I remember cooking at night, was cooking beef stew, so i decided to get my fresh rosemarry from the garden to spice up my stew. To my surprise my stew tasted different, only to realise i harvested lavender instead, i thought i was going to die but i am fine. Actually i noticed that Lavender tastes good on food especially chicken.
Thank you for a lovely video. We visited France several years ago and I got seeds for two varieties of French from Provence and have two lovely bushes that have flourished for several years. Now I know what to do with them
I love the vertical braided twine rope you made. I also love how you used the paperclip to hang your lavender around the rubber band. Your voice is so soothing. It was almost like a lavender harvest ASMR. Nice work. I have three bushes ready to harvest. I cannot wait to do it. I'm looking for a video for more ideas on what to do with dried lavender. Maybe how to make sachets or other adorable ideas. Thank you so much.
Hi Cathy! Thank you for sharing your wonderful video with us. I'm a newbie with growing lavender. It took a few years for me to finally realize everything I thought that I was doing right was actually wrong in terms of having the right soil. The first year, they had too much shade not enough sun, so some died, and the others that I moved to the sunny area also died because I used only miracle grow garden soil. The one that did survive was planted in my natural soil with a handful of limestone and then a little bit of sand mixed with the natural soil. It is enormous now and produces the most beautiful scented flowers that I can smell all the way to my garden shed feet away. This year, I have planted 40 more in the same area using the same method and they are thriving beautifully. It's my hope to use 1-2 acres out back to evolve into a little lavender farm. I know it's not much space, but it'll suffice for what I would like to do, which is too make lavender oils, soaps and sachets, as well as use bunches for my craft projects like yourself. I love coming across videos on lavenders, but especially love yours because it's up close and very detailed, and you genuinely have a love for what you are doing with your lavenders and other herbs. Wonderful! Thank you again, and God bless!
Oh my goodness. This sounds wonderful. 1 to 2 acres of lavender. Wow! I do wish you all the best with this. I plant a few more every year and am taking my time about building it up but I'd love to just jump right in and do much more. Full time work and a small business keeps me from doing so at the moment. Thank you very much for the kind words about the video. I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. God Bless Cathy
Thank you for that easy to follow tutorial. I am making a few to take to a friend's birthday socially distanced party tomorrow. She is a woman who has everything so this is a perfect gift for her. She certainly won't have any of these.

I cut mine after the bees have had their fill. Roll them up in small bunches, in 2 or 3 sheets of news paper, then lay them like a lattice to allow the air all around them. Takes 2 -3 weeks in my shed. Then hand strip the dried flowers and store in a airtight box for arts n crafts as needed. 😎
Hi Reshonda, I relax when I watch gardening videos. I hope your harvesting turned out well. Thank you for watching and for leaving a lovely comment. God Bless Cathy

I appreciate you mentioning to leave some for the bees… Can we also harvest after the bees are done with it and it’s somewhat dry already? I have the lighter color lavender.
Thank you for the lovely comments Barbara. Yes, I use recycled bands from the grocery store but twine or cotton string are great too. Take good care. God Bless Cathy
What type of Lavender are you using? I just got Spanish Eyes/ Fern Leaf which is nice and hardy here in the desert. I am wondering if I will be able to use this type?
Nice. Thank you. Yes the leaves are edible. Add some to your fresh greens salads. I've just dried a batch in the dehydrator, for the mixed herbs blend.
Can you do the same with french lavender ? I've just bought one and it smells divine,I have a little balcony outside my window and I'm looking forward to the scent blowing in.

