I’ve worked in TV production and my first guess was that the teleprompter was either off or too fast. The news anchor should always have something to say since it’s always pre written.
I had always thought they rolled part of the VO out of order, but having the prompter operator screw up is pretty terrible too. Thats why most on-air talent get to do it themselves with a foot pedal. At university TV stations you’re stuck with super old tech though.
Yes, thank you for this comment! I just want to scream DUH. I'm shocked that people don't understand that basically news people are teleprompter readers.
Given your experience you should appreciate the boom goes the dynamite part was an epic and very professional real time response. Ppl mock this guy, but this is literally a grad school lesson on how to go handle a breakdown on a live broadcast. He kept it general and didn't stutter or give up. This man deserves our applause. That said it's funny AF after the fact, only serving to make it more epic imho
I wouldnt mind seeing more topics like this one. I had completely forgotten that the clip was about him stumbling over his words I only remembered the dynamite bit.
Wow, I’ve seen the original boom goes the dynamite clip. but I never realised how much of a train wreck the behind the scenes of the broadcast was and the what happened to guy behind it. Good to see he’s doing well in his news career. Great video as always!
My favorite fact is he was on a film pitch to make a movie around early internet memes (like double rainbow guy, WoW freak out guy.) He makes a speech about being known for the one thing...before saying his one thing. Lady Emily did a whole video that's totally worth a watch!
I’m glad he’s doing good! I have absolutely no clue why people send hate mail and death threats etc to anyone popular. Like bruh, how did him not doing it perfectly ruin your life to the point where you need to write hate mail?
I interviewed Brian for a multimedia position probably over a decade ago, at a company in the same town as KSAX was in. He personally recounted the story of this event in the interview and from his mouth, it is exactly as you documented. Glad to see he went on to peruse his career in media production. And yeah filling in for the normal person, teleprompter was going way to fast and not a subject matter he was knowledgeable about.
This is an interesting video I never heard anything about this before, nice job on the video. When you do another Kitchen Nightmares video let’s find out what happened to Chappy’s after the show.
Brian is my exhusbands cousin. He is pretty cool young man. I haven't seen him in years and never new him very well but I remember when this happen and how he handled it actually benefitted him on the long run. Thanks for doing this story and showing everyone how successful Brian is. ❤️
Wow it’s so weird knowing my University helped make Internet history! I think I can provide some clarification on a few things. (For reference, I am a journalism student at Ball State) Newslink is broadcasted locally through public access. It reaches the city of Muncie (where the university is located.) and some of the area outside it. Many students work with the organization in some form, either for a class or for a resume. You asked why the camera didn’t just cut away, but that’s mostly due to it being a completely student run broadcast. There’s maybe one professional who supervises the operation, but mostly the students are self trained. So mistakes like the teleprompter moving too quick or a graphic being added early are very common!
I was just thinking about this guy a few days ago! He’s a legend. I remember seeing him on some dumb show back in the day, maybe tosh.0? And he did a live commentary on a public park basketball game. It was great.
I know these videos not about gordon Ramsey get less views. But that doesn't at all reflect on the quality of your work. I very much enjoy these and learning more about internet culture i didn't know about before. Ty for the content
I'm so glad this had a happy ending! I felt so bad for this guy. I did a bit of news stuff for a semester in college, and it was super intimidating being on camera with nothing but bright lights and a teleprompter
Oh wow I almost forgot about this reporter when I last watched some video about news fail. Honestly I don't blame him though because it is definitely equivalent to when you have to do a presentation live to the students on Zoom...
Yeah, as someone who went to BSU and was the same major, I’ve seen things like this happen time and time again in the department. The school of communications/journalism at BSU has a chronic issue of putting freshman into positions where they were set up to fail. Right at the beginning of my studies, they put someone from my high school (who was the same age as me) as the Head Copy Editor for the newspaper. That didn’t last long, of course, and the stress nearly drove her into changing her major. Things like that happened every year. As for where Newslink would air, at least during my four years there, it broadcast out to everywhere in the county (Delaware County, IN, in case anyone was wondering).
Your videos are so good there's so many similar content creators out there that just skim over and and totally screw up the content and the information. Like where are they now in kitchen nightmares and hotel hell creators. Keep up the great work looking forward to the next video.
Funny thing, I went to college with a guy also named Brian Collins. We were at Central Michigan, which is in the same NCAA conference as Ball State. It was a good few years after this aired, but nice coincidence.
As a sportswriter, I've loved watching this clip from time to time just to cheer me up. And, every now and then I'll drop the "Boom Goes the Dynamite" with friends just for fun.
Fun fact: a new station I worked for out of Duluth, MN sent a reporter to a dangerous situation somewhere between Duluth and Alexandria, MN, where Brian worked for KSAX. Our reporter immediately recognized the BGTD kid and they chatted. Both of their missions were to get some person to talk about a murder that happened there, so being that our reporter had more experience that BGTD, he went to chat and BGTD stayed back. Turns out the person thought our reporter was trespassing and pulled out a gun. He ran away and hid behind the news van with BGTD. The person fired a shot or two and our reporter and BGTD decided it was time to GTFO. That actually became the story that night.. not the neighbor of a murderer, but our reporter took cover with BGTD while a psycho shot towards them. Pretty incredible stuff.
The reason the letterman clip can’t be found is because letterman’s company doesn’t want to release old episodes. They only started a RUclips channel like 2 months ago
Nice it worked out for him. It reminds me of Larry King's first time on the air from his book. He had dead air and in his headphones the producer is yelling for him to just say something!
Ha! Great to hear. If you look at it from a entrepreneur perspective, it took some balls to jump in like that at the age of 19. He obviously used this to better himself in the long run. Good on him :)
Honestly the first time I saw this in a video production class I called immediately that there probably was an issue with the teleprompter. Cause honestly he really didn't do to horribly considering he probably had no time for prep, no teleprompter, basically no script, and little to no experience. Most people in a similar experience usually just freeze entirely or just come out and say there is a technical issue.
“Passes it to THE MAN, THE MAN SHOOTS”??? lol my gosh, funny thing is I think that’s LeBron James. Jason Kidd and him must love this clip lol. I was in college when this happened, I remember thinking how awesome RUclips was when I first saw this.
This guy should be proud. His line was picked up by Seth Macfarlane for the Cleveland character XD, If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have so much laughter from the Family Guy show and the spin off.
Honestly lol...Bill O'Riley is ...well, Bill O'Riley. But his "WE'LL DO IT LIVE!" meme makes sense knowing that the Teleprompter is most likely to blame for his outrage . Watching this puts it into perspective.
Ball state alum, this dude is a legend at ball state. Our letterman building was built that year. How the hell you not do any research on ball state before doing this? Don’t even know it’s in Muncie I bet. Lmao you are oblivious.
He may have fked up (which was out of his control) but he's achieved so much in the end. I bet many people who mocked him continue living in mommys basement.
I’ve worked in TV production and my first guess was that the teleprompter was either off or too fast. The news anchor should always have something to say since it’s always pre written.

