Great Job Chickanic. I'm a 72 year old and have been doing mechanic stuff since about 11 or 12. I find that I try to keep an open mind and learn some little something all along. About the spark plug. you have learned that and won't do it again. All the old heads learned by trial and error or by a mentor. You are a smooth mechanic. Like to watch you work.

If you put a short piece of vacumn hose over the end of the plug you can spin it right in and just use the socket to tighten it. Works great on plugs that are hard to see.

Got taught a nice tip by a really old guy with spark plugs that works with most things with a thread. Very gently when you insert it, turn it the wrong way till you feel it 'pop' slightly as the thread starters over-run each other, you're now lined up, tighten the correct way. It's almost impossible to cross-thread doing this.

Yep the Kohler Commander series is a great engine as well as my Courage series.
One thing i dislike about Kohler`s is the oil dipstick when checking oil level. The Command series i have says to remove then place in oil tube then read the level and the other series engine it says to tighten the dipstick in fully then remove /check. Sometimes i forget which is which. I prefer the tighten down dipstick versus the dip and check style as the dip style is not as accurate. Oh well can`t have everything

You can do yourself a favor & ditch that
pipe where the motor oil drains from.
Replace it with a hose barb & length
of rubber fuel line 3/8" ID. Don't
forget to clamp both ends of the
hose with good screw type fuel line
hose clamps. On the end of the
hose I put a nylon fitting into
which a 1/2" nylon plug fits. This
allows the hose to reach you

Interesting I think it's great that you show the simple stuff like installing a spark plug lot of people may not actually know that however you should show them how to start it properly and you never start a spark plug properly using a ratchet you always started either with the tip of your finger and get the thread started if you could reach it or with just the socket and make sure it's not cross-threaded and make sure it starts threading in there and I like to use a little dab of anti-seize on the spark plug just as a rule of thumb and it doesn't even have like a V-Twin command on it my guys should come Cadet I think was less than that new and I don't know if comparable but that's what I have her Cubs and they seem to be pretty heavy duty as well

This was a good video indeed, she forgot to make sure that all the fuel was drained out by pouring in some oil while the drain was still open. Sounds like a waste of oil, but had to do that on my Kawasaki V-Twin motor when this happened. Also had to replace the carb on it, and the fuel pump. Chickanic did however do a No-No for the spark plug install. "NEVER NEVER NEVER, install the spark plug with the ratchet first! Always start it and run it in by hand, so you don't cross-thread the spark plug! Once it's threaded in correctly then tighten the rest of the way using the ratchet. Just trying to save people problems and possible use of Heli-coils in the future.

Did your engine have hydraulic valve lifters? If so,10w-30 oil is recomended by kohler. Plus, a little "never-seize" on spark plug save on future problem. Good video!

If you live in the south 30w is fine. And nothing on the sparkplug threads. IT'S NOT THE SPACESHUTTLE as Taryl would say.

I run 15w40 here in FL , has 1200 ppm of zinc, which is good for the lifters and the Aluminum connecting rod.

Depends on the plugs, lots of them have coatings from the factory where they don't sieze. I know NGK and AC Delco specifically say not to use anti-sieze on some of their plugs

It is mixed up in the petrol - she obviously hadn't driven much since last oil change. I've done that in a car, it becomes thin as water. Oh, and I spun a few of the berings too

The same thing used to happen to cars with mechanical fuel pumps. That's why the manufactures put a hole in the pump body so a bad diaphragm would leak gas outside the engine instead of inside. That lesson was learned about 55 years ago. Kohler didn't forget to put a hole in pump body, they made it that way on purpose.

Nice thing about a kohler command is the oil filter drain. (just a little hint for you).

    • @Chickanic
      @Chickanic  2 года назад +1

It can be used for that, but many, if not most, of the Kohler Command engines do not have this plug. That is why I tried to show homeowners how to catch the mess. Here is a video of a Kohler Command that does not have that plug.ruclips.net/video/VtL06Ibh930/видео.html Thanks for watching!

This is the first of your videos I've watched so I look forward to going back over your entire library to watch lots more. Thanks for doing such a great job!
That said, I might have done a couple things slightly differently. I would have tried to source and replace the fuel pump diaphragm and clean/re-gap the original spark plug. Even with a new plug I still always check the gap before installing. I also would have removed that ziptie and tag next to the fuel pump, but that's just my "A-type" personality. ;-) In terms of production and education I would have mentioned what might cause the fuel pump diaphragm to fail (ethanol or age and stiffening to the point of a rupture?) and how that would allow fuel to leak into the crankcase (did it go into the cylinder and bypass the rings and then down into the crankcase?). I would have wanted a close look at the spark plug to confirm what might have been happening over time because maybe the pump diaphragm leaked slightly before rupturing completely. I'm all about learning diagnostics, how the engine actually works, repairs and possible changes in maintenance in the future rather than firing the parts cannon if I can avoid it.
One unconnected question - do you always start your mowing clockwise around the perimeter before turning around and mowing the rest counter-clockwise? I've always done that with my self-propelled mower because I could get in closer to the edge due to the discharge chute sticking out further on the right side. I recently found a freebie tractor on the side of the road, repaired it and got it going again (my very first tractor, at age 74). When I started using it I found starting in the counter-clockwise direction makes more sense, maybe because the mower deck cuts the same distance from the tractor centerline on both sides and the discharge chute was missing so I could get in as close either way (and of course you always want to discharge onto the side you've already mowed if you're not bagging, which is against my religion). :)

I had kohler command with a mechanical fuel pump on a husq. tractor that had the tank under the hood. When the pump died I raised the tank 1-1/2 inches and eliminated the pump completely. I just sold it after 22 years of ownership.

One more dumb design by Kohler. Having a fuel pump that allows fuel into the crank case is a great way to wash out the rings and destroy the cylinder. It would be a good idea for owners to monitor their oil level after every use and smell the dip stick. Any smell of fuel indicates a cracked diaphragm and even a slow egress of fuel over time will destroy that engine. Great video! I normally find this to be caused by carburetor issues on other engines.

I was interested in buying one of those Kubota residential mowers, but the dealer only was able to get a small number of them at one time in the year. So now I have a big box Husqvarna riding mower which is ok, but won't last like a Kubota.