Great info thanks for sharing - such an honour to have advice and experiences handed to us the present and future generations, especially now... If there is any green down deep in the bush don't give up. Trim out the dried parts and watch for more signs of life. Any tips for cutting the lavender when there are a lot of bees? I have a massive row of lavender that blooms extensively. I want to harvest the section my husband cuts away to make room for the grass. However, the lavender belongs to the neighborhood bees too and they densely populate the bush even in the early stages of bloom. I’m going to leave most of the bush for them but I want to salvage what will be cut anyways. Any tips for safely taking those? Most of the bees are honey bees along with a few cutie bumblebees. In the past they haven’t minded me smelling the flowers but I’m nervous that they’ll be on the flowers I need to cut.
You are right. The bees just adore lavender. Sometimes I can beat them to it by getting out there really early in the morning. They also seem to tire just before sundown. Most of the time I just go in and move slowly. They are so preoccupied being busy bees that they ignore me but I must admit, when there are so many of them that the lavender is humming I tend to pick another time to cut. If they are truly bees and not wasps or other more dangerous species they will probably let you join in especially if you are sure not to cut all that they are there for. God Bless Cathy
Bee's usually will not stay out once it gets a little chilly. They also try to make it back to the hive before dusk. So, cutting them really early right when the sun comes up and a little after the sun has set, are the two best times to cut if you want to avoid bees.
@@trinhzphotography350 Tfs this great tip!! I accidentally have LOADS of lavender, places I didn't even plant... and the bees LOVE it! I am here to learn how to deal with all this lovely lavender!💜
I have a quick question. How many lavender plants do you have to harvest that much? I bet it smells wonderful! Thank you for all of this information! I am definitely putting the paper clip idea to use.
Hi Hanah, I have about 10 medium sized plants of a few varieties. I try to add 1 or 2 more plants each year. I have started them from seed (takes quite a long time) and from cuttings as well. I'm so glad that you found the information helpful. Best of luck with yours:) God Bless Cathy
Hi thankyou for the video just getting in to herbs. So I cut loads of lavender put in to bunches yesterday and hung upside down in the house. I wanted to ask when they are fully dry do I need to take them down to get all the flowers off or could they stay hung upside down in my home as decoration all year round. I was just worried that if I left them hanging all the time they might start dropping the buds everywhere eventually. Any help would be really appreciated as I'm totally new to all this. Thankyou so much Carly xxx
I’m hoping I can down load this video. I’d like to get a copy of this to the sisters at our local monastery. The LOVE lavender oils I bring them and are wanting to make their own. May God bless and reward you.🙏🏻🌱
Where are all of the bees. My lavender bush is swarmed with bees. They don’t seem to bother me when I prune though. Exactly, where should I be cutting them? I’ve heard right before the second set of leaves. They look beautiful. Keep up the good work.
Hi Sharon, I actually don't collect them as Lavender does fairly well at starting with rooting cuttings so you can multiply your plants that way. Otherwise they are perennial and they make it through the winters here. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. God Bless Cathy
Huckleberry Herbs and Art I grew several different kinds of lavender and I really can’t believe they all came out first time. I live here in Indiana and I would like to try Root cutting when is the best time for that . Winter will be here soon
Sorry, just getting back to things:) They should still smell great in a pretty open jar or used in a sachet. I wonder if your seeds would sprout? TFW and commenting. God Bless, Cathy
I am harvesting some to make salves and maybe tea. Do the stems have medicinal value as well? I don't want to waste the storage space in my jars if they don't really contribute. (I will dehydrate and let steep in oil for 4-6 weeks)
To the best of my knowledge the stems and leaves contain the same/similar oils as the buds. Certainly they are strongly fragrant. I hope this helps. Good luck with your salves:) God Bless, Cathy
Yes, thank you. I enjoyed your video very much nd learned a great deal. I just purchase an indoor lavender plant so I'm going to "like" and subscribe for mor helpful hints.
I would imagine that you could. It is a little different in shape but certainly the fragrance and drying effect will be somewhat the same. God Bless Cathy
Hi Raquel, Depending on the severity of the weather in your region for the most part they should be fine. They enjoy being pruned and are a perennial (plant that returns yearly). They actually don't die back but act slightly as an evergreen. The flower spikes shoot up each year when the warm weather sets in. I hope this helps.Thank you very much for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment. God Bless Cathy
Lavender has a very strong and lasting fragrance so any way they are collected is good. The bus may be more delicate once dried if they were allowed to come to full bloom. God Bless Cathy
Hi There, Forgive my forgetfulness. I cannot remember the full name. I do believe that the word "Blue" was in the name though. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. God Bless Cathy
Yes. She reminds me of someone I grew up with in New England. Maybe just one of those "familiar" voices. Clear and almost soothing. Great video; I needed ideas for my lavender.
Kathy: I have two containers of lavender, this is the third summer for them.... So easy to grow here in Nova Scotia..I leave them out all year round on our deck which is on the East side of the house and gets full sun til mid afternoon. They are one of the first plants to show up through the soil in the early spring. The problem I have is that the plant, Lavandual angustifolia ('Munstead') has never produced any flowers...not one. If you rub your hands over the plant, the beautiful lavender aroma is there but no flowers. What is necessary to correct this?
Hi There, Thank you for watching and leaving a comment on this video. I wonder if because they are in pots they might be missing something nutritionally needed to flower. Maybe some compost with a re-potting or some store bought fertilizer would change things. You might try doing a google search on lavender fertilizer needs. They also enjoy some pruning which might inspire flower growth as well. I hope you find a solution so you can enjoy harvesting some lavender flowers yourself. God Bless Cathy
Another friend suggested a similar idea....so that's what I will do. Thanks for your quick reply with this matter. Only a suggestion, but it would be nice if photos could be added to correspondence.
Hi Jen, Oh that cake sounds lovely. Yes, if I don't have recycled bands from the store twine is perfect. TFW and for taking the time to comment. Take good care. God Bless Cathy
I've got a different variety of lavender, and I end up with SO MANY leaves it kind of looks trashy. Should I trim off all my leaves or cut the stem shorter? The lavender was here when we moved in 3 years ago, and the bushes grow insanely huge! I'm just harvesting in September, is that way too late?
Hi Jesse, I don't know what region you are in. My lavender blooms in early summer. If your blossoms have all popped open it may be more delicate for drying but it's always harvestable for the fragrance anyway. I make sachets with the imperfect stems and the leaves. How lucky you are to have large bushes. They will probably enjoy the pruning that you are doing. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. God Bless Cathy
Hi Sarah, I'm not sure where you are located but it sounds to me that they may have possibly gotten a little too dry. I would still harvest them and tend to the plants left behind accordingly. I hope this helps. Take good care. God Bless Cathy
Be careful of taking those into the house then. It may be spider mites which can spread to your house plants. I don't know that this would be cleanable. Hope this helps. God Bless Cathy
Hi Caroline, Although it could be for other reasons if you have experienced a very wet season it could be too much water. Lavender prefer a dryer condition to wet. Hope this helps. God Bless Cathy
Hi Angel, Please forgive my weakening memory. The lighter colored ones are mostly Lavandula angustifolia. The darker ones were something like super blue. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. God Bless Cathy

