Brilliant video. I love how elephants are so protective of their young. Such huge animals but always aware of not stepping on the little ones. Sydney Australia
So beautiful thank u very much for not disturbing them. .wish all watchers were so considerate. Including trophy hunters and the horrific poachers.thank u for uf kindness and consideration to these very beautiful amazing creatures
That was beautiful and u must have nerves of steel . thanks for the wonderful video. All of yours are 😻 i look forward to seeing them every week. Love your jr baby outfit .
Wow. How amazing. It really was quite moving. Definitely a bit scary. I love (always) to see how the mom and auntie elephants inspect the calf with their trunks and help lift it up when it is getting wobbly. Hopefully that calf is a new female to grow her herd.
It's highly possible they are from a bigger herd. I have read that when a mother is about to give birth, she and her midwives/allomums with split off to have the baby in a secluded safe place. Unfortunately, the hormones released during childbirth smell like those they release when they are in season so they are in danger of being mounted by any bulls in musth mistaking the scent and being driven by it to mate. Which no one wants when they have just given birth. This happened to a Sheldrick Wildlife Trust adult orphan when she gave birth "in public" by the water trough in front of a reintegration centre (Voi or Ithumba). No one could stop the wild bull as it was massive and there were many wild elephants around the new mum. The SWT explained the new mum's herd were all former orphans and thus had never learned about the need to sequester a birthing mother. That might be more than you ever wanted to know about elephant childbirth--sorry I'm a wee bit of a Hermione. I read a lot and am compelled to share the information. 😜
I believe that mom and her sisters put that baby on the side of your vehicle for a reason the hyenas. It was a smart move Elephants are very intelligent. But you had an awesome privilege being that close to a very newborn baby elephant oh how I would love to be there. Elephant babies are the cutest.❤️🐘❤️
Well done with the calm talking and the enduring instead of startling them by starting the engine. I have to wonder if, knowing you are not a threat to them, they used you as a human shield against the hyena, who are very unlikely to take on both three protective mum and allomums, and a human in a vehicle. Elephants are smart, they used you and your jeep to help them protect the baby. Otherwise why would they take a newborn so close to a human vehicle on the other side of where they could smell the hyenas coming from a long way? Why take that risk if not to thwart a much bigger risk? They really are incredibly intelligent and intuitive. You should be proud they considered you worthy of protecting their baby! 💜💚💙🐘
This is the cutest thing ever! Watching all your videos all day.
