Correction: I accidentally said that The Great Ace Attorney takes place in the early years of the 19th century but it actually takes place near the end of the century. EDIT (2022): I would also like to add that I overlooked an important aspect of Ace Attorney's history in my video. After completing Ace Attorney 3 in 2004, Shu Takumi tried to move away from the franchise at the time and develop what would eventually become Ghost Trick. Takumi was not initially planning to work on AA4 and was hoping to only supervise a new team that would direct the title. However, that new team ran into development troubles and Takumi ended up becoming the 4th game's writer regardless. So you could say that the "dominion effect" I mentioned in the conclusion actually began in 2004. You can read more about this period in the franchise's history in this interview: gyakutensaibanlibrary.blogspot.com/2021/07/a-long-interview-with-developers-core.html
I believe it takes place like around 1902 or 1903. Because of a certain historical figure that shows up in chapter 4. So it would be the beginning of the 20th century.
@@andrewfarrenkopf3408 I actually couldn't find an exact date the game takes place in but the official product page on Nintendo's eShop says "late 19th century".
@@bowloflentils Strange, the reason I said it was early 20th century was because of the defendant in chapter 4. He's a real person, and was only in London from 1901-1903. But it is a fictional story, so these dates could have been moved around etc.
@@andrewfarrenkopf3408 Case 3 of TGAA2 is confirmed to be "at the turn of the century", so TGAA1 would be 1899 and TGAA2 (at least Cases 3 to 5) would be 1900.
My favorite part of the game is that Ace Attorney and Professor Layton are canonically set in the same universe despite being owned by different companies.
@@ryanm8529 But I mean, there's not really anything contradicting it in the mainline titles for either game? And both companies had a say in the development of this. So unless one company (likely Capcom) says it's non-canon, it's canon.
@@Rot8erConeX The Professor Layton series stands its roots on the "magic/supernatural doesn't exist" and instead finds a "scientific" explanation for the bizarre events that happen in the series (ok, sometimes even these 'scientific' explanations are quite over the top, like in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box or even in Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright itself, but it still mantains this position). On the other side, Ace Attorney embraces some supernatural elements, like Maya and Pearl Fey being able to channel the spirits of the dead, Phoenix being able to see the lies in someone's statements in the form of Psyche Locks, and many others (Athena, Apollo, Trucy... just to name a few). It looks really implausible that both series could be canon in the same universe.
It's officially non canon, but at the same time there's nothing about the game that really contradicts the extablished timelines of either series. In fact, Great Ace Attorney feels so much like the crossover that i dont mind considering it canon at all.
@@Emboarbof professor layton is a bit weird with that because itll be like "oh time travel isnt real" but then turn around and go "ok it kind of is." honestly i think it just depends on whether the plot requires magic to be real or if it can be reliably explained with science lol
Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright, despite its shaky development, and admittedly slightly mediocre climax, is honestly an incredible title, with excellent music, visual style, puzzles, and trials throughout it's entire run time, while keeping a strong pace and introducing interesting elements throughout. It's probably my 2nd favorite title for each franchise respectively.
Despite everything, this crossover is still one of the most ambitious and incredible project coming from both Capcom and Level-5. I still remember the day I bought and played this game for the first time, it was incredible. I grew up as a Layton fan, since in my country AA never reached as much popularity as the former, but now I want to try some instalments of the franchise, I’ll probably buy the bundle of the trilogy + the great ace attorney
While the crossover was undoubtedly a major venture for Level-5, it was fairly normal for Capcom. The company basically set the precedent for Video Game crossovers, having multiple crossover franchises under their belt at the time like Marvel vs Capcom or Project X Zone; not to mention smaller scale crossovers in their games like Dante in SMT3:Nocturne. Besides, AA is a relatively low-priority franchise among Capcom’s library - not that they treat their more successful IPs much better. In retrospect, Level-5 was likely willing to take the risk at the time because the Layton series was floundering after the conclusion of Layton’s arc in Unwound Future and the series had seen a sharp decline in sale after the move to 3DS. Level-5 was already looking for another IP to set as their flagship franchise; one of the big candidates being Yokai Watch which was in development at the time and was set for a major franchise release complete with an anime and manga. I think if this game was financially successful and the story-puzzle genre was truly ambitious , we would have seen a crossover between Layton, AA and one of Spike Chunsoft’s murder mystery games since Chunsoft already have frequent crossovers through their Mystery Dungeon series.
I was basically the same. I’d played Layton a ton, but never tried AA when I played the crossover. The trial segments got me hooked. I actually really enjoyed all the newer 3ds games. And the crossover itself is always going to be a favorite for its story and soundtrack. Hope they get their own rereleases eventually. I’ve had enough of the original gba trilogy, good as it is.
it's really funny bc growing up i was a PL fan, and i hadn't really heard of AA until i heard about the crossover. so my first ever AA game WAS the crossover, and ever since then i've been hooked on the series. AJAA is also my favorite mainline AA game, and i was always bummed that it never got the true continuation i thought it deserved, but this video really shed light on a lot of curious questions i had, so thank you for this!!
