- One chamomile plant produces tons of flowers. Flowers are best picked on a dry day when the flowers are fully open, before the petals fall back. I found drying them on a paper plate in a dark closet for 1-2 weeks works best. Store in an air tight glass jar in a cool dark place until ready to use.

i'm trying to find someone growing chamomile as big as mine and i cant. google images shows nothing etc. my chamomile in 5 ft tall with thousands of flower heads about to branch out and bloom. idk whats going on but its the best thing going on in my garden.

@@Jag111vip This is german chamomile. They get the nice plump cone like yellow center whereas roman chamomile is a little flatter. I gro german, roman, and pineapple weed for fun.

I tried and failed and wasted lots of packs of seeds and time...Then I was told they needed light to germinate, and moisture at start but not as much later.Finally, have it coming up. Used seed starter, and left on top of soil with clear plastic bubble wrap over the seeds, watered well and after what seems quite awhile, more than 2 weeks, they started to come up, in a container..Maybe once they get started, they're easy, but it sure wasn't for me. The container was in a little greenhouse tent. Hope you have a better start.!.
Hi, I'm a newbie too! I bought 2 peach trees this year, and read that chamomile is a good companion plant, so I just sprinkled a pack of seeds directly in the topsoil around the base of the tree, and watered every day. They came up in a couple weeks! I live in USA zone 8b, in the southeast. Planted in March, I think; just now blooming a little in early June, but green growth is lush. We've had a lot of rain, so maybe that's it.

That's really great! Those flowers are beautiful! I use your same general method (air drying on a plate) for chives, redbud flowers, and elder flowers. I like the simplicity -- no special equipment at all.

The best tutorial I have seen for Chamomile so far. I am growing them for the first time this year and was wondering if more flowers will grow after a harvest. Now I know.
Yep they should though the first set of blooms is usually the biggest and best ones.

I planted german camile last year they came up in front beside our steps where i planted them they grew tall and ihad to transplant them in a long plant box they come from the shock are fine I happen to research how to know how to dry them and make tea from them. I had bought some peppermint and spearomint plants. The leaders ran wild underneath the soil i trans planted them in a plant bowl some one had so they would not go evry where
It really does make a difference and it takes less time.

They can get fairly large, especially if they are taken care of. Most of mine grow wild as volunteers and even though get pretty big. I have one this year growing in one of my beds that I water frequently and it's getting even bigger.

Kewl they grow pretty easily. I don't even have to plant it anymore I just get volunteers all over and harvest from those. :)

+William Alan Photo I started out with 4 plants but it was getting to be too much work picking all the flowers off them so I left the ones in containers go (not harvesting the flowers) and it eventually dried out and died. One good sized plant is really all you need for a good sized harvest. They produce flowers quickly. As soon as you harvest them more are ready to harvest in just a few days.

Thanks for the video. This is my first year growing German Chamomile. They are almost too pretty to harvest but I grew them to harvest to give tea to my tea-loving relatives for gifts. Have you (or anyone seeing this comment) ever tried drying them in a dehydrator? I have a counter top dehydrator and thinking about using it but if I lose flavor on the buds, I'll go with a dark closet. I want to get the most tasty tea that I can.
I haven't tried drying chamomile in the dehydrator but have tried drying other herbs and they always tend to lose a lot of their flavor/scent when I do that. I think it's better to air dry them.

Awesome! Hope you got a good harvest. They grow very well here with little effort and reseed themselves every year too so never have to plant it. :)
Very nice harvest. Do you use them for tea? My Chamomile flowers are not as big as yours look. Mine do not get full sun. I use the 'thumb nail' method of picking the flowers. I do not cut back the stems. They seem to branch out and produce more flowers. I cut back the plant a little after about a month of harvesting and the flower production slows down. After cutting back it will produce more flowers. I use a door screen in a dark room, for drying my herbs. I lay the screen across two saw horses. Really good air circulation. To preserve the oils in herbs more efficiently, herbs should be dried in the dark and the jar should be kept in the dark.
LARK'S GARDENS Yup I'm saving them up for tea. I'm doing the same thing with my calendula flowers but will be using those in my soap.
My Calendula is not blooming yet. Big buds, but no flowers. Do you dry the whole Calendula flower or just pluck the pedals? I had been using the flower. But I read where some people use just the pedals, not the center of the flower. I use mine for body butter, lotion bars and infused oil. This year I will try it as a tea, as I have heard that it makes a very healthy tea. I am glad I found your channel. It is nice to watch someone who likes herbs.
LARK'S GARDENS It's actually my first year growing both chamomile and calendula so I'm learning as I go. I was actually wondering that too about whole flower vs petals for calendula but the videos I've watched pick the whole flower but it seems like only the petals are the useful part but not really sure. I will probably use both and just grind it up after it dries and put the whole thing in my soap. Not sure how easy it would be to separate the petals from the flower after it's been dried. Maybe I'll see if I can find some more info on it.