If they are truly bees and not wasps or other more dangerous species they will probably let you join in especially if you are sure not to cut all that they are there for.

Your voice sounds like Liv Tyler, so calming and sweet
How very kind of you:)

I have a quick question. How many lavender plants do you have to harvest that much? I bet it smells wonderful! Thank you for all of this information! I am definitely putting the paper clip idea to use.
Hi Hanah,
I have about 10 medium sized plants of a few varieties. I try to add 1 or 2 more plants each year. I have started them from seed (takes quite a long time) and from cuttings as well. I'm so glad that you found the information helpful. Best of luck with yours:)

Huckleberry Herbs and Art Thank you! I just bought 9 plants; 5 super blue and 6 hidcote, about how much lavender do you think they will produce?
Huckleberry Herbs and Art can I plant lavender in a raised bed?
Can these be hung in a greenhouse? It gets pretty toasty in there at times.
Is it better to hang them inside or outside?
Hi thankyou for the video just getting in to herbs. So I cut loads of lavender put in to bunches yesterday and hung upside down in the house. I wanted to ask when they are fully dry do I need to take them down to get all the flowers off or could they stay hung upside down in my home as decoration all year round. I was just worried that if I left them hanging all the time they might start dropping the buds everywhere eventually. Any help would be really appreciated as I'm totally new to all this. Thankyou so much Carly xxx
Thank you so much for sharing this tips and sharing your experience with lavender... God Bless you i have learned a lot and i enjoy your video..

thank you for your reply, God Bless you more
I’m hoping I can down load this video.
A lot of smart and useful ideas. Thank you.
Great video can you tell How do you collect those seeds for next year
Hi Sharon,
I actually don't collect them as Lavender does fairly well at starting with rooting cuttings so you can multiply your plants that way. Otherwise they are perennial and they make it through the winters here. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Huckleberry Herbs and Art I grew several different kinds of lavender and I really can’t believe they all came out first time. I live here in Indiana and I would like to try Root cutting when is the best time for that . Winter will be here soon
What a lovely voice Cathy has.

I LOVE LAVENDER!!!! I've made lavander ice cream before😍
Wow! That is really cool, I didn’t know you can do that!
💜💜💜
I think I harvested the lavender too late because I have hundreds of seeds on my table. What do you do with your lavender when that happens?
Sorry, just getting back to things:) They should still smell great in a pretty open jar or used in a sachet. I wonder if your seeds would sprout?
TFW and commenting.
God Bless,
Cathy
I am harvesting some to make salves and maybe tea. Do the stems have medicinal value as well? I don't want to waste the storage space in my jars if they don't really contribute. (I will dehydrate and let steep in oil for 4-6 weeks)
To the best of my knowledge the stems and leaves contain the same/similar oils as the buds. Certainly they are strongly fragrant. I hope this helps. Good luck with your salves:)
God Bless,
Cathy
Yes, thank you. I enjoyed your video very much nd learned a great deal. I just purchase an indoor lavender plant so I'm going to "like" and subscribe for mor helpful hints.
What happens if you harvest too late after the buds pop open?
They will be a little more volatile but they still smell wonderful. Tfw and commenting.