This!!! I have been into AA ever since the anime's release, and it's kind of a shame that AA4's threads were left hanging. I like AA5 and 6 as individual games, or taken as split entries with no connections to the past ones. But adding them to AA4, they do not hold up very well story-wise.
@@julianthegamer6539 The crossover was my first AA game too ! Someone just gave it to me and my sister for some reason on chrismas, i knew what PL was but AA, not really. 🤷 Now AA is one of my favorite game franchise. ^^
This will sound like a drag but of the main series AJAA was my least favorite because while the story was godlike.... it just wasn't that funny. Like for me an AA game needs both a good story and funny characters and AJAA just wasn't that funny.
My case was kinda opposite, I was a AA fan and never heard of PL series until I saw the first trailer of the crossover. Luckily the game took a long so I had enough time to play all PL games ajajaja (until then)
It was still absolute genius to use a crossover to explain the uncanny art style as the AA team struggled to adapt their art style into 3D, and outright admitted as such in the developer notes. Putting the early AA models next to Layton characters instantly creates a feeling of No Man's Land that just helps sell the art style.
I mean, it's because of the cross over that I ever got into Ace Attorney, and now I love it just as much as professor Layton - i just hope the great ace attorney chronicles sell well enough to rejuvenate the series in the west--
I have only played the first of the two and I can tell you that I was not expecting anything, since the last ace attorney games already had me tired but I can tell you that it is one of the best ace attorney games and that for what they told me on the 2nd is even better so I hope it can revive the franchise in the west.
The fact the DD team were told they didnt have to follow up on any story threads from 4 explains a lot but is also infuriating if the series is supposed to be a continuous story
man i miss both these franchises like crazy. i remember the crossover being fun for what it was but was hoping for a more 50/50 experience but remember it being more of a layton game than an ace attorney one. so hyped up to finally play the dai gyakuten games in a few days!

Wait till you get to part 2 the feels oh the feels xD
Really? I remember it being more of an ace attorney game than a layton game because the focus was on the trials and the puzzles were few and far between (and really easy too).
The plot was definitely Laytonesque but there was about as much Ace Attorney content as there was Layton. Puzzles simply replaced the Investigation segments which make it feel more streamlined.
I remember being SUPER blown away by the advancement for the series this game provided. The 3D graphics looked great, awesome new mechanics and an AMAZING OST. Shu Takumi's involvement was definitely the deal sealer for the game. Only thing that's unfortunate is that he wasn't involved in the mainline AAs in DD and SoJ ..
@@patricetan No, he wasn't. He left AA for a bit after Apollo Justice and then came back just to work on the Great Ace Attorney because since it is set in 1900 he could create a new cast of characters without worrying about inserting Phoenix Wright like he was forced to do in Apollo Justice.
Nope! After Apollo Justice, Shu Takumi wanted to take a break, so a B team was made to create the spinoff games Ace Attorney Investigations and Investigations 2. However, after those games were released, Shu Takumi was still busy, so this B team was then moved onto the mainline games, to make Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice.
@realtimeentertainment7079 i really liked it. The chronological structure of things is weird, but yeah very fun title. I think part of the disdain might just come from Takumi not being the writer alone, and sure a major thread from AJ wasn't followed up on. But the knowledge that its a new writing team that was encouraged to not stress it actually makes that more excusable than just thinking the same guy forgot or didn't feel like following up on something he wrote lol. And as someone else said, SoJ was AMAZING, both definitely in my top 3 of the main line id say.
I really hope Nintendo still has the distribution rights for the Professor Layton games in Europe. Now that we're getting more Ace Attorney games for the Switch, we also need some remasters like they did for mobile.
I agree. The port of Katrielle's game was good, but the original six need to be brought over, especially since the older DS games are not as easy (or cheap) to come by.
I was the exact opposite! I played Ace Attorney in middle school and I had never even heard of Professor Layton until the crossover. I have a few Layton games and I’m LOVING the series so far!
The Layton games (but mostly all Level 5 games) always had an Italian localization, with voice actors and everything, and Layton Vs Wright was no exception. From AA1 to 4, these also had an italian localization, but after that italy was never to be seen again as an available language in Ace Attorney games. Layton Vs Wright would never had an italian localization if it weren't for Layton
The Italian copies for PLvsPW are also extremely hard to find nowadays. One of my friends has got one, and he says that he regularly sees them going on Ebay for like 100+€
I did feel that the Ace Attorney series were going in a state of change and hibernation between '07 to '12 with releases like Investigations 1 & 2, Ace Attorney 4, and the aformentioned Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright. I believe the change was good for the series because it made the games going foward more fresh, expressive and enjoyable, with your statement on the fans opinion of The Great Ace Attorney 1 & 2 showing high quality presentation, music and gameplay an example of the change that Shu Takumi and the capcom graphical teams experienced when developing PL vs PW with Level 5. While the other team made a fresh new way of presenting the mainline titles that I enjoy very much.
ok so the lesson here is everyone needs to go play ghost trick ironically I didn't play AA until after I played ghost trick and heard AA was made by the same guy lmaoooo pretty sure I'm in the minority with that
I did in fact forget this game existed. It’s currently downloading to my 3DS so thanks for the reminder. What a weird thing to have been made. That reveal trailer is kind of amazing.
