds in the summer time, with bolting lettuce plants.
I love Buttercrunch and Red leaf lettuce.
Lettuce is turning white. Any tips?
Strange offshoot question... there is a store here called Aldi, that has a very large growbag type tote bag. I saw somewhere that those bags can be used officially as grobag as long as you cut vent holes in them. Do you concur with that ideology? Because I have a ton of those bags here at my house and would love to do container gardening in an inexpensive way. Starting with a lettuce bed
Yes I did that myself a few years ago
Years ago I had success with and enjoyed eating butter crunch.
I learned something
The shaker trick is such a great idea!
Romaine and arugula and baby spinach