great video and very informative! i was sitting here drinking my chamomile tea and it was my last tea bag and i thought to myself " i wonder if i could grow my own in my garden". so when you make tea with the dried product do you use the petals as well as the rest of the flower? and i know there is 2 kind of chamomile so which one is best for tea?
As far as I know you only use the petals. In my own opinion I think the rest of the flower gives a more bitter taste.
Those are beautiful! I have never grown or used them. But thank you for the how too. We have something that grows wild that looks like this. I will have to look at it and see if it is.
TheEmptynester The ones that grow wild around my area are similar but they don't really have the long white petals, the petals are pretty much non existent. They smell the same though and seem to grow fine with little to no water.

Btw, I heard it's better to store in a paper bag rather than glass, in case of any remaining moisture.
I make sure it's good and dry before putting it in a glass jar. Haven't had any problems yet. I do keep some other things in a paper bag though like mints, mainly because I have so much of it. I sprinkle it around in my chicken coop throughout the year. :)

When you make tea, do you just put the flowers in a tea ball and boil in water? That's what I've been doing with peppermint. Do you mix with other herbs, or no? Do you use for other things besides tea?
Glad it was helpful! Yep that's pretty much all I do to make tea. Sometimes I will mix it with some dried mint. I have infused some with oil before and used it to make soap.

I was getting rid of stems from my flowers once and a woman who grew up in Vietnam came over and told me that in Vietnam they use the leaves as well as the flowers in tea. You don't have to just use the flowers. Hmmm. It is true that the leaves have a weaker amount of that specific chammomile smell. Maybe that would be just as good. It sure would be easier. I'm gonna try.

No. You can just add a cup of hot water to about a tbsp of dried flowers and steep for a few mins.
Thank you for the information on chamomile. I have been growing herbs for a while. But recently, they have not been producing as they should be. So I purchased an Aerogarden. I planted some chamomile and mint teas . The chamomile is growing like wild fire but I don't see any flowers yet. I was wondering when I had to harvest it and you answered my question. I think I understand what I need to do by pointing me in the right direction. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful. I don't even have to plant it anymore. It volunteers freely in the pathways of my garden and I just let it grow. Mine just started blooming in the last couple weeks.They don't really require much nutrients if at all. It grows fine in my wood chip pathways.

most likely. There's a few different varieties of chamomile, some have larger petals than others. You would definitely know for sure if you give it a sniff. :)

My granddaughter gave me a bouquet of chamomile flowers picked off the flowers. Can I propagate from the stems or does it have to be from seeds?
No I don't believe you can propagate the stems though I have not tried it.
I’m going to finally harvest my chamomile this year instead of just letting it reseed itself! How do you make a tea out of it once it’s dry?
I use the paper tea bags and just put a few teaspoons of dried leaves in that and let it steep for a few minutes.

On our farm this and wild fragrant sage grow by the acre! I’m planning on adding 1 box of bees per acre but between this, sage, dandelion and lilac I think a person with allergies would be terminal.
Thanks, I’m off on a harvesting day now! I should be able to fill a 400 gallon container each day with chamomile flowers. Then lay them out on a screen drying deck in the sun. I’m hoping to take it and sell it dry by the 1lb baggy for at least $10? I guess I’m not sure what it’s worth...at the bulk store locally they get $37.00 lb. but I want to be fair to folks where I live.
I wouldn't dry them in the sun if you can avoid it. It's better to dry in a dark place. I bet the chamomile field smells so good!

chamomile seeds are pretty common. You could probably find it at any big hardware store that sells seeds or garden center. Otherwise tons of seed companies sell them online.