@@yoshimario40 It's been great so far. I realize it wasn't exactly panned or anything at the time but I am surprised by the somewhat lukewarm reception it received. It's incredibly charming.
I feel like the time off since the 3DS era has really allowed the fandom to mature, grow, and foster appreciation for previously overlooked and sometimes disliked titles thanks to the rereleases of nearly all of them. I hope it lets them really do something creative when they eventually make their return whether Takumi is the one to bring the series back or they get another new team to inject their own blood into the franchise.
The change was probably for the better. These are great games but a bit of new blood and ideas helped keeping the series fresh. I love every single game this series has to offer.
@@andyenglish4303 It does play very well on Citra. I think porting Layton in general is difficult because Nintendo has or had publishing rights to it in some territories. It's kind of the reason Layton Brothers ended up on mobile instead of a proper Layton game some years back.
Having played DGS1 (haven't started 2 just yet) the influence from the Layton crossover shines through incredibly strong and it does so at every level. The crossover itself was a very fun experience that totally went beyond my expectations- I was expecting something way less big in scale, I suppose- but the effect its had on the series really can't be understated. I wasn't aware of the circumstances of GS5 and GS6s development, but in hindsight that only makes them more impressive to me. It's sad that we've yet to see any conclusion to the story threads dropped in GS4, a game I personally love, but GS5 and 6 both have so much fresh air to them I worry the franchise would've stagnated if Shuu Takumi would've been the sole writer and creator in charge, considering his "conservative" style. I know the originally trilogy was developed under extreme circumstances with very little time and limited hardware, and is very beloved, but personally I think that by the third entry, the characters and concepts were starting to grow old. I don't share the common idea that the trilogy is the flawless masterpiece everyone praises it to be, the games have flaws, just like all the other entries in the series, and there was a lot to be improved on; and in my opinion the "lower-pedigree" main line sequels have both refined and expanded on the formula in many ways. I'm sad the jury system didn't appear in the main line of games after Apollo and Phoenix fought so hard to get it implemented. That most of all feels like a plot hole. But other than that, I don't know, I feel like overall it was maybe for the best. Waiting impatiently for GS7, though.
This crossover was actually my first introduction into the Professor Layton series! I've never officially played any of the PL or AA games, since my parents could never really afford handheld consoles, but I loved watching playthroughs of the AA games on RUclips, because I thought the story was pretty neat. A few years after I had finished watching someone play Apollo Justice, I saw some MLP fanart of the crossover game and was like "there's an entire game I missed?!" Decided to check out the PL series before I saw the crossover and fell in love with it! Would've loved playing as a kid.
Same.. Playthrough AA watcher myself since UMVC3 introduced me to Ace Attorney and since I learned of the new PL game coming to Switch in 2025 Im getting into the Layton trilogy myself.
Looks like both Ace Attorney AND Level 5 have been struggling in recent years. The former declined in sales and popularity and the latter failed to follow up on the flash-in-the-pan success of Yokai Watch, with Ni no Kuni 2 reportedly underperforming and causing Level 5's North American branch to eventually close.
I don't know about the former. The hd trilogy sold pretty well and introduced alot of new fans to the series, and now not only Is the seventh entry in the main series being developed but the great ace attorney series Is finally getting localised. I don't know about you but I think we might be entering A renisaince era of Ace Attorney. The same however can't be said for Level-5, unfortunately...
@@savvassavvides6681 Uh...no, there is no evidence to AA7 being a thing. We know it was being considered at one point, but all evidence points to the project, and the 20th anniversary celebration as a whole, being effectively cancelled.
I feel like Ace Attorney could come back strong if the games released on steam. Even the most recent Switch release of ace attorney chronicles bothers me because I can't be bothered to download ANOTHER game on my switch id rather just buy it on steam or something. The only Ace Attorney game I bought was the Trilogy for that reason.
Yeah, Ghost Trick is an awesome title that deserves to be on more platforms. While it isn't quite a remaster, the iOS version does have higher resolution graphics from what I understand and Capcom recently updated the title to work on modern Apple devices.
