    Can attest that just learning to stay on a horse bareback is a challenge…add casting at a small moving target and you have a 10/10 degree of difficulty. Remarkable

      I would expect it's a quarter horse, the same horse that tends to be employed for roping and stock handling and a lot of rodeo events. It seems to specifically be a fairly large specimen, but thats hard to say on a video..
      That's a VERY valuable and extremely well trained horse, you practically have to live with an animal to become that good of a team, most people can't stay on a trotting horse in a straight line without a saddle and stirrups, and this guy looks more like a damned centaur than a human. The hunters in Spain use stirrups, this is on a whole different level of difficulty.

    • @thatdairykid1461
      @thatdairykid1461 5 месяцев назад

      @@charlesparr1611I would agree with quarter horse there's so much variation throughout the breed it's a pretty safe guess.

    • @ITSMRFOXY
      @ITSMRFOXY 4 месяца назад

      @@charlesparr1611if you look closely, the horse does not cross its hands when turning, which means that the horse was probably not trained for quick maneuvering. Props to the rider for still being able to succeed at hunting with such a horse.

    • @charlesparr1611
      @charlesparr1611 4 месяца назад

      @@ITSMRFOXY I am no expert, but I used to hang out with one a bit. My understanding is that horses trained for hunting dangerous animals (wild hogs are pretty dangerous when angry) are trained not to risk slips and falls as that ends up with a rider dealing with a boar tusk in their groin. This means they are often trained to be far more conservative in footwork, not relying on a single leg and never crossing their legs at all.
      I used to know someone who did horsed combat, she started off using horse she took to rodeos, had to purchase another horse and train it from the ground up to use very specific movements.
      This might have more to do with the specific act the horse is being trained for than the level of training.

    I would think that lancing them might prove better, have you tried that? longer edged point, you would be able to twist it manually to increase the wound trauma and make the hog bleed out much faster. You would also be able to retain the lance to thrust a second and third time. The horse you're riding is very well trained by the way, I'm not a horseman but I have studied mounted combat from a theoretical POV and I have some idea of what it takes. I'm extremely impressed.
    For an example of the. lance technique I mean, look for video of lancers 'tent pegging'.... It was a common display of skill by cavalry men right up into the 1850s, and I think some of the Native American tribes still retain the traditions as well.

    However, the golden rule is NEVER throw your spear. It can bounce and impale both horse and rider, and there are several recorded instances of this. India used to be the home of pig sticking, but with most of the riding country under the plough, this Sport had largely died out

    Throwing the spear should be avoided. Specially if you are hunting as a team. It is dangerous and can hurt other hunters and horses. Open fields with no obstruction of trees, bushes,nallas or tall grass is a very easy kill. I had the pleasure of attending the Khadir Cup in UP, India organised by the Meerut Tent Club then now by the RVC centre. That too has been stopped. Pig Sticking there was a real daredevil sport. Khadir Cup winner was the best Cavalry Regiment then.

      Feral hogs have been a problem since the very first ones escaped the people who brought them across oceans. They breed like rabbits and will destroy the ecosystem they take root in. They are an invasive species even if it is man’s fault, and indigenous populations suffer greatly under their numbers. Not to mention damage to the fields and crops that feed us.

    This is really cool. The horse, the spears, the feral hogs, seeing how it was done for thousands and thousands of years.
    I think this is where I likely draw the line - **FOR MYSELF** - on what I feel is “ethical” and efficacious.
    1) meat science has taught us that an animal under stressful conditions will have poorer meat quality than one that wasn’t
    2) at least one of those hits was so far back in the guts, and the thing just stood there, trying to square off on the horse, and took a lot longer to tip over than a well-placed bullet or slug or arrow would have taken. And that bothers me - they are still an animal that offers an amazing bounty - the leather is as tough or tougher than 90% of other domestic leather. The fat can be rendered for lard. The meat is generally pretty great to eat. Idk.
    I think this is where I draw the line for myself. I am not drawing the line for anyone else. Or even saying I disapprove - it’s just where I’m drawing the line for me.
    Yes, I know it’s hunting and yes, I know bad hits happen.
    I feel like there is this pervasive idea that bc there are so many pigs and they do so much damage and they’re unregulated for hunting that we can just do whatever we want to them.

    • @Userqiehdn

      How do you think do wild predatory animals kill their prey? Most of them kill them in a even more brutal fashion, especially the few predators that would take on wild boars.

    • @hunt_trap_fish
      @hunt_trap_fish 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Userqiehdnyeah. I’m entirely aware. I hunt feral pigs; I hunt white-tailed deer; ducks; pheasant; geese - I run a trap line.
      What you didn’t address is ethics. Animals are not “ethical” - they care about their own survival - end of story. I don’t blame a wild animal for being wild. I don’t blame them for doing what they need to do to survive.
      What I said was, this is where I draw the line, **for me, personally** on ethics.
      I didn’t say “no one should ever hunt like this ever again” or go off on not hunting pigs or even the sport of hunting.
      Comparing wild animals and human beings and their own ethics is like comparing a blackberry to a palm tree.
      So wildly different it can’t really be done.