Yeah, it's clearly going too fast. Seems like someone is playing a prank on him
Given your experience you should appreciate the boom goes the dynamite part was an epic and very professional real time response. Yeah, I came here to type the same thing 😂
I wouldnt mind seeing more topics like this one. I had completely forgotten that the clip was about him stumbling over his words I only remembered the dynamite bit.
Same!
To be fair, that's the only bit most people remember 😂 What a legacy to live, amirite?
Wow, I’ve seen the original boom goes the dynamite clip. but I never realised how much of a train wreck the behind the scenes of the broadcast was and the what happened to guy behind it. Good to see he’s doing well in his news career. Great video as always!
When you see your mistakes go public: “oh no”
Oh my gosh this poor man during that first broadcast. He needs a hug
Nah, he needs a tranquilizer
My favorite fact is he was on a film pitch to make a movie around early internet memes (like double rainbow guy, WoW freak out guy.) He makes a speech about being known for the one thing...before saying his one thing. Lady Emily did a whole video that's totally worth a watch!
I love Lady Emily!
The "Oh no" part was pretty funny.
But good for Brian!
I’m glad he’s doing good! I have absolutely no clue why people send hate mail and death threats etc to anyone popular. Like bruh, how did him not doing it perfectly ruin your life to the point where you need to write hate mail?
Cool. Glad to see he’s doing way better than any of us expected
honestly you can remove the expected from your sentence it'll still be true :p
@@superdepressif6047 no it wouldnt... maybe for you tho lol
hate mail for this guy? cmon. Always figured he had the wrong script, pretty close
He should of passed the script to the man
I have nothing but respect for this guy. He tried, screwed up, tried again and got it right in the end. Good for him.
I interviewed Brian for a multimedia position probably over a decade ago, at a company in the same town as KSAX was in. Glad that he's doing so much better in his career. He does a good job in his later work.

Why tf you leave your husband
@@guyincognito320Bit of a personal question isn't it?