Isn't it interesting how they all inspire each other? Ace Attorney was inspired by Famicom Detectives. Danganronpa was inspired by Ace Attorney. Not just that, many other franchises such as Professor Layton, Zero Escape, etc were made by developers who were big fans of Ace Attorney. I enjoyed going through The Great Ace Attorney 1&2, and I never thought I'd like such a prequel spinoff as much as I did. I hope there's an AA7 next. I never liked PL x AA, but your video definitely makes me appreciates it more, and this is certainly leagues above other Japanese crossovers like the so-called FE x SMT. I never realized Takumi made Ghost Trick, no wonder that game is so good.
And "Famicom Detective Club" itself was also inspired by "The Portopia Serial Murder Case" created by Yuji Horii (who also created the "Dragon Quest" series) for Enix on PC-6001 and Famicom, that game being sometimes considered as the first Japanese ancestor of Visual Novels. :) Indeed, "Ghost Trick" is fantastic.
Wow, this was really insightful and interesting. I never thought about the jury system in GAA being a direct continuation from Apollo Justice. Was really cool to hear about the development of this game and how it affected the course of the series, well done
Been playing The Great Ace Attorney ever since midnight on release, I was relatively uninformed on how the game worked (only knowing about the Dance of Deduction and general premise), I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the multi witness cross-examinations made a return. I did love playing the Crossover, after all. Also I know Ghost Trick isn't in focus here but I must take the opportunity to say, it's an amazing game that more people should play. I really hope there could be a remaster eventually, as a DS copy can be hard to track down and the mobile version is iOS only for whatever reason.
I'm forever appreciative for this game. I was just browsing the E-Shop since I had enough for a game and the puzzles caught my eye. I knew about both Layton and Phoenix but not really what the games were about. Even if it's a bit watered down, I didn't know that at the time and got hooked. Ended up buying the AA trilogy soon after and now it's my favorite game franchise. Glad to see DGS getting the localization it deserved finally.
I came to Ace Attorney through the Layton crossover, playing AA1-3 and AA5 with dropping AA4 after the first case after I enjoyed the crossover (I have yet to play AA6 but I will in 2 months when it releases on PC). Personally I don't like it when Adventure games consist of independent episodes being thrown together (like Layton's Mystery Journey did) so naturally I preferred PLvsPW:AA over the mainline Ace Attorney games. Atm I'm playing The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (7/10 chapters finished) which is why I came back to this video. I love how much this game feels like the crossover, I still find the investigation parts to be a bit lacking, but they certainly improved over the mainline games and reusing the mechanics first introduced by the crossover made me feel really nostalgic. The overarching story spanning over the entirety of the two games is obviously something I was hoping for and what I am most exited about. I hope the game finishes as grand as it is setting itself up for.
The PL VS AA trailer still gives me chills like the first time i saw it. The music was phenomenal too. Im playing Great Ace Attorney now, and i can really tell how much better the writing is compared to AA5 and AA6. Great insightful video
The ironic thing is that, by all accounts, this game is now going to be lost to time, as the development contract for it expired in 2019, and Level-5 is now going through bankruptcy (they've already shut down their Western branch). The game which lead to perhaps the most important Ace Attorney game (TGAA) since the Trilogy, all but inaccessible.
@@analysissel Well, yeah. The game is still up on the 3DS shop technically, but once it's gone, that's it. Capcom doesn't even officially acknowledge the game now.
Thank you for making this video! As for my personal experience, I actually played the first Dai Gyakuten Saiban game (fan translated, of course) directly after finishing the Professor Layton VS Ace Attorney game, so it was quite surprising how similar it felt to PLVSAA. The general feel of everything being covered in tea bags, and the use of multiple witnesses in a cross-examination were some of my favourite bits! Truly, Ace Attorney and Professor Layton are my favourite game franchises of all time, and I am so thankful that I can enjoy them.
I really love Professor Layton vs Phoenix Right, is fun, funny, creative, pretty, dark at times, and a very enjoyable with a great cast. I'm glad they made it.
I was originally a fan of the Layton trilogy on the DS. I found out about the Ace Attorney series by watching the original teaser of the crossover. I bought the original AA game and the rest was history. Finally, when the game was finally localized in the West, I was already a big fan of both series, and I loved every second of the crossover. So, all in all, it was thanks to that teaser if I became a big AA fan
What’s really interesting is deep diving into the little nuances as references to literally various points across the franchise, including Dual Destines and Spirit of Justice! How’s that for the Iceberg lore!!