How many times does the lavender flower in a year?
It has one main bloom but (especially if harvested) it will ssometimes put out a second lighter bloom.

Cathy
Where do you get the sachets
I want to use for soap and satchels
I wish you a really Happy New Year.
Happy new year to you! Thanks so much for the watch and comment.

Can I do this with french lavender?
I would imagine that you could. It is a little different in shape but certainly the fragrance and drying effect will be somewhat the same.

Cathy
Do they grow back?
will the lavender grow back?
raquel assal yeah sure
Hi Raquel,
Depending on the severity of the weather in your region for the most part they should be fine. They enjoy being pruned and are a perennial (plant that returns yearly). They actually don't die back but act slightly as an evergreen. The flower spikes shoot up each year when the warm weather sets in. I hope this helps.Thank you very much for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment.
God Bless
Cathy
Course it will
I live in michigan and mine came back bigger and better than last year and it was a pretty hard winter.
What if I didn’t pick them when they were still in full bloom, can I still do something with my dried up blooms?
Lavender has a very strong and lasting fragrance so any way they are collected is good. The bus may be more delicate once dried if they were allowed to come to full bloom.

What kind are these called? I’d like to get seeds to grow.
Hi There,
Forgive my forgetfulness. I cannot remember the full name. I do believe that the word "Blue" was in the name though. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Cathy
Could you use the darker purple lavender for sachets or is the lighter blue better?thx
All of the colors are beautifully fragrant. Tfw.

Great video! Beautiful harvest!!!
What are the names of the lavender? And how did you grow them?
I love your voice! Also the advice was really helpful thank you

Hi There,
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment on this video.

Another friend suggested a similar idea....so that's what I will do. Thanks for your quick reply with this matter. Only a suggestion, but it would be nice if photos could be added to correspondence.

Lavender lemon cake! An I find twine or something works better, make a loupe and pull it through. Also make a loupe at the other end!
Hi Jen,
Oh that cake sounds lovely. Yes, if I don't have recycled bands from the store twine is perfect. TFW and for taking the time to comment. Take good care.

Hi Jesse,
I don't know what region you are in.

@@HuckleberryHA - Cathy, I'm in Wyoming. That makes sense why you would use the leaves for sachets, thanks for that tip!
HI! Mine are going little yellow. I got english lavender...should I harvest them or shall I leave them?
Also the inner side i going brown:/
Hi Sarah,
I'm not sure where you are located but it sounds to me that they may have possibly gotten a little too dry. I would still harvest them and tend to the plants left behind accordingly. I hope this helps. Take good care.

Huckleberry Herbs and Art i am in UK
Do you ever have to clean the lavender??? Mine had spiderwebs and tiny flies on 80% of the buds... :(
Be careful of taking those into the house then. It may be spider mites which can spread to your house plants. I don't know that this would be cleanable. Hope this helps.

Any witches here? I wanna dry some for smudge sticks.
Mirella Meulen witch here!! Growing my own lavender at the moment ^^
CherryChuzzi i’m a witch and i’ve actually been growing my own lavender too !! also have some calendula and roses growing :))
I actually just burned a lavender smudge from last spring tonight. Just harvested my first bit for this summer. I’m excited!
lol here
Yessssssss
I cut mine to the first leaves where they were purple. This year I’ve noticed a lot of brown underneath. is that from too much water?
Hi Caroline,
Although it could be for other reasons if you have experienced a very wet season it could be too much water. Lavender prefer a dryer condition to wet. Hope this helps.
God Bless
Cathy
Huckleberry Herbs and Art thank you for the reply I cut a lot of it off I hope that’s okay, we have had quite a bit of rain in Texas
thank you for sharing your knowledge.

My lavender is growing well but it has developed white woody stems in a few spots. Does anyone know if that is normal.
Will the cuttings root?
Yes, they certainly will, with a little care. Most of my 40 or so plants are from cuttings.
Xmas ornament hooks work great too!
Is that English lavender?
whats the name of the viriety. i would love to have one
Hi Angel,
Please forgive my weakening memory. The lighter colored ones are mostly Lavandula angustifolia. The darker ones were something like super blue. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

Cathy, your calming voice is a sexy trait. 😊
About how long does it take for one of the bundles to dry?
Hi Maile,
I find that in the right conditions just about two weeks will do. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment.