I started them at beginning of Feb and yes one plant in each pot. They get pretty big.
how long will they last in the jar?
They won't really go bad but the potency will be reduced the longer they are stored. For best results I'd probably use within 1-2 years but they will store longer but just won't be as strong.
Do you get a few harvests per season? Also; what is your growing season? I'm in the Denver CO area and usually plant around memorial day and have until mid Sept for a season. I'm wondering if I should leave the flowers until the plant grows into more maturity or if I can pluck as they start to bloom. Thanks !
yeah it will keep blooming most of the season. The more you harvest, the more it will produce so I wouldn't leave the flowers on too long, just harvest as they are ready (when the petals open up and before the center gets too big and dry).
Do you wash your chamomile/herbs before drying? I’ve been doing this both with the chamomile and the lavender I pick - the lavender soaks water like a sponge and I’ve been wondering if I have to do it (I am going to wash any wild w foraged lavenders but maybe not my homegrown if it is safe)
I personally don't. Any bugs that are in it will crawl away while it's drying. :)

Permaculture Prepper Nope didn't add any fertilizer but maybe it would have helped those in the containers. There is a lot of compost in the herb bed though. The container chamomile is starting to dry up and not produce as many flowers so they are about to go into the compost heap which is fine because it's hard to keep up with the harvesting of so many plants. The two in the herb garden are still growing well and producing lots of flowers. This video was taken several weeks ago. I harvest the ones in the herb bed about every week and the flowers don't seem to be getting much smaller than the first harvest.

After they're dry you could just shake them in a colander and any bugs that are still there should fall through.
I'm struggling for 2months now. I'm not able to grow a chamomile here in tropical country. Its rainy season.
Mine go bk every time it pours. Then they pop bk to life
Yeah I think I have some more sprouting up but they probably won't live long cuz it's starting to cool down and they like the warmer weather.

How can dry chamomile be used

What are you using as a growing medium for your potted Chamomile? I'm curious on what would happen if I moved my potted Chamomile indoors under artificial lighting over winter. Is there a definite age limit of the plant where it will die off even with adequate light.
I think I just used Miracle Grow Potting mix from Costco. I have never tried overwintering it so not sure if it will live indoors or not. It would be a good experiment to try. I think it's considered an annual so that might not work. It appears roman chamomile is considered a perennial though. I haven't tried growing that one.

@@gapey thank you for responding. I'm new to gardening and have a number of herbs from chamomile to sage and oregeno. I watch a lot of RUclips videos and no one mentions washing prior to drying. I'm nervous about the safety and sanitation of doing so if I plan to sell them. I know for sure my oregeno & thyme has small bugs crawling on it as well as dirt particles.
Does washing damage the herbs or cause them to mold before drying?
@@morganmyers6991 I wouldn't worry too much about bugs. Mine have bugs too. They will crawl off/die before the herbs are dry. If they are dirty then it's a good idea to give them a rinse. I do rinse some herbs like rosemary. If you wash them I would put them on a paper towel and pat off as much moisture as you can and keep them in an area with good air flow and they should be fine.

I don't. I want them to stay dry. Any bugs on them will crawl off or die by the time they dry completely. :)

No I don't wash any of my herbs before drying. As long as they don't touch the ground they should be fine.
i have only 1 little flower that is about to blossom...do i leave it alone in order for it to eventually get as big as your plant? or is there a reason mine haven't really grown many flowers?
not sure why yours isn't growing many flowers. they like sun so if it's in a shady spot that might be why.

Those potted chamomile look like the german variety. Am i correct? Also, if you harvest midsummer, you can get a second harvest in autumn.
Yup I'm pretty sure they are german chamomile. Yeah I pretty much get a constant flow of flowers as long as I continually harvest them. They are quite productive. It's hard to keep up with them.

What if the yellow part of the flower just falls apart after you dry it? Was the flower too old or did it dry too long?
hmm might have been an old flower. Don't think drying too long would do that.

No I've never crushed them. I dry them so no need but if you use them fresh it might be helpful to crush them before you put them in tea but probably not necessary either.

I would guess they need to be dry but I haven't tried saving or growing the seeds. I just let them reseed naturally. If they fall off the plant easily when you shake it, they should be ok to plant.

I let them dry for a few weeks. No need to flip or stir around since I put them on the plate in a single layer.

Yep the whole flower. :) But you want to harvest the flowers when the yellow part of the flower is not super big. It gets bigger as the flower gets older.