PLvAA is one of my favorite games of all time, glad to see it talked about! I had never played an ace attorney game, but i was already a massive layton fan, so i remember the puzzles feeling fun but kind of easy, and fighting for my damn life in the courtroom segments... loved every second lol
Level 5 is doing good tho, they are having problems when getting the games out of japan (low sales to what it cost to localize them), but in japan they are doing it very good
I see many people who grew up with/are big fans of Layton getting to know Ace Attorney through this crossover, so just popping in as an example of the opposite way around! I got the game because it was an Ace Attorney game for me, as long as it had court cases and my favorite Ace Attorney Duo - I was hooked. I am a major Ace Attorney fan, I've played through the original trilogy a couple of times, enjoyed the hell out of Apollo's game and Dai Gyakuten Saiban, I still haven't gotten around to playing AA5 and AA6 though. I liked the crime solving aspect of the game, and while frustrating at times, I love the franchise to bits. What else is there to say? I played for Phoenix and Maya, stayed for Layton and Luke. During my first playthrough I took the game not as a crossover, but as an Ace Attorney game with a different polish. Playing through again, I realized that most of the elements I enjoyed, the storytelling, the puzzles? It was all Professor Layton, through and through. I had fun in the Witch's Court, true, but the nature of this game is leaning way more towards a Professor Layton game for me, and that is exactly how I got hooked on the franchise. I'm so upset I didn't find out about Professor Layton's games earlier, but hey! I finally have a reason to play them!
PLxPW was flawed (the court twists didn't live up to the usual highs) and the game ended with layton's trademark variants of 'it was all some kind of dream/illusion'. But man was it a wild fun ride. And the soundtrack is stunning.
This video makes me so hyped to play the great ace Attorney chronicles. I can't even express how happy this video made me. Both these game series were very important to me while growing up. Knowing they were always interconnected makes me so happy. Thank you. You've given me a gift today.
This was such an informative video! I’ve been a fan of AA since its DS games, and I remember being so excited about the crossover game, since I liked the Layton games as well. I was personally kind of let down by it, since it felt to me like a Layton game featuring Phoenix Wright, with some of the best parts of the AA series getting swallowed up by Level 5, and I wish in that sense the game felt more balanced. I didn’t know about the delays that happened as a result and it makes a lot of sense, since AA 5 felt very isolated from every other title. I agree though- Spirit of Justice is one of my favorite mainline titles despite being helmed by a different production team, and while I’m still nostalgic for the sprites and midis of yore, I’m glad the series is experiencing a comeback!
I wonder if this affected the Professor Layton series as well. We don't see much of Hershel Layton anymore as one game was on phone staring his son doing criminal investigations (Layton Brothers Mystery Room) while another was also on phone before ported to Nintendo consoles starring his daughter and doing more light-hearted mystery solving (Layton's Mystery Journey)
Honestly the QOL improvements in this game over the game before it, Azran Legacy, left me wanting more. Kinda sad that Lady Layton is basically it, but at least it wasn't Layton 7.
This video is amazing, it really shed some light in the hundreds of lose ends ive noticed in the series. Started playing in 2020 and i find it so strange that AA5 just basically ignores all concepts and basically all characters in AA4, and then why TGAA expanded on AA4 idea that was so many years before it (that btw i just love having multiple witnesses and the Juri system. I hope they cross it over to the main series as well). Also the Investigation Games existence was always kinda weird without knowing the context of their creation, really good video that makes everything clear!
I grew up as a PL fan, and got into AA much later in life at uni through friends recommending it, and THEN I found out there was a crossover and I was like ??!!!! This is the greatest day of my LIFE???!!!! It’s an outstanding game, I adore it. And now playing TGAA on switch, I can see the influences that the crossover had so clearly (such as witnesses reacting to other witnesses and getting more information from that).
I played Ace Attorney first on the switch and immediately fell in love, buying all the other games for my nintendo 3ds. I didn’t realise that the Great Ace Attorney was now on the switch, but I immediately got it after watching this video :3
This is a really well documented and edited video, the audio is also spot on. I'm not a content creator or video editor, the fact that a regular person can notice these intricacies, says a lot. Love your work. As a fan of the Ace Attorneys series, it gave me chills when you started to introduce the Great Ace Attorney chronicles.
I absolutely love professor Layton vs phoenix wright. Two of my favorite games mixed!! I played it together with my sister hunched over my little 3DS. Good times.
Excellent video! It's great to see that LvW is being recognized for what it's done for the series and this was a generally great watch and i could tell you put a lot of research into it!
With how massive LvW's development was and everyone putting their all into it despite its hiccups, it's a damn colossal shame that it didn't sell all that well. You'd think it would sell like hotcakes with how popular both IPs are and how amazing the novelty of them crossing over was! I do hope that Chronicles sells really well so that the work and passion that went into it can be recognized along with what it represents.
With TGAAC going on to sell 500,000 copies and professor layton getting a new game both franchises May experience a revival of sorts and I'm all for it
After all these years there's finally a video on this rather unknown game that I've loved, and I learned so much from this video. I'm a fan of both games, especially the music. I admittingly haven't played either of the franchises completely, but this game I remember in my teens being hooked by it. The music just gives me chills. The end credit music is just amazing music and such a great fan service; the way they combined both themes into one beautifully and epically. Listening to the soundtrack is a whole another experience. I think the live orchestrated approach of level 5's music has affected Ace Attorney afterwards as well, like Great Ace Attorney has amazing grand soundtrack like PL:PW. Thanks for the video! Fun Fact not mentioned in video: the voices for the ace attorney cast in PL:PW (in the original Japanese version) are the actors who portrayed them in the live action movie, so there was "celebrity" sell points as well, which raises bars for the voice acting. That is also Level 5's way of selling their games, for example voice for Layton is Yo Oizumi (my personal favorite actor) and Inazuma Eleven, the protagonist is voiced by Junko Takeuchi (Naruto).