This guy has bigger balls then most
Well you would know
I was just thinking about this guy a few days ago! He’s a legend. I remember seeing him on some dumb show back in the day, maybe tosh.0? And he did a live commentary on a public park basketball game. It was great.
Yeah, I wouldn’t call TOSH O., dumb…….
i like when a story ends well. Bullies are the worst
Wow. I completely forgot about this guy.
This was a good meme for a long time
I just thought it was a Family Guy quote lol.... Cleveland used to say 'aaaaaaand boom goes the dynamite'
His delivery is so awkward that my brain just thinks it's a youtube poop.
I know these videos not about gordon Ramsey get less views. But that doesn't at all reflect on the quality of your work. I very much enjoy these and learning more about internet culture i didn't know about before. Ty for the content

I always had a feeling that there was a problem with the teleprompter, thanks for confirming.
Oh wow I almost forgot about this reporter when I last watched some video about news fail. Honestly I don't blame him though because it is definitely equivalent to when you have to do a presentation live to the students on Zoom...

This channel is pure gold ngl
Pleasant surprise to see a new MermaidGrove video!
Wouldn't mind seeing more content branching out of kitchen nightmares.
Keep it up
As a sportswriter, I've loved watching this clip from time to time just to cheer me up. And, every now and then I'll drop the "Boom Goes the Dynamite" with friends just for fun.
Good video, I'm happy that Brian found success, he looks very confident and professional in his later clips
So wholesome. I love it.
One video i'd love to see you make would be on Amy's Bakery, the episode it was featured in was wild.
Hey if he can laugh at himself, I can laugh with him. Good on him for moving on and growing.
Knowing the context changed everything!!! Props to him for taking a risk!!! People don’t anymore…
me talking to women
Will you be doing a mama cherri kitchen nightmare video? you know the only restaurant Gordon actually like the food

Love you for this update. Although this tosh thing was probably bad for Brian seeing as tosh is very disreputable in the Industry as a whole
The small "Oh no" genuinely makes it all better.
Edit.
Knowing that this was posted online without the approval of the dude should be talked to.
Interesting video and i like some variation
Keep up the good content
I hope you're enjoying making these videos as much as I like watching them. I can't believe I forgot about this guy lmao. Poor dynamite dude.
I love boom goes the dynamite. Bless this man.
I would have those hiccups during my high school broadcasting. I'm glad those moments were rare.
"oh no" lololol infamous last words
This is so wholesome

I thought of going into broadcasting when I was young and dumb, then I heard that they always start you out in sports.
Nice it worked out for him. It reminds me of Larry King's first time on the air from his book. He had dead air and in his headphones the producer is yelling for him to just say something!
Great analysis

Please upload more videos :( I love your videos haha
Omg- I literally go to this university now
I didn’t know this was from our little news thing😭😭
I really feel bad for this guy. I've been there
A happy ending, nice.
grape lady next!

"what the authorities are worried about is when this snow gets compacted down until boom goes the snowball"
So youre saying if my mere existence is cringe….i can move past it?
Impossible
I remember watching this on tosh, funny stuff
He did well to carry on regardless. That takes balls.
“Passes it to the man” is so funny 😂
I went to high school with him.
“Passes it to THE MAN, THE MAN SHOOTS”???
lol my gosh, funny thing is I think that’s LeBron James. Jason Kidd and him must love this clip lol.

Good for you Brian!
Im Brian Collins, and boom goes the dynamite!

He became President in 2020
Oh man! I'm sure he dies inside every time someone says to him, "Boom, goes the dynamite".
Glad he rebounded
and it’s good! (silence)
bro teaches how to stay in the pocket when things get rough and that usually things work out
he sounds like kyle mooney from his "interviews"
I once almost drowned at my high school’s swimming competition xD
I thought Cleveland from family guy came up with boom goes the dynamite ?
Painful
Nice
This is basically the same thing as bombing during a stand up set. You gotta learn from it, and get back up there.
So he continues on his career, but never took the time to explain the incident?
To shreds you say… tsk tsk tsk tsk
In his defense nobody cares about Ball State's woman's sports. When it came to men's ports he nailed it with 'boom goes the dynamite'
Tragic? The dude knew exactly what he was doing... BOOM GOES MY DYNAMITE
Succeeding in your career?
boom goes the dynamite!
I’m gonna say something that people may found controversial. If you let embarrassing moments in your life hold you back, you are weak minded.
Okay. You need to give a goddamned trigger warning for cringe levels that high. That poor guy almost killed me
I mean..that's better than me
Hi, Fred Fuchs
No im sure that was cleveland brown. That red head was hot, boom goes the dynamite
Ball state alum, this dude is a legend at ball state. Our letterman building was built that year. How the hell you not do any research on ball state before doing this? Don’t even know it’s in Muncie I bet. Lmao you are oblivious.
