Love Panic (been seeing them since the mid 80's when they were playing the college circuit) but Phish fits the same description as your first sentence. No need for competition - it's all good. Both Anastasio and Herring transcend most others.
Jimmy is such an incredible guitarist, he can play so many different types of solos. Three totally different solos in the first song in this video. The musicianship in this band is really high. Seriously impressive soundscapes.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but, I think Jimmy played better when Todd was driving the bus. JH seemed to stay in the pocket with the rhythm better in those days. Not complaining at all, still LOVE to watch/listen to him now.
Duane adds a different flavor n flow, took jimmy time to get adjusted but the second set of all 3 RR shows is exactly why this band is the best. Saint Ex was disgusting