I dont feel like dual destinies was any particularly different from the previous titles other than being technologically advanced. But yeah spirit of justice was quite a jump both in setting as well as how most of the trials played out with all the video watching you had to do
The Switch has seen sales explode on a lot of software, as well as older titles that have been rereleased on it. Hopefully Ace Attorney can ride that with some solid sales numbers to jump start the series and finally get another missed release, Investigations 2, an official release.
The Great ace attorney games were so good so glad we got them localized. 2 years later still waiting for AA7 news, hopefully once the new trilogy comes out and all 6 games are available on current consoles they will announce the 7th game Would also like them to do a investigation bundle like they did for great AA
Wow, so interesting! That explains a lot 👏🏼 I did notice that the 5th and 6th games had a different feel to the writing. The final case of 6 is one of my personal favourites though, they managed to tie everything together well in the end, so props to them for making their own way through it. I wonder how Apollo’s story may have differed if Shu Takumi was at the helm though? And what of the Divination Séances? Would this have never happened due to this sort of replacing the otherwise implemented jurist system teased at the end of AA4? 🤔 very interesting how development histories affect the trajectory of series. Here’s hoping for an AA7 once again helmed by Shu Takumi… 🙏🏼
I replayed the crossover a few months back and I loved it way more than I remembered. Honestly it might even overtake investigations 2 as my favourite ace attorney game, but its hard to decide
This video was very informative and I look forward to watching (or rewatching) more of your videos. Also the team A and B switch is so hilarious. Can’t believe the creator of Ace Attorney was put in a position were he was making spin offs to his own series. It’s just crazy!
This video managed to make me emotional quite a few times. This truly is a bittersweet story, I love the research and the thought put into this little documentary. This game is such an important turning point for both franchises and I'm glad this argument was well delivered.
I can also vouch for the fan translation, it's great. It's easy to patch it into a rom and doesn't leave text untranslated and sentences make sense, which is more than I can say about most translations I've played.
@@bloatatoeminis5976 I think the Fan Translation is actually the problem here... Who knows if the game would sell now that everybody who is interested has played that Translation already...
I grew up loving Professor Layton, I'd heard of Ace Attorney but knew nothing about it, the year before PLvsAA came out I decided to watch a playthrough of the first AA game just to get to know the characters so I wouldn't be confused when PlvsAA came out, and now I love both series so much. I remember waiting for the day the game was released, the day my school broke up for spring break, and playing it for hours a day, utterly obsessed - this game deserves so much more appreciation, I know a lot of people didn't like the ending (personally I'm indifferent to it) but the world that was created, the soundtrack, everything about it is why it's still one of my favourite games of all time
I know that I, personally, have thoroughly enjoyed every entry from all three series here... that I've played, at least. I own AA6, but haven't actually seen any of the cases yet. Investigations 1 was only just started a couple of days ago, but I can already tell it's as good as I was hoping. Investigations 2... that might be tricky to do, as no official English translation was produced. And the recent Western release of the Great Ace Attorney _will_ be mine by September, though the rush part is mostly due to the limited time free content that expires an August 31st.
This is a pretty informative video, I have no idea Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright affected the future development of the Ace Attorney series quite this deeply.
I’m surprised and happy to see so much people in my case: being a Layton fan and then being introduced to AA with this cross over (which I love much), AND loving it.
I really loved how the story and game included magic spells and fantasy elements with its own logic and rules into the evidence system and court gameplay. This crossover is one of the most influential games in my life and even though being a die-hard AA fan before, I got still surprised by the sheer amount of creativity and strong visuals that came beautifully together in this spin-off. I don't like that fans treat the latter installments like titles "that don't feel like real AA games" just because Shu Takumi wasn't entirely involved in the creation process anymore, since I personally feel that the mind-bending intriguing twists of the cases and love for detail run into the characters makes them true AA game to their core. Even the crossover did a wonderful job to make it feel like a legit AA mothership title, only that Layton game elements are also included, and for me the story and dialogues really do both main characters justice.
Great, great breakdown of this story. I would’ve loved to have heard more about the troubles within the development of Layton vs Wright. Nearly Nothing (if not nothing at all) from the original trailer made it in and we ended up with more of a Layton & Wright than Layton vs Wright. Would’ve loved to hear about the localization of the crossover too, as to why It took so long (compared to both franchises standards) to come to the west. Still great vídeo e great insights
This game introduce me and my sister to both series! We were on a road trip with a friend of ours and they let us play some the 3ds games they had. We had so much fun putting our brains together to in order to solves the puzzles. I loved the Ace Attorney segments, my sis loved Layton ones. We eventually got the game for ourselves and the rest was history. (BTW go play Ghost Trick if you haven't yet, try to go in it as blind as you can.)
Oh my gosh. This video has been recommended to me for a long time but I was hesitant to click on it. Now I have and this is like...INCREDIBLE OH MY GOD. Your editing and source usage makes this a full on documentary! How do you not have more subs??! Also your voice is soooo gentle. It’s so perfect for a video like this.
All things considered, it's amazing how strong the series managed to stay despite the wild domino effect. The crossover itself is awesome, Ghost Trick is a great unique time that I'm looking forward to playing the remaster, Investigations are pretty great spin offs, AA5&6 are fun directions for the franchise and I love Athena, and I'm having a ball playing through Great Ace Attorney Chronicles as I type this comment lol. This whole crazy... Turnabout scenario could've easily killed many a game franchise of Ace Attorney's scale at the time it happened but like in the actual cases, the series pulled through this rough patch and found victory. Given how quickly Ghost Trick remaster is coming out after GAA chronicles, I have full faith we'll be seeing ports of 4-6 and maybe even the Layton crossover after Level 5 just flexing on us in that Nintendo direct lol. Also looking forward to 7, long awaited indeed.
This explanation was amazingly detailed! It's interesting how the PL and PW crossover had such a big effect on the ace attorney series in general. I'm also very happy to have been able to play TGAA in the officially localised version, this game so far is most definitely one of my favourite Ace Attorney titles too, so I really do hope to see the rumoured Ace Attorney 7 as you've talked about in the video, to actually be developed! This video was great from the start to the end, thanks for shedding some light on this!
I just finished both GAA games, and honestly... I loved them, especially Resolve. I couldn't imagine the sequels would revolutionise the main game series in a whole new way. AAT&T, being my favorite game that introduced me to the AA game series, pales in comparison to GAA games even though less comical in my opinion. It shows the positive influence of the crossover development that introduced new possibilities while preserving the very soul of the AA series.
You know what I like about AA6? The fact that we got at least something from AA4 in it. Spoiler: That's the fact we reference Lamiroir in the And of AA6. Namely when Phoenix gives her a picture of Jove Justice, Apollo's dad. Plus the reference of Trucy and Apollo being siblings was made. My opinion: Tho, like many, I would have loved to have seen a proper continuation to AA4. But circumstances stopped that.
WAIT???!!!!! We're getting Ace Attorney 7?!! OMG, I want to cryyyy 😭😭😭 After I finished The Great Ace Attorney last month, I cried a lot during the end credits, thinking it might be the last Ace Attorney game I'd ever play, so your words give me a lot of hope! Wonderful video BTW, I learned so many things! As someone who also works in the video game industry, I can confirm how hard it is to work with different companies who have their own ideas on how to do things, there can be lots of delays and changes before everyone is satisfied, and it's both frustrating and exhausting... I remember being very unimpressed with how this crossover ended, but the world it was set in was fantastic! So much so that The Great Ace Attorney felt like a sequel of sorts. I do hope that the next game will be a proper end to the storyline developed in AA4... While I'm not a fan of Apollo&co., I do think their story deserves a proper ending. Hopefully with Phoenix as the main character, though.
Been obsessed with both series for a long time, and I was THRILLED when I heard about the crossover. Even with the issues, it's one of my favorite games in both franchises. I can't wait to play Great Ace Attorney.

I mean it's canon in that game, but no other game in both series
I agree. My only issue is that the climax doesn't really make any sense, but everything before that was golden. I really like it.
I liked it and the great ace attorney learned from it and used the cool features, most importantly multiple witnesses on the stand

Last Specter and a tie between the first game and Investigations 2
DGS or The Great Ace Attorney: Chronicle’s is its spiritual successor
There's a reason the original trilogy of Ace Attorney is among one of the best trilogy of all video games ever on almost any top 10
just watch them make resident evil vs yokai watch
Yup, I'd say the trilogy + The Great Ace Attorney series are probably the best games in the series.
I also like how Phoenix is the Goku to Layton's Superman in the crossover.
it's really funny bc growing up i was a PL fan, and i hadn't really heard of AA until i heard about the crossover. so my first ever AA game WAS the crossover, and ever since then i've been hooked on the series.
Luckily the game took a long so I had enough time to play all PL games ajajaja (until then)
It was the opposite for me
It was still absolute genius to use a crossover to explain the uncanny art style as the AA team struggled to adapt their art style into 3D, and outright admitted as such in the developer notes. Putting the early AA models next to Layton characters instantly creates a feeling of No Man's Land that just helps sell the art style.
I'm inclined to think it also provided a relatively safe testing ground to ensure the models in the main series could be better. ❤

Level 5 was the developer rather than Capcom, so that feeling makes sense.
@ it had a part 2
I remember being SUPER blown away by the advancement for the series this game provided. The 3D graphics looked great, awesome new mechanics and an AMAZING OST.
Shu Takumi's involvement was definitely the deal sealer for the game. Only thing that's unfortunate is that he wasn't involved in the mainline AAs in DD and SoJ ..
he wasn’t? no wonder DD had somewhat of a weak plot. SoJ was amazing tho imo
@@thephoenixxm4160 How about Miles Edgeworh Investigation?
Did Shu Takumi was in charge of the game?

E che cavoli...
The Italian copies for PLvsPW are also extremely hard to find nowadays. One of my friends has got one, and he says that he regularly sees them going on Ebay for like 100+€
Same thing happened with spanish :/

Indeed, "Ghost Trick" is fantastic.

@@lishark843 that doesn't sounds like their fine.
One of the best video essays I’ve seen on RUclips in a while! Great job!
Great video! I never even knew how PLvsPW had affected the series. Also, like another user mentioned, a video about Ghost Trick perhaps? :)
Cyropynical what are you doing here, you should be making Cetspop 2
Very well done video!
I never knew how much impact PLvPW had on the Ace Attorney franchise, beyond how some of its concept were re-used in DGS/TGAA
Good times.
I gotta say, each time I replay this game I find myself appreciating it a bit more.
Lentils with some new J-Adventure content and I'm here for it all day.
With TGAAC going on to sell 500,000 copies and professor layton getting a new game both franchises May experience a revival of sorts and I'm all for it
Takumi: we don't add what we don't need
Penny: am i a joke for you
that's because they needed Penny...
But yeah spirit of justice was quite a jump both in setting as well as how most of the trials played out with all the video watching you had to do
They kind of already did that with rise of the ashes.
2 years later still waiting for AA7 news, hopefully once the new trilogy comes out and all 6 games are available on current consoles they will announce the 7th game
Would also like them to do a investigation bundle like they did for great AA
This game is such an important turning point for both franchises and I'm glad this argument was well delivered.
man, i loved that game. kills me that it wasnt better received. now if only we could get a Layton VS Puzzle Agent cross-over. then i could die happy.
HOLD IT!
Studio Bones animated the cutscenes?! Well… that actually explains a lot now.
I hope we'll get Investigation 2 localized one day. And Takumi return for Ace Attorney 7.
The fan translation is pretty good
I can also vouch for the fan translation, it's great. It's easy to patch it into a rom and doesn't leave text untranslated and sentences make sense, which is more than I can say about most translations I've played.
@@leonro I never really mess with emulators. I've tried to before but I can't get them working and I'm pretty sure I downloaded a virus once.
@@bloatatoeminis5976 I think the Fan Translation is actually the problem here... Who knows if the game would sell now that everybody who is interested has played that Translation already...
@@m.m.2341 I doubt that's a thing. Or people wouldn't buy Great Ace attorney
what a great vid, professor layton vs phoenix wright is a childhood favorite of mine
THANK YOU SO MUCH, THE WORLD DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH VIDEOS LIKE THESE
I grew up loving Professor Layton, I'd heard of Ace Attorney but knew nothing about it, the year before PLvsAA came out I decided to watch a playthrough of the first AA game just to get to know the characters so I wouldn't be confused when PlvsAA came out, and now I love both series so much.
Its really cool that capcom incorporated mechanics from the crossover they made to an entirely new ace attorney series (great ace attorney)
Really nice information about the behind-the-scenes stuff I wasn't aware of. As a fan of the AA games, this was a really cool video, well done Bowl!
I'm about to name the incident where Shu Takumi stopped directing the main series because of the crossover:
The PL-5 incident.
Very well made video, thank you!!
Spoiler:
That's the fact we reference Lamiroir in the And of AA6. Namely when Phoenix gives her a picture of Jove Justice, Apollo's dad. Plus the reference of Trucy and Apollo being siblings was made.
My opinion:
Tho, like many, I would have loved to have seen a proper continuation to AA4. But circumstances stopped that.
AA5 also had that similar conversation at the end too.
awesome video - thanks for sharing the behind the scenes.
WAIT???!!!!! We're getting Ace Attorney 7?!! OMG, I want to cryyyy 😭😭😭
After I finished The Great Ace Attorney last month, I cried a lot during the end credits, thinking it might be the last Ace Attorney game I'd ever play, so your words give me a lot of hope!
0:30 thought that was a Smash letter at first XD
Documentry quality! Thanks for your works.
Been obsessed with both series for a long time, and I was THRILLED when I heard about the crossover. Even with the issues, it's one of my favorite games in both franchises. I can't wait to play Great Ace Attorney.
This was my first Professor Layton and Ace Attorney game
